Orioles - 070 100 000 - 8 11 1Penny wasn't worth a plugged nickel in the second, throwing 40 pitches, walking three Orioles (including two with the bases loaded) and giving up a grand slam to Nick Markakis.
Red Sox - 041 032 00x - 10 12 0
But the Red Sox rallied. In the home half, they scored four times, two coming on Jason Bay's third dong of the young season. They actually had the tying run at the plate, but Kevin Youkilis grounded out to end the inning.
J.D. Drew hit a solo homer to start the third and Nick Green's two-run double off the wall in dead center brought in two more, tying the game in the fifth. A sac fly from Bay and a single from Mike Lowell gave the Sox their go-ahead runs.
Drew finished the night having reached base five times (three walks, home run, triple) and scoring thrice. Green and Jacoby Ellsbury each had two hits and Dustin Pedroia had three. David Ortiz continued to struggle, hitting a sac fly in the second, striking out three times and popping up to third.
Manny Delcarmen pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, though he did allow an inherited runner to score. Ramon Ramirez came on with two on and two outs in the sixth and retired Ty Wigginton, set down the side in order in the seventh, then wilted in the seventh, allowing two one-out singles. On came Hideki Okajima, who got Markakis to fly to the track in center, then struck out Aubrey Huff. Jonathan Papelbon surrendered a lead-off single in the ninth, but got two first-pitch fly balls to right and then fanned Felix Pie to save it.

Jeremy Guthrie (2.25, 227 ERA+) / Brad Penny (4.50, 116 ERA+)
The 3-6 Red Sox are happy to be back at Fenway Park. They begin nine-game home stand (against the Orioles, Twins and Yankees) tonight.
Penny allowed five hits and three runs over six innings against the Angels last Saturday. He has pitched in Fenway Park only once before: June 29, 2003. He allowed nine hits and nine runs in five innings and Boston beat Florida 11-7. That was two days after the infamous 25-8 rout of the Marlins. ... Guthrie threw six shutout innings against the Rays last Saturday.
Jason Bay has reached base in all nine games this year, and in 22 consecutive regular season starts dating back to September 12, 2008.

Jeter short porch small package dong for the go ahead run, Mo bad call-ful strikeout to end it.
Jeter hit a game-winning home run? DAng!
Now Joe Torre will write another book about him. He'll call it, "My Never-ending Bromance with Derek..."
Court case mentioned in a document I'm proofing for formatting/consistency:
Cocks v. Manners
It often is cocks vs manners, isn't it? Cocks have been known to have very bad manners. :)
I'm not touching that cock comment........not that there is anything wrong with it...just not touchin it......
With Pap not signed long term , is Bard being groomed to be the next closer , already has 2 saves and 9k's through 6 ip..
Quite possible. Looks like Bot is a free agent after 2011.
Good evening, all. A fine night for baseball here in New England!
Cocks v Manners? I assume those were the last names of the parties--how does anyone keep a straight face?
Aw come on, Casey, let it rip.
You will like this, on my EI NESN in HD is silent, no sound. Picture is great.
It's gorgeous weather here too. I've been outside all day, sitting on the patio, reading and playing with Tala. Cody was lounging in the shade all day. And now baseball! A lovely day, now all we need is a win. I keep missing them.
Oh shit I just read the law suit thing. What sorts of naughty things do cocks do L?
You tell me, Andy. What do I know about naughty things.
I see they are wearing their marketing hats.
Here's an actual quote from Cocks v. Manners:
"A voluntary association of women for the purpose of working out their own salvation by religious
exercises and self-denial seems to me to have none of the requisites of a charitable institution, whether
the word 'charitable' is used in its popular sense or in its legal sense."
How rare is this? Neither a white nor gray jersey in a Red Sox game.
(Also, how dumb is this?)
Self-denial! Now that's not cocks or manners, just stupid!
Thanks for that, Benjamin. Good old Lexus/Nexus, eh.
Also the shitty hanging sox hats.
