G109: Angels 9, Red Sox 2

Angels - 000 305 001 - 9 16 0
Red Sox - 000 020 000 - 2 8 4
A horrific sixth inning -- walk, home run, single, groundout, double, error, single, stolen base, error, sac fly, error, double, groundout -- put this one out of reach. Low point of the season so far.

Tampa Bay edged Toronto 3-2, so the Red Sox fell to 3 GB. The Yankees whipped Baltimore 13-3 to stay 4 GB.

And the trade rumours continue to swirl around Manny Ramirez.

***

Joe Saunders (3.10, 135 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.83, 115 ERA+)

The Red Sox try to avoid being swept by the Angels for the second three-game series in 13 days.

But first: Rays/Blue Jays at 12:30 PM and Orioles/Yankees at 1 PM

Either way, hope it went well!

There are all sorts of fantastic toilet papers out there. There are thick ones that really get in there and clean, and they don't rip. Flushing hand-towels??? I don't know what's more absurd - actually wiping with them, or flushing them down.

I wouldn't have been surprised if Manny didn't wipe at all. I'm sure there are a lot of baseball players who could be like that. You just don't want to see them get into any extended hitting streaks.

nixon33 said...

last nights whole "niether kotchman, nor tex play" worked out really well for us, huh?

manny has no heart, and he sits out a lot vs tough pitchers, the bastard! wait... anyone wanna take a guess who's played the most games this year as a red sock?

Jack Marshall said...

I love how the media is annointing the Angels as the best team in baseball. The stats, at least the last time I looked, say the Red Sox are far superior in hitting and pretty much even in pitching. (Admittedly, it would be nice if they could demonstrate that superiority occasionally.) Maybe they are just hitting their stride---I tend to believe that, like the Yankees recently, they are in a period where everything is working, and the superiority is illusory. The Sox are better, but its about damn time they showed it.

tim said...

I scoff at Charmin's latest marketing campaign, trying to position themselves as the brand that doesn't rip.

That has got to be, by far, the absolute SHITTIEST (no pun intended) toilet paper I've ever used. It just comes apart and you're left with flakes of it sticking to your....I sense I've gone too far with this. Anyway, fuck it.

That poop story is ridiculous. With regards to the comment on that blog:

"You can't flush hand towels, to say nothing of multiples. Anyone who has studied sewage management knows that! Geez."

Fuck, I haven't studied anything and I know it's bad to flush paper towels, let alone HAND TOWELS!

We should email dorsillo and jremy @nesn.com that story, so they can giggle about it for 3 innings later tonight. Just as the acid is kicking in.

L-girl said...

The Sox are better, but its about damn time they showed it.

Jack, I'm curious what you mean by that. Do you mean the Sox are better on paper, that they "should" be better, but are playing below expectations?

I'm not saying the Angels are the best team in baseball, I don't pay enough attention to other teams to be qualified to answer that.

But it seems to me that if the Angels keep beating the Red Sox, consistently, in several different fashions - out-pitching, out-hitting and out-scoring them - then right now the Angels are the better team.

No?

[Note to A: 2004 and 2007 playoffs do not count!]

tim said...

The Angels are playing 8 games above their Pythagorean (expected W-L). This is part of the reason Frod is dominating the league in saves (many close games) and they're bound to regress to the mean at some point. Tex will give them some extra pop though, but hopefully their pitching will falter down the stretch.

nixon33 said...

would you guys want pat burrell and pitching prospects for MBM?

Jack Marshall said...

Laura, I base this on 1) the fact that the Red Sox run differential is much better, even after this down period. 2) the fact that the Angels play in the AL West, by far the weakest division, allowing them to inflate their W-L record.

The Red Sox have played better than their record indicates. They have lost a lot of odd, fluky games that could have easily gone the other way. The Sox are better on paper, yes---though the trade yesterday evens things up a lot. When the dust clears, absent injuries or a stupid Manny trade, I think Boston will probably have the better record, and the Angels will not continue their dominance in the play-offs.

redsock said...

Yep.

BOS: .278/.354/.441, 109 OPS+
LAA: .261/.322/.399, 93 OPS+

BOS: 4.96 RS/G (3rd AL)
LAA: 4.53 RS/G (9th AL)

BOS: 4.14 RA/G
LAA; 4.12 RA/G

BOS: 3.84 ERA (5th AL), 114 ERA+
LAA: 3.88 ERA (6th AL), 108 ERA+

RS/RA (EXP W-L)
BOS: 536/447, 63-45
LAA: 480/437, 58-48

BOS has allowed 10 more runs, but has scored 56 more.

ACTUAL RECORDS
LAA: 66-40, .623
BOS: 61-47, .565

BOS is underperforming its Pythag by 2 games, while LAA is overperforming by 8 games (best differential in MLB, btw).

