Jason Bay To Red Sox As Manny Dealt To Dodgers

According to the Globe:
Boston gets Jason Bay from Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh gets Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss from Boston and 3B Andy LaRoche and AA pitcher Bryan Morris from Los Angeles.

Los Angeles gets Manny Ramirez from Boston.

thanks for thinking of me :-p

I purposely bought a kind w/o nuts. Cranberries instead.

That's actually a great idea. Cranberries in banana bread. I don't like baked goods with nuts.

Tony said...

btw, it's real nice being able to comment here and chat with you fine folks. Makes me wonder why I didn't do it more before.

laura k said...

This stuff is so moist. It's like gingerbread.

And... it's all gone. I only bought a small loaf, thinking it was only for Allan. Then I gobbled half of it.

Patrick said...

High dudes?

Amy said...

I meant did he stop after the accident, or was it hit and run? Sounds like he did stop from what you say about the police being outside his truck.

Joe Grav said...

btw, in case people remembered/were wondering, my surgery, which was supposed to be yesterday, has been indefinitely postponed (probably until about january, but it depends on doctor availability)

laura k said...

Yeah Tony we are great. :)

And welcome!

Rob said...

I think, correctly if I'm wrong, that this is the first 200+ comment post ever on an off-day.

Thanks, Manny!

Amy said...

Welcome, Tony. It took me a while to comment last season. Once you start, it's addictive, so better expect to "waste" lots of time here.

laura k said...

I remembered and was wondering! I didn't remember the exact date (I can't even do that for my own life), but I knew it was coming up.

Is it good it was postponed or not good?

Amy said...

Oh, yeah, Joe. Why did they cancel? Was it Manny's fault?

Patrick said...

My Dad doesn't write me anymore now that he has a girlfriend.

Anyone know the best way to get rid of a succubus? I was thinking silver bullets might do the trick, but I'm worried that they might just make it mad. I'm not trained to handle a charging succubus.

Rob said...

My sisters told me he wanted to leave. They were following us and saw the whole thing happen. One sister and her boyfriend kept him from leaving.

Tony said...

Yankees have the bases juiced, down 12-4 in the 9th, no outs.

Talk about a horribly transparent way to get K-Rod another save.

Amy said...

Patrick??? What? A succubus? What am I missing here?

laura k said...

baked goods with nuts.

LOL

Ish, you're probably right re comments.

Patrick, btw, you didn't have to lie about your age. The niece you have so much in common with is 23.

nixon33 said...

i remember last night when it was manny at bat in the 8th and don obviousillo said "they could be mannys last at bat as a red sock" i said aloud 'this isnt going to be mannys last at bat as a red sock!"

i've been wrong before.

A little night musing said...

'm going to get to watch Vin Scully announce a Manny Ramirez at-bat. That's all sorts of crazy and (sorry to say it) kinda awesome.

OMG tony, you've found the silver lining!

Patrick said...

Said niece isn't in Oregon, by chance?

Amy said...

Patrick, are you keeping your avatar?

Rob said...

Patrick, btw, you didn't have to lie about your age. The niece you have so much in common with is 23.

LMAO!

laura k said...

Unfortunately, if your dad wanted to get rid of the succubus, he'd do it himself. He must be having fun. Too bad he can't have fun and still make time for you. Bah.

Ish, good for your sisters and the bf. What a schmuck.

Rob said...

Said niece isn't in Oregon, by chance?

So, were you joking when you said a couple of days ago, your wife ____________?

Patrick said...

Hell yes I'm keeping this Avatar. Manny is an example to us all. He's like a zen master live in the moment type guy. Never be afraid to be goofy, and never take things too seriously. The picture embodies that at its best.

She lived in Portland for several years, finished her college ed at Lewis & Clark.

But she recently moved to Berkeley to do a course in organic/local/slow food stuff. She's going to Italy as a delegate in the bienniel (sp?) Slow Food Convention.

She's also an artist, has lived and traveled in India on her own. And has a great sense of humour, loves funny people.

Tony said...

OMG tony, you've found the silver lining!

Wouldn't call that a SILVER lining...maybe dyed platinum blonde. And I agree with l-girl that you have an interesting and well-written blog.

