G139: Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 3

Coco Crisp beat out a possible fourth inning-ending double play grounder, which enabled JD Drew, who had started the inning with a walk, to score the game's first run.

Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a two-run homer into the Boston bullpen (he also singled, stole a base and tripled, but, with a chance for the cycle, was left in the on-deck circle in the eighth). Julio Lugo and Dustin Pedroia both doubled and the Red Sox led 4-0.

Toronto answered in the top of the fifth. Aaron Hill singled and, with one out, John McDonald walked. After Vernon Wells fouled out, Matt Stairs cracked a three-run home run to right and the lead was down to 4-3.

Frank Thomas singled to start the Blue Jays sixth, but he was the last Toronto base runner of the night. (He was erased on a double play.) Kevin Youkilis's solo shot to dead center in the eighth was a little insurance.

Beckett was at 84 pitches through five innings -- and it was questionable as to whether Jeemer and Bot were available tonight. But Beckett got the Jays on 13 pitches in the sixth (97), 10 in the seventh (107), and 10 in the eighth (117). Papelbon pitched the ninth -- retiring the Jays in order on nine pitches (F9, 4-3, K looking).

Both starters faced more than 30 batters and threw more 117 pitches (I don't think the Sox have been involved in such a game this year):
IP H R ER BB K BF PIT
Beckett 8 5 3 3 2 7 30 117 W 17-6
Halladay 8 9 5 5 2 7 35 126 L 14-7
In the Bronx, a seven-run seventh helped the Yankees beat Seattle 12-3. Boston stays 7 GA in the East, while in the wild card, New York is 2 GA of Seattle and 3.5 GA of Detroit.

***

Roy Halladay (3.87, 120 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.29, 138 ERA+)

Dr. Doubles versus Doc: 7-for-16, 3 HR, 9 RBI, .353/.389/.882/1.271.

That's the best slugging percentage and OPS of any Red Sox batter against Halladay. Ortiz is 21-for-69, 5 HR, .304/.342/.609/.951. ... Here are the Blue Jays stats against Beckett.

Also at 7 PM: Mariners at Yankees (7 GB).

According to WEEI Sox starting line up is:

Lugo
Pedroia
Ortiz
Lowell
Drew
Youkilis
Varitek
Crisp
Ellsbury

Stefan said...

Why move Ellsbury to 9th?

redsock said...

Because Halladay is pitching and Tito wants more experienced batters up top?

If so, then I'd like Fuck Yeah and Yook at 1-2.

No more Lugo at #1 pls.

Off to Jonah's soccer practice in a few minutes, so I will be joining you all later in the thread.

Here is a link to the picture s1c took of Lester warming before the game. Jonah and I are visible behind the fence above the Sox dugout. Pretty funny (too me at least).

Also, here are the pictures I took at the game. Nothing too spectacular, but I did get a picture of Coco making the spectacular sliding catch late in the game. It's a little blurry because I was using a zoom lens, but not too bad.

s1c said...

Sometimes I really think that Francona doesn't care about winning the division.

Between the two of us we got the catch from the back and from the side!!

Jere said...

"And Clay Buchholz was named the American League Player of the Week! "

And according to ESPN, won't start for the rest of the season.

s1c said...

The Herald Insider is reporting that Clay will be used from the bull pen in structured outings. Francona and Theo are worried about his innings, another start is not ruled out but look for him to come in when the Sox are way ahead or way behind (at least that is what I am assuming).

nixon33 said...

get to randi johnson's look-a-like early, before he settles down!

redsock said...

Sometimes I really think that Francona doesn't care about winning the division.

I can't tell if you are serious.

L-girl said...

Are you kidding? (Maybe you are. I can never tell sarcasm online!) We've been in first place for practically the entire season, we've had the best record in baseball for most of it. And Terry Francona doesn't want to get his Red Sox to the AL East title, the first time in more than a decade Joe Torre's Yankees haven't won it? He wouldn't be human. He wouldn't be a professional athlete. He must want it even more than we do.

