G91: Yankees 5, Red Sox 4 (10)

Red Sox - 000 030 100 0 - 4 7 1
Yankees - 010 001 200 1 - 5 8 1
This contest evolved from a game I thought the Red Sox had pretty well in hand to a toss-up to a loss. Boston is now 5 GB the white-hot Rays.

Wakefield was fantastic (again!) for 5.1 innings, allowing only two baserunners to the first 18 New York hitters: Kabbalah McBluelips's home run leading off the second and a walk to Giambi to begin the fifth.

Boston struck for three runs off Joba in the top of the fifth: Youkilis and Casey singled and Crisp walked. Ball four to Ococ was a wild pitch that scored Yook (who slid into JtC's right leg and then had a pitch thrown behind his ass his next time up). After Lugo and Cash struck out, Ellsbury walked and Pedroia singled in two more runs. 3-1 Sox.

With one out in the sixth, Wakefield allowed a single to Gardner, who stole second and scored on Jeter's RBI single. CI took second on an errant pick-off throw, but was doubled off when Lugo leapt skyward to haul in Abreu's line drive.

Lugo again got the best of Jetes a few minutes later when, in the top of the seventh, he got credit for an infield single up the middle and took second on an error by the Yankee captain, who (uncharacteristically) ranged far to his left to snare the grounder. Cash followed with a line drive double into the left field corner and Boston led 4-2.

A-Rod singled to open the seventh against Wakefield and after Timmeh retired HGH on a flyball, Tito went wisely to the pen. But Lopez was not sharp. After Posada singled, Cano tripled in both runners to tie the game. After a fielder's choice nailed Cano at the plate, Delcarmen came in to fan Molina.

In the top of the ninth, facing Rivera, Casey singled and went to second on Crisp's bunt. Varitek was sent up to hit for Lugo (why?) and he shattered his bat on the first pitch, tapping weakly back to the mound. Casey went to third, but he died there as Manny, hitting for Cash, stood stock still and looked at three straight strikes to end the inning.

MDC pitched a perfect eighth, Okajima matched him in the ninth, and Papelbon came on for the 10th. Cano grounded an 0-2 pitch into center field for a leadoff single. Milk Dud bunted him to second and Bot blew Betemit away with pure heat. Gardner fell behind 0-2 but fouled off two pitches, took two balls, then fouled off another heater. On the 8th pitch of the at-bat, he grounded a ball up the middle. Cora dove to his left, deflecting the ball into short center, but neither Pedroia nor Crisp could make a play as Cano scored the winning run.

Tampa topped the Royals 9-2 and lead the East (and Red Sox) by a whopping five games. New York remains 9 GB.

***

Tim Wakefield (3.72, 115 ERA+) / Joba Chamberlain (2.22, 182 ERA+)

Wakefield has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last seven starts (dating back to May 28). He has allowed a grand total of 11 runs (1.98 ERA).

***

David Ortiz may take BP on Monday and "might be able to begin a rehab stint in the minors after the All-Star break". ... Bartolo Colon long-tossed from 120 feet and may throw off a mound this week.

Dustin Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 13 games (with nine multi-hit games (log)). Tony Massarotti, Herald:
The author of a 13-game hitting streak, Pedroia has raised his average from .260 to .313. During that stretch, in 57 at-bats, Pedroia had an absurd 30 hits, a batting average of .526.

That isn't a streak. It's an avalanche. ...

Since May 1, 2007, among major leaguers with at least 700 plate appearances, Pedroia's .324 average ranks behind only Magglio Ordonez, Ichiro Suzuki and Placido Polanco in the AL.
Gordon Edes reports that Javier Lopez
has allowed just one earned run in his last 15 outings (15.2 innings). You can go back even further - in his last 28 appearances, he has allowed just three earned runs in 25 innings, an ERA of 1.08. His ERA of 2.10 ranks in the top five among AL relievers with 30 innings or more.

Lopez still has too many walks - 14 in 34.1 innings - but many of those came early. He's walked just three in his last 11 appearances.
Joe McDonald, Journal:
On this current three-city road trip, the Red Sox have produced 13 bases-loaded situations. However, Boston is 1-for-11 with only three runs scored, including a sacrifice fly. In fact, the Sox are 0-for-their-last-9 with the bases juiced.

Overall, they are 1-for-19 with one walk, four sacrifice flies, and eight strikeouts and have grounded into two double plays in their last 24 bases-loaded situations.
Also: Doing the Red Sox's laundry.

Never forget -- I love you all!

Since June 12, Tampa has gone 16-4. They have won 10 of their last 11 games.

This must stop. You hear me, Royals?

tek, all star.

allan said...

9-2.

Fuck duh Rays.

allan said...

Wait ... Tito picked Tek as a reserve?

OMG!

That's worse than any MFY pick Torre ever made.

Jack Marshall said...

It sure is worse. That's disgraceful, and a gift to all the Sox bashers. Admittedly, with Posada not able to catch much, Martinez and Ivan Rodriguez hurt (and he's not really an All-Star either), the choices are thin. But still---if I were Tek, I'd decline politely. Tito's loyalty is touching, but in this case as in others, stupid.

nixon33 said...

the players picked tek.

laura k said...