Angels win 12-6. Just keep doing that, you bastards!

laura k said...

So, were you joking when you said a couple of days ago, your wife ____________?

!!!!!!!

Patrick said...

I said I have a wife?

Nope. I'm just a dude in his shorts, in a room of his mom's house with a bowl of hamburger helper. Nothing more.

laura k said...

Now, the other niece is 21 and drop-dead gorgeous, also brilliant, but it's the one out west that I'm fixing up w/ Patrick.

Amy said...

OK, looked up succubus. Learn something new every day.

Amy said...

Isn't Patrick in Maine? That's a long distance for a set up.

Tony said...

Nope. I'm just a dude in his shorts, in a room of his mom's house with a bowl of hamburger helper. Nothing more.

You don't, by any chance, have a blog, do you???

(/MSM hack)

laura k said...

Nix, great avatar! Man, Lou in that pic, oh boy...

Copa Yard Sale said...

Good night all. May the Sox win tomorrow...

Patrick said...

HAHAHAH! good joke, Tony! got me laughing out loud.

allan said...

Careful -- Patrick has a niece fixation!

nixon33 said...

LOU IS THE REAL DEAL!

laura k said...

Amy, I know, it's crazy. But I've always thought they have so much in common. Then I spoke w/ her the other night, and right after that, Patrick said he was going to Oregon - where she lived until recently. I couldn't help myself.

Patrick said...

Well, it's more of a daughter fixation, to be honest.

s1c said...

So according to Sean McAdam the players in the club house basically said - door - ass - don't.

Hmmm, I thought it was just Schilling that had problems with him?

Will miss the fun but not the annual drama.

allan said...

Nope. I'm just a dude in his shorts, in a room of his mom's house with a bowl of hamburger helper. Nothing more.

You better be in the basement!!!!

BASEMENT!

Amy said...

Hey, you never know. Stranger things have worked. Why not give it a try? (The Patrick-niece connection, that is.)

Tony said...

Thanks, Patrick! It actually works a little better if you imagine Buzz Bissinger saying it with that "you little pissant" look he had on his face throughout the entire Costas Now segment.

Listening to Vin Scully is the baseball equivalent of a nice warm bath. Man, he is great.

laura k said...

don obviousillo

Nice!

Patrick said...

This old farm house has a crawl space for a basement. I'm trollish but lurking is more of a hobby of mine than a full time thing.

Amy said...

OK, I am off to sleep. Let's hope that tomorrow brings a win and that we all feel a bit better. I will be going to the game on Sat night. It will be odd to see the lineup without Manny and with the new guy in Schilling's uniform.

Why can't things stay the same?

nixon33 said...

looks like i picked the wrong night to quit drinking.

laura k said...

The drama never ends w/ Boston. It didn't start when Manny arrived and it won't stop now that he's gone.

Tony said...

By the way, Lowe's going for the Dodgers tonight. Too bad it couldn't be tomorrow - now THAT would be some good timing.

laura k said...

G'night Amy!

Joe Grav said...

It was My Mom being My Mom.

Rob said...

Too bad Gump wasn't still managing the Dodgers.

allan said...

Because Jerry Remy would still be playing 2B.

s1c said...

Agreed, but with Manny it always seemed to be at a higher pitch.

laura k said...

Sure. Good old MMBMM.

Too bad Gump wasn't still managing the Dodgers.

Don't wish that on Manny!

I told L today I want him to be hired when Girardi gets fired.

laura k said...

s1c, true.

If that happens, I will break my no-drinking rule and go out and just get absolutely ripped.

s1c said...

Not sure if you caught the NESN trade deadline special but Carfado mentioned Nomar being reunited with Manny and how Nomar always hated fielding questions about Manny. I had forgotten that but I bet Nomar is glad he is on the DL right now.

Dodgers vs Sox in WS. Any bets on who hits Manny?

Jack Marshall said...