Or maybe you weren't being serious, in which case: never mind. :)

s1c said...

Of course I wasn't being serious.

redsock said...

matt stairs hitting .591 in last 10 games!

redsock said...

rance: "stairs is a *very* good fastball hitter."

2 seconds later ...

beckett smokes stairs with a fastball.

redsock said...

then he calls rios a very good fb hitter. maybe he just says it about everybody.

s1c said...

Hey, just remember its a play off atmosphere, even Don says the BJ's are fighting for their play off lives.

redsock said...

Uhh no Don.

What are they -- 7.5 out of the WC?

s1c said...

actually 5.5 games out, hey, if the division is still in doubt with a 7 game lead then the WC must be in doubt with a 5.5.

thatdietcokegirl said...

who's 'fuck yeah'?? ;)

tim said...

psst, ortiz...this is where you bunt for a base hit!

tim said...

Or not.

L-girl said...

Check out Dusty's great play during the no-hitter. You can see him saying "fuck yeah!" after he makes the play. Allan has a gif of it a few posts ago.

thatdietcokegirl said...

oh, pedroia, right? nm i just figured it out ;)

thatdietcokegirl said...

hehe yup, thx l-girl. i remembered that very image and was like 'oh yeah!!' (or fuck yeah even)

L-girl said...

Of course I wasn't being serious.

So you couldn't have said that five minutes earlier? :)

Actually s1c, if I had noticed it was your comment, I would have known.

L-girl said...

To me too!! That's amazing!

Joy Nation: we are everywhere. :)

tim said...

Wow, the red sox definately love to have 3Bs that are "professional hitters" - mueller, and now lowell.

Jere said...

Did DO say FY's had at least two hits in each of his last four games? And on pace tonight. FY is ROY.

redsock said...

Joy Nation: we are everywhere. :)

We snap up so much internet bandwidth that hard-working fans of other teams are unable to get online and blog about their own teams. [/caple]

s1c said...

your this date in 1978 standings -

On this date in 78 the Sox had a 85 - 51 record, 5 games ahead of the Yankees. After losing a game to the Orioles. (eckersley took the loss).

Jere said...

The Lip goes down swinging.

Jere said...

Lugo doing his usual.

L-girl said...

What, beating out an infield hit?

s1c said...

We snap up so much internet bandwidth that hard-working fans of other teams are unable to get online and blog about their own teams.

Of course that is OK since we are also preoccupied with MFY.

Lugo's defense is my only major worry about the Sox defensive abilities.

Jere said...

Did you know there's a site that's reliving the '67 season, through the eyes of each of the contending teams? (Way more appropriate than '78, s1c, ha--since they're both 7 years and both years where we win division/league)

L-girl said...

If we only have one defensive worry, that's pretty great IMO.

Jere said...

"Of course that is OK since we are also preoccupied with MFY."

Yeah, we're more concerned with them then we are our own team--yet we think we're the "center of the universe." Which is it, stupid newspaper writers?

Jere said...

Lugo's brain is my only concern about the mental bandwidth of the Sox. Or whatever. Hey, L, if you'll wonder if I'm at the game tomorrow, I will be!

L-girl said...

Which is it, stupid newspaper writers?

Don't ask them such difficult questions! Their little heads will explode.

redsock said...

Yes, why just today, I went to a several Yankees blogs to tell Yankees fans in very direct terms that I do not think about the Yankees at all. In fact, I also lectured them on how to be a real Yankee fan. Not that I give the Yankees a first or second thought, of course.

redsock said...

drew doing his usual.

s1c said...

OMG - Drew swung at the first pitch!

L-girl said...

Hey, L, if you'll wonder if I'm at the game tomorrow, I will be!

Thanks! I like to know these things in advance. :)

Tomorrow night I'll be with the war resisters. A long, slow game would be helpful so I could see a few innings when I get home.

L-girl said...

do not adjust your sets... that's j.d. drew on base. what to complain about now???

Jere said...

