G1: Red Sox 6, Athletics 5 (10)

Red Sox - 000 003 001 2 - 6 11 0
Athletics - 200 002 000 1 - 5 7 0
Matsuzaka surrendered a line-drive home run to Ellis on his 3rd pitch of the game and had early control problems (though at times, he was getting seriously squeezed). He threw 30 pitches in each of the first two innings, walking four, hitting one, and tossing a wild pitch. Oakland stranded two runners in the first and left the bases loaded in the second.

Dice (5-2-2-5-6, 95) recovered, retiring 10 of his last 11 batters, allowing only one ball out of the infield.

Boston grabbed the lead in the sixth. Pedroia doubled to right, Youkilis walked and Manny drove brought them in with a double down the left field line. Ramirez scored on a single from Moss, who got the last-minute start after Drew's back tightened up.

Kyle Snyder relieved Dice in the 6th and promptly gave the lead back as Crosby singled and Hannahan donged. Javier Lopez came in and got out of the inning quickly. Tito gave the 8th to Bryan Corey, a move which paid off. Ellsbury had to make a leaping catch at the center field wall on Brown's leadoff drive, banging his shoulder a bit, but Corey got the next two A's on weak grounders. That let Jeemer take the 9th and Bot the 10th.

In the ninth, two outs away from defeat, Moss hit his first major league home run -- down the right field line off Huston Street -- to tie the game. And the Sox tagged Street again in the 10th. Lugo reached on an infield single to third and was bunted over by Pedroia. Yook fanned and Ortiz was intentionally walked. Ramirez came through again, with a double off the wall in right center. Four RBI for Manny today. He watched it for awhile from the plate, but still slide easily into second.

Snuffer wasn't his snuffin' self in the bottom of the 10th. He walked Barton and Brown cracked a one-out double. Barton scored, cutting the lead to 6-5, but Brown was caught in a rundown between second and third -- 9-4-3-5-6-3 -- for an important out. Crosby and Hannahan both singled, putting the winning run on first, but Suzuki grounded out 3-1 to end the game.

i can't beleive its only 2-0

They mentioned that Jack Cust struck out 164 times last year.

They didn't mention that he only racked up 395 AB's.

If Cust plays a full season, he will DEMOLISH the strikeout record.

And yet he'll still be a very valuable player.

reed's zone for dice is the size of an aspirin.

Joe Grav said...

Dice escapes again, can he settle down now?

tim said...

WHAT! 200 comment pages???

Jere said...

weird, 200 commments breaks the bank. did you make it do that?

ish said...

Seems as though Dice-K still seems shy of the strike zone from gameday live.....

some of the pitches were so bad they'd go off your computer screen.

but, no matter.

Joe Grav said...

Time to wake up, boys! Let's get a run.

Jere said...

we will score runs this inning

Joe Grav said...

Oh shush Remy, everyone pays for all of your crap... it would be expensive for me to go, but not you

tim said...

Remy: "The whole city's like Times Square - but clean"

tim said...

No red sleeve for LBJ?

James said...

Remy is talking about how interesting and amazing Japan is.

Yesterday Rob Bradford said on the radio that Remy *literally* hadn't left his hotel in 4 days.

L-girl said...

Yay, there's my boy!

(Weird stuff we comments. We didn't do it. Blogger issue, I guess.)

Joe Grav said...

Hey, Minneapolis is clean too... I've noticed that almost every place is clean, except Boston, Philadelphia, DC and to a lesser extent NY haha

redsock said...

no, i did nothing. must be a new blogger thing. maybe it'll load quicker.

L-girl said...

When was the last time Remy was in Times Square, do you think? 1978?

tim said...

Good start for Julio.

Joe Grav said...

Leave it to Lugo to get it started. DPed time.

SoSock said...

Jeez, 180 pitches already!
(well,....close)
Dice is off to a slow start.
Glad he settled down for that last one, maybe he can just go ahead and get a little fired up now.
BTW - g'morning all!

James said...

Does Lugo take off? I can't remember if Suzuki is supposed to be any good as a baserunnerkiller.

Jack Marshall said...

On the good side, I'm probably glad that I can't see how Dice-K is pitching. On the other side, can you BELIEVE that the DIRECT TV people tell me that it just happens, with 6 people at my house at 6 AM to watch the game, that they pick now to have a "problem" with the ESPN signal signal? ARRGGHH!!!

