G159: Twins 5, Red Sox 4

Bad news everywhere.

Boston's ninth inning rally falls short (box) and the Yankees beat the Devil Rays 3-1. Up by 2 with 3 to play.

It initially looked like the Sox would rout Bonser, as he threw 39 pitches in an eight-batter first inning, allowing three hits and two runs. But he recovered and lasted five innings (5-6-3-2-2, 97). Beckett was not sharp at all (6-10-5-0-6, 99), allowing the Twins to put their leadoff man on base in each of the first five innings. He also gave up solo home runs to Cuddyer and Jones.

Boston trailed 5-3 after six innings. Varitek hit a solo shot in the eighth and, with two outs, Hinske and Lugo both singled. Joe Nathan came in from the pen and got Pedroia to pop out to first base. In the ninth, Moss doubled to left and Ortiz walked (Tiz also singled twice, doubled and homered, with 2 RS and 2 RBI). Lowell moved the runners to second and third on a grounder to first, and Nathan walked Drew intentionally to load the bases.

Varitek fell behind 0-2, fouled off a couple of pitches and brought the count back to 2-2 before striking out on a slider down and in. Youkilis pinch-hit for Kielty and fanned on three pitches, the last one a check swing on a high fastball.

Okajima pitched the Twins eighth. He threw 14 pitches. Morneau flew to right on an 0-1 pitch. Cuddyer hit a first-pitch single to center and stole second, but Jeemer whiffed both Jones (bbffs) and Lecroy (bbfcbs).

In Tampa, the Yankees pounced on the Rays pen and broke a 1-1 tie as soon as Kazmir left the game (6-3-1-0-10, 100).

***

Boof Bonser (5.09, 87 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.14, 145 ERA+)

A win tonight, coupled with a Yankee loss in Tampa (Hughes/Kazmir), clinches the East.

Game thread here.

Ish - run doesn't score when last out is a force play.

Three hours later... here I am.

About time too, we need some more optimism.

Sarah Gates said...

Yay! Laura's here, we're in to the Twinkies' pen, all will soon be well with the world.

redsock said...

pee-wee -- let's go.

Torii Hunter, you are temporarily benched from my Girls' Team.

Ish - run doesn't score when last out is a force play.

Gotcha.

Little things ya learn everyday, I guess.

Amy said...

Manny, BE Manny.

ish said...

The Red Sox have hit balls very hard tonight. Just... at people.

redsock said...

tiz needs a triple for the cycle.

L-girl said...

I'm always learning new things about baseball. That's part of why I love it so much.

L-girl said...

I was just thinking... It took me 3 hours to connect to the internet tonight. I should have started trying as soon as we got home. Who knew.

Being!! Yeah, here we go.

s1c said...

Get a run here and keep them from scoring and we are getting set up for another of Flo's walk offs.

Lets go Papi!!!

Amy said...

OK, one on. Can Papi hit two tonight? I will also take the triple to give him the cycle. I will, in fact, take anything that gets him on base.

Sarah Gates said...

Yeah, I was thinking that too, RS. Love to see him get it...

ish said...

So now we've got the tying run to the plate, one out, and that tying run just happens to be Ortiz.

Here we go, boys.

L-girl said...

I've never seen anyone hit for the cycle. This would be an excellent time to change that!

ish said...

Rain getting a little steadier.

Amy said...

The rules of baseball are more complex than the tax code. I love that complexity.

ish said...

I'll take a Single...

Time for the Good Doctor to make a house call.

redsock said...

FLO: 4-for-4.

s1c said...

Time for a House Call!!

Amy said...

No triple, but like I said, I will take it. Now the doctor needs to come through with the cure.

L-girl said...

Yeah, Papi!

The rules of baseball are more complex than the tax code.

But only half as complex as cricket! Or so I am told.

Amy said...

Cricket, heh? I once saw that played in Bermuda and was totally perplexed.

Sarah Gates said...

Time to blow it in Tampa, JtC.

L-girl said...

Come on Lowell, fill our Rx...

redsock said...

Slowell with the GIDP.

Amy said...

Oh Fuck.

s1c said...

Frag me, another GIDP by the Doctor. Nothing in this game is going right.

