G2: Athletics 5, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 001 000 - 1 5 0
Athletics - 013 000 01x - 5 9 1
Harden (6-3-1-3-9, 95) was tough to hit and Lester (4-5-4-3-4, 83) was tough to watch. Emil Brown atoned for his base-running blunder yesterday by smacking a three-run dong to left in the third. Manny hit a solo shot with two outs in the sixth. Other hits: two singles from Lowell, a single from Lugo and a double from Crisp. David Aardsma pitched 1.2 innings (1 H, 3 K) and looked very good.

156 hours and change until the next regular season pitch.

***

Jon Lester (2007 ERA+ 104) / Rich Harden (2007 ERA+ 171 (25.2 IP))

Red Sox Athletics

Dustin Pedroia, 2B Travis Buck, RF
Kevin Youkilis, 1B Mark Ellis, 2B
David Ortiz, DH Daric Barton, 1B

Mike Lowell, 3B Emil Brown, LF
Brandon Moss, RF Bobby Crosby, SS
Jason Varitek, C Jack Hannahan, 3B
Coco Crisp, CF Kurt Suzuki, C
Julio Lugo, SS Chris Denorfia, CF
Francona said Lyndon's back is okay, Coco was going to play today regardless. Drew's back is no worse, but the team is playing it safe, since they have a 10-hour flight to California coming up.

Also, SoSH TaLK on Yook's cut-off in the 10th inning of Game 1.

Harden responds by firing a pitch straight through Moss's bat

Jack Marshall said...

Lots of time left, people. Get into Oakland's Sox 2006 reunion bullpen, and 4 runs will look like nuthin'...

Joe Grav said...

In all honesty, Orsillo is a tool, but he is one of, if not the best in the business. I've had the (mis)fortune of hearing a lot of the local guys from around the country when I had the digital cable package for a year.... no fun.

BREAKFAST IS OPEN! brb

Rob said...

i'll be back in a couple of innings. i'm playing taxi driver this morning.

Jere said...

I have a Harden autographed ball. I want that value to go down NOW.

tim said...

Nobody says Wake is slow--except for that one horrible article.

That's probably what I was referring to....I dunno, I don't remember the sources of everything I read/see/hear...

Rob said...

i'd love to hear jack edwards call a red sox game.

Amy said...

Morning, folks. Couldn't drag my head awake this morning. Love waking up to baseball, though not to a 4 run deficit.

allan said...

if i recall, 8 of the 10 fastest sox games last year were wake starts.

Jere said...

The Wake slow article--it was Newsday or something, and the guy accused one of the fastest working pitchers in baseball of being slow. I still can't believe that made the paper.

laura k said...

"I've had the (mis)fortune of hearing a lot of the local guys from around the country when I had the digital cable package for a year.... no fun."

We always have that, too. Orsillo is ok. I don't think he's great, but he's ok. Remy sucks.

tim said...

I'd believe it, I think that game in Toronto was well under 3 hrs actually.

Nice K. Couple more so we can get the bats back out there.

tim said...

I dunno, from a purely entertainment POV, Orsillo and Remy are alright. Couple of laughs, it's fun...that's all.

Amy said...

Ah, I kinda like Remy. Maybe because I remember his days as a player, maybe because of his authentic Boston accent. Sure, his sense of humor is annoying, but I like having an announcer with true Red Sox roots and loyalty.

Jere said...

Wicked inning for Lester. Hey, wait, Lester plays in Boston, how could he not be called Wicked Lester???

laura k said...

I'm not after the entertaining factor. To me, that's what the game is for. I'd be happier with a Vin Scully-like pbp and commentary, and nothing else. I find the other stuff just stupid.

laura k said...

I always figure the Boston accent is how he got the job.

Ron said...

Don't get me wrong, I'll take Don and Jerry over most if not all the other options I've heard. Bar is set pretty low though.

And "very unique" just makes me cringe when I hear it.

Jere said...

"maybe because of his authentic Boston accent."

Funny, I have a line in my book about Remy that says this almost exactly. I agree, entertainment-wise, I love our announcers.

laura k said...

The bar is indeed low. It's slim pickin's out there if you care aobut such things.

laura k said...

sluuuugo

tim said...

yeah, well that's just it. NESN commentary is probably the lesser of the evils. i dunno, i'd rather have them then a boring, monotone FUCK

laura k said...

oh shit, never mind, erased

Jack Marshall said...

I just had a brilliant comment eaten by Blogger. Now you'll never know.

Amy said...

I have a good feeling about Lugo this year. I know it's early (second game...), but I just do.

tim said...

anyway i was saying, i would rather have remy/orsillo than someone with no personality...clearly, redsock's dream - a game with no commentary, would be ideal, but since we're gonna get something at least NESN keeps it real. it could be worse. it could be Thorne and McCarver. I just cringed at that thought.

laura k said...

believe me, i'll take nesn over any fox affiliate any day.

Lord Lynch said...

Morning all.

Not the greatest start to the day.

laura k said...

jack, if blogger eats your comment, a lot of times you can just click refresh and it will appear. doesn't work every time, but it often does.

