G142: Red Sox 4, Orioles 0

Lester (7-4-0-2-4, 98) was great and the bottom of the order, in addition to providing three early runs, also sparked a benches-clearing balk (see comments).

Lester allowed a leadoff single and a stolen base to Roberts in the first, and a two-out walk to Tejada, but escaped trouble. In the third, he allowed a single to Tejada and a walk to Millar, but kept the ball in the infield and no harm was done. Lopez pitched a perfect eighth and MDC worked through a two-out walk in the ninth.

The Sox got two runs in the second: Youkilis walked, Drew doubled to left-center, Varitek singled in Yook and Drew scored on Crisp's sac fly. Crisp singled to start the fourth, moved to third on two groundouts, then distracted Cabrera into balking him home.

Cabrera's next pitch sailed past the back of Pedroia's neck and that's when the fun began. It sounds both both team's TV color guys showed no mercy in ripping Cabrera. For the O's, Jim Palmer was thoroughly disgusted, since the team has talked with Cabrera several times about this exact problem.

Boston got its fourth run in the eighth. Ellsbury singled, stole second and scored on Youkilis single.

Both Ellsbury and Drew made fantastic catches in the late innings. Lyndon leapt at the wall in left to rob Mora and Drew hauled in Tejada liner after a long run into the right field corner.

The Tigers beat Seattle 6-1 to take over second place in the wild card chase. The Yankees are Royals are tied 2-2 after six innings.

***

Jon Lester (5.26, 86 ERA+) / Daniel Cabrera (5.06, 88 ERA+)

These guys faced each other five days ago (September 2), with Lester (6-6-2-2-1) getting the upper hand on Cabrera (6-5-3-4-7) in a 3-2 Red Sox win.

The Yankees (6.5 GB; 3 GA in WC) are in Kansas City (Kennedy/Meche). The Tigers and Mariners -- both 3 GB in the wild card -- meet in Detroit (Batista/Verlander).

Lester's been using a higher leg kick from the stretch; not rushing his delivery. Also, through his windup, I've noticed his right leg kicks up and in toward his body now (and away from the plate) kind of like Mariano Rivera and others.

So, it looks like different motions tonight to the plate for Lester that are paying off. :)

8th inning for Smoltz, but he's at 103 pitches. 2 walks.

Washington's committed four errors tonight.

her name is emma (after emma goldman

!!! how great! what a brilliant namesake.

nobody's mentioned that Cabrera's in the game.

uh, yes they did.

I had a friend who went to college in the early/mid '90s--would show up a little late to Fenway and get in easily enough.

a little myth debunking! the red sox sell out every game and they have always sold out every game... no. not true. not when the team sucked.

ish said...

Ronnie Belliard broke up the no-hit bid for Smoltz.

ish said...

Too bad, but you could tell Smoltz was running out of gas. Bobby Cox went out to get him immediately after the hit.

even in late sept 2003, i was able to walk up to the window at fenway and get 3 seats together just past first base. game was in the first or second inning if i recall.

redsock said...

any sox pen action?

L-girl said...

damn, i wish seattle wasn't collapsing.

just thought i'd throw something to the trolls. they don't like it if we don't mention the wild card race.

chief said...

MDC and somebody else where up at the end of the 7th.

nick said...

whoops! yup, our gracious host mentioned it himself.

Anyhow, bath time is over. We're going to read a bit and it's bedtime. Doubt I'll be back, so...

Good night all! and Go Royals!

gameday saying lyndon hit the first pitch to rcf. it was a 1-0 pitch.

So Detroit beat Seattle.

Well, looks like we're going to be watching Detroit now.

are the trolls getting bored? lately, it's been only a post or two at the end of the game -- but like within 45 seconds of the end of the gamne.

so at least i know they are watching the sox and reading us.

my loyal fans.

L-girl said...

say good night to emma for us. tell her not to throw any bombs tonight.

Kennedy got out of a little jam (1st and 2nd, 0 out)... still tied at 2.

i think we'll be playing detroit in the alcs.

nice line for lester tonight. (i know allan posted it earlier.)

Been lurking for a while.
It was top 7 when I got in and I had to catch up. See I missed a little excitement.
Watched the video of the "brawl that never happened", as most of them don't. Was glad to see Tito out in front coming out of the dugout. Just gives me warm fuzzies :)

HE MAKES THE CATCH!!!!!

oh for sure. you gotta start early to make it believeable. like tweaking the polls before the fake election.

i just enjoyed that torre quote.

SoSock said...

And I believe he's done it

redsock said...

maybe if i say the mfy are choke artists again, that'll get them out of hiding. teasing them with that a couple of nights ago worked. idiots!

they never even knew you were baiting them.

BAITING YOU! got that? he's baiting you and you idiots keep falling for it!

"The new short stop, is that Clayton?"

Jerry - the mic is on.

SoSock said...

Damn - a lot of work for that.

But again, it all depends how he feels."

Jeez, can't you just hear the whining - I don't feel like pitching tonight?

L-girl said...

Great catch by Drew!!!

chief said...

Nice play Werd.

redsock said...

hell of a catch in the corner from drew!!!

ish said...

I find it funny that there was no new shortstop for the Sox.

L-girl said...

Jeez, can't you just hear the whining - I don't feel like pitching tonight?

Rog and Joe probably have some code words so Rog doesn't have to debase himself too much. "Gee skip, my hamstring is acting up..." But he winks as he says hamstring.

chief said...

But again, it all depends how he feels.

But I still get paid, right?

redsock said...

yeah -- but they are choke artists.

..

cano looks at strike 3 on an 11-pitch AB with the bases loaded -- tied at 2-2 mid 6th. choker!!!