I wouldn't exactly call losing 7 in a row 'playoff dominance'

ESPN says:
The deadline to trade Manny Ramirez is essentially today at 4 p.m. ET. As a 10-5 guy (10 years in the majors, five with the same team), Ramirez has the right to veto any deal. If he waives a trade to a team, he must sign paperwork 24 hours prior to the deal. So at the least, Ramirez will have to officially waive his no-trade rights to teams he would be willing to go to by 4 p.m. ET today. It is possible that Ramirez has already signed away his no-trade rights to certain teams, but it is unknown if he has done so.

Tim, I think Jack means the Angels will not continue the dominance that they are currently displaying in the 2008 playoffs.

Jack, correct me if I am wrong. And thanks for the explanation. To use a terrible old cliche, too bad the game isn't played on paper.

I'm not in the business of making predictions, so I wouldn't argue one way or the other. I just watch the games, and as I watch them, the Angels appear to be the better team. There's only so much you can chalk up to fluke or chance.

redsock said...

Buster Olney:
By the way: Manny Ramirez's time running to first base on a chopper hit down the third-base line in the seventh inning of John Lackey's no-hitter was 5.25 seconds -- faster than the six seconds it took him to get to first on the back end of a double-play groundout Monday. To put those times in perspective, five seconds is considered glacial by baseball scouts. With his team eight outs away from being no-hit, the guy dogged it running to first.

************

Why doesn't Olney get his stop watch out to time to the slow pace of Ortiz going to first? Aren't we all pretty sure Papi has been lying about his bad knees?

I know I'm getting like Jere and the camera angle (!), but most of the Red Sox hitters jog down to first on routine grounders -- this particular one by Manny was not routine, but the media has pissed and moaned on myriad two-hoppers to second base also -- yet only Manny gets slammed for it.

I might give the media a break if they EVER called out Ortiz, Varitek, Lowell, etc. -- even once.

tim said...

Tim, I think Jack means the Angels will not continue the dominance that they are currently displaying in the 2008 playoffs.

Ahh, I got it.

You say tomato, I say tomato. That expression doesn't really work out well on the internets I guess.

I understand about Pythag and regression to the mean.

But I also understand it's almost August. How long can a team underperform or overperform before people will admit that these are the teams that they are?

The Rays and the Angels are both as good or better than the Red Sox this season.

How long can Sox fans deny that before they start sounding like Yankees fans?

L-girl said...

L-girl, was that a job interview you were doing last night? Or like a media interview with regards to the campaign?

Oh Tim, just saw your question.

I do a lot of interviews for stories I write. Right now I'm working on a huge project that involves talking to tons of people. A lot of them live on the west coast so they are usually available at night my time. During games - boooo!

Thanks for your good wishes. :)

redsock said...

How long can Sox fans deny that before they start sounding like Yankees fans?

About two more weeks.

Jack Marshall said...

Laura, obviously, the results so far are in your favor: I can't dispute the analysis, other than to say that I don't think the real Red Sox have surfaced commpletely yet, and the Rays and Angels have played about as well as they can possibly play. The real Sox are a team where the Ortiz, Manny, Drew, Lowell gives them the meanest middle of the line-up in the league and the Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, Wake top four give them a match-up advantage against almost everybody, including the Rays. There's plenty of time still.

Ellsbury has to turn it around, Francona has to find a bullpen formula (and cut bait on Hansen) and the team can't afford any more major injuries. I would still say they are best bet to be on top when the dust clears.

We'll see!

tim said...

Sounds good, L - sucky about it being during game times but hey, like you said, at least you didn't miss much yesterday.

This has been a brutal day thus far. My first final is on Saturday and I've got zero motivation to study for it yet. Thus the large amount of comments on here.

Yes, the Rays and Angels are better than the Sox this season so far, as evidenced by their records. I'm saying the Angels hopefully will start losing some of the close games they've been winning to regress to the mean. Of course it is possible for them to finish the season way ahead of the Pythag, but hopefully their pitching will go south. And those losses can start tonight!

We need a gem from Beckett. 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R would be beautiful. Also gotta hit the Colonel early and often to get a big lead in this game.

Wow, I sound like FOX's keys to winning the game.

"Red Sox: Beckett must not allow runs and the offense must score lots of runs"

"Angels: Continue winning streak against Red Sox by scoring more runs than them"

Last night during the M's/Rangers game, Kenji Johjima was hit by a pitch and had to leave for a pinch-runner. I'm not sure why, but the pinch-runner was Jarrod Washburn. He went to the top step of the dugout and his manager said hey! Were's your belt? He looks down and can't find it, he'd have to go back to the clubhouse to get it. Manager says here, take mine.

