G140: Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 4

Troy Glaus's solo home run down the left field line off MDC in the top of the eighth erased a 4-3 Boston lead and Vernon Wells's two-run home run to center off Jeemer in the top of the ninth broke the tie.

Jason Varitek was on base four times tonight: walking in the second and fifth, hitting a two-run dong in the sixth and singling in the eighth. Crisp singled and doubled, Ortiz singled twice and walked, and Ellsbury doubled and scored a run.

***

Shaun Marcum (3.75, 124 ERA+) / Curt Schilling (4.02, 113 ERA+)

Schilling has made five starts since coming off the disabled list on August 6: 31 IP, 31 H, 2 BB, 15 K, 3.48 ERA.

Marcum has pitched at least six innings in 17 of his 21 starts this year, teaming up with AJ Burnett as Toronto's top two starters. However, Marcum's ERA in his last three outings (14 IP) is 7.71 and opponents are .393/.433/.656. (His record in those three starts is 2-1, so Joe Morgan would insist he's doing quite well.)

Seattle plays in New York at 7 PM: Washburn/Hughes.

Maybe he'll do something big now that I'm here to cheer him on.

before I even read a post screaming about no faith, I meant by Papi.

They can still have a walk off.

He looks like a guy i can really see being a big part of the team for years to come. Our CI?

Heh, I noticed that when I went to the Dice-k game in April (Toronto) - everyone else had this super technical weighted bat thingy and he was swinging what looked like a rusty ol piece of re-bar that he ripped out of some construction site.

laura k said...

s1c, we knew that :)

laura k said...

uh yeah, i meant ellsbury too

we were there too, i noticed the same thing

andy said...

Well by the comparison to jeter i mean he is gonna be the face of this team.

tim said...

oh yeah, your sunflower seed game. :)

That was may...april was my 7 rows behind the plate sitting next to all the scouts getting their first glimpse at dice-k.

Well that was certainly more productive than bunting down the 3b line (rolls eyes)

andy said...

Sac bunt?

Cool :)

We were at all those games except for when our pup was sick. She's doing great now, so we'll have no problem for the Sept games.

You?

andy said...

fuck me. i lost every contest i started tonight.

allan said...

tiz = the face

maybe tek is the thigh of the team.

Aww, poor pup...at least shes all better...

September is a possibility - will have to see where the finances are at esp. after the weekend trip to Fenway for the MFY series before the series in T.O.

I'll probably make it to one, doubt any more than that though. Will have to see what the pitching matchups are, etc. as well before picking a game.

Do you guys already have your seats? If so, where abouts?

SoSock said...

Jeez - Just listening to all you guys turns me green. What I would give to live anywhere near a ML park - in particular an AL park.
Oh well - at least it's not TOO far to Baltimore
(Still trying NOT to act like a kid at hannucha about this weekend)

Oh great!

Yep, we already have tickets, going to all three games. I don't remember where we're sitting, tho - somewhere on the 1st base side. I'll post it in a game thread soon.

And pup says thanks :)

laura k said...

That's a drag, Sosock.

It's one reason Toronto was a good fit for us. The park is practically down the road (20-30 mins away) and it's so easy to get tickets. When the Sox are in town, Toronto is Fenway North. And so much more pleasant than seeing them in Yankee Stadium as we used to do.

laura k said...

G'night all. Six game lead is still good. :)

tim said...

hen the Sox are in town, Toronto is Fenway North.

Ain't that the truf. Except for the gratuitous Manny booing, but I guess that's standard in parks not named Fenway.

they/mo choked in 01, then they choked in the first round in 02, fell on their face to josh and the marlins in 03, had the biggest choke job in the history of baseball in 04, i forget what happened in 05, disappeared against the tigers in 06 ...

... chronic underachievers.

p.s. the angels bounced them in the 05 alds. gak.

i admit -- it's hard to keep all these consecutive years of failure straight.

Rob said...

Not to mention getting beaten by Detroit last year.

Rob said...

Little bit of a tough one to swallow tonight, but they can handle it with the large lead they have. Puts a question mark up on Okajima and Delcarmen, but it's no mystery that Okajima's getting a little worn out.

But we go to Baltimore next, and you know how the Sox are doing against Baltimore.

So, I bid you two adeu tonight, L and A.

Back on the beam tomorrow.

allan said...

and so to bed.

Okay, Nixon33, I'm not gonna jump in your ass like I did last time. But here was your question:

"does that pretty much seal the deal for the yanks?"

I agree with redsock. You know this. Their repeated failures this century can all be called "chokes" considering that they usually have an all-star at every position and always have the highest payroll. But to answer your question, let's just pretend for a second that '04 never happened (if you're having trouble pretending, ask any Yankee fan to help!). And that the Yanks have won a few championships lately, including last year. Even with all that, I'd look at it how it is: The Yanks are 2 up in the loss column for the wild card, with 23 games left. Deal not sealed.

Of course I know what you're saying, that you get this feeling sometimes of "here we go again," regarding the fact that it's seemed a lot of times like they're going to miss the playoffs, but they've gotten in every year since '95. But if they make it, and play us--we kick their butts. No ghosts or curses. Just a measly squirrel. Like Wizard said to Travis Bickle, "Don't worry so much!"

Crappy ending tonight, but now we go down to our summer home for three with the O's. No problem.
