G10: Red Sox 10, Orioles 8

Orioles - 070 100 000 - 8 11 1
Red Sox - 041 032 00x - 10 12 0
Penny wasn't worth a plugged nickel in the second, throwing 40 pitches, walking three Orioles (including two with the bases loaded) and giving up a grand slam to Nick Markakis.

But the Red Sox rallied. In the home half, they scored four times, two coming on Jason Bay's third dong of the young season. They actually had the tying run at the plate, but Kevin Youkilis grounded out to end the inning.

J.D. Drew hit a solo homer to start the third and Nick Green's two-run double off the wall in dead center brought in two more, tying the game in the fifth. A sac fly from Bay and a single from Mike Lowell gave the Sox their go-ahead runs.

Drew finished the night having reached base five times (three walks, home run, triple) and scoring thrice. Green and Jacoby Ellsbury each had two hits and Dustin Pedroia had three. David Ortiz continued to struggle, hitting a sac fly in the second, striking out three times and popping up to third.

Manny Delcarmen pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, though he did allow an inherited runner to score. Ramon Ramirez came on with two on and two outs in the sixth and retired Ty Wigginton, set down the side in order in the seventh, then wilted in the seventh, allowing two one-out singles. On came Hideki Okajima, who got Markakis to fly to the track in center, then struck out Aubrey Huff. Jonathan Papelbon surrendered a lead-off single in the ninth, but got two first-pitch fly balls to right and then fanned Felix Pie to save it.

***

Jeremy Guthrie (2.25, 227 ERA+) / Brad Penny (4.50, 116 ERA+)

The 3-6 Red Sox are happy to be back at Fenway Park. They begin nine-game home stand (against the Orioles, Twins and Yankees) tonight.

Penny allowed five hits and three runs over six innings against the Angels last Saturday. He has pitched in Fenway Park only once before: June 29, 2003. He allowed nine hits and nine runs in five innings and Boston beat Florida 11-7. That was two days after the infamous 25-8 rout of the Marlins. ... Guthrie threw six shutout innings against the Rays last Saturday.

Jason Bay has reached base in all nine games this year, and in 22 consecutive regular season starts dating back to September 12, 2008.

I was going for it too L.

I think I'm out of the weeds re work.

laura k said...

Is everyone feeling a bit better?

nick said...

on fire!!!

emma's toothpaste is 4.6OZ net weight. but I think it's smaller than 3OZ by volume. looked on the TSA site but they don't specify a distinction. gel shoe inserts are not permitted, however.

laura k said...

I wasn't even trying (201).

Jere said...

And Kim casually points out "it's hard to judge the pitch since the pitcher's head covers the plate.."

I know!!!!! NESN's terri-cam lives in in '09. And no, I'm not used to it because every road trip we get the good angle, then it's back to this high, centered crap.

allan said...

Another smash from DJ Werd!

laura k said...

Emma's toothpaste is a real risk to passenger safety.

Her toothpaste hates freedom.

laura k said...

And my first Jere comment on the camera angle of the season!

Amy said...

Tek ahead in the count? Imagine that!

andy said...

Who woulda guessed that.

Amy said...

But not for long.

nick said...

the War on Moisture is utterly idiotic. I will not rant on Security Theater. I will not rant on Security Theater. I will not rant on Security Theater.

andy said...

Freedom Paste is what I use.

laura k said...

yes, it is insane. i just check everything through these days. i'd rather wait for luggage than go through all that getting thru security.

andy said...

What's to stop someone from swallowing c4 and detonating it from within?

laura k said...

if you don't use freedom paste, the terrorists have won.

laura k said...

There's a lot of "what's to stop..." scenarios.

Are we going to have to remove our shoes for the rest of our lives? Will they ever ramp it down, do you think?

Benjamin said...

Ok, now Penny's getting squeezed.

allan said...

Pennyzaka.

andy said...