The Red Sox look like they're out for a softball game.
Remind me, why is everyone so down on the hanging sox hats? I like them, I just don't like the red jerseys.
Right--the socks hat goes with the red jersey at home and the blue on the road.
there goes the no-hitter.
"elevate" - DRINK!
L: For me, I've worn a "hanging sox" hat for years--but I just don't feel like we need a hat besides the B on the field--and if they do have to wear those, give it an outline! It looks so weird to me without an outline. And the one I wear is a lighter blue. To me the field one is just too dark and non-outliney.

I see they are wearing their marketing hats.the Cocks?
The dark hat with the white sock-tips, just doesn't appeal to me.
Ahh, it's an OLD case. I thought it was a pending case that Allan's firm was working on.
Laura, I had to laugh at your Lexus/Nexus. It is actually spelled LEXIS, unlike the Toyota car. There is a big trademark case where Mead Data, the then owners of Lexis, sued Toyota for trademark infringement, and the judges ruled (in part) that Lexus and Lexis sound different enough that there was no likelihood that consumers would be confused.
So much for that!
Thanks for that, Benjamin. Good old Lexus/Nexus, eh.
Nah, just Google. I don't have House of Lords stuff in my subscription.
L: I do hate how people talk about the "socks" as if it's some new concept, and not just the same socks we've had for decades, which happen to be on the hat now.
Why hanging sox on Fridays? Religious reasons? Are the red jerseys for Fridays now?
Weak.
The shot of Farrell showed the difference between outlined and non-outlined. The socks on his sleeve (on red background with white outline) looks great! Then look up at his hat, and me no likey.
Non-outliney. Hm.
There's no need for more than two unis, home and away, except merchandising. I wish the team didn't do that. But on a design basis alone, I like the hats. And I have NO idea why everyone hated the different away unis. They were completely understated and Sox-y, I thought.
you mean the blue roads or the grays?
In my usual indifference to matters of fashion, I am totally agnostic on this uniform stuff. As long as they aren't wearing the double-knots of the 70s, they are fine with me.
Jacoby, why did you just ground out to second again?
FY!
FUCK YEAH!
ooh did that hit his face?
double knits, not double knots.
no, shoulder--but it almost hit his gum bubble.
I have yet to see Jeremy Kapstein behind the plate this season. What gives?
"I don't have House of Lords stuff in my subscription."
House of Lords? It's not Canadian?
"L: I do hate how people talk about the "socks" as if it's some new concept, and not just the same socks we've had for decades, which happen to be on the hat now."
I would hate that, too, if I heard anyone talking. Luckily I don't.
Smokey (the cat) is atop the TV, leaning over and watching the action on the screen. I think he likes all the bright colors! (Or aren't cats color blind?)
Papi saddens me.
I haven't seen any blue away unis.
Agnostic or indifferent?
Indifferent. I was trying to think of a good synonym, but I guess agnostic doesn't quite work.
Me, too, Benjamin, re Papi.
Maybe you doubt the existence of the new uniforms, but aren't quite ready to deny their existence.
Fuck.
Yeah, the new alt setup (I still can't believe I'm saying this crap about my team) is a blue road with the socks hat and a red home with socks hat. They wore the blues once, and since they're saying the reds are Friday, I'd guess the blues are for road Fridays--can't remember which day it was they wore 'em.
But I thought a lot of people here liked the gray. I do, in the front and side, anyway.
Oh well. At least FY got on base.
House of Lords? It's not Canadian?
British decisions get cited a lot in other Commonwealth countries.
LOL, Laura, about your agnostic remark.
Is that revenge for my comment about your misspelling of Lexis? :)
Also, I need a refresher on the code for italicizing... Long winter without threading.
These uniforms look like spring training unis. They're just laundry, but I don't see the point.
Amy: <i>stuff</i>
The whole "alt uni" concept is a travesty.
But the new road unis that I saw in Oakland seemed totally fine to me, very much in character w/the team, but so many people were moaning about them. I didn't get it.
