G145: Devil Rays 1, Red Sox 0

Kazmir (7-5-0-2-10, 118) bested Schilling (6-5-1-1-5, 99) on a night when the Red Sox did not get a man to third base.

Norton doubled to start the fifth. It looked like Ellsbury had a play on it with a leap at standings on the Wall. It dislodged the "70" for Toronto's losses. Navarro bunted Norton to third and Wilson brought him in with a fly ball to right.

Boston's best chance at a run came in the seventh. Kielty singled to left and, after Yook struck out, Varitek walked. Ellsbury fanned and Cora grounded into a force play at third.

It looked like the Red Sox might have a little momentum when Crisp started a 8-6-3 DP in the top of the ninth with a leaping grab at the garage door in center, but Reyes shut the door: Ortiz 5-3, Youkilis L5, Varitek K.

***

Scott Kazmir (3.79, 121 ERA+) / Curt Schilling (4.04, 113 ERA+)

This is Kazmir's fifth start against the Red Sox this year. His IP: 6, 6, 6, 5.2. 3.42 ERA. ... Bobby Kielty is hitting .438 (7-for-16) against Red Dot.

Schilling has not faced the Devil Rays this season.

The MFY (5.5 GB in the East, but 4 GA in the WC) are off tonight before starting a series in Toronto on Tuesday.

weird that schilling hasn't faced the rays yet...

oh, s1c's gonna love this:

1. Lugo DH
2. Crisp CF
3. Pedroia 2B
4. Lowell 3B
5. Kielty RF
6. Youkilis 1B
7. Varitek C
8. Ellsbury LF
9. Cora SS

1. Iwamura 3B
2. Crawford LF
3. Pena 1B
4. Upton CF
5. Young RF
6. Harris 2B
7. Norton DH
8. Navarro C
9. Wilson SS

Tiz: "Man, my knee's been hurting again. I don't know. I guess a day off never [is] bad. I was missing a lot of pitches yesterday. Probably get a day off, so against a guy that kind of owns you ... it's not bad."

Rob said...

Ever thought you'd see a day when Pedroia was hitting third? Hey, at least that's not Lugo hitting in the three hole. Wow.

Considering the pitcher we're going up against, this looks like as good a lineup as could be put out there.

tim said...

I fucking love it too. Pedroia filling the shoes of Papi - you GOTTA LOVE IT!

Fuck sakes, even Drew DH would be better than that. (That coming from a statistically-illiterate point of view)

tim said...

I should say, statistically illiterate POV.

s1c said...

Actually considering that Ortiz and Drew are batting a combined 5 for 37 against Kazmir in their careers sitting both of them down is fine by me.

I am surprised that LBJ is playing though. Figured that Francona might have sat him down for Moss, but what the heck, might as well see how he does against a tough lefty now.

LUGO LEADING OFF though! Give me a break. Lugo and Crisp are a combined 7 for 31 against this kid, do we really want to see those type of numbers in the top two spots.

Like Pedroia in the third spot though since besides Kielty he and Lowell are the only players who are over 300 against Kaz.

SoSock said...

What a scorecard!
Should probably save it for posterity. I can't believe you'll ever see it again.
BTW - When I said I hoped to see something special in Baltimore this past weekend, I didn't really mean Dice's WORST performance ever.
I blame him for the hangover I had Sunday. (At least I got to see the Bot on Sunday) :)
Off to Choir practice - yeah, really. With this order I'm probably not going to miss a whole lot, but I hope I'm wrong.

laura k said...

Does anyone else here think bostondirtdogs.com is a joke?

I would say everyone, or almost everyone.

I think it's safe to say most people here see that site for what it really is. At least one long-standing member of Joy Nation has tried to get other Red SOx bloggers to not link to BDD.

BDD is a big pile of poo.

s1c said...

Serenity marathon at the house this week so many good lines!!

Saw this at Bradford's blog - - Red Sox LOB totals starting September 2: 6,9,6,9,6,9,6,9.

(example of great line - "if you take advantage... a special hell, one reserved for child molesters and people who talk at the movies)

s1c said...

BDD is a big pile of poo.

It used to be not so bad, but ever since the globe bought the site it has became just like the paper, worthless.

laura k said...

people who talk at the movies

We hate those people. They drove us to Netflix.