I'm going out to kill them now---keep track of the game for me, Laura. Look for me in the news---the bald guy in cuffs for slaughtering the DIRECT TV staff. The wink will be for you....

ish said...

lyndon looked genuinely surprised by that strike call.

meanwhile lugo gets a hit. i love how his eyes pop out of his head when he swings the bat.

lugo will be an interesting one this year.

Joe Grav said...

60 pitches for Dice, 27 for Blanton :O

James said...

I have to ask Joe:

What parts of New York have you been to that are lessunclean than Boston?

Coming from someone who spent a lot of time last year in Harlem, I'm perplexed.

Jere said...

"Look for me in the news---the bald guy in cuffs for slaughtering the DIRECT TV staff."

50 bucks says baseball causes me to kill before you.

tim said...

Yesterday Rob Bradford said on the radio that Remy *literally* hadn't left his hotel in 4 days.

lmao.

i love how they showed those clips of him interviewing japanese people..."and these ladies wanted nothing to do with american men...at least, sportscasters"

i think japan needs a big, sweaty dong.

L-girl said...

I'm on it, Jack. Maybe Amy can represent you.

let's go, possum chin.

I didn't think Boston was that bad. I liked it.

tim said...

Nice! That was actually way closer than I thought it would be though.

James said...

Chavez would have made that a routine out...

Maybe not.

Amy said...

Good morning, everyone. Happy opening day! I have to go to work so no time to game thread now, but I have been watching since the second. Hope DiceK starts finding the plate more easily.

Go, YOOOOK! OK, I will stay and see what Papi does.

L-girl said...

Hi Amy! I was wondering where you were during Tek's 1st AB.

Jere said...

oh, he was defending? I tried to figure out lessunclean and with my math skills that became just "clean". I still don't know what's going on. Regardless, yes, NYC not a filthy stinkhole a la Taxi Driver '76. (Although that still made me wanna go there.)

redsock said...

blanton - long wait effin' with his control. dice = genius.

tim said...

PAPI SMASH TIME

This gave me an idea. Since their in Japan, can we call Manny and Papi the Super Smash Bros?

redsock said...

you can.

ish said...

well now i'm off to do something i've never done before: bundle up, put my gloves on, go out to the car, start it up, crank the heat on full blast (including the heated seat)... turn on the red sox game... and drive my dad to work.

22° out in southern maine this morning.

could be worse.

tim said...

Excuse my english there, wow. You can tell it's early...Since THEY'RE in Japan.

James said...

Hey, I love New York (the city). But I did not get an impression of the city as a clean one. I stayed with a guy at 150th and Amsterdam, and it was not a well kept area.

I also spent some time down in Brooklyn somewhere west of the Pratt campus. Not clean either.

L-girl said...

Oh, I totally misunderstood. Yeah, it's a dirty city. But most US cities are, if you get out of the tourist zones.

But I don't think 150th & Amsterdam is Harlem, that's Washington Heights. Def'y dirty there. (My old town.)

Amy said...

I tuned in for the bottom of the second. Harvey isn't feeling well, so I didn't have the heart to turn on the TV until at least 6:45....though I woke up at 5:30 psyched for the game!

OK, off to have breakfast. Back after for a bit before work.

tim said...

I think the temperature of this room's gone down by a few degrees since I've opened the blinds....funny how that works.

Speaking of temperature, I just about shit my pants right now. I have the ForecastFox extension which adds a weather toolbar to the bottom of the internets browser. Said it would be 74 and sunny today. Then I realized it hasn't been updated on this computer since I was in Florida for New Year's. Damn you computer technologies.

Joe Grav said...

Better inning for Dice.

Manhattan is generally clean, at least, cleaner than Boston... but I wouldn't call it a 'clean' city overall. Parts of it are.

Joe Grav said...

Here we go Dice!

James said...

Apparently Dale Arnold is doing play by play on the radio, now. Anyone listening to him? Is he going to be our regular play by play guy?

L-girl said...

Tim, that's funny re weather. Considering where we live. What with the snow outside and all. :)

Joe Grav said...

gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Joe Grav said...

I'm 90% sure Dave O'Brien will be the regular pbp guy, but his ESPN requirements keep him from making the trip to Japan.

Jere said...

Dale Arnold radio announcer only in the few games when Dave O'Brien isn't there.

tim said...

Yeah, I'm still wondering if we just had Easter or if it was Christmas...

tim said...

beauty lugo!