I didn't see any comment about my misspelling, must have missed it. I was just making a lame joke. :)
Isn't there some a href stuff in there also??
It's above---it tickled me because of a trademark case I teach about Lexis suing Lexus. Not important!
Oh, sigh, Let's not do this, guys.
I love the new regular road unis. I would never buy a jersey to wear but I am considering it with the new look.
Pull penny out put Wake in.
Href is only for making links. Itals and bold are just letters.
Oh, yeah. I thought I was confused about the code. I don't need to link yet.
I figured it was above. :)
But the new road unis that I saw in Oakland seemed totally fine to me, very much in character w/the team, but so many people were moaning about them. I didn't get it.
Because they look like the Yankees', and they make the Red Sox wear blue socks.
"gets the bad news" - DRINK!
L: You did see the blue roads. It was the game after the Angel pitcher died. You said
"Oo, I like these unis. (Except for the names.)"
It was the first road game, and we've worn gray ever since.
I'd be ok with red socks with the road unis. They have the hanging sox on the jersey in red. It would tie together.
Shit. This sucks. New uniforms, old uniforms, whatever. I just want the old team back.
Don't do this, Penny.
I know that's what people say (Yankees, blue sox), I just don't get it. No idea why anyone thinks that looks like a Yankees uni.
Come the fuck on.
For fucks sake.
the 4-pitch bases loaded walk is anti-good
Oh thanks Jere. I don't remember them, but if I liked them, then I'm glad.
sounds like the home crowd wants him run out of town. Not cool to walk in a run in your first start for the Red Sox in Fenway. The crowd will not let that go.
Andy--I was about to say, "We Blue Sox fans don't stand for that crap."
"framed by Varitek" - DRINK!
Don's on a roll
He seems nervous out there, constantly taken off his hat and rubbin his head , breathing heavy, takes forever to throw a pitch, just not comfortable........
Hunter Jones warming.
what a sweet DP that woulda been
Hunter Jones who spent his whole day on a plane.
:(
WTF? GET HIM OUT OF THERE.
urfle. gaflooks.
oh boy, here come those great fans, booing their own player in his first start as a red sox in fenway
kinda like last friday
Is he going to be the 2009 Gagne? Am I being to quick to judge?
50 pitches.
FUCK
cause if they didn't boo him, he might think he was doing a good job.
omg. holy fuck that did not just happen.
That's the guy that should be our boy--Sox fan Nick Markakis.
This is awful. I cannot watch.
And there's the cherry on top. Thank you Boston I'll be here all season, says Bradley
i fucking hate baseball fans.
Perhaps I was not too quick to judge.
WTF?
why's this load still on the mound?
Amy I teach a class on the misuse of too and to. Got your back L.
Jere said...
why's this load still on the mound?
I beleive they need him to go at least 4 innings
I can't say I expect much more from Penny. It's the Daisuke/Beckett struggles that kill me.
Don Orsillo: If you are looking for a silver lining, at least it's early.
Uh, yeah. So runs?
You mean troubles for Dice and Lester not Beckett. Beckett is the fucking man.
thanks Andy
Well. It is 10 to 1 in the morning and I'm probably not going to stay up much longer!
Funny, Andy. I caught it. It's my typing that sucks, not my spelling. :)
Lester more so than Beckett, but Beckett's last start was a bit disappointing too.
This game is lost without massive run production from our offense. The difference between the yankees and us is tito does not burn his whole pen then make JD Drew pitch. 62 losses in a year is awesome.
Well, at least we have a baserunner.
HOMRE!
Lord, I would certainly go to sleep now if I were in your time zone.
Or...maybe not! we are only five runs behind!
DOUNG!
I was just going to say.... I see this tied by the 4th.
We're just another three, uh, Drew walk + Bay dong combos away from retaking the lead.
So we hit a home run? JD Drew has just walked on MLB TV! About three minutes behind!
