G89: Red Sox 6, Yankees 4

Red Sox - 003 030 000 - 6 12 0
Yankees - 300 000 001 - 4 6 1
Mike Lowell's three-run home run in the fifth broke a 3-3 tie and carried the Red Sox through a 88-minute rain delay and a win in the second game of the MFY series. The first trio of Boston runs scored in the third on Lowell's sac fly and Kevin Youkilis's triple.

You must see highlights of Yook's triple (here). It was hit to deep left and Johnny Damon raced back. He leapt at the wall, had the ball hit in and then pop out of his glove. As Damon fell to the warning track, the ball bounced a couple of times on the top of the outfield fence, and stayed balanced on top before falling and rolling several feet away from Damon. Game pictures here (and here), including this one:

The bullpen snuffed out two rallies. In the seventh, Hideki Ojakima left the bases loaded with two outs for Manny Delcarmen, who got Alex Rodriguez to hit into a force play. Then, in the eighth, after MDC walked Jason Giambi and retired Jorge Posada on a fly out, Javier Lopez came in and ended the inning with one pitch -- a double play grounder from (Whatta ya know!) Robbie Cano.

Beckett (6-4-3-2-4, 102) had a rough first inning -- two doubles and a walk among the first four batters -- but settled down, retiring the side in the second and third on 20 total pitches. A fantastic running-and-sliding catch into foul territory from Jacoby Ellsbury saved Beckett's bacon in the fourth, when he left the bases loaded.

In the two games of the series, New York is 2-for-24 with runners on base. It should be 1-for-23, but Derek Jeter was credited with a double although his fly ball to left-center was clearly caught by Coco Crisp. That should have ended the game, but it brought Bobby Abreu to the plate as the potential tying run.

Abreu flew to deep center (truping however many Yankee fans remained) to end the game (again). Give Jonathan Papelbon an asterik for a one-inning, five-out save. He had struck out Brett Gardner -- the batter before Jeter -- for what should have been the third out, but Gardner was awarded a walk instead.

***

Rain delay (tarp out at 4:20) in the top of the 8th!
Lugo on first and none out against Farnsworth.

***

Josh Beckett (3.65, 117 ERA+) / Darrell Rasner (4.42, 91 ERA+)

Dear Red Sox:

Today is George Steinbrenner's 78th birthday. Ruin it.

Thanking you in advance ...

Guaranteed, those Yankee sucking-hacks, Dibble and Kennedy, will still be saying on Monday, "The Yankees will be fine. They're within striking distance." At least Girardi can recognize a team on the skids when he sees one.

allan said...

Oscar is back ... and he's back grouchy.

BR's Stat of the Day:

"Last night John Lester threw a gem against the Yankees. His 5 hit shutout was all the more significant given his age, the opponent, and the location of the game. Since 1956 there have been 73 games started by young (24 or younger) Red Sox pitchers against the Yankees in NY. Lester's game score of 83 ranks second only to a 3 hitter thrown by Dave Morehead in 1965."

(Billy Rohr's one-hitter is #3.)

allan said...

Pedroia is the 3rd player this year to miss the cycle by not getting a single.

Benjamin said...

Getting a second double should count as getting a single for cycle purposes, though. He could've stopped at first if he'd wanted to.

allan said...

I just realized that BR misspelled Jon's first name. Lame.

Joe Grav said...

SWEET! The Navs game @ Holyoke got rained out. Now I can enjoy the 4th and watch the Sox game.

laura k said...

Dilemma. Sit outside w/ the game on the computer, and watch YES? Or go inside on this beautiful summer day and maybe get NESN?

I'll try it outside and see how bad it gets.

Joe Grav said...

Let's go ManRam

Joe Grav said...

"bases filled with Red Sox" - DO

laura k said...

What will the Dr prescribe?

allan said...

Okay, Yook, get it done.

laura k said...

Eh, just a mild case of popupitis.

laura k said...

Kay & Singleton blathering on about the Yankees team meeting before the game. I'm sure that will do it!

Even Don & Remy were making fun of that mindset yesterday.

Joe Grav said...

Ah2434!@#!

allan said...

