Orioles - 001 000 000 - 1 5 1Four-game sweep! We win a high-scoring game (10-8), a "normal" game (6-4), a tight game (2-1) and a rout (12-1)!
Red Sox - 210 003 60x - 12 16 2
Masterson (5.1-4-1-2-3, 84) pitched into the sixth and the pen turned in 3.2 shutout innings.
Boston got on the board right away as Ellsbury got a pop-up double down the left field line, stole third and scored on Pedroia's single. Pedroia -- 4-for-6, with 3 runs, 3 RBI -- scored on a fielder's choice. Varitek's home run to left in the second made it 3-0.
The Red Sox broke it open in the sixth as Varitek singled with one out. Then, with two gone, Ellsbury and Pedroia singled and Ortiz tripled (he also doubled, back in the first).
Baldelli left the game after third innings with a mild left hamstring strain.
Boston sent 12 men to the plate in the seventh as Radhames Liz and Matt Albers were given the Wang treatment. Bay walk, Lowell double, Varitek 5-3, Green HBP, Ellsbury single, Pedroia single, Ortiz HBP, Youkilis single, Carter F8-SAC, Bay single, Lowell single, Varitek K.
Lefty Hunter Jones made his major league debut in the ninth. Luke Scott grounded out to second. Gregg Zaun grounded out to third (and Yook made a tremendous scoop of Velazquez's low throw). Velazquez made a wild throw on Robert Andino's grounder for an error. Felix Pie put the cherry on top of this game by popping out to left.

Mark Hendrickson (3.00, 172 ERA+) / Justin Masterson (4.50, 117 ERA+)
With Daisuke Matsuzaka on the disabled list, Masterson, who threw 60 pitches over four innings last Tuesday in Oakland, gets the ball on Patriots Day. He thinks he'll be good for 75 pitches or 5-6 innings.
Jason Bay:
I played a 10 o'clock game in 'A' ball about seven years ago or something. There were like 3,000 elementary students. They bussed in for it. It will be a lot like that, I guess.Dustin Pedroia:
It's going to be early. I usually wake up around that time.In two starts this season, Hendrickson has allowed 10 runs in nine innings, but seven of the runs have been unearned.
I remember Hendrickson best for his Fenway Park cameo back on July 20, 2005. Laura and I were there celebrating our 20th anniversary of meeting. The 6-9 lefty faced only six batters: single, walk, single, double, walk, double. Boston grabbed six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-4 victory.
Hendrickson Against the Red SoxI guess what I'm trying to say is he ain't no good.
ERA IP H BB K
Career 8.56 62 95 26 24
@Fenway 8.42 31 49 14 15
Red Sox Batters vs Hendrickson
GMS AVG OBP SLG
Career 14 .351 .403 .539
@Fenway 8 .350 .409 .500
Yet the six players now on the Red Sox that have faced him -- David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, Rocco Baldelli, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Bay and Mike Lowell -- have not done well, hitting a combined .216/.280/.311.
Also: Seven of Boston's first 13 games have been played during the day. ... Red Sox bullpen ERA for the last five games? 0.86 (two runs in 21 innings).

I never used Homre, but I don't think anybody said Thunder before me, but someone totally could have.
Nick Markakis is kind of a stud. He's like JD Drew w/o all the injuries.
kind of a modest head nod to the crowd by Justin instead of a hat tip.
This whole "shaking hands with our enemies" thing is out of control. They're so hot to have enemies. Like Hugo Chavez is a great threat to the US.
"Nick Markakis is kind of a stud. He's like JD Drew w/o all the injuries."
My theory: we should've snatched him up a couple years ago. Of course, I was highly influenced by the fact that he grew up a Sox fan on Long Island. But it turns out he's really freakin good regardless.
Everytime I think of Thunder Bay I think of three Staal brothers (Jordan, Eric, Marc) who play in the NHL. NHL.com had a commercial where they went to Thunder Bay to tell the Staal parents about NHL.com because up until that point they could only make their own highlights of their kids' games. Showed three steaks in a field with the brother's hockey sweaters on them.
Guess you'd have to have seen it.
Hey, I like Canadian Bacon a lot. I for one would be flattered to be compared to Canadian Bacon.
Thunder is awfully good, though.
I never used Homre, but I don't think anybody said Thunder before me, but someone totally could have. • And I had just thought of Thunder Bay today. So I think you've got it.
201 = me
I wrote that weird--I meant that a couple years ago I thought we shoulda gone after him.
Obie: "There is a very good fielding crowd today."
If there was ever a Dave O'Brien drinking game.... You could also including an infielder "hoovering it up."