Yeah like they haven't won any ground yet. They did a turn around on our strategy of bankrupting the USSR.

laura k said...

hello tito...

allan said...

So the firm I work for fired 27 people this week, including my co-worker on the weekend. My likelihood of watching Sox gamnes uninterrupted just got a wee bit more unlikely.

Amy said...

I've gone the other extreme. Carry on only if I can. I just get into the zone and wait through security. I hate losing luggage.

I guess this is where we are close enough that Francona is willing to go to the bullpen.

andy said...

Now that it's normal to remove shoes it will never get easier. Unless the perfect the active xray technology.

laura k said...

they're a good excuse. now that the US doesn't have communism as an excuse, it's gotta have something.

Amy said...

Allan, I was afraid you were going to say your chances of watching games uninterrupted became more likely. I guess better to have the job than to get to watch more games...

laura k said...

My firm fired 48 people last month. That's pretty much why I don't thread on weekends. Among other crappy things.

andy said...

We're ok here Manny doesn't give up runs to his own runners.

Benjamin said...

So the firm I work for fired 27 people this week, including my co-worker on the weekend. My likelihood of watching Sox gamnes uninterrupted just got a wee bit more unlikely.

What day of the week? There was a thread on SoSH about Canadian firing practices.

laura k said...

We both dodged bullets. But the working conditions for those still standing get a lot worse.

allan said...

No idea which day.

Amy said...

Wow, those are both law firms, right? I don't know how any of our students are going to find jobs with so many experienced lawyers out of work.

allan said...

I did play Lotto today, however.

So perhaps an entire season of watching at home on a 200-inch TV with unlimited bubbly is just around the corner.

andy said...

coco puffs one over the wall

Zenslinger said...

3-run HR for Coco!

laura k said...

Yes, both law firms. No lawyers were let go at my firm. Only support staff.

Glad you bought a ticket, A. :)

Benjamin said...

Crap.

Amy said...

Blech. MDC not exactly putting out fires here.

andy said...

ahhh he does it again.

Jere said...

Can any of you hi-def people tell what's written under MDC's hat brim? Looks like "____ FOR ME". Possibly Do it For Me.

allan said...

Penny: 3-6-8-5-1, 85

Jere said...

Two different people were following the Royals game? Or did DO say it?

Amy said...

Lawyers are certainly get laid off at lots of firms in the US. I worry about my daughter and my son-in-law, though both say that so far all it has meant is that they are both working longer hours. Not really sure there is that much less work as opposed to firms using the economy to cut costs and work employees harder.

Amy said...

I meant "using the economy as an excuse."

Before Andy picks on me again....

laura k said...

That's what that happened at my firm - used the economy as an excuse. It sucks.

Benjamin said...

Another nice play from Green.

Amy said...

Nice play by Green!

allan said...

And so what happens? An attorney call me and says she and 2 other people need to reserve some time for tomorrow, about 5 hours. But since I am the only one here on Saturdays (now), that will mean there is no one to do any other work that might come in. So the firm will pay a weekday person overtime to come in. I have a feeling this will now happen a lot on Saturdays.

laura k said...

Oo Pumpsie, tell us all about the racists in Boston.

allan said...

Oy. Pumpsie -- debuted for Boston 13 fucking years after Jackie Robinson.

Someone check that story!

Benjamin said...

Oo Pumpsie, tell us all about the racists in Boston.

Somehow he hasn't mentioned that part yet.

Benjamin said...

His hair's growing in the dark.

Amy said...

So rather than pay someone the normal rate, they will pay someone else overtime? Yeah, that makes sense.

laura k said...

They call that "flexible staffing". We call it getting dumped on.

allan said...

1959 Log

laura k said...

It is definitely cheaper for them. No salary, no benefits, and the OT gets charged to the client.

andy said...

Way to belittle an old man Remy

allan said...

12 years, I guess!

Surrpised Jackie wasn't dead by the time Green came in.