Washburn went to first and scored a couple of plays later.

redsock said...

Not so. The Angels are actually playing their worst ball against teams in their own divsion.

5-4 v Texas
6-3 v Seattle
8-5 v Oakland

19-12 v West (.613)
19-10 v East (.655)
18-10 v Central (.643)

(They have made hay against us (7-1) and TOR (6-3).)

Why are you touring the Toyota plant?

s1c said...

According to Remy on WEEI, "I was walking through the clubhouse and asked manny if he really wanted to be traded. Yess, I want to find peace".

As for the Angels vs the Sox debate, when one team has won seven games straight against you, well you have to admit that they have your number. Right now the Angels have the Sox number.

Heres hoping that they do a similar number against the MFY's. Especially since they have 9 games vs the MFY's to play this year.

L-girl said...

I don't think the real Red Sox have surfaced commpletely yet

That would be great. I hope you're right, I fear you are wrong.

tim said...

Why are you touring the Toyota plant?

Steph's doing her co-op work term there. I did a tour back in June for a project, today her parents are coming up for a tour so I figured I'd tag along.

They've closed the Lexus part of the plant though, so it will be a short one.

L-girl said...

Oh, cool.

I remember when that plant opened, I read how Toyota had been deciding between Ontario and Florida. Ontario won for two reasons. 1, lower costs for employee benefits, since they all have provincial health insurance. And 2, extremely high illiteracy rate in Florida.

I love how they actually felt they had to compare Ontario and Florida.

L-girl said...

Tim, I can't swear it was the Cambridge plant, but it was definitely Toyota, and somewhere in this area (GTA, K-W, etc.). I blogged about it at the time if you wanted to bother searching wmtc for the link.

Probably the Woodstock plant opening in a couple months.

The Cambridge one (going on a tour of today) opened in 1986.

L-girl said...

Probably the Woodstock plant opening in a couple months.

Not unless it takes more than 3 years to open a plant. (Does it?)

When I blogged about it I was still living in NYC.

tim said...

Yeah, it does take awhile. I remember hearing about it in classes during my first year of university...which would have been 2005.

Yeah, 2005 - when the Sox were swept by the Sox in the ALDS. 2006 was shit then they won in 2007. Definitely 2005.

So yeah, it must've been in its infancy about 3 years ago.

Here is how someone at SoSH put it:

Remy on EEI: "He was happy, fun, I don't know what happened but it's a totally different guy... I saw him yesterday, he asked me if he was traded, I said you got two more days and you don't want to really go.... he said Yes I do, I want to find peace."

Look what it's come to -- we're getting late breaking baseball news from Remy! Oy.

No idea if that is a direct quote or in what tone it was said. I could totally hear Manny joking with Remy and saying "Yeah, I need some peace and quiet" as a joke.

But there it is.

P.S. If Manny really wants to go to a city, play ball and be left alone, that's not going to happen. Boston is not unique that way.

How would everyone feel if the Red Sox did little to nothing at the trade deadline?

I'd like them to pick up a reliever, but I don't expect anything else. What's out there that makes sense? Ace starting pitching? Slugging shortstop? Maybe you know something I don't, but I don't think there's anything to be pissed about if nothing happens.

Ohman's potentially a bit more than a LOOGY. And I think might be under our control for a while (but I'm not sure).

I don't think the Sox have to do a thing.

Trading a player like Lowrie is insane. The trade the Yankees just made is a panic move, if you ask me. Pudge is certainly an offensive upgrade over Molina (though Pudge never walks and doesn't have much poer any more), but they open up that 8th inning problem again---for the first time with NY, Farnsworth was pitching well. The only place where a trade could upgrade the Sox is the bullpen, naturally, but looking over the history of such moves, its about 50-50 or worse to backfire. The best late acquisition to the pen I can remember was Calvin Schiraldi, out of Triple A. (And we know how THAT turned out.) Willoughby saved their ass in '75--he was a thrwoaway trade involving a minor prospect. Bigger names...Anderson, Gagne, Williamson, Stanton (the second time), Saurbeck...all pretty much were net losses.

Much as I'm sick of Craig Hansen, he's probably as good a gamble to pitch well from here on as anyone the Sox pick up at an inflated price. Did you see how Marte did yesterday?

Sure---if they could get someone like Sherrill without giving away the farm, I'd like it. But its hardly a requirement. I don't know why everyone is so pessimistic today. The Sox need a streak. It's coming.

Making a deal just to make a deal doesn't make sense.

I don't know if Manny is an idiot or not (I have my own view but don't want to get into THAT discussion again), but if Olney is right, the Red Sox brass clearly THINK he's an idiot. The last two months will go a long way towards determining how much he makes, where he plays, and his legacy with the team, and they really don't know "how invested Ramirez will be"? Now, I happen to think OLNEY is an idiot, but really: if this is true, the Sox are making an idiotic judgement, or Manny really is brain-damaged.