Has Michael Kay mentioned how Manny murdered that Red Sox official and had sex with the corpse?

laura k said...

crap!

allan said...

I think that was the 4th team meeting Girardi has called this season.

I'm sure THIS one will give all the players more talent. That's what meetings do, right?

Joe Grav said...

Has Michael Kay mentioned how Manny murdered that Red Sox official and had sex with the corpse?

I was trying to forget that that happened.

OK Beckett, let's s ee what ya got today.

Joe Grav said...

ah shit.

Joe Grav said...

That was one ugly changeup

allan said...

damn josh, just put it on a tee.

allan said...

bunt - great idea!!!!

Joe Grav said...

But Jeter is so clutch!!!!

laura k said...

I doubt Kay cares much about Manny with JD Drew around. I never heard an ancr hate a player the way Kay used to talk about Drew.

allan said...

OMG -- look at tek's ugly chest protector.

god, if dumbo was wearing that, we'd rip him to shreds.

laura k said...

Tek decked out in stars & stripes.

allan said...

ugg - the B on their caps is red white and blue with stars too.

allan said...

what will the mfy do for the 7th inning stretch on 7/4 at the stade fasciste?

restage some great military battle?

laura k said...

yup. full u-s-a regalia. but today's a good day - no more jesse helms!

allan said...

time for a blue-lipped dp

laura k said...

kay is extra gross today b/c alex is one HR away from mickey mantle. so of course the whole world must stop and genuflect.

Joe Grav said...

fucking a-rod.

Joe Grav said...

OMG -- look at tek's ugly chest protector.

It is ugly, but at least he's auctioning it off for charity after the game.

He still sucks at hitting, but he is a very charitable guy.

Joe Grav said...

Jesse Helms died?I almost forgot he existed

laura k said...

yeah yeah, they're all charitable. that thing is still gross!

Joe Grav said...

gun him..........

ah f uck, 3-0

Joe Grav said...

It's pretty gawdy. I think the pink one on mother's day might have been worse. I don't remember what the father's day one looked like, anyone remember?

laura k said...

yup, finally kicked it at age 86

Joe Grav said...

For some reason, I thought he already died.

Sarah Haendler said...

yeah, they were doing that A-rod/Mantle nonsense yesterday too. Not really looking forward to seeing more of those caps around town either - knee jerk patriotism and the yankess, two of my favorite things!

laura k said...

probably because he's been a walking corpse for so long.

Joe Grav said...

Helms once said his job was to derail the freight train of liberalism.

Fail!

Sarah Haendler said...

I don't remember there being a special one on Father's Day, but there was that horrid camo one on Memorial Day.

Joe Grav said...

The caps look okay to me. The chest protector is ugly.

allan said...

Manny will soon be closing in on Mantle also.

laura k said...

I thought his job was to hate everyone who was different from him.

Joe Grav said...

I'm pretty sure the length of the 7th inning stretch depends on the game situation. If the Sox are in the lead and Beckett is coming back out to pitch the 8th, it will last 35 minutes

Joe Grav said...

7th**

allan said...

NY caps are the same way.

They are good only in that you can't tell what is going on unless you get real close.

Joe Grav said...

Didn't he basically invent race-baiting political ads?

Joe Grav said...

I don't like to f*ck with colors or logos in general, so I'm with you. The green things on St. Patrick's Day suck

laura k said...

OMG now they're kissing George's ass. I may have to go inside.

allan said...

TEK IS ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Grav said...

HAHA that's the only way Varitek can get a hit

I'll take it

Sarah Haendler said...

I actually mind our caps less just because we generally wear those colors anyhow.

And because I know I won't be seeing those on the subway.

Ugh - the verbal birthday card makes me irritable. Let's kick these guys hard!

laura k said...

They're talking about Steinbrenner revitalizing the team!!!! Does no one remember the 15 years when Steinbrenner's name was synonomous w/ the devil, when Yogi Berra boycotted the Stadium, when everyone in NYC wore blue and orange and the Yankees were a laughingstock???? AM I THE ONLY ONE??????

Joe Grav said...

Please plunk Lugo.

allan said...

i'm sure race-baiting politics/campaigns dates back to before helms was born.

for modern times, maybe you are thinking of lee atwater?

laura k said...