Yanks were the third last team, btw.

laura k said...

I detest the euphemism "breaking the color barrier".

Benjamin said...

Well, if they only need overtime a third of the time, they break even by making Alan do it all.

Jere said...

He didn't mention we won the '04 WS on his birthday.

allan said...

Pinky Higgins was his manager, now THERE was a drunk racist.

Amy said...

I guess the analogy here is when the school hires adjuncts rather than hiring tenure track faculty---no benefits, lower pay.

I never thought about the fact that they could charge the OT to the client.

laura k said...

A, what %age of staff was let go? At my firm it was almost one-third.

allan said...

He seems like a nice guy, but if he felt like it, he could really let fly with some serious truth.

What would NESN do -- cut his microphone? Tell Don to say thanks and shove him out the door?

allan said...

Quite a bit less than that. I don't now, though. There are 250 lawyers, I think.

laura k said...

Maybe they invited him because they know he won't do that.

Amy said...

1 2 3 !

Benjamin said...

That 7-pitch inning was Wakefieldian.

allan said...

I detest the euphemism "breaking the color barrier".Probably for the best in this case. It's certainly nicer than:

"Token black player who wasn't all that good, but since it had been more than a decade since Robinson, the Sox had to sign SOMEONE, so they got a guy who will suck and then they can get rid of him in a year or three?"

Willie Mays might have made a good Sock -- nah ...

allan said...

I'd like some Tater Tots.

Benjamin said...

CWS 5 - FKR 2 in the sixth.

allan said...

Don telling Guthrie's life story ........ zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Jere said...

Yay talking!

allan said...

FIIII-YUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Benjamin said...

WTF are they playing the Francona press conference while Drew gets a triple?

Amy said...

Hey, Drew hit a triple and we barely saw it!

laura k said...

why the hell are we listening to tito and heidi while ON FIRE is hitting a triple???

wtf nesn?

andy said...

Drew with the 2 hardest legs of the Cycle out of the way. Show Kinsler how a real man does it.

Amy said...

Is Drew now just missing a double for the cycle, or did he walk the first time on? Oh, yeah, never mind. He walked.

Jere said...

he could get the cycle-with-walk

andy said...

I'm watching the game on HD now for Jere and his hat question. There is no sound on that channel. I just saw heidi hit a sac fly to move drew over to third I think. with no sound all I can confirm is that drew is definitely on third.

andy said...

Yeah kinsler didn't get a walk so why should his bat go to cooperstown. I guess his bat did more work then Drews.

Amy said...

Andy, why no sound with HD?

Amy said...

B2B BBs

Benjamin said...

Please, Tek.

andy said...

Allan quick! Has a team ever lost a game when one of their players hits for the cycle?

Jere said...

i realized MDC's hat thing is like a full sentence, going all the way around the brim. So it's something like "Hey Manny DO IT FOR ME don't shit the bed Love Mom"

allan said...

Has a team ever lost a game when one of their players hits for the cycle?Probably.

Jere said...

I'm sure plenty of losers cycled...

andy said...

Amy, I don't know it just has no sound. The A's game has no sound either. I'm guessing there is no noise in either of those parks. It would be cool if this extra innings thing had the no talking all crowd sounds channel.

Amy said...

.Tek.... do NOT swing at shit/

Benjamin said...

YES!

Amy said...

HOLY SHIT! Tek gets lucky again!

Benjamin said...

Be a hero, Green.

andy said...

What fucking luck. Who kissed a leprechaun today? Spelled that right on the first try for those of you scoring at home.

laura k said...

So it didn't totally suck to have Varitek up with the bases loaded!

Anonymous said...

Tek has never been able to hit crap with the bases loaded.
/E dosn't count.

andy said...

Of all the players Green is the only guy I'd take home to mama.

Benjamin said...

!!!!!

laura k said...

Nick Green we love you!!!!

Jere said...

8-8.

andy said...