What is a serenity marathon?

tim said...

well, off to see the ever chillin Bedouin Soundclash at my university tonight...good local (T.O.) "ska" type band....making it pretty big now apparently, judging by the ticket prices.

go sox! i'll be there in spirit! haha...laters

laura k said...

I always hated it. He was racist, among other things. He probably had to tone that down when he sold out to the Globe. Although I don't know, b/c I haven't read him in a long, long time.

The only thing he ever did well IMO was the amusing headlines.

s1c said...

The short lived series Firefly - the marathon is because the B-fly is converting another friend to a Firefly fan!

Amazon listed here. Trust me its the best $29 you will spend this year!

laura k said...

The short lived series Firefly

Ah, gotcha, thanks.

I wouldn't buy a DVD set of a show I've never seen, but I'd love to see some of it this winter, a/k/a Movie Season.

nick said...

Hoho! In play, no outs for Lugo.

allan said...

unbelievable that that was not an error.

yet remy is still in love with fielding %

nick said...

oh sure.. on a fielding error.

definitely a lineup to behold.

laura k said...

So we've got choir practice, a ska band and Firefly.

Here in Mississauga, we have one TV, two computers, two dogs, and two glasses of wine.

allan said...

nesn says hit.

gameday says E8.

allan said...

now gameday has a hit. the official scorer is apparently upton's mom.

nick said...

Ah...I have the album "Bedouin Soundclash" by Badawi that they took their name from. I haven't heard 'em, but I dig reggae and particularly deep dubby stuff. I see they're more ska which is cool, though.

Have fun at it.

s1c said...

now gameday has a hit. the official scorer is apparently upton's mom.

Another reason to look at earned runs vs unearned runs. When the worst defense is only making 2 errors per 100 chances you can't really place much stock in fielding %.

laura k said...

there goes the no-hitter

Ron said...

one reserved for child molesters and people who talk at the movies

Just being pedantic, but that should be "...people who talk at the theatre."

And L-Girl, if you have netflix, grab the first Firefly DVD. It's excellent. That is, if you like any or all of the following:

Westerns
Sci-Fi
Well written, imperfect characters
Clever plots
Strong female characters

What you should NOT do: Watch the movie Serenity before you watch the 14(?) episodes of Firefly on DVD. The movie stands on its own, but the back story of the series adds a tremendous amount.

allan said...

off to see the ever chillin Bedouin Soundclash at my university tonight

this "where will tim be tonight" moment is brought to you by ...

laura k said...

... Rand McNally? (Cue "Diner")

... Google Maps?

... Time Out Toronto?

laura k said...

Just being pedantic, but that should be "...people who talk at the theatre."

Nothing wrong with saying at the movies. Is there?

And L-Girl, if you have netflix, grab the first Firefly DVD.

I was an early Netflixer in the US, but there's no Netflix in Canada. We use Zip.ca, the same idea, but not as well run.

I don't care for Westerns or Sci-Fi, but if it's good enough, it can overcome that. I mean, look at Star Wars.

I do love character-driven writing with strong plots, and s1c mentioned the great female characters, of course I love that.

If Zip.ca has it, I'll check it out for sure.

laura k said...

Re Westerns/Sci-Fi/strong women, I love Xena. Haven't seen it in years, but used to be completely addicted.

s1c said...

Chief are you a fan? Do you listen to any of The Signal pods?

Uh, yes, well... speaking of naked and articulate...

allan said...

hmmm ... 1 game comment in 23 minutes?

laura k said...

If Varitek was hurt, we could see Schilling and Cash on the all-money team.

laura k said...

That's my boy!!

Rob said...

That answers your lefty/lefty question about Sir Lyndon.

laura k said...

10 game hit streak for LBJ! Ten games is the beginning of a streak in this house.

nick said...

what is the lowest thread-count on this site? or rather comment-count thread or threaded post or post-threaded or whatever.

s1c said...

10 game hit streak for LBJ! Ten games is the beginning of a streak in this house.

To bad you can't add his minor league games. Would be a 33 game streak then.

allan said...

lowest comment #?