I don't like any of the gimmicky unis or caps. No surprise there.

Joe Grav said...

Yes. You are the only one.

George Steinbrenner is only in his 70s? I thought he was at least 350.

FUCK YOU LUGO

Joe Grav said...

for modern times, maybe you are thinking of lee atwater?

Maybe. I'll look it up.

laura k said...

I don't think Jesse Helms had an original thought in his head, ever. He was not a maverick - he was a dinosaur.

allan said...

YES must be doing this at every home game telecast. Thank Don we had NESN last night.

Do they mean George or Hankee?

George likely doesn't know what day it is, let alone delivering one of his Patton speeches.

laura k said...

Lee Atwater, that's a name I haven't thought of in a long time. What a scumbag.

laura k said...

Lee Atwater on Wiki

Joe Grav said...

Who called Helms a maverick?

allan said...

Anyone remember after the MFY lost to Cleveland 22-0 in 2003(?), George did all kinds of silly motivation stuff, including blasting some Billy Ocean toons (some song called "When the Going Gets Tough") during BP???

Joe Grav said...

I just read that. It looks like Helms had him beat by 8 years:

In 1972, Helms announced his candidacy for a seat in the United States Senate. He won the Republican primary with 60.1 percent of the vote and eliminated two intraparty opponents. Meanwhile, the Democrats retired the ailing Senator B. Everett Jordan, who lost his primary, 55.3 percent to 44.6 percent, to Congressman Nick Galifianakis of Durham. Helms played upon Galifianakis' ethnicity during the campaign, running under the slogan "Vote for Helms—He's One of Us!".

laura k said...

They mean George. No mention of Hank. It's George's BD, and they still refer to him as the principal owner.

Joe Grav said...

2003(?)

2004

Yeah, too fcking funny

laura k said...

You said he invented something. You didn't use the word maverick, but that's what I was referring to.

laura k said...

A, I remember that.

allan said...

It was early September 2004. He also invoked 9/11, saying that his team would rally back to greatness like the city did.

Joe Grav said...

I remember reading something somewhere that referred to him as the 'father' of race baiting TV ads.

Although, like A said, I'm sure it's been going on forever

Joe Grav said...

I remember that, too. What a fucking clown

laura k said...

That's what I meant, too. I highly doubt he invented anything. People are always being referred to as the father of this or that.

allan said...

So L, you still watching YES?

Joe Grav said...

Too easy

laura k said...

I'm still outside w/ YES. But this set up is not conducive to enjoying the game. I'm going to see which network is on TV (including Rogers) and maybe I'll go in. TOo bad, b/c it's beautiful out here, me and Tala relaxing in the cool breeze.

laura k said...

Altho having no commercials is great.

allan said...

Time for DJ Werd to spin another hit.

Joe Grav said...

Is it just me, or does every person who wears a Yankee replica jersey automatically look like a douchebag?

When I see people in Yankee caps, I can have reasonable conversations with them, but the jersey just kills it

It's not just because I hate the Yankees, either. I feel the same way about people wearing Boston Celtics jerseys, and I like the Celtics. Also, the Oakland Raiders (NFL), the Montreal Canadiens (NHL), Italy (soccer). I see you in the jersey, I assume you're a douchebag.

Is that bad?

allan said...

nice vest, waldman.

laura k said...

Is it just me, or does every person who wears a Yankee replica jersey automatically look like a douchebag?

I'd have to say that's you, Joe. :)

Joe Grav said...

Come on Manny.

laura k said...

Where's the game???? Where's the game on MLBTV??? IT'S GONE!

Joe Grav said...

I'd have to say that's you, Joe. :)

Oh okay. Hahah

allan said...

Doctor to Rasner: "This may hurt a bit."

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm about to head out - cookout in the Jerz, but I'll be listening on the radio in the car. Dear Sox, please rain on the Georgie Parade.

allan said...

I'd have to say that's you, Joe. :)

Not so fast!

allan said...

i still have mlbtv

andy said...