I got that! But I just meant that with Lugo, his "usual" is to somehow look awkward or whatever. Which sometimes manifests itself as errors. Which I think of as happening all the time.

redsock said...

rance: "i don't think a hitter can take the exact same approach to every single pitcher every single day."

oh rilly?

L-girl said...

he's definitely a weak link defensively. i don't think he's quite as bad as you seem to think he is. but no matter.

redsock said...

so how much is remy selling his buchholz scorecards for? maybe i'll sell copies of mine for half that.

s1c said...

Dale and Holley had a discussion about Drew on WEEI.

Dale's feeling is that Drew is the most frustrating player he has ever seen as a Sox fan.

At least they have quit playing the whiner line calls complaining about him K'ing.

s1c said...

he's definitely a weak link defensively. i don't think he's quite as bad as you seem to think he is. but no matter.

He gets to a lot of balls, but my worry is that sometimes in a high pressure situation he lets the ball play him instead of playing the ball. That can be a killer in the play offs.

so how much is remy selling his buchholz scorecards for? maybe i'll sell copies of mine for half that.

I haven't heard him say yet. Will yours be autographed though like his will be?

redsock said...

actually, the weei morans must secretly love drew -- he's giving them hours and hours of material.

L-girl said...

The doctor is operating!

redsock said...

sure, signed with a smiley face. or a crude picture of a dog. whatever.

L-girl said...

I'm not so sure it's a secret. I always hear the glee coming off those guys' hatred. Not EEI guys specifically, just the mediots in general.

L-girl said...

I was saying this the other day about Michael Kay, that he must be loooving this NYY season - so much fodder for his radio show (which, as you know, I hate).

redsock said...

without drew or lugo, they might have to talk about how fucking great this season has been.

s1c said...

Why isn't Tek aguing that Wells interfered. He leaned out over the plate on that pitch.

s1c said...

without drew or lugo, they might have to talk about how fucking great this season has been.

Actually I don't ever hear alot of negativity about Lugo. Drew on the other hand is every day.

Of course since LBJ has joined the club, the bashing is a reason to say that he should be playing instead of Drew.

L-girl said...

There was plenty of negativity about Lugo earlier this season...

But yeah, I'm sure the LBJ call-up must fuel the anti-Werd crowd.

redsock said...

after 2 innings:

team we can't stop thinking about 1, mariners 0

L-girl said...

That's my boy!

tim said...

Is it just me or does Gregg Zaun look like a poster child for quitting smoking? Or possibly a homeless bum?

L-girl said...

I call Zaun The Rodent.

Zenslinger said...

I'm sure he looked good doing it, L-Girl.

I'm Gamedayin' it myself.

L-girl said...

I'm Gamedayin' it myself.

That sucks. I do that on the weekends.

s1c said...

So, I go upstairs to get something to drink and got to hear one of the funniest lines in a movie in a long time.

"Been almost a year now and I ain't had nothing betwix my nethers that weren't run on batteries."

MFY 1-0 top of the fourth.

L-girl said...

What movie is that?

Zenslinger said...

On Gameday, ball four to Ortiz looked like it was heading for Yawkey Way.

redsock said...

after 3-0, ball 4 was intentional. is that what you mean? gameday should say that on the pbp view.

s1c said...

The movie is Serenity, based on the short lived Joss Whedon series Firefly. Was said by the mechanic of the ship.

Amy said...

Who is LBJ? I cannot find it in the glossary. (Yes, I know who the real LBJ was. I even remember when he was president.)

L-girl said...

Huh, the quote out of context sounded like it had to be from a woman. What with the batteries and all.

redsock said...

rance says the diff between josh's road and home ERAs (road is 2 runs per 9 lower) is probably "due to the short porch in left field at fenway".

L-girl said...

Amy, it's a brand-new nickname, sorry for the confusion. I have, well, a crush on Ellsbury. I was calling him My Boy. Which caused Allan to call him Laura's Boy. Hence: Laura's Boy Jacoby. LBJ.

Last night Kennedy was pitching to LBJ...

s1c said...