Joe Grav said...

oh my! nice play Lugo.

L-girl said...

Nice.

redsock said...

i just fixed the problem with this game. brought out the bobbledesk from downstairs.

we'll be fine now ...

s1c said...

Apparently Dale Arnold is doing play by play on the radio, now. Anyone listening to him? Is he going to be our regular play by play guy?

Naw Dale is the back for O'brien. It will be O'brien and Uncle Joe for most of the games

Jere said...

Gold play by Lugo.

Dale Arnold and John Rish, actually. Both will announce in the, like, 20 games when it's not O'Brien. I've been listening to Arnold in the ST and Japan ex. games, and he's very, uh, un-good.

Jere said...

Orsillo looking like James Caan in Bottle Rocket.

s1c said...

well, time to start up the car, will be following this game on WEEI for the rest. Look for a late inning comeback started by LBJ
!

James said...

I was under the impression that Harlem met Wash Heights at 155th. But I could be very wrong - I don't really know New York well enough to have an opinion on matters like this.

Great stab by Lugo.

L-girl said...

MUTE!!!

SoSock said...

MUCH better inning.
I'm sneaking into the bedroom to try and lift the wife's laptop without waking her so I can watch and chat.
Hate running into the office between innings.

Joe Grav said...

Alright, we have a 27% chance of winning this game according to FanGraphs, let's do it! :D

redsock said...

bud = mute.

Joe Grav said...

Start it up Mikey Lowell

Jere said...

"have a 27% chance of winning "

if it were a game with dice and cards, which it's not, so I still don't see why they even bother doing that.

James said...

Arnold is no good? That's too bad. I like him. There aren't an awful lot of liberals in sportstalk world.

L-girl said...

This is a game with Dice, silly.

redsock said...

is dale the guy that was yelling everything like it was a WS-winning slam?

Joe Grav said...

Darn, I actually had high hopes for that hit. My judgment isn't in mid-season form yet.

Trivia answer: Rocket?

Jere said...

okay, if it was Dice-K against St. Louis, I'd check fangraphs.

Joe Grav said...

breakfast time brb

L-girl said...

There aren't an awful lot of liberals in sportstalk world.

Is that ever true.

SoSock said...

RS gets out the bobbledesk, fixes everything.
Thanks!! We needed that.
I had to break out the fight song bottle-opener a couple of weeks ago to pull my Heels out of a late-game deficit.
The thing we do for our teams.....

L-girl said...

Oo Jere, good one. Seems very clever at this hour.

tim said...

time to boil a couple eggs...lets hope dice throws a couple gooseeggs?

Jere said...

Arnold just seems nervous when plays happen. He does that whole "I'll wait and see" tactic. No good when we can't see the action!

chief said...

This new SS is pretty good - he hits, makes a nice play to end the 3rd. When did we pick him up? Seems a little heavier than the old guy.

Jere said...

I am just talking about Arnold as a game announcer. (Yes, it's great that he's a liberal when on regular radio. Not much chance to talk politics during an actual game you're announcing. Although I will surely do that when I announce games on Youcastr this season..)

DANNDANN said...

Morning kids...its been a while ;-)

Not a great start but plenty of time...I'm more worried about making sure no one in the office has noticed i'm being distracted lol.

Pokerwolf said...

Good morning from the people who are "sleeping in"! I would have been up for following the game, but my daughter woke up early after having bad dreams. Then, I had to come into work! Boooo!

Happy Opening Day to you guys! It's not officially the start of baseball season until a JoS game thread with 100+ comments happens!

Jere said...

Gotta take a stupid shower and go to stupid work...where I'll go right to the break room and join everyone else who surely will be watching the game in there.

redsock said...

NOW reed is calling a strike at the letters.

James said...

*Has Dice-K hit 90 on the radar yet, this game?*

-Just typed that before he K'd Buck on a high fastball that hit 90.

Still though, where is his velocity?

SoSock said...

1 pitch, 1 out again, Dice seems to getting relaxed.
Wow, high strike call - I'd be pised too, but we'll take it!

L-girl said...

Yay Dice.

Amy said...

OK, got a few minutes to sip my tea, watch the game, and scan the posts before heading off to school for my first class back after spring break. :(

IMO, as one who regularly spends time in both Boston and NYC, Boston is a MUCH cleaner city overall than NY. I love NY, but it just is not as clean as Boston or DC or most any city I have been to. Even post Giuliani.