0.

nick said...

in a game thread? I don't know when it was, I'm too new here, but at some point there must've been a steady rise in game thread comment quantity to where now it's generally 200+ (well, not the last couple)...

allan said...

earlier this season, it was pretty low.

laura k said...

no game threads w/ zero comments. but the game threads only took off this year. it was a big deal when it went to 200+ comments. then 400, 500...

playoffs should be fun. :)

laura k said...

dusty with the hit

Rob said...

It's a little surprising for tonight for it to be as low because of this being a Monday night in early September. Most people are back into the daily grind of autumn and winter. I thought there'd be more people here, as Pedroia knocks one into center field.

Maybe they should employ the Ortiz shift on him

laura k said...

remy: "a mini 4-game hitting streak for pedroia"

no. 4 games is not a streak! or even a mini streak. it's just a good week.

laura k said...

It's a little surprising for tonight for it to be as low because of this being a Monday night in early September.

Who knows about these things, there's little logic to it, I think.

So Ish, are you posting and watching at the same time, or jogging back and forth?

allan said...

it looks like the # of comments in game threads started taking off in mid-may -- esp. the atlanta series on may 19 and the mfy series after that.

s1c said...

About the time when it looked like this might be a very special season. 29-13 on the 19th.

allan said...

About the time when it looked like this might be a very special season. 29-13 on the 19th.

Bunch of bandwagoners, then!

laura k said...

s1c, that's true, things were shaping up to be very exciting.

laura k said...

ha! don and remy are ragging on steve phillips w/out saying his name.

Rob said...

L, I started jogging back and forth. Now it's down to a walk. I check in between half-innings.

I had a feeling it was Steve Phillips they were talking about.

laura k said...

wait, hold the press, allan informs me (after looking it up on wikipedia) that steve phillips was not responsible for the kazmir trade.

never mind.

steve phillips is still a moron, but he didn't do that trade.

allan said...

13 months after phillips was fired, jim duquette did the kazmir trade.

duquette now has a high level FO job with the orioles. (figures.)

laura k said...

is he ok? is the 70 ok?

s1c said...

Schilling's change up has looked pretty good tonight. 8-10 mph difference also makes a good separation.

The bats need to get going though!

laura k said...

This is annoying. Let's get out of this inning and get some runs.

allan said...

fucking bloop.

get that 3rd out pls.

laura k said...

Schilling gets out w/out further damage. Now:

RUNS PLEASE!!!!

s1c said...

What is that? 4 k's to end innings for schilling?

Will be interested in his start vs the MFY's this week. Right now though you have to say that Schilling is pitching well going into the post season.

s1c said...

Ok LBJ - it is time to steal a base

laura k said...

damn! doubled off. i thought that ball was going to drop in for a hit.

laura k said...

Watch out, LBJ comin' through! Nice catch.

Re getting doubled off, at least if he does, you know it couldn't be helped. That man is fast.

laura k said...

It's the LBJ show!

Amy said...

Hi everyone. I have missed the back and forth of JOS but have been listening to most games on the radio in the car lately. OK, basehit for Crisp. Perhaps we can score a run?

Amy said...

what's with banging bottles on the dugout? New way to start a rally for the youngsters?

allan said...

lips not enjoying the stereo "drums"!!

allan said...

"bill of the cap high" -- DRINK!!!

laura k said...

I miss listening to games on the radio.

laura k said...

Fat Face Fetter's Fish Shack?

Amy said...

Yeah, radio can be pretty cool, except Joe Castiglione can be a little annoying. And I miss seeing Pedroia's mouthing all those "cusses"

nick said...

kid's just finishing her bath and we're off for some reading. Good luck to all. I might be by later.

Gameday still doesn't have a strike zone, but now they've got some sort of chat function. dunno, I haven't created an account there.

Amy said...

Gee, I miss giving kids baths and bedtime reading....though the empty nest has it advantages

laura k said...

emma's the cleanest kid we know :)

allan said...

red dot at 96 thru 6.

only 1-0, get him outta there and pound duh pen.

corey in for curt.

laura k said...

i did kids baths and bedtime stories when i was a nanny. it was fun, i'm glad i had the experience.

i'm also glad to say i don't miss it.

our kids all have four legs and tails.

Rob said...