MLB's Joe Frisaro: 7:24: Latest rumor is a three-way with Pittsburgh that would send Jason Bay to Boston.

redsock said...

Jason Bay = Canadian.

ish said...

So, it would be Manny to Florida, Hermida to Pittsburgh, and Bay to Boston.

Looks like I'll probably get lunch on Farnsworth St tomorrow in memory of The Mop.

phil said...

Not the hand, Josh. Not the hand.

ish said...

I think Farnsworth cried because he was being sent to the same team Sheffield is on.

Hope I didn't miss this in the comments, but SG at RLYW put up a good post as to why the Pudge deal was a steal for the Yankees:

http://www.replacementlevel.com/index.php/RLYW/direct/what_is_two_months_of_pudge_rodriguez_worth

I'm with redsock in that Theo doesn't have to make a deal for the sake of making a deal, but I do think this team has holes that could be filled, and if they're not filled, it makes heading to the postseason (and winning in it) that much harder.

Tony said...

Shit, the link didn't show up right. Oh well, everybody knows where RLYW is, go take a look.

Patrick said...

Where's Andy? He would like to fill some of the holes...

Thanks, there's a mental image I really, really wanted.

Beckett's pitching like ALDS Game 1 right now. If the Sox are going to get that win, it damn well better be tonight. And wow, that 3rd strike on Figgins was kinda iffy.

redsock said...

i hope dice is watching

attack attack attack!

...

fuck you chone.

redsock said...

strike 2 looked more iffy to me.

either way, chone (rhytmes with bone) can eat a bowl of dicks

More Manny comments...

"They haven't asked me for anything. The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me. During my years here I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.

"The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy. I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price and I don't have peace here.

"Boston hasn't said anything, they haven't asked me to sign any papers or anything like that. There are still many hours left before the trading deadline, but I doubt that they will trade me."

nixon33 said...

redsock in rare form tonight!

Tony said...

God, it's so sad watching Tek right now. That pitch could've been over his head and he probably would've swung at it.

Jack Marshall said...

Gammons just got testy with Phillips on BBBT, when the latter suggested that Francona could keep Manny happy the rest of the season. Gammons says 1) the Sox are convinced that he's going to punt the rest of the way 2) Manny doesn't think doing so will hurt his chances of getting 20-25 mil a year and 3) the deal with the Marlins is more likely to happen than not.

Well, if the team really thinks there's a substantial chance that he'll quit the last two months, then he needs to be traded. Right?

redsock said...

shit - who is feeding manny those lines?

fuck.

rare form? yay wine!

Will somebody on this team get a hit, for the love of sweet merciful Jesus?

THANK YOU PEDEY! Christ Almighty.

How about that for mental imagery, Tony?

Sarah Gates said...

I want a snack, but now that I've entered the room, I'm afraid to leave it. Allan might trade me for bats. At least they wouldn't be fruit bats...

redsock said...

HATE THE DRAKE.

phil said...

Just a bit outside.

Tony said...

Okay, then. We've now established that balls a foot off the plate will be called strikes. Take note, Beckett.

Tony said...

How about that for mental imagery, Tony?

Hey, he's the main man around here. He can say whatever filthy shit he wants. :D

It's true.

redsock said...

Zenslinger said...

Yay wine!

I'm juice fasting, so my brain is similarly addled, although not by the usual method you're taking.

Sarah Gates said...

shit - who is feeding manny those lines?

Well, who stands to gain from the club options not being utilized? Not his OLD agents, that;s for sure...

Tony said...

Just because I'm curious for other reactions - if Manny does get moved to Florida, do you think that gives them an edge in the NL East? I can't really think it would, since they're probably giving up some prime talent for Manny, but it's not like the Phils and Mets are setting the world afire, so...

ish said...

Chips chips? Or french fry chips?

Sarah Gates said...

I would like someone to deliver some chips to me. I have no car.

Perhaps instead of bats or catfish, you could trade me for chips? I'm so not bringing them up there though...

Tony said...

Ah, Jesus. Right in front of Tex, too.

redsock said...

Patrick said...

Marlins would get the best end of the deal. Both Manny Ramirez and Hanley Ramirez in the same lineup is rather potent. Hermida's batting .254/15/47 which is less than Bay's .284/22/62.

Only question for the Marlins is who replaces Hermida at season's end?

redsock said...

5 of 6 K called.

Patrick said...

Welcome to the AL, Douche! I mean welcome back...

Tony said...

Sit down, Tex. That was a textbook bit of pitching from our ace.
