Wake Set for Thursday; Clay Moved To Pen

The Herald reports that Tim Wakefield threw in the bullpen this afternoon and "experienced no problems with his cranky back, which clears him to face the Orioles on Thursday".

It was also announced that Clay Buchholz will be moved to the bullpen. He has about 15 innings left before he hits the ceiling the organization set for him this season. Terry Francona: "It's been proven with young pitchers if you're increasing their [yearly] increments too much, you're putting them unnecessarily at risk."

If he is not getting another start or two, does this mean Buchholz will be on the post-season roster? Perhaps. The Sox may use him for an inning every few days to get him used to the relief role and then extend him slightly (if necessary) in October.

Devern Hansack is likely the final September call-up.

Hansack was described as "closing the books on Sept. call-ups" on Sox.com
Oh, hi
Just got in. Watched the game at a bar with a dish.
Couple of interesting comments tonight.
I really am going to find time to relate my "most exciting Red Sox game" story on my blog. (which so far has not-a-damn-thing on it)
To date (until this weekend) it's the only Sox game I've seen live, but it was a doozy - one for the record books, literally - in Yankee Stadium w/Pedro pitching, no less.
I'm thinking this weekend I'll get to see Dice on Saturday and Beckett on Sunday. I was glad to see Wake will be up on Thur. and am hoping nothing happens to change the order.

it's a shame clay won't get at least one more start. the johnny vander meer record is one for the ages and clay should at least get a chance to try for it.

It's not that easy to reach legendary status with the Red Sox. They will not give you every opportunity. That way it really means something.

I would assume back-to-back no-nos would still be back-to back, even if they weren't in the same season.
But you're right, it wouldn't seem like the same feat.

Do we really have to worry about whether or not Clay Buchholz will have a shot at Vander Meer's record? It's not as if it's a realistic goal, for him or anyone!

No, but it would be fun. That said, I don't want to see him pitch more than an inning for 10 days, and i don't want to see an inning for 5.

He's extremely good and exciting, but at this point it's not really worth the risk to his future.

Finally watched the 9th inning of the no-hitter...brought a tear to my eye, literally.

Simply amazing.

I had a tear as well when I watched the players mobbing Clay at the end. And Big Papi didn't even drill me in the nose with his shoulder.
