Down 4-0 after five, the Red Sox scored three times in the sixth, fell back 5-3, got within one on Cora's eighth inning dong, then went meekly in the ninth against Gas Can Reyes.
New York beat Toronto 7-5, so the East lead is back to 1.5. The Jays and Chokers play tomorrow afternoon while the Sox head back to Fenway. (Tigers also won today, so NY's magic number to eliminate them is 2.)

Tim Wakefield (4.73, 96 ERA+) / Edwin Jackson (5.99, 77 ERA+)
This is Wakefield's sixth start against Tampa Bay this year. In 30.1 innings, he's allowed 29 hits, 8 walks (against 24 strikeouts), a 3.56 ERA and a .643 OPS. He's made two starts at the Trop this year (13 IP, 0.69 ERA).
Blue Jays/MFY (McGowan/Mussina) at 1 PM.

1-2-3 seventh just sets up the heroics. Dustin leads off with a single, Papi blasts a home run to tie, the doctor makes a house call and then drew stays ON FIRE.
Gagne and Bot then seal the deal.
(in case none of this happens I blame the Jose Cuervo)
We clinched a spot. Tito won't pull out the stops to win.
If the hitters hit, cool.
If not, that's cool too.
I bet Terry doesn't make the substitutions though---it would undermine Mirabelli's and Cora's confidence....
btw, i was channeling tito there and do not agree with it.
mussina looking good, fuck.
Pats beat the Bills 38-7
Is it me or are a lot of these scores coincidental to other games. It's NYM 6 FLA 3, and then MFY 6 TOR 3. Then PHI 3 WSH 5, and now BOS 3 TB 5. Strange...
white flag warming.
btw, i was channeling tito there and do not agree with it.
Phew, you had me worried.
KC 2, DET 7, FINAL.
The Yankees magic number can only move by one today.
mussina looking good, fuck.
isn't he on a 1 start look good, then unable to get out of the 3rd for the next 3 trend?
Bad news for the Brew Crew. Atlanta tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the 7th, and the Cubs have added 2 more to lead the Pirates, 3-0 in the 6th
AROUND THE HORN.
NOW AROUND THE BASES WE GO. Come on, RUNS!
Let's score some runs now. REALLY.
i like this corey chap.
THAT IS ONE SMART DONG!!!!
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! CORA!
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES! So glad Tito didn't listen to us and take him out for Pedroia..
What a waste Cora.
I loathe single shots.
Sort of.
wtf-Cora goes deep, expecting thunder and lightning to now strike me from a clear blue sky
EXCELLENT MOVE not batting Pedroia.
Tito = Genius!!!
Do it, Papi. Make it two HRs in a row.
I think it's time to slap one down the third base line. Ya hear me, Papi?
Jays with no Thomas, Wells, Glaus, Overbay. Maybe Burnett has a shutout left in him tomorrow afternoon and maybe Rios hits one out. Hope springs day-to-day.
Castiglione: He could bunt for a double...
Buzz kill, Papi.
Instead, Ortiz takes the Ted Williams approach. Try to bust through the shift.