And if you drank each time he called a fastball a swifty, keep 911 on standby.
Someone could check, but being here in Canada, there is no way I was not the first person to use Thunder Bay. Not that we should use that, but ...
I love Cdn bacon! It's just usually used derogatorily.
Well this is Patriot's Day right?
There was a lot of American on that ball.
I'm also sure it dates back to last year.
spinball :(
Like shaking hands w/ someone even means anything, anyway. It's a thing that adults do with other adults they have to work with. Posturing is about the least useful thing in the world.
Dave o'Brien sucks. I'll never accept him as a home announcer
I was the first to use DOUNG.
It's a thing that adults doWhich is why Gingrich and his insane comrades can't understand it
I make a point never to watch the Today show. And that's before Kathy Lee Gifford takes over.
TWO!!!
mdp
Re shaking hands, right - that shows how insecure and defensive they are. If shaking hands threatens you, you are in bad shape.
Yeah, I didn't watch it either, I got the link off of (I think) DailyKos
jere used dong and a troll complained about it. so we started using all the time!
I used to work at Fenway and I ran a small competition to see who could come up with the best Jason Bay nickname, and Canadian Baycon, the Bay State Bomber, and the Bay Hey Kid were the finalists. I think I prefer Thunder Bay, or Thunder, to all of them.
Dave o'Brien sucks. I'll never accept him as a home announcerI actually really like him but he's got his unique, frequently used phrases like they all do.
"Like shaking hands w/ someone even means anything, anyway. It's a thing that adults do with other adults they have to work with. Posturing is about the least useful thing in the world."
James is singing my song!
"It's a thing that adults do
Which is why Gingrich and his insane comrades can't understand it"
there you go
I think 70% of wingnuts are insecure and really bothered by 'handshaking' while the other 30% are just trying to find any way to push the "Obama=Socialist=FASCIST (? I don't get it either)" meme
"I used to work at Fenway "
James now coming out for an encore! Details, please!
James, you used to work at Fenway? More info please!
ha ha jere and i thinking alike
Diplomacy is very strange, though. Every gesture, slight as they might be, are magnified and put under a microscope and analyzed for some deeper meaning.
Dennis Sarfarte, let's see if you've taken your ear medicine today.
James: I used to work at Fenway, you know me better as Jim Rice!
Amazon Bay son Jason?
"Probably the most relaxed I've been. I was on a lot of drugs during the game, [and] I don't remember a whole lot."
—Orioles reliever Dennis Sarfate, on logging 3 1/3 scoreless innings after taking medication for an ear infection.
James: I used to work at Fenway, you know me better as Jim Rice!Hahaha... this reminds me. I'm Facebook friends with one of the Bruins , and under job info it says "Employer: NHL. Position: Defenseman Employed since: 2008"
It makes me laugh every time
I used to hate DO'B on TV b/c he was a huge Manny basher. But on radio w/ Castig, I like him a lot.
Thank goodness Trupiano left before I had to listen to games on weekends. I don't know what I would have done.
Joe, which one?
Hunwick
Varingle!
I used to hate DO'B on TV b/c he was a huge Manny basher. But on radio w/ Castig, I like him a lot. I think Castig talks and sounds younger when Obie's in the booth too. He loosens up and relaxes.
His 2nd 2-hit game of the season... probably surpassing last year's total
Good afternoon JoS! Happy Marathon Monday!
Back after a busy week of tax returns (our deadline is april 30), hockey and weekend parties. I see we've been kicking some Oriole ass this weekend, let's keep it going!
What's new around here?
HunwickI can only imagine his status.
Matt Hunwick just had his spleen removed and his eye gouged.
I think this has less to do with diplomacy under a microscope than with Obama-bashing and leftist-hating.
The leftist being Chavez, not Obama!
YOu work for MLB and you can't watch this game????
upon discovering that varitek managed to leg out an infield single they now view him as a major steal threat.
and doing video stuff at the MLB network, and I figured the MLB network was a better career move*
they don't give you mlbtv as a perk?
they don't give you mlbtv as a perk? • This is MLB we're talking about. Of course they wouldn't.
Hi Tim, what's for lunch?
Ha, yes. As I told my moron friend, "The only thing the Obama/Chavez meeting should do for you is make you reflect upon how dumb the Obama=Socialist meme is."
catch made at the edge of duffy's mound
My sister in law had her spleen removed and she's fine. No eye gouging, tho. That sounds worse.
My sister in law had her spleen removed and she's fineI doubt she'll be playing hockey any time soon though. Haha
well, I definitely recommend watching the games at Professor Thom's, 2nd ave and 13th street.
