Yankees - 000 200 200 00 - 4 13 1 Red Sox - 100 001 002 01 - 5 14 0After Jason Bay tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run bomb to center off Mariano Rivera, Kevin Youkilis won it with a dong to left off Damaso Marte.
The first half of the game was highly frustrating, as the Red Sox hit into four double plays in the first five innings. But things clicked in the sixth, as Mike Lowell doubled and Jason Varitek and Nick Green followed with singles, tying the game at 2-2.
Hideki Okajima relieved Lester (6-7-2-3-7, 114) in the seventh and faced four batters. They all reached safely, but only two of them scored, thanks to Manny Delcarmen's arm (3 outs on 8 pitches) and Bay's diving catch of Robinson Cano's liner to left center.
After Jonathan Albaladejo plunked Green with two down in the eighth and threw a called strike to Jacoby Ellsbury, Joe Girardi called on Rivera. Panic move? Maybe. Lyndon singled, but Dustin Pedroia was caught looking.
Javier Lopez loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with no outs on an HBP and two walks. But he toughened, getting Cano to hit into a 4-2-3 double play with the infield in and retiring Melky Cabrera on a foul pop to Tek.
Rivera struck out Ortiz to begin the bottom of the ninth. Youkilis lined a single right back through the box and took second on J.D. Drew's slow grounder to second. Then Bay came up, looked at a ball, and crushed a home run into the left-center end of the Monster seats. Tie game, 4-4. Lowell singled, but Varitek fanned. Rivera ended up throwing 30 pitches.
Mark Teixeira stranded runners at second and third in the tenth and Milk Dud GIDP'd to end the eleventh. After Ortiz struck out against Marte, Yook hit a no-doubt shot on a 2-1 pitch to left field and the first walk-off of 2009 was in the books.

Joba Chamberlain (5.06, 97 ERA+) / Jon Lester (5.50, 95 ERA+)
The Herald's Sean McAdam thinks "it might be too soon to expect the requisite high drama this weekend".
Over at the Post, Mike Vaccaro counters with: "Not to worry. There is Joba."
Referring to the four times Chamberlain has pitched up near the head of Kevin Youkilis in the last two seasons, Terry Francona notes that "he has great command until Youk gets in there". David Ortiz says "the next step for [Joba] will be to earn respect from everyone in the league so people don't get the wrong idea about him".
Over at SoSH, ToeKneeArmAss posted this:
Both teams come into the series on hot streaks. The Red Sox are led by Youkilis: .429/.522/.750; 14 runs scored, six doubles, four homers, 12 RBIs. ... Ortiz: "He gets up in the morning and he's already got a hit."
Roger Rubin, Daily News:
The Yankees have won six of their last eight games, while Boston has won seven in a row to go from the AL East basement to within striking distance of first-place Toronto. Both teams enter the weekend series at 9-6 [2 GB the 12-5 Blue Jays]. ...Since a 12-inning loss to Oakland on April 14, the Red Sox have not lost. In their last four games, the Red Sox have outscored their opponents 31-6. Here are some numbers on the two halves of the young season:
On the current streak, their primary method has been beating foes into submission - Boston leads the AL in team batting average (.320), on-base percentage (.409), slugging (.580) and runs per game (7.86) over the last week. ...
Pedroia is hitting .458 over the last six games, while Ortiz has five hits in the last three games ...
REC RS AVG OBP SLG RA ERA

7-0 55 .320 .409 .580 20 2.66
What, Ortiz Worry?People panic too easy here. I've been here seven years, man, and the years that we struggle the most, we win the World Series. Sometimes, I guess, panicking, that's what makes the game interesting. Sometimes, that gets the game all (messed) up too. I don't know, I love it. It's good with me. I've been dealing with it for years, so I know how it goes.***
When he was 13 years old, Arthur Giddon was a batboy for the Boston Braves. That was in 1922. For his 100th birthday, he'll be working at the city's other ball park, serving as the Red Sox's batboy during batting practice.
The Red Sox have sent Chris Carter back to Pawtucket and are expected to call up Jonathan Van Every before tonight's game. ... Boston has also reacquired Kason Gabbard from the Rangers. ... In his first start since injuring his hamstring, Clay Buchholz pitched five innings against Rochester, allowing three hits, two walks and two runs.

ransom's double looks like the only one.
anything they actually get their bats on = out.
I'm going to enjoy the walk-off in maybe 45 minutes.
There's one.
DP PLEASE
YES.
millions of dead canos.
Benjamin, that is just proof that baseball rules are far more complicated than most statutes. I'd rather parse the tax code than the baseball rules!