Perspective: The Red Sox actually have a good record of rising through these player-team controversies and ending strong. In '78, Bill Lee staged a mid-season walk-out and personal "strike" to protest the trading of Bernie Carbo. The Sox got to the play-offs..Lee was dumped the next year for Stan Papi, which is to say, nothing. Oil Can Boyd also walked out on the team in 1986 because he wasn't chosen for the All-Star team, and was suspended (the team tried to trade him but couldn't get any value)---and the Sox won the pennant. Both of those were a lot worse than anything Manny may have done this season. I loved Bill Lee, but I will always believe that he lost the Sox the Division with his tantrum.

Gammons went after him and Boyd, too.

A little night musing said...

Well, I was thinking it was because than the universe would still be compressed into a pre-Big-Bang singularity. But whatever.

laura k said...

Guess I'll call it a day now. Nice hanging out with you all. See you tomorrow to welcome our new Canadian player to Fenway.

Joe Grav said...

Basically, without going into it too much, she said that she didn't think I was ready to handle the post-op stuff, too much responsibility, etc. And she did one of those, "It's your choice, but... (nag nag nag 24 hours a day every day)"

So I postponed it for the time being

Joe Grav said...

I'm going to try to go to Fenway tomorrow.

That McAdam article was rather surprising. Assuming that was the real case. I don't see Theo ever saying that was the case, though.

Vin is the best. He is just The Best.

Vin Scully is still working? I didn't know that. He has to be in his 80s.
I grew up in Northern California, so we got to listen to Vin Scully, Lon Simmons (Giants -- he was really whiny and bitchy ... even if the Giants lost 12-0 (and they often did) it was always the umps' fault), and Bill King (Oakland), who was really snide and snarky. Vin was definitely the best of the three.

Tony said...

Probably time to break things up. Have a good night, all.

s1c said...

Ish - I think it probably is true. Last couple of days you just sense that some people in the club house were like Wells "He's messing with my cake."

I personally think that when Terry came out and said, "he came in said his knee has been bothering him for a while . . . " that was the throwing him under the bus moment. Francona never throws someone under the bus.

I hope Manny enjoys success elsewhere, but to be honest, I think he is in for a big surprise. I just don't see anybody giving him a 4/100 contract.

As for the #38 for Bay. Look for 25 grand to be passed to ALS charity.

A pretty girl around my age just came to my door looking for some Jared character. Me there in just shorts, was surprised by happy to help her find her way.

Yes, yes it is.

Now that is over.....

RS: It's time to dust off that jpeg........I need a light switch..

L, you seem to be taking this quite hard....

For those of you who wanted Texeira , well you got him minus the switch hit. And Bay rarely hits into double plays...

I went back to 2004 to see comments when Nomar was traded, did I see right no comments at all, this blog came a long way.

YardSox said...

Manny is the greatest hitter I ever saw. Nomar in '99 and '00 might have come close, but I have never seen a better hitter than Manny. This sucks. The fucking Boston media drove him out of town. Screw them and their witchhunt - everyone of them. And while Bay may be a decent player, no way is this a good move. I do wonder how Yankee fans are viewing this. (Alan - you may remember me from several years ago in battle with Lou Dilullo at YankeeTradition happy gumdrop land....).
There are a million great Manny moments to relive. My favorite might have been his game winning homer against the Angels in game two last year. I never saw a ball leave a ballpark so quick. Or maybe the two run HR he hit when Pedro beat the Yanks in 2004 - I was at that game with my son and had the good luck to sit behind home plate. I said to my son it's gone as he started his swing. Hanging curveball - the sort he would crush.
I am a diehard since '75, but the Sox got a little less fun today and for no damn good reason. Thanks CHB and all the sheep who bought into the propaganda.....

No, really I just got home, else I would have been sobbing into my beer WITH you all.

I'm heartbroken. I didn't vomit though, just for the record.

tim said...

ish - glad to hear you are ok! sounds like a really scary moment. its amazing how something like that just gives you a perspective on things, like you already mentioned.

looks like Manny is going to be wearing 28 in LA since 24 is retired. currently watching that game now...D-Backs up 2-1, Lowe was cruising then had a bad inning. Pitchers duel though.

tim said...

There it is, D-Backs win 2-1.

As for where Bay is going to hit...I think Tito is going to want to keep the R-L-R-L order, meaning that Drew and Papi won't be back to back.