The mechanic is a woman, this is Joss we are talking about, super strong women characters. The bad mf in the series and the movie is the a woman, and in the movie the one you don't want to mess with is a woman.

Beckett is looking pretty good tonight.

Amy said...

Thanks, L-girl. I kept looking for which player had a hangdog face and a Texas drawl!

L-girl said...

Whoa, zap me with my own sexism gun! I saw mechanic and thought man. MY BAD.

L-girl said...

Sounds cool, I don't know the series or movie at all. And I have known both men and women named Joss. (She says in her own lame defense.)

L-girl said...

I kept looking for which player had a hangdog face and a Texas drawl!

LOL!

Amy said...

Drew...could it be 2 for 2? No, but I will take a BB. At least he is on base!

s1c said...

Its a great movie, kind of a space cowboy type of thing. Though seeing the series would help, it is pretty much a stand alone.

Of course I blame B-Fly and BH for the series being canceled, since they wouldn't watch it when it was on Fox (the only Whedon show they didn't watch).

I got the dvd's of the show as a b-day or christmas or anniversary gift and they got hooked onthe show and the movie.

1-0 in dah Bronx, top of 5th.

redsock said...

mccarver says leadoff walks "always" score, so we'll be up 1-0 soon.

redsock said...

JD is 2-2 in OBP.

L-girl said...

Of course I blame B-Fly and BH for the series being canceled,

Seems a bit harsh :)

ish said...

RS, I've been out in the living room scoring this game, trying to keep track of each pitch...

I don't know how you can do it and keep up with the game thread. I'm having a hard enough time leaving the table for even a second. I guess having more space in here at the computer would be necessary. Oi.

s1c said...

Another thing Drew brings, 1st to 3rd. He does that a lot.

As for blaming them for the cancellation, well, there are so few things that I can blame them for, so I abuse the ones that I can.

c'mon Tek, lets get a run here.

redsock said...

without a thread, there is plenty of time btw pitches.

now, i sometimes miss a pitch or two if i am typing (like now, tek just fouled off a pitch to right), but i also have gameday open to get caught up.

Tek - SASAHA

Amy, you sure you don't work for WEEI?

j/k.

Amy said...

OK, here come the bats with 2 outs. Lugo is coming along.

s1c said...

ROY gets another run!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

FUCK YEAH!

L-girl said...

lyndong - !!

i direct this to the women present (and any interested men, of course)... do you remember johnny damon (spit!) as a royal or an A? he was amazingly good looking. to me ellsbury looks like an improved johnny damon from those days, similar look, but even hotter.

plus he's going to be a great player. uh, that too.

Amy said...

I love these guys in their 20s! They make me happy for today, happy for the future. Go, Dustin!

nixon33 said...

I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW GOOD THE KIDS ARE!!!!!

L-girl said...

It's so exciting to have so many really good young players coming up. Damn, one of them just threw a no-hitter!

Amy said...

I don't even LISTEN to EEI or any of those sports radio doomsdayers. I just am impatient with Drew and would rather see Ellsbury out there when Manny returns.

redsock said...

rance channels his inner mcmoron by saying "of course this inning all goes back to that leadoff walk to jd drew."

redsock said...

could seattle hit a few dongs off wang?

L-girl said...

I pay absolutely no attention to the sports media. It's totally unnecessary to the enjoyment and understanding of the game. In fact, it generally has the opposite result.

redsock said...

buffy calling lyndon "else berry"

s1c said...

Last 5 starts at Fenway Doc is 1-2 with a 6.92 ERA, wow!

L-girl, if you like series with enteraining characters that are both serious and funny, Firefly DVD (like 14 shows) and Serenity DVD would be the best sixty bucks you ever spent.

B-fly makes all of her boyfriends watch theem. She also has like six shirts with various quotes from the show.

1-0 in the bronx after 5.

Amy said...

could seattle hit a few dongs off wang?

That sure sounds dirty to me...

Unitsmoke said...

Long time reader, short time writer. Who is LBJ going to replace in the lineup when Manny gets back?

redsock said...

rance talks about coco beating out the force play and actually says "tie goes to the runner".

go rance go!!! you'll get mentioned on FJM soon enough.