actually his last start he pitched 7 shutout inning
Down by a run and they are giving you a single.
"No, thanks, I'll ground out."
Essackly.
OAK 2, CLE 6, FINAL.
MIL 4, ATL 5, BOT 7th
Does the fire still burn?
So our power hitters ground out, and Cora hits a HR....gotta love baseball.
Mets bullpen is going to cost them some playoff life if they keep going like this.
NYM 6, FLA 5, BOT 8th. 2 on, 0 out, Heilman pitching.
Well, I blame the Cuervo and its off to increase my dosage of the same.
fragging Sox, Fragging Jays and fuck you devil rays.
The thought of the bottom of our order having to hit runs in the 9th fills me with the sort of hope rarely experienced this side of attending a dental appointment and hoping it is not costing a fortune.
It is painful, it is unpleasant and it leaves a nasty taste in your mouth!
PIT 0, CUBS 6. BOT 6th.
Looks like the NL Central is finally starting to decide itself.
SEA 0, LAA 3, TOP 3rd
I wonder if Corey should be used more often as a reliever...
For the Red Sox's current interests, it would be a very good idea to come back in the ninth.
Yankees winning, Indians have won, and the Angels are winning.
I wonder if Corey should be used more often as a reliever...
I think he just might have earned a playoff spot in the pen.
molina with ANOTHER HIT 7-3 yanks
"For the Red Sox's current interests, it would be a very good idea to come back in the ninth."
we can do that
come on timlin shut it down.
Lopez, Delcarmen loosening.
Delcarmen is constantly not being used the way he should, I don't think. He's better than the innings and situations he's been pitching in.
JESUS! that was too close...
White Flag is waving today.
Slow hook today, apparently.
LYNDON with a nice catch. Questionable route, but good execution.
ok nice catch. now get timlin outta there.
Dear Francona,
Look I know that Timlin was part of the 25. I know you love him, but dude he really, really, and I mean really is giving us ulcers.
that is all,
RSN
wow cant believe he got out of that
LETS GET REYES! AGAIN!
Hmmmmm...Crisp, Hinske, and Dougie left.
had to do work for that half inning, but i'm here for the 9th.
are we really getting reyes again?
maddon must be a red sox fan (he did interview for the job tito got)
reyes: 3 saves, 3 blown saves against the red sox
need 1
would love 2
Welp, Coco was the most important batter in that inning...Now it's Hinske.
gotta PH -- a dong ties it.
Welp, we got Varitek pinch-hitting.
Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope!
let's go CAPT
Up to Tek...
damn....
Damn...
ugh.
I'm following Jays on TV and Sox on MLB-audio, but the updates here are quicker than the radio. The terrorists at COGECO will never get my freedoms!! (or Matt Stairs, either).
NOT COOL.
Barring a fantastic Jays comeback, we'll be back to a game and a half. Not to mention we're no longer on top of the AL again.
Welp, get some rest tomorrow and we'll see what kind of horrors we can rain down on Oakland.
shit
the jays have scored 7-5 now in the 8th.
Fragging Sox another freaking 1 run loss.
also, RIP Marcel.
By the way, it is 7-5 Yankees. Don't know what happened but they've scored 2.
viscaino struggling...
Wakefield's first loss ever at the Trop.
i think stairs hit a 2 run dong.
the cunt coming in
2 on, 2 out. Go-ahead run batting. Adam Lind. Crowd senses a Joba entrance.
Wouldn't this be the first time he's come in in the middle of an inning? Mmmmm inherited runner effect.
Excellent obit, ish. I'm sure the NY Times will have a lengthy one, too.
From your link:
Marceau also made film appearances. The most famous was Mel Brooks' 1976 film "Silent Movie" — he had the only speaking line, "Non!"

well lets clinch this fucker at fenway
1.5 = the knot in my stomach is back.
clinching at fenway sounds great.
clinching at fenway sounds great
We have a choice?
We have a choice?
Yep. clinch at fenway or not clinch at all.
Had a long conversation with one of the Asst. Softball coaches for U of Maine this morning, re better to be healthy or win the division.
Consensus - If Theo and Francona don't win the WS and lose the division they better pack their bags because the out cry would be worse than the G.L. debacle.
Now, having said that, I will repeat what I have said since May. They are not repeat NOT blowing this lead.
now off to the blender as I try to reach my goal of truly being in Margaritaville.

Exactly. That's why clinching at Fenway sounds great. It's the clinching part.
OK, I need to vent here since I cannot at home. ARRGGGH>>>>>SHIT!
I HATE THE YANKEES! I WANT THE DIVISION!! I AM MAD!
OK, I feel better. THANKS!

took the words out of my typing hands...
if we lose the division in the final week of the season, i will be heartsick. i feel sick just thinking of it.
knowing we are in the postseason does not comfort me.
we must must must must must must must must must win the division.
must.
did i mention that i hate joba the cunt?