Lowell is just happy he can trot home.

allan said...

List of all cycles from 1954-2009

Amy said...

OK, Laura, NOW you can yell at us all from being doomsdayers! TIE SCORE!

laura k said...

Andy, your mom has something against Navajos?

andy said...

That was a good pitch that he just owned there. Tito is a proud man.

Benjamin said...

Green's actually hotter looking than Ellsbury, imo.

laura k said...

OK earlier panickers, happy now????

andy said...

I figured if the sox were passing out their hunks then you would have already taken Kennedy's VP.

Amy said...

Did Andy just say scoring at home without any double entendre intended?

andy said...

KVP

laura k said...

I don't find Green attractive at all.

I'm loving him anyway, of course.

allan said...

I'm scoring at work.

Amy said...

There you go, Laura. How could you resist? We are bad, bad fans and deserve your scorn!! :)

laura k said...

Ah, good point, Andy. Lyndon wouldn't be available.

Pepe Lepew said...

Who is this Nick Green?
He pleases me!

andy said...

Are you fucking kidding me if I could take any of them home with me it would be FY. Can you imagine the fucking conversations we would have. Probably we would fight and play wrestle. Maybe a little twister, some wine or vodka or both with some beer. You see where I'm going.

allan said...

All Sox runs from the 5-6-7-8 guys

laura k said...

Amy, I'm holding back, I swear! I had to leave the thread for a while, you were all pissing me off so much. That and the fucking boos at Fenway. I just hate it! (I'm laughing now, tho.)

andy said...

Stupid jacoby you are supposed to slide head first into first.

Jere said...

John Mabry had a natural cycle and his team lost.

laura k said...

I do see where you're going, Andy. I'm enjoying the view.

andy said...

Laura, what are you talking about?

Grant Salzano said...

Helluva game here.

allan said...

Someone say something stupid and WEEIish. I wanna watch L go off.

andy said...

Laura, I mean what are you talking about on the subject of leaving the thread and being pissed off?

andy said...

The Red Sox are statistically more likely to lose this game.

andy said...

That was post 333 btw

Benjamin said...

Though now that I think of it, Green looks a bit too much like a young Tom Cruise.

andy said...

Watching in silence is really heightening my creativity.

Benjamin said...

K

allan said...

MLBTV is not showing me the game.

Jere said...

Nick Cafardo said something WEEIish before the game: It's too bad we didn't get a new park here in Boston like in New York.

allan said...

I thought this commercial break was a bit long. Fuckers. I WANT VIDEO!

andy said...

A do you have HD sound though?

Pepe Lepew said...

Blogger andy said...

The Red Sox are statistically more likely to lose this game.

According to ESPN.com, the Red Sox have a 56 percent chance of winning.

andy said...

I was trying to piss Laura off.

Jere said...

New pitcher coming in. And the cheesiest song I've ever heard is on!!!

allan said...

Nick Cafardo is a dumb as mud. How he remaims employed is a huge mystery. He admitted earlier this year he was surprised to learn people thought of David Wright as an "impact player".

Jere said...

A song that actually mentions Windsor Locks!

allan said...

About fucking time MLBTV.

idiots.

laura k said...

What is that song????

Benjamin said...

Throw strikes, asshole/Lopez.

Amy said...

Dunkin Donuts Musical Montage. Oy.

Jere said...

Brent Jordan? Oh this is great they're totally mocking that lame ass song.

laura k said...

Sorry Andy, I missed it :)

Jere said...

Okay, now I know they only chose this song because it's so mock-able.

Amy said...

Oh, God, they are playing it again. STOP.

laura k said...

That Tom Cruise pic is creepy

allan said...

boooooooooooooooooooooooooo

laura k said...

Allan, what are you boooooing?

Benjamin said...

Fucking Lopez.

Amy said...

Lopez = not doing it.

allan said...

Ram Ram will restore order to the universe.

Amy said...