Don't wanna throw Bay into the fire either, and have him hitting cleanup.

Gah, there's so many conundrums - fuck Ellsbury! Why couldn't you just keep up the high OBP! I would say throw Yook in the cleanup spot, but that means we'll need a #2 hitter. Ahh no point in discussing it, we'll see what Tito has up his sleeve tomorrow.

I'd just like to say what a fantastic blog this is. Even though I disagree with both the owner of this blog and the owner of We Move To Canada about the Manny situation, it is still far and away the Red Sox blog I read the most, and WMTC is a blog I read quite a bit. I don't think that you've covered this little episode as well as possible, but I understand fanhood. I will still wear my two-sizes too big bleach stained Manny Ramirez shirt (hell, I still wear my Tony Graffanino shirt, which has long since been oil stained to oblivion.)

However, I think this was the right move. Everyone will learn to love Jason Bay (btw: in Pittsburg, there were a bunch of fans who wore red swimsuits to Bucs games and called themselves the "Baywatch." Sort of like the Rambis Youth, for the Lakers in the 80's). I won't say anything else on the Manny subject, not one word, because it won't convince anyone, and I don't want to make the people who run two of my favorite blogs mad. Also, I read Every Bob Dylan Song, and I don't want to make him mad, either.

Keep on Rockin' In the Freeworld, Redsock and L-Girl. I'll try to post a little bit more so that maybe I can join in some conversations here without people suspecting I'm some EEI following idiot. Like I said before, I've got a summer job at Fenway, and hopefully I can add some insight to your conversations. Y'all kick ass.

Andy Laroche is no slouch, either. He was the Dodgers #2 prospect (behind Kernshaw) heading into the year, and he'll probably be a Mike Lowell type throughout his career. The Dodgers are run terribly, and are afraid to give their young players a chance.

Hey thanks, James. Just to be clear, I have no input into the content of this blog. I'm listed as a team member only because I have rights to moderate comments. (And Allan can moderate comments on wmtc.) We do that so comments can get through faster, since one of us is usually at a computer at any given time.

But Joy of Sox is completely Allan's. I thought you agreed with him on the Manny trade, but maybe I couldn't keep track of who thought what.

Thanks for reading wmtc. Cool.

Rob said...

Did she get the foolong or the 6inch?

That made me laugh so hard it hurt, lmao. Oh man.

Then Andy shows up and says four words, none of them include any sexual innuendo. This Manny trade has really taken its toll.

Rob said...

As far as the morning after goes, I feel a little bit better about the trade. As unfortunate as this whole situation was, I feel like it was a good move given the circumstances. I still wish the Red Sox would have picked up a reliever at the deadline.

Maybe in Waivers August.

Jack Marshall said...

Upon reflection, I think the most obviously wrongheaded accusation I hear is that "the media drove Manny out of town."

That's obviously untrue---the Boston media has never had that power, and has less now than ever. It has always been negative about the team and its players, and Sox fans are NOT sheep. Just because they happen to arrive at the same conclusion as the media doesn't mean they are led by the media. The team's management even less so.
So many sources report that Manny's team mates were convinced he had quit on them that it is stretching credulity to suggest it is all made up. Schilling obviously never approved of Manny, but his comments can be taken seriously too. Manny drove Manny out of town, and quite possibly intentionally. It's fine to say that his work haibts prove that "he cared,' but he obviously didn't care enough about the shared objective (winning) to keep his mouth shut and stop threatening sit-down strikes because of the contract HE signed eight years ago. I believe the players resent that. And they are right to do so.

laura k said...

Sox fans are NOT sheep.

Sox fans are no different than any other fans, or any other people. Some think for themselves, many do not.

Rob said...

Sox fans are no different than any other fans, or any other people. Some think for themselves, many do not.

That's why every city has the "Best Fans in the World" and I will never tell a Yankee fan that Red Sox fans are somehow better than Yankee fans, and I will not agree that the opposite is true.

Patrick said...

I still don't get 9Casey's joke.

Jere and I used to argue about this all the time. Having lived on both sides of the fence, to me it seems obvious that all fans are the same. There are jerks everywhere, great fans everywhere, sheeple everywhere.