Worse than 2003?!?!?! That sounds beyond nuts to me. Way, way beyond!
They are in the playoffs, but may not have HFA, which we know doesn't usually mean much at all.
Once in, all bets are off. Whether you finished 1st or 2nd. Anything can happen either way.
None of the 4 AL teams are a huge favourite, though whoever wins the pennant should whip the NL champ.
So the Yankees win will end what will be looked back upon as a pretty bad day for the Red Sox.
- Sox lose
- Yankees win and are 1.5 GB. Magic number remains at 6.
- Indians win. Red Sox no longer at the top of the AL.
+ Tigers win
- Yankees magic number is now 2, so it really doesn't really matter what the Tigers do anymore.
- Angels are leading Seattle in the 6th, though Seattle is only down 3-2.
+ Mets just beat the Marlins in 11 innings. At least it might annoy some Yankees fans.
=========================
- Tim Wakefield didn't pitch well today. 5 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
- Tavarez wasn't good either. 1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R
+ Ellsbury continues his consistent hitting.
- Offense was relatively quiet today, though. 4 runs on 6 hits.
- Mirabelli goes 0 for 3 once again.
- So does Hinske.
- Ortiz takes the Ted Williams approach, trying to bust through the overshift while there's a wide open hole on the left side that is an automatic single+ in a key inning.
+ BRYAN COREY. 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, K.
+ NO MORE DEVIL RAYS.
+ No more Peña, Young, Upton, Navarro, Kazmir, and no more Joe Maddon.
+ NO MORE ROAD GAMES.
+ Off day tomorrow, then it's back to Fenway to finish the regular season.
- Yankees and Indians both play tomorrow, which means they could tack on a half-game against the Red Sox.
+ Or they could lose, and the magic number would go down to 5.
+ Yankees face A.J. Burnett tomorrow at 1:05.
+ Schilling pitches on Tuesday against Dan Meyer, who is 0-2 nd has an 8.62 ERA.
+ The Red Sox are in the playoffs, and nothing can change that.
did i mention that i hate joba the cunt?
actually, what you said was "i hate the cunt", which could mean something else entirely.
not to mention theo and tito have gotten them to the playoffs 3 times in the last four years, jeez.
how spoiled we've become.
Thankfully, Henry et al. do not run their businesses according to "outcry".
We see Oakland for 2 -- and miss Haren.
We see Minnesota for 4 -- and miss Santana.
This is good.
redsock said...

ha, nice try.
but may not have HFA, which we know doesn't usually mean much at all.
While home field advantage does not mean a lot, see last five years where six wild card teams have made the WS and three have won it, if they lose HFA in the last week and they get eliminated on the road. There will be a huge out cry. Especially if they lose in the ALCS a game 7 in NY.
I think whatever happens this season for the Red Sox, neither Theo nor Tito are going anywhere, because the Red Sox have a very, VERY good looking team for 2008. The 2008 Red Sox, as they can look right now, appear to be an even larger force than the 2007 Sox.
Next season could be a deciding season for Theo and/or Francona, but that's only if the team just sucks the entire season and doesn't make the playoffs.
I can't see any big changes for the Red Sox management or front office because of this season.
I don't think anyone's job will be riding on that part of it, though.
FUCKING FUCK THAT WAS FUCKING FRUSTRATING
yeah, it'll take a lot for someone's job to be in jeopardy at this point.
The 2008 Red Sox, as they can look right now, appear to be an even larger force than the 2007 Sox
Agreed! I also don't think that Theo will be gone if they don't make the WS or even Francona, but there will be an out cry.
Now having said that, I will repeat what I said earlier They are not blowing the division.
The 2007 is very simple to understand:
The Yankees slumped early, then they got hot. The Red Sox got hot early, then they slumped.
With one week to go, we are at the place where we thought we'd be - both teams fighting for the East crown, 1.5 games apart.
It's that simple.

How dare you bring logic into the discussion :).
It may be that simple, but it is still heart-breaking. It just is too hard to accept that we were up by at least 5-6 games through almost the entire season and that now we could end up in second place. I know the numbers, but it just stings to think we could once again be taken over by the Yankees. Of course, they now play the Devil Rays and Baltimore, two weak teams, weaker than Oakland and Minnesota. I just am feeling sick. I will recover, however, and come back on Tuesday, hoping they win the next 6 games. Or at least three with the MFY losing three.
At least now I know it wasn't me missing the whole game that made things right, cause it sure didn't help today.
Oh well - we're still AHEAD, not chasing. Maybe TB will pull a Blue Jay out of their ass, perform way above themselves, and play spoiler for us.

Absolutely. No argument there.
But for those of us who care deeply about winning the division, this is a stressful week.
As Sosock says, we're ahead, not behind, and that's a hell of a lot better.
But for me personally, I didn't give a shit about the wild card last week, and I don't give a shit about it now.
Consensus - If Theo and Francona don't win the WS and lose the division they better pack their bags because the out cry would be worse than the G.L. debacle.
That is ludicrous.