Naww, at least baseball rules are interesting! haha
I love this game, I really do. I'd do anything to have a career as a baseball statistician. I'll have a math degree from Boston College next year... any takers out there?!
Well that was certainly a hell of a play...
Great catch! Too bad Damon scored.
ok, minimize the damage and get out of there.
"I'd rather parse the tax code than the baseball rules!"
Have fun!
Grant, I agree about a career in baseball. Although I'm leaning more towards media. Writing, broadcasting, or even photography.
Meanwhile I noticed ESPN Classic is playing Game 6 of the '75 World Series.
NOW RUNS YOU ASSHOLES
OK RUNS. we can do this!
Well that was just about as good as we could have hoped for I think.
MDC stops the bleeding.
NOW BREAK THIS GAME OPEN.
Considering the circumstances (BL, 0 out) I'll consider that a great performance.
flo
yook
werd
bay ...
Have fun!
Just awful. Worst post in the history of JoS.
(I jest, of course :-P)
Kevin, I'd rather do the Copyright Act.
I'd like a donut.
Albadalbadobodoofus or something pitching.
Son of a mother...
Why pop up the first damn pitch? At least make the guy work a bit.
Saito up.
saito up too
Youk's gonna alol here. He's either going to walk or get 2+ bases.
Albadalbadobodoofus or something pitching. • Meant in the bullpen. Or somewhere.
Landsdowne St. is that way Yook.
Youk's gonna alol here. He's either going to walk or get 2+ bases.
Nope.
Two away already.
Yook forgot to calibrate his TomTom. Thinks Landsdowne is in CF.
Grant, you can definitely have a career as a baseball stat guy. Just expect to earn your living through another means.
That's what many of us do to do what we love.
don: "let me tell you phil coke's life story"
Grant, you can definitely have a career as a baseball stat guy. Just expect to earn your living through another means.
I could always just be an actuary and start out making 70k a year :-P
thunder --- thunder --- thunder ---
That is one long last name. Imagine what first grade must have been like for him.
Grant, you can definitely have a career as a baseball stat guy. Just expect to earn your living through another means.Baseball betting FTW.
I like this scenario...
Dong would be coo' here...
GDGD Sez:
Alba's out pitch: slider
Bay loves to face: slider
Albaladejo (pronounced "I'm-A-Pendejo")
GDGD Sez:
I actually can't get it to load...
Albaladodobajojoyoyo gonna get rocked by our mojo.
Amazing that Joba commits a balk to put a guy on 2nd, then a wild pitch scores him -- and the run is unearned.
Jacking one here would be nice.
Albaladejo (pronounced "I'm-A-Pendejo")
Yikes... lol
So much for the mojo.
Can only rise from here, right?
SON OF A MOTHERRRRRRRRR
At least that had some pop to it.
But useless nonetheless.
This game is so terrible, I think it gave me cancer.
Well, that was disappointing.
Saito in
Got to go put a box together. Be back soon.
Game's not over yet. Keep the chemo on hold.
Green's got a heck of an arm, eh?
"I could always just be an actuary and start out making 70k a year"
Yeah. Sounds exciting.
Yeah. Sounds exciting.
The money sure does :-P
Maybe A-Rod can give Ortiz his cousins number?
If you say so.
Why must our pitchers take the easiest opposing outs and put them on base with the walk?
It's a sad day when you can't keep Cody Ransom off the bases.
Have the Sox walked off yet this year?
Pedroia is SO GOOD.
FY!
RANGE!
cody got a boo-boo
I HATE how I can't get GDGD up...
Bring on the 3rd string 3B.
I always have GDGD up when I watch games, I feel like I'm missing so much without looking at all the stats.
Seriously, I feel so lost right now.
Sit.
that could be a serious lobotomy for the mfy
please note nyy lob
SCORE SOME RUNS
grant, you sound like allan complaining about that
he also needs the game, gameday and thread all going at the same time. among other things.
i stand by my prediction, btw. we are coming back to win.
SCORE (MOTHERFUCKING COCKSUCKING GODDAMED KARATE PENIS KICKING SHITSTORMING BITCHSLAPPING) RUNS!
My father and I have taken to calling Nick Green "Who?" as in "Coming up this inning, Lowell, Varitek, and Who."
We call Gil Velazquez "Who2", by the way. xD
classic nix
Ok, I am back. Home Depot makes the stupidest boxes. It was like a Rubik's Cube to put it together.
And now we MUST score runs.
he also needs the game, gameday and thread all going at the same time
Baseball is definitely one of those things that are 100x better when being watched with other people (regardless of cyber-distance)
sit down, lopez....
Terrible call.
mike not enamored with the call
Not a strike.
Nix back to usual form. Not laughing any more.
My ideal Red Sox viewing experience is NESN on mute, radio on, thread on.
GIDP... oh wait...
So apparently the amoeba strike zone has returned...
dear sox: don't make sterling shake
"the amoeba strike zone"
as opposed to amica.
This is lame. I'm just not feeling this one you guys...
THEY HIT WHO!
Ow... that sounded like it hit something important.
LIFE!
Not the way I wanted to get a baserunner. But I will take it.
Cmon J. Kobe...
MFYs unintentionally hitting a lot of Sox tonight with their shitty pitching.
Why can't we hit their shitty pitching?
No GiDP for LBJ this time, except in Grant's World.
Pls Lyndon! Do something good,.
TAKE ADVANTAGE FOR ONCE!!!
Weird move by Joe.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Fruitbat time mid-AB.

No GiDP for LBJ this time, except in Grant's World.
Hahah :-P
Actually not possible here... So that's cool.
strap it on, lyndon.
it's go time.
Girardi showing off his Caveman managing approach.
Any chance that he gets shitty waiting while they bat in the top half?
Kathryn Tappen that...
Liner off the Monsta.
Lina*
Bat has blown 1 of every 5 save chances against us.
44 saves, 11 blown
(plus the playoffs!!!)
Ellsbury still the responsibility of that other guy
I believe even if Mo gives up a JACK here it is not a BS.
HAHAHAHAHAHHA
Now do it, FY.
CI got sliced by that one!
King of the PopUps, my ass
COME ON NOW FY!
MISP

The BABIP gods owe us big.
Jeter's a sieve.
Holy crap, we have the start of a rally.
Now continue it.
Sadly, it's now possible for a DP :-P
Harv questioning Girardi's move here.
Just getting one here would be big. Cmon sox...
"strap it on, lyndon."
Why do people say this about men? Doesn't Lyndon already have one? Why would he need to strap one on?
Come on, little man. Show them your dong.
Tell Harv Joe is panicking.
Way to stay alive...
WHAT THE FLYING FUCKERFUCK?!
bah
shit - nice pitch
That did not look like a strike to me.
Nor to FY.
I bet you we have a new 2B...
I'm sorry, that's just not a strike. Wasn't to Lowell either.
BULLSHIT CALL
Oh hey, look that wasn't a strike either.
well, gdgd has that a bit too far inside. like f-bat needs help.
Oh great, White Flag 2.0
Really?
Tok McSutgan would say that's a Mariano Rivera strike.
What that wasn't a strike?
I hope that was intentional...but I know it wasn't.
And of course Tok McSutgan would be the trio of McCarver, Morgan and Sutcliffe combined.
a menage a dong from flo, yook and drew would be oh so sweet.
i hate lopez
Menage a dong?
Well done, sir.
Why is Lopez in? Was he really the safest choice to keep this game close? Or has Tito written off the game?
Does feel like a Timlin move...
Garbaggggge time here with lopez,
anybody > javier lopez
I almost miss Craig Hansen...
I hate conceding games before they're even over. (Of course it wouldn't be conceding, otherwise.)
Especially a close game. I don't get it.
This count was 0-2...
can tek work his intangible magic with this rag arm?
hunter jones up -- good.
Hunter Jones warming.
$#%^$&%^%$%^#%$$^@$RTY^%YRGGYU#$TGRGSTHEY$U^
Guess I'll go do the dishes. Not like this inning will end by the time I'm done.
They had better do better tomorrow, or I am in for a long game with my brother's rabid Yankee fan friend.
Why is this guy still there? Did Terry just leave the game and go into the clubhouse?
Love it. <3
Though that helps.
eat shit cano
Well done! So far anyways.
A nice DP. Good move, FY.
wow! beautiful!
Edit: I DO miss Craig Hansen.
That was Venti.
I have a Craig Hansen T-Shirt. It's true.
Okay, maybe I don't.
I swear to God...
nice save tek!
OH MY CHRIST COME THE FUCK ON
Painful to watch.
Those would have been strikes for Fruitbat.

Weathered the Lopez Storm... Somehow. We'll see who's got a woody. It takes two.
ESCAPE!
2 runs = mere bag of shells
I will say it one last time---SCORE.
THREE RUNS would be just perfect.
Alright Papi, how about a return to form NOW.
I'm feeling a Sox tease. We're going to get 1 run. I don't know why I'm feeling so pessimistic.
RRRRRUUUUNNNNSSSSS PLS
Me:
I'm going to enjoy the walk-off in maybe 45 minutes.
Fri Apr 24, 09:44:00 PM
I knew I should have said an hour. It's been 59 minutes so far.
Grant, are you in or approaching exam time? Maybe that's why you are feeling so stressed?
Time for Papi to show his muscle.
Grant, are you in or approaching exam time? Maybe that's why you are feeling so stressed?

Time for Papi to show his muscle. • The special muscle.
