Dice was superb (8-6-2-2-8, 119). The Twins' two runs came in the seventh inning. Bot needed only six pitches to slam the door.
Tizzle remained white hot, with a double (#53), single and home run (#35). Lowell singled, doubled and drove in three. Drew (double) and Yook (single) drove in one run apiece.
In Baltimore, the Orioles got three runs off Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth (Jay Payton's three-run triple tying the game) and one in the bottom of the tenth off Edwar Ramirez (Melvin Mora's bases-loaded squeeze bunt) and win 10-9.

Orioles - 011 040 003 1 - 10 20 0

Let's try that again: Red Sox W + MFY L = East.

Nobody's doused John Henry yet.
HENRY: It was a year ago last August that we started planning this season.
What stood out to you about this team this year?
HENRY: There seemed to be a quiet determination in this team.
WOOOOOOOOOT!!!!
This has been a VERY incredible night!
First place from April 18th through to the end.
GOODNIGHT EVERYONE!
(Papelbon's wearing a Bud Light box on his head.)
Over 15 minutes into Sportscenter and they are talking fucking football, college football, and still no mention of the Red Sox. WTF!
That is what I wanted to see!!!
Watched the first inning of tonights game then went to sleep, got up saw the win for us and saw the Yanks leading 9-6 going to the bottom of the 9th and figured game was over.
Good to see the O's help us out, but I was never worried. If you want a collapse look to the Mets.
See you for the Saturday thread!!!
THEO: When you have the Yankees in your division, I told someone earlier, it seems like you have a stalker.
We never went through a long stretch where we played bad ball.
Teener: Theo, you're a little dry, so I'm going to release you to the masses.
Players dancing on the field. Lots of Bud Light flowing in, on and all over players.
I don't get it. We're tied with CLE with 2 to go. How can the magic number for home field throughout be just 1? It's 2, right? If we win just one and CLE wins two, they get home field throughout. Or am I missing something?
Coco Crisp: This is the best time of my life right now.
Coco--This is the best time of my life right now.
Tim Wakefield just plucked a kiss on Varitek's cheek. Awwww. Man love.
Timlin dumps all over Tek and kisses him on the cheek. Sweet.
JOY LOVE TO ALL! This is fucking amazing, this summer has been the best for baseball in my life, thanks alot to JOY and being able to rationally discuss every aspect of every game with like-minded friends. An experience I've been lacking my entire life, and now they've finally done it! Led all season, a tense final couple of weeks but they pulled 'er out! The GHOSTS of Red Sox Past helped out a little bit, Payton, if I may say so myself....
And for it all to happen on one of my favorite plays in baseball; the suicide squeeze! I love you Avian Flu Birds, I love you Joy Nation and I love you Red Sox!
Now lets kick some fucking ass in October, bitches!
Red sox, red sox!
(Took me this long to post due to a lil bit of damage control from waking up the girlfriend, as well as dealing with the asshole dog that lives in this house...most un-friendly asswipe I've ever seen. Worse than a fucking CAT. And that's bad)
WOOOOO! PARTY ALL THE TIME! [/eddie murphy]
Whew, glad that's over, .I would have liked to see Manny stick around..........
Fuck Joe Torre to , He wants to rest all his players when he could still get home field advantage, that killed the Yankees last year, and i hope his smugness bites him in the ass again.....
Nice celebration,I wonder if Jere was still there?
Schilling's standing around, trying to find someone to hit next. LMAO.
Boxes of champagne lying on the field. Dice-K's running around scared, telling one of his Japanese reporters it's very cold! At least, I think.
Francona gives Pedroia a big hug. Pedoria lay his head on Francona's shoulder. Like a son and father, just after Francona gave Clay Buchholz a big hug, as well.
Or am I missing something?
If Cleveland and Boston end with identical records, Boston automatically gets full home-field advantage because of the tiebreaker (season series)... Red Sox 5-2 for the season series.
WE DID IT!!!!
they keep saying the magic number for the best record is 1. how is that?
we have the same record as the indians, and we both have two games left right?
Tim, be careful what you say about cats and dogs. Lots of cat and dog lovers here! :)
Ish, was that Wake or Timlin? Looked like Timlin was doing the pouring, but might have been Wake kissing!
Also, I like how you and I picked the same Coco quote.
One of the great things about tonight was my being totally convinced the Yankees were going to win their game. Mariano Rivera comes in to get a save with a 3 run lead, and then the O's TIE IT UP. Mo blows the save! Then all of a sudden, holy crap!
Tim Wakefield just plucked a kiss on Varitek's cheek. Awwww. Man love.
Such man love is encouraged when the Sox are involved with the AL East, champagne, and celebration bitches. Oh and Pap with Bud Light box on his head = awesome.
Westcoastsox, we outplayed CLE in the season series, so if we tie them at the end, we win the best record.
There's nothing like it. this is my third time and it gets better and better every time. to celebrate like this on the field is the reason i'm here.
