G97: Red Sox 2, Orioles 1

Orioles - 000 000 001 - 1 7 1
Red Sox - 100 100 00x - 2 7 0
The Red Sox are back in first place (.5 GA)!

This was a long game (3:32) filled with plenty of baserunners, but very few runs. Boston stranded 11 runners in the first five innings. And until Aubrey Huff's single in tyhe ninth inning, Baltimore had six hits, seven walks, a hit batter and a stolen base -- and still had no runs.

Bot allowed three singles in the ninth, but slammed the door on the longest "first half" in team history (97 games) by retiring Melvin Mora (who stranded 11 runners all by himself).

Pedroia singled and took second on Freddie Bynum's throwing error in the second, then scored on Drew's double into the left field corner. Casey doubled to start the fourth and eventually scored on Pedroia's force out.

Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 5-2 and Toronto dispatched New York 4-1.

***

Daniel Cabrera (4.40, 95 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.84, 152 ERA+)

Terry Francona announced the rotation to start the second half, which begins Friday night in Anaheim:
0718 @ Angels - Clay Buchholz (6 days rest)
0719 @ Angels - Josh Beckett (9 days)
0720 @ Angels - Tim Wakefield (7 days)

0721 @ Mariners - Jon Lester (12 days)
0722 @ Mariners - Daisuke Matsuzaka (8 days)
0723 @ Mariners - Clay Buchholz
This will give both Josh Beckett and Jon Lester some extra rest.

At 1 PM:
Rays/Spiders
Yankees/Blue Jays

Oi. Glad I got spared that sort of bodily response. I ate there twice.

Joe Grav said...

Heh. Steak and Shake. It reminds me of this place in Revere called - really - "Steak and Seafood."

It's located where a Burger King used to be, but it shut down after getting sued because some sort of assault happened there.

You can't make shit like this up

tim said...

first 201 for me i think. and what a quality comment it was.

Rob said...

Nope. Wasn't me. I could've. I eyed that 200 and thought, you can quickly do it. DO IT. But no. I have better values than that these days. I am born again.

Rob said...

I love the restaurant next to the Hilltop in Saugus that simply says, "EAT!"

Joe Grav said...

I can't wait until I am born again. Until then, I feel free to do whatever I want!

for the longest time, I thought that's what it was called. It broke my heart when I found out it had a different name. I forget what it is, though.

tim said...

heh.

"Yo tony and i messed up this guy down at the steak and seafood - he thought his bisque was better than my bisque, so i shoved a lobster up his ass"

I always kinda laugh about the whole born-again phenomenon. Boof. Born again.

Yeah, I always knew it had another name, but I don't know what it is, either.

Eh, not important.

If you ever happen to be driving on I-40 in Tennessee and you want the real damn deal, there's a place about halfway between Knoxville and Nashville, in Crossville, right off the highway, called The Bean Pot.

Just freaking great.

Joe Grav said...

It's so easy to do, too! The real genuises are the ones who manage to be born again right before they croak. Those are my idols.

Rob said...

We're TIED.

Now, to seal the deal.

Heh. I just saw on CNN a tanker truck that flipped and was leaking chemicals - in Crossville, TN!

tim said...

Be back in an inning or so. Gotta go collect some cash.

Sarah Haendler said...

Just don't cut it too fine, Joe. What if you die right before you were planning on being born again?

Hmm... depending on your belief system, that could actually lead to being born. Again.

tim said...

Down at the Steak and Seafood.

That was more, Thank you Rays, rather than Thank you Red Sox. Still be 2 or 3 GB if they won a couple of those 7.

Yeah. Crashed on I-40. But hey, those people are pros I'd think.

Rob said...

Jeemer loosening in the Sox pen.

Joe Grav said...

Ever since I started referring to them exclusively as the Devil Rays, they be suckin' again. That's what I'm talkin' about.

Sarah Haendler said...

I-40 from Crossville eastbound down the hill to Knoxville is pretty awesome to drive. But what's awesome in a civic, is probably treacherous in a semi.

allan said...

No LOB that inning -- Yay!!!

Jeemer in.

I was thinking about good driving roads earlier. New Brunswick has rather inflated speed limits - 50 mph roads there are usually 35-40 here. Hilly, windy. I'd love to take a well-cornering car up there.

As for interstates, I'd say I-81 from Harrisburg to Scranton is a very nice drive, also.

allan said...

sexson sucks so bad ... he'd be a good fit.

allan said...

Remy on Dice: "Houdini!"

?!?!?

Rob said...

So, I'm thinking of going to see the Sea Dogs one of the three games Ortiz has during his rehab stint. Have to purchase those tickets early, though. I went up there to see Lester pitch last year, thinking I could walk up and purchase tickets.