Wow, a 1-2-3. Go, Dice!

redsock said...

8-pitch inning.

time for the bats!

L-girl said...

If you've ever been out of the tourist areas of DC, it is not clean.

L-girl said...

But as I said, I think that goes for all US cities.

SoSock said...

Okie Dokie, let's get offensive here

L-girl said...

"Common soil"??? WTF is that? Are people actually saying that?

[If you're watching Bud and the ohter morons chat on ESPN feed.]

James said...

It's amazing that Blanton is as effective as he is. He's got terrible stuff.

tim said...

I lucked out this week. I would have to be leaving for work soon but I have to work in Hamilton today and tomorrow so basically leave after the game...or 8:45, whichever comes first.

Already showered/shaved, so I'm set on that front :P

James said...

I agree with L-girl. Major cities are dirty as hell. Trash-free streets are not especially high on the list of American priorities.

DANNDANN said...

""Common soil"??? WTF is that? Are people actually saying that?"

The unfortunate part of MLB.tv is you have no choice but to listen to these clowns...it all comes back to me now!

SoSock said...

DC - very unclean outside of the mall/tourist area.
We haven't been all over NYC,but considering the sheer numbers of people, found most of it to be surpisingly clean. Definitely some dirty areas, but as L-girl said - that's true almost everywhere

Amy said...

My brother lives in DC as do two of my friends. Not in tourist areas, but in very nice neighborhoods. I am sure that the poor neighborhoods look like the poor neighborhoods in NY and in Boston.

But the main residential areas in NY---the upper West Side, for example---just doesn't seem as clean to me as comparable neighborhoods---say, Brighton---in Boston. Maybe it's not so much dirty as cluttered??

L-girl said...

We're getting it on the Extra Innings package, but same problem. SHUT UP BUD!

Joe Grav said...

Back - with breakfast! woo, let's go Sox

Joe Grav said...

I didn't see all of it , but I was impressed with the cleanliness of Minneapolis.

chief said...

Who the hell is this new SS? He sucks!

James said...

Brighton can hardly be compared to the upper west side, though. Brighton doesn't really look very much like a city. There aren't a lot of buildings taller than a few stories. I think you'd be better off comparing it to the South End/Roxbury, but even that's not perfect.

DANNDANN said...

Hmmm imagine my panic this morning when mlb.tv said I was blacked out in England...I was almost shaking!

Still I got round it in the end and it seems Dice-K is doing the same.

Amy said...

Trash-free streets are not especially high on the list of American priorities.

I actually see little trash in any of those cities. Cities are hard to keep clean. I haven't been to Toronto, but Montreal didn't seem much different from Boston to me in terms of cleanliness. Nor did London, Rome, Jerusalem, etc. It's not an American thing.

Joe Grav said...

Here we go Dice

Amy said...

DiceK getting sharper here.

Remy agrees.

L-girl said...

Monteal, are you serious? Montreal is spotless.

Joe Grav said...

92 pitches. Probably his last inning. Make it a strong one.

SoSock said...

REED!!!
Screwed Dice on that one,
There!
Who is this new pitcher they brought in with that new SS?

Joe Grav said...

I hear Mexico City takes the cake for filthy cities.

Another 1-2-3 inning for DiceK! One more perhaps?

SoSock said...

Sheez! He's been trying to get Dice out of the game at the end of every inning since the 3rd now. SHUT UP!

L-girl said...

Then you've heard wrong. Mexico City has poor air quality, but it's not dirty at all. It's quite clean - all over.

(It's also a fantastic city, but that's different.)

Amy said...

Brighton is like the UWS in terms of being a fairly middle class neighborhood. In fact, the UWS is definitely more upscale than Brighton, where lots of college students (and my daughter) live. The UWS is not the equivalent of Roxbury; Harlem may be more the equivalent, though Harlem is starting to gentrify and Roxbury has not.

Joe Grav said...

Top of the order.

tim said...

Alright, logging off for today so I can kick back and relax and watch this before having to go to work.

See ya bright and early again tomorrow!

redsock said...

snyder was up last inning -- dice at 95 pitches, so that's it for him.

Joe Grav said...

London is numero uno on the list of cities I have to get to, but Mex City is somewhere on the list. (certainly behind San Fran and Paris, but up there)

D PED!

L-girl said...

Fuck yeah!

Amy said...