Come on, Nix, don't spoil the fun with facts.

allan said...

the players picked tek.

Oh.

Then that's a good reason why players should not be analysing the game on TV.

nixon33 said...

yeah, buster olney described player voting as them forced to fill out the cards and calling out in the clubhouse "who should i vote for catcher?"
and someone randomly calling out in response "uh..varitek?"
"yeah...varitek."

nixon33 said...

any suggestions on what train is best to take?
4 vs. D?

allan said...

Fin.

KC: 020 000 000 - 2 5 0
TB: 014 202 00x - 9 13 2

Fuck.

4.5 GB.

allan said...

Okay, we win, move to 4 GB, and drop NY to 10 GB.

laura k said...

Whichever you're closer to will work. The D used to be better, but it's been a while, so who knows.

Have fun!! Good job you're going today and not yesterday.

nixon33 said...

sounds good to me!

laura k said...

WHY WON'T THE DEVIL RAYS LOSE??????

allan said...

WHY WON'T THE DEVIL RAYS LOSE??????

Seriously.

11 of 12 / 17 of 21.

Regress to the fucking mean already!!!!

Jack Marshall said...

They won't lose because:

1) They are on a high right now and playing over their heads. The crash is coming, however. It always does.

2) They are playing KC, which is just coming down after playing over ITS head...

3) They are going through a bunch of games where mediocre players are getting key hits with two outs, as opposed to the Sox, who aren't.

4) They are a good team. But not .800 ball good. My guess is that they'll play .500 ball after the break---good enough for the play-offs, but not to beat the Sox. The bullpen will come back to earth, and the hitting is just so-so.

laura k said...

I wasn't asking. I was just venting.

Jack Marshall said...

oh.

allan said...

If you type "nicknames glossary" into Google, JoS comes up #1!

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, LF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. J.D. Drew, RF
4. Mike Lowell, 3B
5. Kevin Youkilis, 1B
6. Sean Casey, DH
7. Coco Crisp, CF
8. Julio Lugo, SS
9. Kevin Cash, C

Wakefield = Day off for Manny! Though we do likely improve with Cash.

Those of you w/o visible email addresses or blogs should be happy today. You've been spared some random insults from "i-girl" and "redsock." . That's redsock. with a dot at the end.

This may be the hardest working troll in North America.

Jack Marshall said...

And another sub-par line-up for a Wakefield game...

laura k said...

Jack, have you ever been happy this season?

I mean no disrespect. I just wonder, do you ever say anything about this team that's not a complaint?

allan said...

troll

i have identified 16 different posts under at least 5 different personas he left at 9 different blogs overnight last night -- this total does not count the ones that got removed by various blog owners -- and i mean all night:

8:17 PM to 4:59 AM

thanks the low traffic at many of these blogs in the middle of the night, i now know where his IP server is. i got him on the run and i will smoke him out of his cave.

laura k said...

in afghanistan, is he?

allan said...

I mean no disrespect. I just wonder, do you ever say anything about this team that's not a complaint?

I think he once said he liked that Fenway did not have a dome.

Jere said...

Morgan notes what a quick worker Jobber is. Will he say the same about Wake, or pull a Wallace Matthews?

Jere said...

The troll is probably wondering why I'm posting here, since he posed as redsock telling me I "wasn't welcome at Joy of Sox".

laura k said...

He told wmtc readers to stop linking to wmtc because "we no longer share the same values", and told JoS readers to stay out of game threads.

I hear your post contained a little extra love. :)

laura k said...

Walk! Nice.

allan said...

I may be a grouch, but I could never turn you guys away (sniff)!

Jere said...

"extra love"

yeah, "redsock" called me a bitch!

It's funny how the person wouldn't realize that people have relationships besides what's made public.

laura k said...

I know! He went to a blogger who's a good friend of mine IRL - and a regular reader - and said something like, "You should see what L-girl is saying about you at wmtc!!!"

laura k said...

So Nix is there tonight, somewhere in the upper deck.

Rob said...

These Yankees/Red Sox are losing their luster. O'Brien was asking Castig what he had for lunch today.

laura k said...

I feel for you guys. That's a terrible feeling.

I still remember a roll of film I ruined on my first trip to Paris.

Jake of All Trades said...

Anyone else interested in Joe C's dinner?

Rob said...

.ish, I recently lost a LOT of pics thanks to my laptop dying. It stu-diddly-unk.

Yep, had that happen three years ago. The computer knows there is a card in there, but it won't recognize it at the same time. Very confusing. My camera says the card is damaged. So, I'm not convinced the data is gone.

laura k said...

Anyone else interested in Joe C's dinner?

I kind of was. It sounded tasty.

I'm just happy I'm not listening to Joe Morgan.

Jere said...

Casey, couldja foul that off or something?

Joe Grav said...

greetings from lynn

laura k said...

O'Brien was asking Castig what he had for lunch today.

To be fair, it was in a semi-baseball context.