I must say this MLBtv game is perfect video quality. it is filling my big screen tv and it looks like a real tv broadcast in HD. Now the audio portion is a little off. The yankees guys are off base most of the time. how can you be so mislead and yankee cunt licking all the time?

I sometimes open a new window and play the WRKO broadcast with the video but it is out of sync but worth it.

laura k said...

mlbtv has crapped out here. i'm going inside to watch nesn! A: you're on for a while. brb.

Joe Grav said...

Ahh, suck. At least we got the one.

Joe Grav said...

Not so fast!

Holler

allan said...

though i'm not sure why i saw a fox news logo on YES at the start of this inning ...

allan said...

you have the 1.2M andy? i opted for the cheap 400K.

andy said...

YES = fair and balanced

laura k said...

holy shit!!! someone fill me in! i saw runs 2 + 3 score, nothing else this inning.

Joe Grav said...

allan said...

amazing -- ball stayed on top of the fence.

laura k said...

I sometimes open a new window and play the WRKO broadcast with the video but it is out of sync but worth it.

I can't stand the delay. But the audio is way better that way.

Wow, fucking Noodle out there!

Joe Grav said...

HAHAHAHAHAHHAH

andy said...

Yeah we don't get any broadcast out here so I don't ever have the NESN option. When Fox promises to show a game on Saturday they black it out on MLBtv then they show the Dodgers.
So in order to see the Sox its MLBtv premium. and hooked to my big screen its awesome.

andy said...

OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Joe Grav said...

Who the fuck is this guy?

laura k said...

That shot of the wall on the ball, with Damon's legs sticking up in the air in the foreground!!! That is priceless.

Joe Grav said...

I want that to be my new wallpaper, L

andy said...

He was robbed of a homerun by the wall collapsing

nixon33 said...

happy 4th everybody!
WHAT A CRAZY PLAY!

laura k said...

Andy, don't you sometimes get NESN on MLBTV? Or you just mean you can't see NESN on TV.

Joe Grav said...

That was fucking hilarious. HAHAHA I'm still laughing. HAHAHAHA

laura k said...

One of the funniest things I've ever seen in a game!

nick said...

Holy Fluking Baseball!

That was pretty darn amazing.

I haven't been around in ages, so hello all.

allan said...

i love the guy on the other side of the fence pointing crazily at the ball, waiting for noodle to turn around and notice!

Joe Grav said...

Not as good as Manny's high 5

andy said...

L: NESN on MLBtv only. I wish now that I got Direct TV and had them set my local area as Boston.

Somebody please find that picture I would also like the wallpaper.

allan said...

Hey, Jetes, looks like the ghosts helped the Sox out there!!!

laura k said...

Both classics for different reasons! Great wallpaper, good call. :-D

nixon33 said...

tek looks like fucking captain america with that cheesy bullshit on.

allan said...

that better be on the back on some tabloid tomorrow!

nixon33 said...

ok beckett, settle down now.

Joe Grav said...

I ask, again, who the F*** is this guy?

Beckett, show him the heat.

laura k said...

Uh-oh Nix, that's what Michael Kay said, without the cursing.

Andy, right, I always forget about the DirecTV thing. We were spared that b/c DirecTV doesn't exist in Canada, so they let the local cable companies carry the MLB package.

MLBTV to the big screen sounds great, tho.

Joe Grav said...

ha!

allan said...

Photos may soon appear here.

Joe Grav said...

ZOMG HEIDI

laura k said...

so will someone tell me what happened in that inning, before the ball ended up on the wall and noodles ended up on his ass?

andy said...

I do like to see games on other team's home stations though. It is just so funny ow much they are haters. And how much they are off base. I know I am bias to the Sox of course but I am honest and realistic. There are occasionally the stations that kiss the Sox ass. Either way is annoying. And this Kay guy is stupid like a washing machine.

nixon33 said...

looks like ive been listening to too much michael kay, hes the guy i love to hate.

Joe Grav said...

Ellsbury bunt single, Pedroia single, put the two on. I forget what Manny did.

laura k said...

Andy, me too, I like to see the other broadcasts, but YES is awful. In NY I used to watch w/ the game on mute and the radio sound. Delay not as bad when it's regular local radio.

andy said...