Colin said...

Doc,

What...the...fuck?

L-girl said...

This is annoying. But it will just make the late-inning comeback sweeter.

(As long as we win, they can't catch us... as long as win...)

s1c said...

Ok, we need to see the good jeemer tonight.

Look, you have been eliminated. You are not going to the play offs, now please roll over and play dead.

Sarah Gates said...

I'm not enjoying the Met Collapse that seems to be happening here. If I can't have a nice, Yankee-free October like I wanted, I would at least like them to not be the only NY team playing.

redsock said...

rays - 1st and 2nd, 2 outs, young(?) up.

It's Upton.

Amy said...

My poor son in law. And poor Pedro. Sounds like he did well, but team couldn't score.

Sarah Gates said...

Oh yeah! Tek!!

Joe Nathan warming for the Twinkies.

Amy said...

Laura, you notice the new beard? I think it has changed his luck.

redsock said...

Time for Hinske to become a True Red Sox.

ish said...

Castiglione says Joe Nathan has been "spectacular" this year.

nick said...

Oh sure. GDGD. 3 pitch K and you all are cheering 'bout some dong.

Ding Dong, we draw one on the line. alright!

L-girl said...

Laura, you notice the new beard? I think it has changed his luck.

I didn't notice (sorry), but whatever works.

Amy said...

Come on, Eric. DO something good. PLEASE. YES!!

L-girl said...

OMG! Hinske gets a hit!! Nice timing on that, Natasha.

ish said...

Alright, Hinske!

That assures at least Pedroia to start the 9th.

But let's just have Slügo plate the run!

L-girl said...

Castiglione says Joe Nathan has been "spectacular" this year.

It was so great listening to the Sox on the radio the last two nights. A real treat.

Amy said...

Lugo, keep it going.

ish said...

CORNERS FOR PEDROIA!!!

Amy said...

Wow, you go, Lugo!

L-girl said...

SLUUUUUUGO!!! Yes!!

Keep it going now...

Sarah Gates said...

Oh yeah! Well done Julio!

s1c said...

1st and third and Papi will bat in the ninth if not sooner. WOOO WOOO

ish said...

It was so great listening to the Sox on the radio the last two nights. A real treat.

Even with the Manny hater, Dave O'Brien doing the game with Joe?

To me, he's a different broadcaster when he's doing ESPN. I mean, I know it's always different on the radio, but he's the ESPN national guy when he's doing TV (obviously), but he's a real Pro when he does the radio, imo.

nick said...

who here likes baseball?

ish said...

ATL 4, PHI 6, FINAL.

There is now a tie for the NL East, and they don't necessarily have the wild card to fall back on. Wow.

L-girl said...

Ish, I agree completely. O'Brien is great on the radio - totally different than his national Fox or ESPN persona. Many announcers are like that - most notably CHB.

I thought they were great. I was wondering what everyone was complaining about, but Allan told me that's about Geffner (sp?), who wasn't on.

s1c said...

Oh yeah, a base hit scores the winning run now!!!

ish said...

Moss on deck.

Moss called back, Youk on deck!!!

L-girl said...

nick, no one :)

ish said...

Downpouring now.

L-girl said...

Pop-up - damn!!

s1c said...

Frag it. I smell rain delay coming here.

Amy said...

Damn. One more shot for one more (or two more) runs

ish said...

The heorics will have to wait.

Youks, Flo, and the Good Doctor due up in the 9th.

But we may have to wait a while to get there. It's really coming down.

ish said...

MDC pitching, the rain has slackened a little bit.

L-girl said...

Nope, no rain delay, just some field tidying.

ish said...

Moss still playing in LF. Youk will probably still PH in the 9th.

ish said...

The Braves have been eliminated with the loss tonight.

L-girl said...

MDC's been great lately. I feel confident with him on the mound.

L-girl said...

In Tampa, bottom 9th, man on 2nd, 2 outs.

ish said...

No clinching tonight.

Yankees win.

L-girl said...

Ok, that's that then. Now we need the walkoff.

Sarah Gates said...

Final in Tampa. Sure wish they'd left Kazmir in there.

ish said...

MDC!!!!

Very, very good outing.