I miss listening to games on the radio.

It's fantastic when you've got two good radio guys. I've just given up listening to Glenn Geffner because he annoys me so much. I listen to Don and Jerry for Glenn's innings. It's too bad, because I love listening to the radio while watching the game.

laura k said...

I must confess I never listened to Red Sox games on the radio. My radio days were w/ the Yankees. I used to listen on the radio with the TV on, my favourite.

Amy said...

I love my four legged kids. One dog, one rather psychotic 16 year old cat. But they don't need bedtime reading.

Can we please beat the Devil Rays? I want to sweep these guys, going into the Yankee series strong and psyched.

nick said...

still here. she was watching gameday with me. She digs the baths and they're a) calming before bed and b) make the morning that much smoother.

I sometimes have the image of "Big Daddy" in my head where Adam Sandler's kid is the dirty kid in school. Not mine, though we let her choose all her own outfits--the girl is seriously "fashiony" (her word).

Amy said...

So Lgirl, are you really a Canadian, or have you just adopted the British spelling of favorite since moving there? :)

allan said...

Went to see who has the walkoff tonight and it's ...

L-girl!!!

Rob said...

RS, that would save on shipping costs, wouldn't it?

Amy said...

Who ever would have thought that on Sept 10th Ortiz have not yet had a walkoff?

nick said...

Game'll continue 1-0 until the bottom of the 9th and they'll throw Papi in to pinch in the 2-spot on the innng and ka-flammers: big papi dong!

now I'm really gone for a while.

allan said...

she could read my copy, but still wanted to enter.

Amy said...

Nice hit for Youk!

allan said...

quick bounce off the wall for 5ball. let's go yoook

laura k said...

So Lgirl, are you really a Canadian, or have you just adopted the British spelling of favorite since moving there? :)

I'm US born, in another year I'll be a dual citizen. (Or at least in one more year I can apply.)

But those spellings are not just British - they're Canadian. We give the temp in Celsius, we order deli in grams, we give distances in kilometres... and we add these silly, unnecessary Us to certain words. :)

andy said...

I am annoyed that the MFY have the all star game stadium host patches on their uniforms. its quite a ways away. The Sox don't put fucking World Series Host stadium patches on their uniforms. another reason we are better.

laura k said...

fashiony, that's great. night baths are good too. :)

RS, that would save on shipping costs, wouldn't it?

:-)

Amy said...

OK, I got lost. I thought Youk got the hit, but then Youk struck out. I guess it was Kielty. I must be going blind

So you have adopted Canadian spelling! Very cute. I always like those extra Us---so quaint seeming, like Ye Olde Shoppe.

laura k said...

The Sox don't put fucking World Series Host stadium patches on their uniforms.

Are you sure they didn't in 99?

Also, they're hyping their new stadium. The usual stuff. Not peculiar to the Yankees.

laura k said...

It annoys me when Red Sox fans have to concoct ways that the team is supposedly better than the Yankees. It's ridiculous.

Amy said...

Tek, please get a hit. It is the BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH. We need a run!

Amy said...

OK, a walk is as good as a hit, right?

allan said...

from 0-2, tek lays off the high fb and walks. wow!!!

laura k said...

Right you are!

andy said...

it was more of a way to say we are in the world series than anything. I don't really care about the patches. It annoys me when people miss my point and then complain of annoyance about what my point isn't. I hope my sarcasm doesn't make you mad.

Amy said...

OK, from my favoUrite to yours, L-Girl. Dynamic duo here...

laura k said...

doesn't make me mad, i just mistook your point, or perhaps you changed your point after i posted.

Amy said...

Damn. Can Cora save the day?

laura k said...

OK, from my favoUrite to yours, L-Girl. Dynamic duo here...

I'll give you a looney if Cora gets on base :)

Amy said...

A looney? Is that also Canadian lingo?

andy said...

no post or point change here. we good?

Amy said...

ARGHH, how can we NOT score a run? Is Kazmir leaving soon? We need to face their pen.

andy said...

we need to buy Kasmir before the Yankees do.

laura k said...

A looney? Is that also Canadian lingo?

A looney is our dollar coin. There's a picture of a loon (the bird) on one side.