Not so much.

Youk has a bruised triceps. X-Rays negatory.

nixon33 said...

hes def threading!

Sarah Haendler said...

I-81, good choice. Part of the fun of the aforementioned stretch of 40 is that the limit there is 70.

Now I'm driving around the country in my head looking for other ones...

allan said...

ish, feel free to file a report/pictures!

Rob said...

Now I'm driving around the country in my head looking for other ones...

I-93 from Plymouth, NH up to St. Johnsbury, VT is pretty good, too. Windy and hilly, scenic views. 65 mph that feels faster than it is.

I-95 north of Bangor, Maine quite literally goes through the middle of nowhere, which is nice if you're fancying a little bit of speed.

Does New Britain fill up usually? The Sea Dogs seem to draw more and more fans in the past few years. They always drew well, selling up 15 or so games a year when they were a Marlins affiliate. Now, I'll bet they get pretty crowded.

nixon33 said...

im going to to see ortiz at the toilet on aug 27

Rob said...

Actually, it'd be great to have a big league player play for one of those smaller teams to draw interest to the games, like the NECBU. Imagine if Ortiz had a rehab assignment with Sanford or North Shore.

Rob said...

I laughed more than usual on that one.

allan said...

Huff SASAHE!

Joe Grav said...

The Rock Cats are really popular, but last night was the biggest crowd in Rock Cat history.

(i.e., the Sea Dogs had a lot to do with it)

I'm not sure if Grant and I are going to get a chance to take our usual 3 day Connecticut baseball vacation, since I'm going to Toronto at the end of August... we'll see. The last two years we did North Shore Spirit @ New Haven Cutters + we got to New Britain and Norwich

Benjamin said...

You want Ortiz rehabbing *below* AA?

Yeah. I'd say Burlington is a 4 hour drive or so from here.

Joe Grav said...

When I went to Montpelier for the Navs game, they served Poutine at the concession stand and some of the road signs were in French.

My casual university beer-league softball team could use Ortiz for a rehab appearance or two. Maybe then we wouldn't suck so bad.

SoSock said...

Good job, MDC.
I got to see Jim Abbott at W-S 3 times when he tried to make his comeback. Mid 90's I think, but I'm not sure.
That was amazing. He was so fun to watch. That's about as close as we've come to having an established star here, although we've seen a lot of people who went on to become stars later. In fact they've been doing a series lately in our paper about the future stars who played at Ernie Shore Field. Pretty good reading.

allan said...

I can't imagine what Burlington's like.

Wow. My grandmother lives 15 miles from the ME/NB border and there are no french signs.

The only indication is a gas station says $1.13/litre.

Rob said...

I want to see Ortiz hit a soft-ball like those guys who go to the big league stadiums and hit balls 500+ feet.

$1.13/litre

Cheap. I just paid 1.36 - the day after seeing 1.31. :<(

We saw 1.45-1.50 in Newfoundland.

allan said...

Ernie Shore - Red Sox pitcher in the days of yore.

I saw $1.44 in Grand Falls, New Brunswick.

allan said...

Does Casey stop at first and chat before running on to second???

tim said...

Jeeze, $1.13 would be a steal. I think we're up to $1.36 here. I've basically stopped driving for the most part, so I don't keep up with it as much.

But I've heard out east, and even in Quebec, it's upwards of $1.45.

SoSock said...

Ernie - a great story, one of the reason's I'm a Red Sox fan. The guy here with me, Bobby, his grandfather was one of Ernie's best friends. They roomed together a while. Ernie returned to W-S and wound up being the county sherriff for years. Bob's grandfather was the local game warden amd I've heard a lot of great stories involving moonshine stills, etc.
I'm working on a story about Ernie that will be posted on my blog one day, including his infamous "almost" no-hitter, but it will probably not be finished till after my team's season ends.

Rob said...

Lot of baserunnners, lot of Dice-K.

I expect all Matsuzaker starts to go at least 3.5 hours.

I've gotta head up to waterloo in about 10 min....hopefully will be able to see the end of this. Or see the red sox put it out of reach with another 7 run inning

Papelbon's being given multiple reminders that even with a hard fastball, you still need to pitch. It's been interesting how he's been this season, with blown saves, etc. Seems like he feels like he can just heave it through there every time. Most of the time it works.

My BL team suffered their first loss last night due to the same thing. My pitcher has been overpowering so far every time he's started, no one can touch him. But last night they caught up and he just kept trying to throw harder instead of adjusting.
Should have pulled him sooner than I did, but my pen's pretty shakey. - Sound familiar?