I just got the video hilite on my phone so i will see if i can extract the shot.

allan said...

(i thought of capt america when i first posted about it.)

inning
lyndon bunt single, no play for arod
fuck yeah line single lcf
drew grounded out to hgh
manny walked on 4 pitches
lowell hit sac fly to lf
yook did his thing!!!

laura k said...

Today in 1939 was Lou Gehrig's "day" - the speech that overshadowed his entire incredible career.

My fave player evah.

nixon33 said...

i know i'll get ripped for saying this, but in terms of actual in-game analysis, i do think yes is better than nesn. lieter is awesome, so is flash, i like paul o'neill in the booth too.
dont get me wrong, i love don and jery, but... maybe its just that its different.

laura k said...

thank you joe and A

allan said...

i won't rip you, i tend to agree.

when it comes to getting deep into the game/talking about strategy, nesn flat out sucks.

Joe Grav said...

i know i'll get ripped for saying this,

BLASPHEMY

My fave player evah.

BLASPHEMY

allan said...

work - gotta scan/format a 2-page doc! back soon.

andy said...

Oh hell the quality of my screen shot pic on my phone is not that good. I will defer to the experts on the internet.

Jack Marshall said...

Would Girardi have walked Youk if Tek and not Crisp were batting next, I wonder?

Joe Grav said...

VariteKKKKKKKKKK

nixon33 said...

yeah, i think al leiter should win an emmy! or whatever it is that broadcasters win.

i dont like, however, sterling in comparison to joe c. but unfortunately when i do my "old-guy-at-the-game-listening-to-the-game-on-the-radio" impersonation, i'll be forced to listen to sterling. maybe espn radio will have it too? lesser of two evils

laura k said...

lou gehrig, blasphemy? hell no. he was one of the very greatest players ever to have lived, and also a great man.

i know i'll get ripped for saying this, but in terms of actual in-game analysis, i do think yes is better than nesn.

I totally agree. There is almost no analysis on NESN! I only dislike YES b/c of Kay. And I know I don't need to explain that one!

nixon33 said...

hey sox, rasner isnt good, expose him.

Joe Grav said...

Wow. Joey Chestnut wins the 'dog-off' against Kobiyashi..... I think I'm gonna be sick

HAHA Jacoby does it again!

nick said...

omg--dog-off.

I think emma and I are going to go see the pittsfield dukes play at historic wakonah park tonight. with fireworks!

"the hand"

Benjamin said...

Looks like bunting his way out of a slump is working for Jacoby.

laura k said...

Leiter is very good, and refreshingly honest. Girardi was good too, and O'Neill is too. Singleton isn't so good but not irritating.

Ugh, that disgusting hot-dog thing. Enough to turn me vegetarian again - or anexoric.

Joe Grav said...

I think emma and I are going to go see the pittsfield dukes play at historic wakonah park tonight. with fireworks!

Go Silkworms! :-p

Benjamin said...

You stopped being vegetarian? Quitter.

nick said...

not bulemic?

what a rundown..almost got out of it.

fuck.

nixon33 said...

FUCK.
oh well pedro will lead off...

laura k said...

LBJ almost beat the rundown! That would have been great... but no.

laura k said...

You stopped being vegetarian? Quitter.

Whoa, tough crowd. I was a vegetarian for a few years, more than 10 years ago. It wasn't for me.

I'm sure you've heard me talking about grass-fed beef around here.

not bulemic?

No, cause it would never get that far. I see that shit and I just want to stop eating altogether.

nick said...

Emma was cracking up over the name. worms. worms. they're going to be playing worms.

not that I've ever been to Wahconah park before. for shame.

andy said...

I'm not mad at Jacboy there. Best case he's on 2nd worst case the new Ty Cobb, as the houston announcers dubbed him, gets to lead off in the next inning.

Jacboy, typo, but sounds right.

laura k said...

jacboy, nice typo!

uh oh, teener sighting.

laura k said...

Where is this historic park and why is it historic?

andy said...

I prefer my cows to eat brain meat.

Joe Grav said...

not that I've ever been to Wahconah park before. for shame.