The two-dollar coin is called a Tooney. :)

allan said...

kazmir at 118 pitches. his nite is done.

lopez in.

laura k said...

andy, we're always good, all is well.

i'll have to find something else to be annoyed at ;-)

Rob said...

Dan Wheeler has struggled since coming to the Rays from Houston.

Amy said...

Speaking of dynamic duos, who is moderating? And do you two sit side by side with laptops and talk only on the blog or do you also actually speak? If that's too nosy, you can just ignore my question. Just trying to figure out how you two pull this off!

Amy said...

A looney and a tooney. I love it. Where would American pop culture be without the healthy perspective of the Canadians who seem to get the humor in life and enjoy the good things without the crazy American arrogance?

Amy said...

Nice K of Pena!

laura k said...

we both have our laptops out during the game - although that's new for me. allan has always followed the game on his laptop as well as the TV - he used to do the SOSH game thread.

so anyway, we both have our computers out, we talk to each other in real time, we're both moderating, occasionally reading comments out loud to each other, and he is also scoring the game.

it's complicated!

i don't know how he does it on the weekend when we're both at work. then he's scoring, moderating, watching and supposedly working. i'm lucky if I can just follow GDGD.

allan said...

2 K for J-Lo!

White Flag in.

laura k said...

sometimes i do more of the moderating because allan is too busy - or sometimes he does more because i'm sick of the computer.

we're a good team.

fortunately that is not limited to moderating jos :)

Amy said...

GDGD? Boy, I thought men weren't good at multitasking! That's amazing! How can he get any work done?

laura k said...

Where would American pop culture be without the healthy perspective of the Canadians who seem to get the humor in life and enjoy the good things without the crazy American arrogance?

Well said!

Even without the U in humoUr :)

laura k said...

Thanks White Flag!!

laura k said...

GDGD = god damn game day

One of our commenters made it up, maybe Zenslinger?

Boy, I thought men weren't good at multitasking!

Men with ADD are :)

Rob said...

MLB has submitted a first draft of the 2008 schedule to the Players Association today. Nothing's official, but the schedule "lines up" so the Red Sox and A's open the season in Japan.

Amy said...

I love the image of you two with the laptops, scorecards, talking, two dogs! Sounds like a good idea for a sitcom. Thanks for sharing!

laura k said...

Amy, what do you and your husband do for the RS-Yankees series? Do you watch is separate rooms? Do you have rules about ragging on each other's teams? (Same disclaimer - too personal, just ignore.)

Allan and I used to have rules, but he routinely ignored them.

laura k said...

I wonder what the sitcom would be called...? we move to canada?

allan said...

Allan and I used to have rules, but he routinely ignored them.

But everything all worked out for the best!

laura k said...

RUNS PLEASE!!!!!!

Amy said...

We try to watch in the same room, but we have rules. Like, no cheering for your own team out loud, but you can moan if your team does something bad. No bad mouthing the other team out loud. And if one person doesn't want to watch, that person has to leave the room.

laura k said...

But everything all worked out for the best!

thanks mom

allan said...

SB and then a 2B in the gap???

laura k said...

Amy, that sounds good - very mature. I wonder if it always ends up as mature as it starts out. Sometimes it can be hard to keep perspective.

laura k said...

Papi's putting on batting gloves...

Amy said...

LOL! We almost killed each other in 2003 and in 2004. Before that, I could watch the Yankees easily in the post season and feel ok for Harvey's team winning. But after Aaron Boone, and Zimmer attacking Pedro, I just couldn't be neutral any more even when the Sox aren't in it, like last year's post season/

Amy said...

OH, man, Pedroia said the F-word again! I wonder how many kids are good at lip reading!

laura k said...

We almost killed each other in 2003 and in 2004.

Oh man, I can well understand. My conversion was in mid-2003. I don't know what we would have done otherwise.

Ooooo here comes Ortiz!

Amy said...

OK, a little too early for your walkoff, L-girl

laura k said...

Too early, but I'll take it!!

allan said...

OH, man, Pedroia said the F-word again! I wonder how many kids are good at lip reading!

i hope tejada's kids aren't watching nesn.

laura k said...

Unless of course Dr Doubles wants to do it first, that will be fine...

laura k said...