There's our ROY!!

bennymac said...

anyone else not getting the espn2 feed? my screen has been blank except for the commercials.

Joe Grav said...

The crowd's involved now.

SoSock said...

Joe G - Minneapolis would have to be clean - they have Garrison Keillor :)

L-girl said...

Joe, you will love it. It's under-rated.

SoSock said...

Damn! Missed the lead-off 2b getting coffee!
Go Peds!

Lord Lynch said...

Any green shoots of recovery, folks?

L-girl said...

Yeah, now I hear the crowd. It's cool that the Japanese fans are cheering for us.

Joe Grav said...

Here we go Papi!

Amy said...

Funny to hear you all talking about drinking coffee. Not the usual beverages being consumed during game threads!

Jere said...

Castig said CHB got a foul ball and gave it to a kid who bowed. While I was in the shower. (Shower radios rule!) DId they show that on TV?

Joe Grav said...

Red Sox baseball: the most popular show on this or most any other planet

SoSock said...

I really hope that Dice will get another batter or 2, but I know it's not going to happen.

chief said...

new 2B ain't bad either.

redsock said...

no clown shots, jere.

chief said...

Love that the crowd is Youking.

Joe Grav said...

Critical juncture.

Jere said...

counting pitches yet on this AB?

Joe Grav said...

Damn, if it were Fenway, Sox fans would have interfered with him. Stupid fans.

L-girl said...

damn

Jere said...

and stupid NESN MISSES the swing. We hear crack of bat during past replay...

Joe Grav said...

bennymac said...

doctor dong?

Amy said...

OK, Doc, drive him in so I can leave with the Sox ahead...

Jere said...

joy: I remember the pitch thing from last year. Didn't remember the final decision on the official pitch when counting begins.

L-girl said...

Pitch counting is every AB, but a long AB begins at 10 (I think).

SoSock said...

Doc K doesn't help Dice K :(

L-girl said...

YEAH!!!!!!!

Joe Grav said...

You just knew Moss would end up driving in a run. And just like that.....

bennymac said...

mossman!!!!

Amy said...

OK, so I will take Moss doing it!!

Off to work. Enjoy the game!

GO SOX!!

L-girl said...

Now Amy can go to work in a good mood. :)

SoSock said...

WOO WOO!!!!
Moss growing fat!

redsock said...

buh bye gern blanston.

Been getting the kid ready for school, but have gotten to see the last two Sox halves.

Gotta say...those are some good looking guys out there. They may not nail it every time, but whatta season to come! Ortiz, while not quite getting it done is still looking healthy.

L-girl said...

Man, I was fine when the alarm went off at 5:00, but it is hitting me now. zzzz...

SoSock said...

Let's go Bullpen!
Sun's coming around this side of the house now, getting nice and bright here, this is really strange, but fun.

Joe Grav said...

I'll feel fine until I get to class, I'm sure

DANNDANN said...

I-girl welcome to my 2007 postseason...you think your fine and then tiredness gives you a swift kick ;-)

L-girl said...

Hi Nick, good timing, lots of gamethreaders are leaving for work.

L-girl said...

DannDann, I know what you mean. It's L-girl, btw. You can see it better in the other view.

Joe Grav said...

Not a good start for Snyder.

DANNDANN said...

LOL I seem to remember making that mistake last season ;-) Apologies l-girl

Joe Grav said...

Dammit, really?

SoSock said...

Damn!
Really a lucky hit, not hit well, just in the right spot. Hate Snyder didn't get the out with the good pitch.
Now he pays the price.
SHIT!!

ish said...

owie.

snyder's got that far away look.

but! no worries.

DANNDANN said...

Damn.

Lord Lynch said...

Thank you Kyle.

You have been a great boost to us on this day.

Joe Grav said...

The ole o'fense is going to have to pick us up again, but first Kyle's gotta work himself through this inning.

nick said...

Unfortunately, I can't stay for too long. I've got to take Emma to the bus stop now. can come back for ~15 then get to work for 9.

Why is Snyder trying to dampen my enthusiasm?

Can't do it though!

Joe Grav said...

Come on Snyder.

James said...

There are large parts of Roxbury that are gentrified. There are a ton of NU students in Roxbury.

The main reason I said South End/Roxbury was because the South End is a little swankier than UWS and Roxbury is less swanky. On average, they're as close as I can come.

I live in Allston, which is sort of Brighton, and I can't really think of it as analogous to the UWS.