Allan, don't boo Lopez. Laura will leave again.

Jere said...

L: This is how I feel about booing. Sometimes you punish your kids, doesn't mean you don't still love them.

However, Penny's adopted, so I can pick him up and shake him or give him an occasional backhand without feeling bad about it. I've instructed him to tell his teacher he fell down the stairs if she asks. She's goddamn nosy, that one.

laura k said...

amy you just made me LOL

laura k said...

Jere, I can't discuss booing with you. It's a non-negotiable for me, always has been, always will be.

allan said...

Ram-mutherfucking-Ram

Amy said...

Jere, that made me LOL! In a sick twisted way.

laura k said...

Also, I hope no one here is adopted because your analogy is offensive.

Jere said...

I just think if you get pissed, boo. I promise you I don't just boo willy nilly like Yankee fans booing Jeter after he plays a bad month after they loved him for 10 years.

allan said...

"Look to the Ram, friends, look to the Ram."

Jere said...

I just meant I'm not attached to the new guy yet. Sorry to offend.

Amy said...

I don't boo our players out loud, but certainly players I do not like. Like Gagne. I hated seeing him take the mound. Penny isn't in that category yet, but one more outing like this one.

Is there a difference between dreading to see a player (like most everyone here felt about Timlin) and booing the player? Is it just the outward public display that bothers you?

Yay, FY!

laura k said...

Jere, don't go there. I've sat in both parks. There is no difference.

allan said...

L's gettin' pissed. Yeah!

laura k said...

Of course there's a difference. We all have players we like and don't like. I'm talking about in person, in the park, booing your own players.

It makes me sick. It bothers me so much that when I hear it I hate Red Sox fans and wish bad things on them.

laura k said...

oh shut up Allan :)

(i'm laughing btw)

Benjamin said...

Papi :(

Anonymous said...

Ortiz is done, stick a fork in him.

Amy said...

I am starting to feel sorry for Papi.

And booing him is totally despicable.

allan said...

Boos?

"Yoook"s, I think.

Jere said...

Wait wait wait, now they're saying those were boos for Papi--yet Youk was coming up.

laura k said...

DO YOU HEAR THAT? RED SOX FANS ARE BOOING DAVID ORTIZ!!!

RED SOX FANS. The great diehard fans that do everything right are BOOING DAVID ORTIZ.

Benjamin said...

Shit, Youk.

allan said...

Watson: "Clean. Play on. Maybe give Baez an extra $1,000."

laura k said...

Those were not Yooooks. They were boos for Papi.

Amy said...

Ouch. Glad he got right up.

allan said...

The scoreboard put up as picture of Jeter just as Tiz struck out. The fans were booing Jeter.

andy said...

Youk played it cool. Abreu woulda been sucking his thumb.

andy said...

6 game suspension.

Amy said...

Like I said, totally despicable (booing Papi).

laura k said...

good one A

Jere said...

Another problem I have with the whole thing is that you can't "kinda boo," and some things, to me, deserve that. A crowd can only say yes or no or nothing at all, so it's always gonna sound like a full yes or a hell no. Know what I mean. "I like 49% of what you've done" gets the same sound as "I hate you"

Benjamin said...

Let's do something with this.

allan said...

Baez rattled by the HBP.

Can Bay take advantage (or is that UnCanadian)?

Jere said...

The sound of those four people booing could have been from the microphone in the bleachers. That was hardly a definitive booing of Papi. And Youk was coming up.

(Imagine if Papi had said "we need another big bat--a guy named Boone or Louis. To hit behind me just in case.")

laura k said...

No, it's cool, remember in sports Canadians turn into...

....

Amy said...

A GS here would be so pretty.

laura k said...

Jere, thank you for being so predictable. A few comments ago, I almost said "cue Jere proving that fans were not booing Papi...".

Benjamin said...

RBI.

Amy said...

We are in the lead!

Jere said...

9-8. My birthday and the score.