Moss (Youk PH?), Ortiz, Lowell.

L-girl said...

Anybody mention Bartlett for the all-fruit team? Along with Daryl Strawberry and Bob Lemon, among others. There's an Apple and a McIntosh in there, I know.

L-girl said...

Rocky Cherry...

ish said...

No pinch-hit.

Hmm.

L-girl said...

So it is Moss. Where's Yook?

Anyway, come on, Moss, get on base...

ish said...

MOSS HITS A LEAD-OFF DOUBLE!!!!!

L-girl said...

Beautiful!!! Give this man a nickname!

s1c said...

Time for Papi Magic!!!

redsock said...

don says moss singled in his first ab. that was manny, don. come on.

PAPI TIME!!!!!!

L-girl said...

Let's go Papi! Pick this team up on your back and carry us there!!!!

Sarah Gates said...

Moss! Well done man! I was just typing something about being sad not to see Youk, but I'll shut up now.

Amy said...

Leadoff man on, Papi, bring him home. PLEASE.

nick said...

A rolling stone....

ish said...

So now it's Tizzle to go for the walk-off...izzle.

L-girl said...

I thought of that too, Nick, but I'm a huge Stones fan, I can't give that to just anyone.

ish said...

3-0 pitch.

Green light.

L-girl said...

(Also a huge Muddy Waters fan, more reason not to call him that.)

Amy said...

Not giving him anything to hit...I am worrying about Lowell and the DPs.

s1c said...

Unintentional intentional walk it looks like to me.

C'mon make a mistake nathan.

L-girl said...

It's up to the doctor now. He can do it. He WILL do it.

(Please please please no GDP)

ish said...

Ortiz walks. Winning run is on. And heeeere's Doc.

We can forget alllll about the tough night he's had if he comes through here.

Royce Clayton running for Ortiz.

nick said...

I gotcha on the stones, but it makes me think of the Temptations more...

Good to see 'im on, but would've loved me some long ball.

ish said...

They're looking for a bunt at the corners.

Amy said...

Come on, Mike. Be the MVP.

Amy said...

At least no DP. And runners moved over.

ish said...

1 out, the winning run to third.

That's as good as a sacrifice.

A fly ball can win the game.

L-girl said...

At least it's only one out. Time for Mr On Fire!

ish said...

They're going to walk Drew and go after Varitek.

redsock said...

up to the captain.

i wanna see some tangibles here.

Amy said...

Oh, up to Tek....come on, new beard. Do your magic.

s1c said...

Alright, J.D. Drew, this is your chance here. Time to shut up the doubters.

Frag an IBB.

Up to tek, who, oh yeah sucks with the bases loaded.

not feeling good here.

Sarah Gates said...

Let's go, new beard Tek!

ish said...

Hit it to the outfield. Hit it to the outfield. Outfield. Outfield.

Amy said...

I am dying here, just dying.

ish said...

Youks on deck.

L-girl said...

just hit it out of the infield...

Amy said...

Dont swing at SHIT.

nick said...

in the absolute stillness a book just jumped off my coffee table. couldn't stand the tension.

L-girl said...

we will accept a walk here...

ish said...

He won't walk.

Amy said...

FUCK

L-girl said...

K. Why am I not surprised.

(Ish, I knew that. Just hoping.)

ish said...

Big sigh for Joe Nathan. The tension rises for Red Sox fans.

No more sac fly here. Gotta get a hit.

s1c said...

Up to Youk.

redsock said...

dickhead lecroy with the double fist pump after the tek K.

Amy said...

YOUK. Hope the wrist is ready.

Sir Jahmez said...

Tek - way to suck.

ish said...

(Ish, I knew that. Just hoping.)

Same here.

L-girl said...

FUCK

fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck

Amy said...

ARRRGGGHHH

s1c said...

fragging twins. That was so weak by both tek and youk.

redsock said...

hey lecroy you asshat, your team sucks. it has won nothing. put your fist pumps away.

ish said...

Well then.

We'll try it again tomorrow night. The Yankees will go to Baltimore.

L-girl said...

DAMN!!!! Both bad results tonight.

Crap. Magic number didn't move at all.

Sarah Gates said...

Sigh. That was rough.