it reminds me a lot of hockey in montreal.
i've played against these guys for a few months and that's why i'm here now. they're champions.
-Eric Gagné
nixon, everybody is wrong. the magic number to get best record is two. only question now is whether we rest or go for it. I say rest, and let the second team win it.
but we have clinched at least #2 in the AL, so we'll be opening at home against the Angels.
Tim, be careful what you say about cats and dogs. Lots of cat and dog lovers here! :)
Oh, I know...I love dogs too. Cats, not so much. But I realize that cats aren't as lovey as dogs, their more independent, and as a result, more "bitchy" I tend to find...
But this dog at this house is just an asshole any way you slice it.
DR. DOUBLES: This is the most satisfying moment. This is just another step to where we want to go.
Biggest surprise?
Getting the major contributions from the young guys, like Pedroia, Pap... but everybody being healthy--we came prepared from spring training. I love the champagne, even though it's cold. And my cigar [just went out, after someone doused him with more champagne]... isn't it illegal to smoke in fenway park?
Alex Cora has taken over the controls and they're playing their clubhouse music.
Somewhere in the scrum, Papelbon lost his pants and it's down to boxors for him now. And it appears that shirt is shrinking more and more.
This is exactly why I love baseball so much.
Hazel Mae: Fenway, partying like it's 1995.
How about that BUNT, huh? Melvin Mora! Dropped it down the third base line as the runner darted for home. Betemit got his hand on it, but there was nothing he could do.
Amy, we have the same record as Cleveland with 2 to play. If we win one, as they are saying on TV we need to do to clinch best record, we end up with a record of 96-66. If Cleveland wins both of their remaining games, they are 97-65 and get best record.
It's a nit, but I hate it when they get things like that wrong.
Yes, if we and CLE end up with the same record, we get it.
thanx for the updates, ish...
i would, uh, also like a copy of this DVD...
Allan/Laura - would it be possible to get this one after you receive it from Cakey, as well as the top 10 D/J moments? (and any more you may have)
I was thinking it may be easier since you're so close to me in Canada...if you could burn them that'd be cool...even if I could borrow them for a week or so...anyway let me know! (PM on Threadsox would probably be the best)
Thanks and night all!
yeah i understand about the tie breaker factor, westcaostsox. thanks.
the magic number is TWO. we have two games left to tie with cleveland...or finish with a better record.
Yeah, I am confused about the Cleveland thing now. But too tired to start doing math.
Time to sleep. Good night, everyone. Enjoy the last two games, as I will not be on line, but will perhaps be around before or after. Thanks for making tonight another fun one.
Of course, who cares? MFY will beat CLE in first round, and we'll have home field against MFY no matter what.
Unbelievable, MFY have gone 8-3 over their last 11 and it wasn't good enough. Beckett's win over them on 9/15 was HUGE.
oh, one last post:
fuck you, murray chass!!!
Someone on SOSH grabbed a screencap of Paps with the bud lite box on his head: http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/7923/roflbonnd6.jpg
I came back to finish reading the updates from Fenway. Awesome. I can't wait to see Pap in his boxers and a box on his head!
What a night. What a season!!!!
Good night again!
Nice.
Tim's summary had me LMAO. Thanks to our hosts. And I gotta say it was more (less) than Papelbon in his boxers... We're talking jock strap-- I saw Papelbutt.
still--a dead perfect bunt.
Good night all!
So happy to join this game thread for tonight, lots of enthusiasm.
And, uh, Cakey, I PMed you, but I'm putting it here for you to see tomorrow morning, too: yes, I would please like to get a copy of that celebration.
Man, the only thing ruining tonight was Flower's death on Meerkat Manor.
"Nice celebration,I wonder if Jere was still there?"
Yeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!
Took lots of pix. I actually dreamed days ago of winning our game, then watching the Yanks lose to clinch the division. So I was there just waiting for them to put the Yanks game up on the board, and amazingly, they did. What a night. I love you all.
I didn't get to read this whole thread, but about playoff tix: Nix33, the Sox never went through Ticketmaster. And there is always a contest for the chance to buy, all the teams do it. I won the Phillies second chance drawing and the Indians' one. Gave the Indians code to a friend who lives near Cleveland and he will get to root against the Yanks in ALDS game 5 if it goes that far.
The Yanks actually do put them on sale to the public (as well as having the contest, I think), that was today at 10 AM for all ALDS and ALCS games. A very limited amount, I'm sure, but they do have a huge stadium.
Hope this helps,
Jere, fan of the AL East Champs.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to read this whole thread over so I can believe it's really true.
I was out tonight, but could not help but chime in on this thread.
Man, Rivera MELTS DOWN. I mean bad.
A great way to clinch.
Well done! And hurrah!
JoS page loads on the night we clinch the East:
