Red Sox Unable To Reach Deal On Contract Extension With Gonzalez

UPDATE, 7:55 PM:
DEAL!

Ken Rosenthal says the same thing and adds:

So: do the deal and hope something can get hammered out next season?

I'm very curious what the sticking point was: did Theo wanted to avoid the luxury tax hit, was AG holding firm on a Teixesque 8/180 contract, was Boston resistant to go higher than something like 6/110-120, or what? (Gotta believe Theo knew he'd have to pay at least 20 per, though ...)

Start the "you can buy a soccer team, but not afford the player you've openly wanted for years" backlash

Rudy Pemberton
Phew, dodged a bullet there. Nearly risked overpaying a really, really good fucking baseball player. Teixeira, Gonzalez, perhaps the Sox can fuck up landing Pujols next year?

How can this not get done? He wants money, you have some. Give it to him.

ROSENTHAL:
Source: Window is closed for Red Sox to negotiate extension with AGon. Teams can still negotiate trade. This is far from over.

allan said...

Rosenthal: "Red Sox can make trade and keep talking to AGon, presuming they are confident of deal. Hard to give up this much for 1-yr guy."

allan said...

Added "On Contract Extension" to post title, for accuracy.

Boggs, AG's agent: "All I can say is, it was very disappointing it could not work out. We're very busy at this point."

Some Fox Sports dude: "Source says better than 50/50 chance Gonzalez doesn't end up w Red Sox. ... Gonzalez "turned down a lot of money because he wanted more, and the window closed."

I am sorely disappointed. Not that I want the Sox to become the Yanks and throw ridiculous amounts of cash at any one player but this guy has to be the one exception out there.

All I can say now: yuck.

UPDATE: As of 3:30, a range of reports had emerged, with Jon Heyman of SI.com saying the trade is off. But nothing has been confirmed, leaving things in limbo for now. Rest assured, we're on the case.

Don't let a few luxury tax bucks sink this deal. He wants 8, Theo likes 6 -- say 7 and pop the fuckin cork.

I did kinda like this Rosenthal tweet:

"If indeed Gonzo talks are dead, blow to #Cardinals in quest to keep Pujols. Gonzo in Bos would have left #RedSox, #Yankees set at 1B. #MLB"

I would love love love to see Pujols in a Sox uni.

Jayson Werth heading to Nationals per MLB Network

allan said...

If an extension is not done and this blows up in Theo's face, we could see AG, Fielder, and Pujols all on the market next winter!

matthew said...

Werth to Nats. Let's bring in Crawford.

If AG falls through, do you think Beltre's back for 1 year?

allan said...

And now Werth signs with the Natinals. 7 years. Fuckin A.

allan said...

Beltre wants to come back, but he's gotta want more years than 1.

matthew said...

Re: Beltre wanting more than 1 year.

Exactly. But with AG & Pujols available next year, would the Sox really give Beltre more than 1? Would they do that and try to trade him next off-season?

allan said...

Werth: 7/126

AG ain't takin' 6 yrs now. He must believe his shoulder is solid to not commit.

allan said...

A's say they are out on Beltre. (He's shot them down twice in two years.)

allan said...

Orioles talking to Beltre.

Olney says Sox initial offer was $120 million which was $60 million less than what Gonzalez opened with.

sounds like it could have been 6/120 vs 8/180.

Total shit show.

It just kills me to see them lose this guy [and others, in the past] over say 30 mil over 6 years; that's 5 mil per year; they are going to throw 5 mil per year away on all sorts of crap and mistakes over the next 6 years [eg Lugo, Renteria, etc etc]. Why the fuck not spend the goddam money on a guy who is as close as can be to a surefire monster?

Rob said...

Baffling. They have all this money yet here they are, making a big deal about principles. Seems ironic to me.

allan said...

Edes: "... no one on Yawkey Way says deal is dead ... have every reason to believe Sox still talking with Gonzalez"

matthew said...

Yeah, Heyman is backtracking big time now. He's saying the Sox are still talking to AG & a deal is still possible.

Rob said...

I read a tweet that said they agreed to 7/161 but the person who wrote it was not someone I've ever heard of.

Rob said...

I am not believing that at all, for the record.

allan said...

Saw that at SoSH too. I think a hit has been placed on the poster.

allan said...

ESPN's Jorge Arangure: "Was just told by a source close to Adrian Gonzalez that he's still in Boston tonight in case a deal gets done"

This contradicts an earlier report that said AG was flying back to SD.

Rob said...

Now Heyman says BING! Deal has been reached.

Rob said...

Heyman:

"Deal is done. A gon headed to #redsox. Press conf expected tomorrow"

The way this is going I'm still not convinced yet until it sounds more official. Or, of course, wait until the press conference.

allan said...

YES!

allan said...

But

Is there an extension or is this confirmation of the trade?

allan said...

Heyman: "working on details"

allan said...

Maybe that 7/161 figure was right?

allan said...

Press conference tomorrow.

Sounds like an extension!

Rob said...

Interesting.

Joel Sherman: "Press conference for Gonzo from #Padres to #Redsox expected tomorrow. Will be prospects for Gonzo, but no extension -- for now"

allan said...

SoSHer Andrew: "This deal was guaranteed to get done as soon as Nick Cafardo called the Red Sox an 'embarrassing joke' in a blog post. What's that? The post is no longer on Boston.com - Extra Bases? Shocker."

allan said...

sherman: "MLB never gave additional time beyond 2 p.m. So there was no new contract talks for Gonzalez with #RedSox"

---

maybe the propects were changed if it was a trade only?

allan said...

ISH:

Heyman tweets what turns out to be about a 7/161 deal!

allan said...

prospects the same, as per heyman

Rob said...

The Red Sox are sneaky sneaky. If the Red Sox wait until after opening day to announce an extension, they avoid luxury tax. (info from several reporters)

Rob said...

LOL! That's hilarious. The person on Twitter who wrote 7/161 didn't appear to have any credentials at all, and was only identified as "GGG"

Rob said...

I wonder if I could get that guy to pick my lottery numbers.

FenFan said...

Geez, leave my computer for two hours and everything changes... at least for the better this time!

YES!