Sir Jahmez said...

CRAP. How can you get a leadoff double and let them get away without a whimper? LAME.

ish said...

Things I take away from this game:

+ Varitek, even after that big K, has still been well improved. After all, we would have been down by 2 runs if it wasn't for his dong.

- Red Sox still have problems leaving men on base.

+ A lot of balls hit hard for the Sox tonight, but they were just hit at people.

- Manny is still looking good at the plate.

- Beckett didn't pitch very well, but he didn't need to, really. Usually occurs on a start of this nature.

- Magic number doesn't move.

+ Okajima looked good.

+ MDC looked great.

ish said...

CRAP. How can you get a leadoff double and let them get away without a whimper? LAME.

I'd take that over the Red Sox going quietly in the 9th.

+ At least they're showing they can start a rally. There are so many different permutations and possibilities of what can happen in that situation, it doesn't always work out. The key is starting the rally, because if you don't start a rally, there's no rally.

Crap!
I get home, late, pull up the old GDGD and see we're down by 1 in the 9th. But lo and behold we have bases juiced and only 1 out!
Hot Damn, I think, I'm just in time to see us pull off a great come-back win!
But noooooooo, Tek Ks and then Yook follows suit - SHIT!
Tek's K was the Big One. All he has to do is make decent contact and we're tied. Choke and Poke dammit! Yook was forced to swing for the hit.
Oh well, try again tomorrow :(

Woti-woti said...

Sox won't get any help from the Orioles. Crunch time. I think we all know it will come down to Sunday. A 3-game winning streak wouldn't go amiss, though.

tim said...

Dammit! I go watch The Office and come home to this!

MFY won, we lost - that makes me a saaaad panda.

Amy said...

I am still fuming here. I am reposting a post I deleted because I couldn't figure out how to edit it. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the next two games, which I will miss due to the bar mitzvah. I am hoping that there will be a large screen somewhere at the party on Saturday, but doubt it even though the kid and his family are huge Sox fans. Oh, well, keep the faith. I hope they clinch before you see or hear from me again.

L-girl said...

Tim, your choice of viewing material on a possible clinching night is highly suspect.

L-girl said...

Amy, I have a feeling you'll be receiving regular updates from several men who have snuck radios into the Bar Mitzvah. What September or October Bar Mitzvah would be complete without it? I've attended them in Brooklyn, sure New England can do no less.

Have fun and keep the faith. The next time we hear from you, we'll all be celebrating our division title.

L-girl said...

I think we all know it will come down to Sunday.

I don't. I expected it tonight, and I'll expect it tomorrow.

L-girl said...

I'd take that over the Red Sox going quietly in the 9th.

Ish, I agree. I think you just put your finger on what bothers me about the people who moan about LOB. It's frustrating to leave men on, but I'd rather see a rally started then 1-2-3.

It wasn't a bad game, just a bad outcome. Tomorrow, a better outcome.

Amy said...

Yes, Laura, I am sure you are right. I might even sneak my cellphone in to check the score now and then. I would be very surprised if the parents don't apologize for having the celebration during the last weekend of the season! Like I said, they are all crazy fans, and we have watched many games with them and their kids over the years. In fact, we were there for the Pedro-Zimmer showdown. It was quite interesting to see these kids get really upset to see grown men fighting over a game.

Anyway, enjoy the games, everyone. And I sure hope Tek doesn't get up with bases loaded again.

tim said...

Tim, your choice of viewing material on a possible clinching night is highly suspect.

I have an exam tomorrow, so my choices were either watch the game, then Office at 12am on the west feed (4 hours of studying gone) or just watch the office at 9 (1 hour of studying gone)

Believe me, if this were any other non-exam night I'd be all over it.

If the M's can win this one tonight, I'd feel a little less bad about the loss tonight. We'll see how that plays out.

Colin said...

Look the big killer seems to be overconfidence. Everyone puts their chips on Beckett and he busted, so that's why I like to take every game with cautious optimism...seems to make me feel better.

CLE 2, SEA 4, FINAL.

Boo-yah. Still holding identical records.

OK, you're off the hook. ;-)

Good luck on your test, I hope it went well. I know it's hard to concentrate on exams when your team needs you.