They have their own shiny new penny.
massive run production, coming right up
Tek to hit a HR also?
Penny Lane meet Comeback Trail
Seems like Danley's squeezing everyone tonight.
IS that Conan OBrien on 1B for the O's?
You could have hours of endless fun winding me up!
Tek you suck at hitting. prove me wrong.
Several hours ahead, but three minutes behind.
Where is Ish? He was fascinated with the time zone thing the other night.
I have to say I hate the apostrophe on the Os' hat too.
BAG!
off the bag!!!!!!!
YES! Was I the only one actually ROOTING for it to hit the base?
Buffalo Wild Wings paid Danley to lengthen the game. Tell me one of you has seen the commercials.
Nick, I was going to say 6th, but the 4th sounds good too. Stick around, the doomsayers around here are driving me nuts.
I hate all backwards apostrophes
This is going to be a weird, weird game.
A ball is gonna get stuck on the scoreboard or the ladder or something. I'm calling it now.
I have an Orioles cap in the living room here. Bad karma. The Sea Dogs cap is by my side....
If anyone besides Lowell had been at third, that would've been a sac fly.
I am calling a HR off the catwalks...oh this is a MAJOR League BASEBALL stadium not an arena for monster trucks. The rays are my 2009 Lugo/Timlin.
Pena homers for the SIXTH TIME already this year...of the Colonoscopicator himself. 1-0 TB over CWS.
Nice.
GREAT job Tek!
I like luck.
ha ha ha ha ha hahaha
!!!!!!!
We are getting some good breaks here. I will take them.
So would a good shift for LBJ be to put all the fielders around the curve behind 2nd base?
Pena is in my fantasy baseball team! Hurrah!
How about a FY dong = 7-6?
Gametracker called J. Kobe's hit a "ground ball to the left fielder"
Guthrie should've thrown at Zaun's head for calling time there.
Free naughty cock tricks for everyone if Penny gets this win.
YES!
WHAT is going on here??
So sliding works? WTF?
FY !!
HUSTLE by Tanner!!!!!
2004?
2007 ALCS actually.
A dong away from a tie. Can Papi be Papi please?
Ortiz with the monumental failure.
Papi's going to bounce one off the Budweiser sign.
now would be an excellent time for the papi of old to return...
Does anyone have the animated "f--- yeah!" gif handy?
No shift on with the bases loaded, eh?
Lame.
Well it's a run.
OK, at least a sac fly.
Still well below the papi bar.
Not as much fun, but we're still batting, and the comeback is well underway.
L: fuck yeah.
It's in one of the posts around HH's no-no.
Er, Grant.
Balk?
L: fuck yeah.Thank you sir; you are, as always, a gentleman and a scholar. :D
Lame.
Wow almost another fuck up worth a run.
At least with these Orioles, no lead is safe.
Unfortunately, Penny's still pitching.
there was a great game a couple of years ago when both teams got 8 runs in the fifth inning (mfys were one, i think).
Im gonna watch my fantasy players during Penny's pitches.
If we are no longer as far behind, how long do we wait to preserve the bullpen before taking Penny out?
Outman has given up 3 runs for the A's. Ironic.
Benjamin, by L I assume you mean Grant?
We need an inning like this one.
L: I corrected myself immediately.
oh yes, just saw the retraction.
GDGD is implying this home plate umpire is doing an impersonation of Ray Charles calling strikes.
What do we call the team with Hunter, Baker, Weaver, Brewer... the All-?? team. Not really jobs. All-Trades team?
I remember that game, RS. good fun.
Not a doomsayer, but only partly here. Helping emma pack; she's off for a week in Arizona with her mom. and her bed time is soon.
Penny isn't being squeezed as hard as Guthrie, actually.
Penny should reach his PC next inning. At 80 or so now.
All-tradesmen team, yeah.
DREW!
ON FIRE!!!!!
2-run game.
DREW!!!
Blabbity blab blab
Do it, DJ!
oh damn