But yeah, the big ticket now is Red Sox / Rays!

Joe Grav said...

excuse me if this has already been mentioned

Rob said...

I'm just hoping Joba's dinner doesn't sit well with him. chicken caesar salad and spaghetti with bolognese sauce.

Yeah, I don't mind the food talk very much. They're keeping the broadcast well-rounded.

C.C. Sabathia has been traded to Milwaukee.

Rob said...

59 mph Yankee Stadium speed on that pitch.

SoSock said...

OK, OK, enough of the replays.
A-rod hit a home run. Big deal

Patrick said...

I thought it was very lame how the Indians were letting Sabathia pitch 110+ pitches a game after they decided to trade him.

What happened to the Indians?

Rob said...

It's still not Tribe Time.

laura k said...

I thought it was very lame how the Indians were letting Sabathia pitch 110+ pitches a game after they decided to trade him.

It's awful. I hate when stuff like that happens. And there's nothing the player can do about it.

How did Emma enjoy the game the other night? The Worms.

Pic I took of the guy next to me at ALCS game 7.

laura k said...

Tough loss for Seattle! Ouch.

Patrick said...

OOOO, doughnuts. Sounds good.

I'm drinking kefir. Anyone ever had it? It's a fermented milk drink, similar to yogurt.

laura k said...

I love yogurt, but I can't stand kefir. It seems like milk gone bad to me. What's the trick?

Joe Grav said...

hou/atl on to the 17th

nick said...

well, since she's still brushing her teeth. I've been meaning to report on that game. It was fun. I liked the park, inexpensive, small and a good environment. I plan on going back this summer.

the poor 2nd baseman for the dukes made 3 fielding errors and waved off on two fly balls only to have his ass covered by the outfielders.

They were down 5-1 and had a 5 run 7th to come back and win. exciting. Fireworks were decent and fun. We got free cotton candy, which emma had never had before. magical sugar, of course.

Emma got bored with the game somewhere around the bottom of the 1st, but politely feigned interest throughout.

Joe Grav said...

BTW L, the details for my Toronto trip are like 95% set, shoot me an email later

laura k said...

In that Seattle game, a catcher was brought in to pitch. And there were still 3 pitchers left in the pen!

Jere said...

I'll say it for the millionth time: Getting 25,000 of your own fans to drown out the 20,000 fans rooting for the other team is NOT impressive. I can't believe that the visual portion of that Rays report actually needed to stay on the screen while the game was going on.

Patrick said...

That Seattle game sounded really weird. The manager sounds as bad if not worse than McLaren.

Brandon Morrow was available to pitch. Morrow is like a Pappelbon.

laura k said...

Joe, when you know what you're doing, let me know, ok?

laura k said...

nick, that sounds great. free cotton candy and fireworks might have made up for her boredom.

Joe Grav said...

Patrick said...

Kefir from the store is nasty (I don't know if that's what you're referring to). The trick is the culture which is in the form of 'grains', which are like boogery clumps. They look gross, but you separate them into your next batch.

Joe Grav said...

game seems to be moving quickly

laura k said...

Yes, from the store, where else? I don't do things like make my own kefir. (Or anything else.)

Boogery clumps, sounds delicious...

Patrick said...

I predict a double from the doctor.

Joe Grav said...

BTW, for some odd reason I called in to WEEI this weekend.

The host was complaining that
1) baseball games were too long
2) baseball was, therefore, losing popularity
3) small market teams can't contend
4) in this economy (?!?!) people would rather devote their time to football because it's only 16 games

My replies were, basically, No, No, No, & No. To the host's credit, he didn't cut me off, but he continued to repeat his baseless opinion without actually fact-checking himself.

Patrick said...

I'm a terrible cook, but I always put together healthy concoctions, like bone stock or kefir.

Patrick said...

It's like I blinked and Pedroia's average changed from .260 to .310

Jack Marshall said...

Laura: I can't help it the Redsock took the Grouch icon. And yes, this season has generally pissed me off, because I think the team is a LOT better than its record.

laura k said...

Have you guys seen Sarah Gates' blog? It's really good - great title.

laura k said...

Jack, ok, just checking. :)

laura k said...

Oh yeah, we talked about the bunnies here. Never mind.

Joe Grav said...

yes, ahahaha. Audacity of Hop. Love it.

My girlfriend and I are starting our own blog inspired by something we saw someone else do in (I think) Washington DC - we're gonna take a picture of ourselves at every stop on the "T," Boston's subway system

laura k said...

That's cool. I always want to do the "picture of something everywhere" thing - but I usually think of it after I've passed some opportunities that I can't get back, and will be incomplete... so I don't.

laura k said...

we're gonna take a picture of ourselves at every stop on the "T," Boston's subway system

Now if you did that in NYC, that would be something. Lotta stops.

Joe Grav said...

I thought the same thing, but I figured I'm young and I use the T all the time, so I have time to do this.

Joe Grav said...

Now if you did that in NYC, that would be something. Lotta stops.

We're not THAT young. ;)

Oh yeah, it makes total sense. My ideas always involve places I'll never be again.