They're on their feet at Fenway South...

Just got up, as friday is the day I try to get some sleep before the night job. Good to see that Lester had a good box tonight. Maybe I should not watch when he pitches.

So, I see J.D. has went 1 for 2 with 2 walks, if he did that for the rest of the year maybe, just maybe RSN would get off his back.

Still, should be a good win for the Sox tonight.

oh for sure. you gotta start early to make it believeable. like tweaking the polls before the fake election

No way Rahhhger pitches in Fenway, no way (another reason why I don't think he is the best pitcher ever).

L-girl said...

s1c, if you dvr'd the game (or some such), you'll enjoy remy's rant during the bench clearing non-brawl. i transcribed a bunch of it in the game thread, you can scroll up and then multiply it by like 5 or 10.

Interesting side effect of the approval process is that comments drop into place by order of post, not order of approval. So it can be easy to miss comments if you aren't careful.

i'm glad you mentioned that, i keep meaning to say that. you have to refresh and scroll up a bit to see if you've missed anything. no matter how fast we approve the comments, there's always a lag - esp if we're also commenting ourselves.

i keep saying i'm going to just moderate and stay out of the thread but i can't help myself, i'm addicted.

I saw your posting. The great thing about the night job, I have NESN, so I get to watch the Sox in two on Fridays!!!

So will watch that, I also do the MLB.Tv if the game is really good, like last saturday Buccholz's no-no, I watched the game at home, went to work watched it again on Sox in Two, then watched on MLB.Tv.

The advantages of having NESN!!

chief said...

Not sure what happened with that double post - I don't think it's THAT big a deal. Just an observation. :-)

L-girl said...

nice win! g'night all, see you tomw.

redsock said...

sorry about that, chief!

SoSock said...

Chief - I'd noticed that same thing, a couple of times thought I didn't get posted, then realized it was back a few.
We will get by.
(Wow, last night it was Baez, tonight it's Jerry. Am I showing my age or what?)

SoSock said...

L &/or RS -
Definitely NOT complaining, just observing.
I don't know how you keep up with all you do anyway. I know you're real fans, so you're watching while you do all this other stuff. Couldn't do it. Your typing skills are obviously way better than yours truly.
Before I go - Everyone send good vibes that I get to see something special tomorrow and/or Sunday. Would be good for me AND the team.
Dice, then Beckett - I'd say I have a shot :)

redsock said...

JtC in for the MFY. NY 3-2.

ish said...

3-2 mfy... JtC into the bottom of the 7th.

Bases were loaded for the Yankees in the Top 7, 2 out, and Posada (who HRed earlier) hit one deep to center, but David DeJesus ran back and made an over-the-shoulder catch.

redsock said...

YES showing lots of shots of Daddy C.

ish said...

Joba's father is at the game in KC tonight. Big guy, probably in his early 60s. Very proud looking guy. They showed him when Chamberlain came in, and there were a couple of tears going down his face.

I don't care who they are, that's a feel-good moment right there.

redsock said...

I've read a little about them in Newsday. It is a good story.

redsock said...

But JtC is gonna give up runs eventually. Might as well start tonight.

ish said...

Got the first man on... It's a start.

redsock said...

gameday and yes both had that last pitch at 101.

redsock said...

fuckin yes cameras truped me on that fly ball.

fuckin yes cameras truped me on that fly ball.

ME TOO! I was yelling "YES!! GO GO!" but noooo. I've been TRUPED.

ish said...

Who would they pitch in the 8th?

redsock said...

With three dicks on the pond (thanks, jere!), Abreu whiffs (10 pitch AB).

ish said...

Ankiel defends himself on HGH.

"Everything was legal," he said. "There was no violation of major league rules. There was no violation of any laws. At this point, if there's anything more to decide, major league baseball will look at it and let us know."

Holy shit! Check out the White Sox Twins game:

CWS: 120 000 106 - 10

redsock said...

e-rod doesn't drop a lazy pop and there are 2 outs.

ish said...

Wow. Doesn't say too much about the pitching, does it?

ish said...

And the Yankees won.

redsock said...

Grudz whiffs. 3-2 final.

ish said...

So where does that put the magic number?

redsock said...

15.

Jere said...

"That's really the downside about the Red Sox being so popular. You can't just walk up before the game and get in. They do sell a handful day-of-game tickets, but you've got to get there very early.

Not to mention the prices are horrendous."

You can always get tickets to any park, pretty cheap. The first step is realizing that's the truth as opposed to "you can't get tickets." I get to like 15 games at Fenway a year (while living 3-4 hours away until this year) and I don't pay more than 25 or 30 bucks each time. Sometimes I pay 12 for upper bleachers, then stand at the back of the grandstand near home or the bases, a great, close view. Or sit in the box seats and hope the person doesn't show.

And speaking of myth debunking, all those Yankee stadium attendances don't take into account the fact that many of their tickets are discounted, sometimes more than 50%, while Fenway doesn't do any discounting any more.

"Very proud looking guy. They showed him when Chamberlain came in, and there were a couple of tears going down his face."

I can't believe someone said this and no one responded with, "Did someone litter on his property?"

Nice Maxwell Smart reference, redsock.

L-girl said...

The key there being "anymore". Of course in 1998, 99 or 2000 there weren't many discounted tickets at YS either. It all depends how a team is doing, no matter what city you're in.

Oh please, this guy cried at every Nebraska game as well , he makes for good tv ..a feel good monent at that time would be a 2run hr....There are never any feel good moments with the yankees......Remember this kid threw at Yook twice..I haven't found a Yankee fan in Waterbury yet that says he didn't.......