L-girl said...

Unitsmoke, love the blog!!

redsock said...

Who is LBJ going to replace in the lineup when Manny gets back?

No one, but he'll get time giving various starters a day off, as we'll be 8-10 GA.

Then he'll be a PR in the playoffs.

s1c said...

Then he'll be a PR in the playoffs.

Defensive replacement for Manny also.

Mike L said...

M's-2 on, 1 out in NY. Gotta score...

...then again, same thing at Fenway

s1c said...

Riveting conversation on YES. Is Ichirio a HOFer? Gee, Michael since he averages 231 hits per year, do you think?

nixon33 said...

fucking wang is dealing....

L-girl said...

m's will have to wait for the pen

L-girl said...

fucking canadian!

Amy said...

DAMN, I am not liking Stairs at all.

redsock said...

Ichiro has no rings, unlike Broisus, so no.

... fucking stairs

s1c said...

I am starting to hate fragging Matt Stairs.

Amy said...

Reading Beckett's lips..."damn it." At least not unpublishable like his comments to Joba.

nixon33 said...

m's will have to wait for the pen

for joba and rivera?

getting a bit nervous here with leadoff hit. Come on, Beckett. We have only a one run lead.

nixon33 said...

settle down beckett!

Unitsmoke said...

Speaking of Beckett and the MFY:

1) Does he pitch in the next Yanks series at Fenway? (14th to the 16th)
2) Who does he plunk for Youk?

He was pretty fired up in the dugout...

nixon33 said...

3-0 yanks.....fuck

Amy said...

Nicely executed DP, Youk.

Mike L said...

nice! Big K/DP to snuff that out. Also might have bought himself another inning...

thatdietcokegirl said...

CANO. plunk cano. no posada.

s1c said...

1 run lead is worrisome, especially, if Remy is correct and there will not be any Oki or Bot tonight.

Hey, Remy is giving away ten more cards of Lowe and Buccholz.

That dp is why Lugo is my only worry about the defense. Youkilis- Solid, D-ped - a Fuck Yeah, Lowell- Mr. Professional.

ish said...

Could also plunk Jeter. He won't charge the mound. (Unless Beckett wants a fight, Jeter would be best, I think.)

redsock said...

umps will likely give warnings before the series, so who know what will happen, if anything?

beckett'll have to do it with pitch #105 or something.

Mike L said...

Big Hurt could've been called for interference there too...no attempt anywhere near the bag.

redsock said...

god, tek's swings are worse than drew's clueless hacks.

redsock said...

4-0 chokers.

we hold on to win -- who cares if they get 25?

L-girl said...

LBJ's gotta go for the cycle!

Anytime anyone hits a triple, I'm thinking cycle.

s1c said...

LBJ only needs the double now.

I don't think I have ever seen a triple hit to that part of the park before.

thatdietcokegirl said...

god, is he a new star or what? ;)

L-girl said...

we all want a yankeeless october.

Mike L said...

Wow-another big night for the kid...triple, single and a dong...with an at-bat to come...

L-girl said...

a star, baby, a star!

redsock said...

apparently, lyndon could have batted 1st tonight!

ish said...

beckett'll have to do it with pitch #105 or something.

I guess the only problem with plunking is that this year, at least, it seems like if you get ejected for intentionally plunking, a suspension usually follows.

charlie pioli said...

Wasup guys, Ellsbury is the Man!!!

s1c said...

apparently, lyndon could have batted 1st tonight!

Is there any doubt where he will be batting next year?

nixon33 said...

way to go lugo.

Amy said...

Cycle...he has the triple, the HR, and a single, right?

charlie pioli said...

Things ain't going well in NY right now even though the M's finally got a run off of Wang.

ish said...

Cycle...he has the triple, the HR, and a single, right?

Yep.

L-girl said...

Amy, yes, he only needs the double. I don't think I've ever seen anyone hit for the cycle, not that I can remember.

L-girl said...