Lydoningle?
Lyndingle?
Even the Chavez = Socialist meme doesn't make all *that* much sense. But name-calling is part of the whole not acting like adult things.
Just finished my chicken shawarma, L!
Joe the B's team doctor said Hunwick could be back by the end of the playoffs. That still sounds rather soon.
FY!!!!!!
FY cashes in Captain English Ball.
4-1. A solid whack. On FYre.
My cousin's husband (...cousin by marriage?) owns Professor Thom's in NY and is the NY "governor" of Red Sox Nation
Except by the time he got there, the game would be over. Or almost over.
Sister in law not playing hockey, but running and skiing. But not professionally of course.
Fuckingle!
FY thinkin' about a simple twist of sarfate.
My cousin's husband (...cousin by marriage?) owns Professor Thom's in NY and is the NY "governor" of Red Sox Nation • Wow. Connections everywhere!
Thank you, Wind.
Joe, you mean Chris Wertz? I know that dude, too.
GOOD WOOD.
Papi TRIPLE!!!!

Somebody get that man a towel!
GOOD TIMES!
What's the deal w/ professor Thom's?
Joe, you mean Chris Wertz? I know that dude, too.Yeah!
Papi going for the cycle!
Hugo Chavez is a socialist. That's not an insult, just a fact.
PAPI PAPI PAPI PAPI!!!!!!
ORTEEEZ! Good to see him get into one.
Pie came close but he's also a monster noob.
Holy shit, Papi!
papiple :)
moneyball 4
Yeah, that's true. I guess Communist is the word that they use about Chavez that isn't especially true. That and "dictator," which is a blatant lie.
i think chris of thom's emailed me about the tiant film
I would describe Chavez as a socialist (not communist) Dictator , but it's all kind of semantics
Cmon Carter
I doubt any of those people even know what socialism is.
Oh yeah. I've heard the Tiant film is pretty awesome.
Yeah, Chris was the one who sent that. He set up our book signing at Thom's.
Not semantics - there are meanings to all those words
I love how Tek has 3 HR, 4 RBI.
Fellow JoSers, it's been fun but I am being ripped away from my relaxing afternoon to play taxi and run errands and sit around and do absolutely nothing.
At least the game's in good hands.
I love how Tek has 3 HR, 4 RBI.I noticed that too haha
btw, Grant (part time JOS-er) and I are doing a two-team, head-to-head AL-only fantasy baseball league
bye ish
At least he's getting a bat on the ball... lol
Not that this is the place for this argument, but dictators aren't elected officials, and dictators don't allow their ballot measures to lose by 1 percentage point. All of Chavez's elections have been ruled fair by two independent organizations, including Carter's (the former president, not the bench bat). He has worked within the frameworks of Venezuelan law. He's centralized power quite a bit, but it's not like power in Venezuela was in state or local hands, it was in the hands of corporations and the super-rich. He's not a perfect, lovable guy, but he's a legitimate world leader and emphatically NOT a dictator.
/End Rant. Feel free to delete this if it's contrary to the spirit of Joy Of Sox.
Speak of the devil
Grant Salzano?
James, nothing is contrary to the spirit of JoS, except MUMS, Yankee trolls, and wingnuts
James, that's why we're proud to have the Citgo sign shining on Fenway Park:)
I swear I wrote Salzano's name before I saw he commented! That was weird.
Defense of Hugo Chavez is very much in the spirit of JoS - and much appreciated (by me).
Grant Salzano?
Eh?
my lineup in the 1-on-1 fantasy league:
Victor Martinez
Mark Texiera
Ian Kinsler
Evan Longoria
Michael Young
Josh Hamilton
BJ Upton
Magglio Ordonez
Justin Morneau
Vlad Guerrero
David Ortiz
Ichiro
Jason Bay
I swear I wrote Salzano's name before I saw he commented! That was weird.
Oh haha :p
I'm sitting in the library of Stonehill College waiting for my girlfriend to get out of class so we can go get Taco Bell so I'm forced to watch Gametracker. Which is lame.
"James, nothing is contrary to the spirit of JoS, except MUMS, Yankee trolls, and wingnuts"
Nice! True.
JOe, if I hear you say "Teixeira homered, but it's okay because he's on my team".... I'll....e-kick your e-butt
Taco Bell might be against the spirit of JoS.
I would never say that, Jere
I don't know what MUMS is. I think he's that rapper who did that "this is why I'm hot" song which is admittedly pretty annoying but probably not what you're talking about.
@ Joe: How many other teams are there in your league? 3?