Pedroia is reputed to have a vocabulary that would embarrass many sailors.

laura k said...

OK, I'm getting my walk-off tonight!

Amy said...

again, men LOB

I guess Ortiz can tie, but no walkoff....:(

allan said...

tiz was not announced so he can still PH for anybody.

Amy said...

ahh, didn't think about that

andy said...

i am sure they PH Large Flo for the 3rd batter or the first one after a hit.

laura k said...

OCOC!!!!!!!!!!!! with the web gem and the DP!!!!

Amy said...

loved it! loved coco's expression also...!!

allan said...

funny look on coco's face after the DP -- hmmmm, not bad!!!

laura k said...

yeah, ococ was like, hey, not bad :)

andy said...

i PH hinske for kielty or Rolls Royce Clayton for him

andy said...

it is awesome when they are impressed with eachothers performances

laura k said...

nice 5 pitch inning! a little scary, but nice :)

laura k said...

ok, we need some serious walkoff mojo now

allan said...

clayton should be serving hot dogs in the bleachers -- nothing closer to the game than that.

Rob said...

What a play by oCoC! And then Delmon Young gets ejected. Timlin was a very fortunate fellow.

And heeeeere we go.

Amy said...

So much for waiting for a MOB for Ortiz

laura k said...

ok, no book for me, but i'm good with that. i can still read it if i want :)

Amy said...

Can we PLEASE at least the tie this game now?

Amy said...

Since when do we lose to the DRs??

allan said...

Anybody got a dong?

laura k said...

I hate losing a 1-0 game. Good thing we haven't lost yet.

andy said...

why the fuck did they put ortiz batting first? he hits homers.

Amy said...

I think Tek can do it.

Amy said...

Have we had ANY walkoffs season?

laura k said...

he's the AL leader in OBP.

who would you rather him PH for? Yook? Tek?

it makes sense where he hit

Amy said...

OK, up to the Captain.

laura k said...

not from ortiz. have we had any from anyone else...?

andy said...

now wtf do we do?

Amy said...

oh yeah dumb me, MOTHERS DAY

laura k said...

come on cap'n, do it for amy...

allan said...

In addition to having the best OBP in the AL, a HR would tie the game. Which is exactly what we want.

laura k said...

i was trying to remember if mother's day was a walkoff. my brain is old.

allan said...

tek fouls off the SAHE

laura k said...

crap.

i hate a 1-0 loss.

good thing we have a five game lead.

Amy said...

DAMN Was that really a strike? I hate losing to the Rays

Rob said...

Backwards K did 'em in. Who'da thunk that?

allan said...

instead of mother's day, we get motherfuckers.

nice pitch to end it though.

andy said...

BALL

Amy said...

Mothers Day was a walkoff. We were there (as you know). My daughter wanted to leave in the 7th, I said NO. It was MOther's Day so she said we could stay. When they pulled off 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th, I smirked and said, "See? YOU NEVER LEAVE BEFORE IT IS OVER."

Rob said...

There was one other walk-off win this season. Lowell hit a tying dong in the 9th, 'Tek doubled then Coco singled him in. The day that happened? Can't remember off the top of my head.

laura k said...

Amy, you're a good mother :)

And since you were there, you have even less excuse than I do to not remember. (J/K)

At least Detroit won tonight. Now it's Go Jays for a couple of days.

See y'all tomorrow!

Amy said...

Yes, an important lesson learned...for life and for Red Sox. As that MFY Yogi said, "It ain't over til it's over." But this one IS over...so good night all!

Rob said...

Disappointing one, but we'll get 'em tomorrow. Gotta keep playing. Goodnight, L!

SoSock said...

Yuch !!
Very disappointing.
Got home in time to see the last at-bat. GDGD showed that last strike to be well off the plate.
Oh well, back at it tomorrow.
LL practice Tuesday, then Rosh Hashannah on Wed. Maybe I'll get to join in a whole game on Thur.
That would be a good time to do it too, eh?

The annual "take my parents to Fenway" game. And they didn't get to see A. Manny 2. Papi (except for that one pinch-hit AB) or III. any runs. Good thing my mom insisted on getting tix for Trot's return, so the year wasn't a total loss for them.