Someone did it recently but it was the one game I missed that week. Bah.

redsock said...

Someone on the A's did it against us this year, but I forget who it was.

charlie pioli said...

That dude on the Phillies did it recently. I think it was Bourne?

Amy said...

L-girl---do you mean seen live or seen even on TV? I know I have seen on TV, though don't ask me who or when.

L-girl said...

Yeah, but I don't watch the Phillies. I want to see one myself!

s1c said...

Mark ellis did it in Oakland on 6/4.

L-girl said...

Live or on TV, either. I can't remember ever having seen one.

I've never seen a no-hitter either - not a whole game, start to finish. I felt horrible that I had to miss a few innings of HH's game. (I know you missed the whole thing, boo hoo.)

Mike L said...

So what's the 8th/9th look like tonight? Timlin and someone from the pawsox pupu platter?

redsock said...

if beckett got suspended for a start, with rosters expanded, it's no big deal. we could have hansack start.

ish said...

I also think Fred Lewis of SF did it.

Charlie Poli--It wasn't Victorino on the Phillies?

L-girl said...

For me, Gameday doesn't count. I followed two Yankees perfect games on Gamecast (the old ESPN.com game thing). Very frustrating!

Amy said...

Ten pitch inning. Phew. Let's get some insurance runs.

thatdietcokegirl said...

yah i only hear of cycles on baseball tonight or sportscenter, etc. i wanna SEE one liiive ;)

L-girl said...

BBTN! :<(

I never would have guessed that would be the thing I miss most about the US!

Amy said...

My most exciting live game(i.e. at Fenway) was the Mother's Day miracle. I had a sore throat the next day from all the screaming! Most exciting game(s) on TV: got to be the ALCS in 2004. Hearing Seaver strike out 20 back in 1970 was most exciting radio game. Can't say watching on the computer generates much excitement.

s1c said...

For LBJ to get just a double he would have to hit it off the wall.

A double for anyone else would be a triple for him.

L-girl said...

Amy, how cool you were there!

I can't talk about my most exciting live games on this blog. I was at a lot of amazing playoff and WS games in the Bronx.

Mike L said...

But we don't get Don Cherry...i get very jealous during the winter...

L-girl said...

Re LBJ double, I was thinking the same thing.

redsock said...

Seaver struck out 19 -- but he struck out the last 10 Padres batters in that game.

(Billy and Kerry Wood are the only guys with 20.)

L-girl said...

Don Cherry?! Come on, don't make me miss the US. :)

s1c said...

During Sundays game, LBj hit one to the base of the wall that was caught. Wasn't a high pop up and not quite a line drive, but by the time it was caught, LBJ was like a stride from second. He has speed to spare.

Amy said...

Ahh, poor L-girl! I saw Nolan Ryan pitch at Shea a few times back in my Mets days (before we moved to Boston in 75). He was amazing. Even when he didn't have the control, his speed was just unbelievable. Watching Pedro pitch at Fenway was also incredible. I have never seen an exciting game at the OTHER NY stadium....

L-girl said...

Oh no, no sympathy needed. I had a great time, I don't regret a minute of it.

Amy said...

Seaver struck out 19 -- but he struck out the last 10 Padres batters in that game.

(Billy and Kerry Wood are the only guys with 20.)

OK, I was only a kid back then. I felt like 20! And what about Steve Carlton? Didn't he strike out 20?

s1c said...

Anybody seen any one warming up in the pen?

Oops, WF and Lopez up.

redsock said...

lyndon is due up 5th in the 8th -- better get some guys on because we don't wanna hit in the 9th.

("the omnipotent q" is the walkoff contestant.)

L-girl said...

I hate Shea Stadium. We saw Mark McGwire hit #s 49 & 50 there in 1998. That's the only good thing I remember seeing at Shea.

Allan went to see Dave Roberts there in 05.

Yes, Shea is awful. But I didn't know that then. After seeing games at Fenway and also at places like Camden Yards and PacBell in SF (which is what it was called when I was there in 2003), I realized just how bad Shea is for seeing a game.