Also forbidden: any defense of the dumbest man in history.
ANY defense!
I have no yankees on my fantasy team (league w/ friends, the only reason i joined it) - great thing i started 'tek today!
Also forbidden: any defense of the dumbest man in history.
Tim McCarver?
I thought about saying "talk of fantasy leagues" is also against the spirit, but L thought that would be mean.
So carry on. :>)
Grady, isn't it?
James, it's a 1-on-1 league, me and Grant haha. We each have 1 extra team composed of all sucky borderline major leaguers because they don't let you start w/ less than 4.
I'm done talking about it, I know it's not taken to kindly around here. Understandably so, its silly as shit.
Alright, curb the fantasy talk.
Can we still talk about Strat-O-Matic?
Re the Moron: If you don't know by now ....
GBA?
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
God gets to bless America at Fenway twice in a row due to holiday.
MUMS = Making Up Manny Shit
check your glossary!
I was kidding. I'm a kindly dictator.
I wish my name was as delicious as Pie.
In that spirit, I'll bring up the Deadspin report of Manny pinwheeling the bat over Jack McCormick and threatening to "fuck him up."
I thought Manny needed to go, but there is no way that shit is true.
Dr Doubles!!!!
The doctah is in!
Dr. Doubles!
7-1. Another double for Doubly McGee
"to third .... and beyond!"
DRINK!
Ahaha this is great:

Alright, I'm heading out to start studying for my exams. The shitty weather here coupled with old receiver is making the satellite feed choppy and this one's in the books. Later guys!
6 GAMES!
I need a new laptop. My computer slows down and I'm commenting 2 batters behind.
this chick can't pitch
That's a really cool article, Grant. Now's a good time to start investing in companies that make extra-large humidors.
Hey, this is a fun inning.
14 runs is the number to beat.
Grant--not only that, but that "wall" of stands at old YS also created so much noise--I've been waiting for them to get a new park so they'd lose a little off that home field advantage. People always act like Yankee fans are so loud, I've always thought, a crowd's a crowd--it's the shape of their building that made it louder.
FYne job of hitting there.
Papi's so close to giving Mendoza the boot. c'mon, big guy!
That [was] my boy!
and
Fuck Yeah!
maybe I should write my Papi comment now, before he hits
liz being wang
"This offense will have trouble scoring runs." --the thousands of Red Sox fans whose memories only last 24 hours, a week ago.
hit ground before foot?
Kim keeps thinking they're calling this pitcher Fat Albert
Sox have definitely been clicking all around the last week or so. I'm loving it.
I said the other day that I love facing the Orioles at Fenway. Still do.
Jere: I thought Don did, too.
This is only exciting for me, but, I see Kapstein! Finally!
Youk special: Working an 0-2 into a walk.
Will it happen?
BYAH
Hahahaha. Awesome!
I'm cool with that.
Careful Red Sox, you just might learn something.
HEY! HEY! HEY!
man, carter not looking good. maybe he'll get a post-career makeover like the peanut man.
na na na, gonna have a good time! 11-1!
Still only 2 outs! Me likey.
least he didn't K... sac'll beat that furshure.
I like baseball again. Thanks, Baltimore.

Jere, L and I can't stop laughing. Tears!

Was Don actually laughing on that call, or coughing?
lolz
I'm laughing so hard I missed the doctoringle.
This is an awesome inning.
And hey, Gil Velazquez.
go tek go
MAKE TITO APOLOGIZE
tek with 66.6% of the inning's outs.
That was... expectable.
Heyba Mabatt Albabers
Nothing worse than making two outs in an inning. Garko did it in that crazy 14 run Indians innings.
I doubt anyone's ever made all three.
Sox are hitting a respectable .417 today.
James, it happened in an independent minor league game I was at in 2003. The North Shore Spirit scored 15 (?) runs in one inning against the New Jersey Jackals, and Brian Caruso made all 3 outs, striking out each time. They gave him a plaque to commemorate the occasion lol
Brian Caruso made all 3 outs, striking out each time.
WOW. That sucks lol
varitek with the reach around!
What's the most number of batters to go up in one inning? It's possible someone made all 3 outs. Although unlikely.
Good job Joe Grav!
That's really awesome.
Really starting to look forward to that Taco Bell right about now... I haven't eaten yet today.
that poor guy, 3 Ks in one inning! that's crazy.
Here we go, Don and Jerry are losing it, Don starting to squeak
what'd that guy do?
The most runs scored in any inning of an MLB game was 18. So I guess it's impossible to have had more than 24 batters (it was somewhere between 21 and 24 inclusive). That's MLB though.