Invest in the box seats. The bleachers haven't been upgraded since 1892.

laura k said...

god that mustache is just too funny!!

brains, very good for cows, i've heard. makes 'em angry.

Joe Grav said...

andy said...

I love NESN for MLBtv because they are always in HD full screen format for me. The FSN games are never full screen and look shitty. YES is awesome for picture too. I like NESN because Don and Yerry are entertaining. I know enough about the game to not need to hear about it like I am an child. I prefer to hear the banter and watch the game. It's like being there.Perfect.

nixon33 said...

curious as to why a-rod isnt trying to steal. you think they'd be WAY more aggressive after that meeting.

nixon33 said...

whew.

andy said...

Grass fed cows for the motherfucking win. I rarely eat beef anymore. Mostly chicken and pork and yummmy fish for us. My wife hates it. She will eat hamburger helper everynight if I let her.

I am trying to introduce her to new flavors and new foods.

nick said...

I was thinking more like instant onset bulimia.

Box seats sold out for tonight. they have fireworks tomorrow night too, but I have to work tomorrow.
Wahconah Park on wikipedia.

laura k said...

Thanks for the link, lovely little park. So why it is historic? Very old?

Andy, I enjoy the banter, too - more now since Jerry stopped selling his own shit so much. But I do miss the analysis. And Don gets SOOO boring, reading everyone's birthday and the day they broke in and the day they adopted their puppy.

FOUL! HA.

nixon33 said...

come on beckett, put him away

andy said...

I would like to see that velcro stuck to my below belly button bush

That ball is fair if it's gone! and ittttttt's foul.Way to go Mr. Kay.

laura k said...

Instant onset, oh yes indeedy! I will check out the Wiki link.

nixon33 said...

beckett laboring a bit, or labouring depending on where you are.

Joe Grav said...

YEah, built in 1892, home to tons of minor league teams (and thus a bunch of future major leaguers).

Also unique in that it faces the sunset, so they have 20-minute 'sun delays' at around 7:30

laura k said...

shut up crowd, it's a fly out

Mostly chicken and pork and yummmy fish for us. My wife hates it. She will eat hamburger helper everynight if I let her.

I am trying to introduce her to new flavors and new foods.

I did that for Allan long ago. We eat lots of fish, esp salmon, and chicken and organic steaks.

And of course sushi and dim sum and such.

laura k said...

labouring, eh :)

laura k said...

1892, seriously old park!

laura k said...

Ah, it's the site of that game Bouton organized, with Bill Lee, Tim Robbins, et al. Nice.

Wiki says 1919, which is still plenty old.

nixon33 said...

mmmmm, sushi.

nick said...

thanks for that link, joe. swell pictures & commentary, but it makes the bleacher benches look somewhat uninviting (go figure) for the $2 less than actual seats. but, I think we'll rough it anyways tonight.

andy said...

We could hang out for dinner often then. Sounds like my diet. Salmon is perfect. Perfect. I like to grill it. squeeze some lemon on it.

broil it with a white wine butter sauce.

kabobs with teryaki marinated salmon and asparagus.

nixon33 said...

a lot of 3-2 counts today for beckett, no?

allan said...

i'm back - let's go josh!

nixon33 said...

i'd like a double play here.

laura k said...

i love sushi. i could eat it every day if that were possible.

those kabobs sound good too. we grill teriyaki salmon a lot.

we ate tons of fish in nfld (duh), very fresh and delish. pretty much every lunch and dinner was fish.

allan had a moose burger, too. i would have had one, but they wouldn't make it rare - which is why i don't eat burgers anymore.

nixon33 said...

NICE FUCKING CATCH!

laura k said...

nice catch!!

allan said...

a lot of 3-2 counts today for beckett, no?

none before this inning.

but all three batters here.

allan said...

that's how it's done, sir noodle!!!!!

andy said...

Two Outer here baby cmon lets do it.

laura k said...

god i love that kid. although i won't be as graphic as our friend andy.

FUCK hbp.
get out of this! UGH

allan said...

josh plunks the dud. loaded.

andy said...

I just realized how far behind the 1.2 broadcast is. I was asking for a DP when you were cheering the catch.

Why does that get a warning?