SoSock said...

So we just had the local station commercial insert and they showed one for our local Minor Lg. Hockey team. A woman in the classic birth room, on the table, sheets over her legs, dr at the feet, and a hockey puck comes shooting out into the waiting mitt of a goalie in full gear on the other side of the room.
Unbelievable

Jere said...

Okay, I guess I have to explain Wicked Lester. The band you now know as KISS started off as "Wicked Lester." We've got a guy named Lester here in wicked-ville. It's perfect.

(I just told Kim--who is a huge Kiss fan--my proud new nickname, and she said "I don't get it." If a Kiss fan doesn't get it, this nickname may not have the legs I thought it would. Nonetheless, I'll be using it.)

laura k said...

so this guy is now listed first in the baseball encyc? that's a cool distinction.

allan said...

lester: 4-5-4-3-4, 82

Ron said...

aardsma aalright.

Amy said...

I agree with Tim. Of course, I am also able to block out most of what they are saying. It is just noise in the background to me most of the time. Unlike most of you, I cannot watch, type, read AND listen...so the listening just doesn't happen. Same reason I don't hear/see the commercials. Too busy scrolling, typing and reading.

So given that, I'd rather have a real Red Sox fan as my announcer than some generic sportscaster.

allan said...

A woman in the classic birth room, on the table, sheets over her legs, dr at the feet, and a hockey puck comes shooting out into the waiting mitt of a goalie in full gear on the other side of the room.

that's very unique.

SoSock said...

Pretty good inning for aardvark

laura k said...

The *worst* thing they can do is slow the game down? There's got to be many things far worse.

Joe Grav said...

Back, with Breakfast of Champions: pancakes (plain, no syrup or butter), a banana, a cup of powerade, and coffee.

And L, you'd be happy to know that at the behest of several student organizations, that would be Fair Trade certified Central Highlands coffee. :)

laura k said...

amy, i'm so envious of your talent for blocking out unwanted noise. i'd trade you my never losing anything for that in a heartbeat.

Jack Marshall said...

Oh-oh...Laura, my wife is awake. From now on, I'll have to address you as "Renaldo," or she'll be on to us....

Amy said...

Oh, damn, I thought they would miss that pop up.

tim said...

epic fail for breaky for me today. i wish i still lived in rez, jeeze. got up an hour late, and i'm too damn tired/lazy to do anything about it today. milk expired too, so can't even do cereal. looks like i'll be making a stop somewhere on the way down to work.

laura k said...

OK Jack, and I'll call you Susie.

*shrug*

Jack Marshall said...

With Aardsma, Corey, maybe Hanson eventually, the Sox have some good bullpen depth.

allan said...

thorne and phillips mentioned CHB's line in his column: "champions of breakfast"

they had quite a chuckle.

Amy said...

I would love never to lose anything (recently lost a bracelet that fell off my wrist somewhere...very upsetting). And sometimes I wish I could watch, read, type and listen since I miss gems like "very unique."

Jack Marshall said...

No, that won't work...SHE calls me Susie....

tim said...

Amy, true. Yeah, a lot of it is background noise to me as well. Maybe that's why we don't care as much compared to L... I'm a very selective hearer, and my ears are deaf

MBM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

laura k said...

BEING!!!

Joe Grav said...

We're on the board. He's a bad man.

Amy said...

MANNY! He's the man!

allan said...

dong being dong

tim said...

to finish that thought before the Ironman dong....

my ears are deafinitely not at 100%....

SoSock said...

Worst may be a stretch, but when you're talking to 13-14 yr-olds you use extremes.
I also reminded them that at any time when they felt unsure, about the signs or just themselves, or if they were distracted, they SHOULD step out of the box or off of the rubber and collect themselves, just don't do it with every swing or pitch.
Manny - nice!
It's a start :)

allan said...

the response to renaldo is clara.

Zenslinger said...

And MBM takes back the MLB lead in RBIs from Emil Brown!

Joe Grav said...

well we got one

laura k said...

Hey Zen, you're up early. (Same time I got up, I guess.)

allan said...

manny now on pace for 405 RBI.

Amy said...

Got to go to the gym in a few. I hope they have the game on the TVs. These morning games are a treat, but harder for me to fit into my "busy" schedule.

Joe Grav said...

Gotta stick with #1 in the Red Sox Encyclopedia this inning, no?

Jack Marshall said...

Dong Being Dong is Hazel Mae's uncle.

This park really does play huge---didn't Lowell's smash look like it was tagged?

Amy said...

Remy/Orsillo said Manny said he wants to be RBI leader this year and hit the 500 HR mark this year.

Joe Grav said...

Manny Ramirez: international sensation

Jack Marshall said...

Well, if he doesn't hit the 500 mark this year, he's through. He should get to 520, easy.

SoSock said...

I love the hanging autograph stuff, and didn't know about the same deal at Pawtucket.
Shit, that means I learned something from these guys today.
I feel not-worthy

Amy said...

Who is this Aardsma? He looks good!

Joe Grav said...

K for Aaaaaaaaaaah! (seeing if that nickname sticks, :-p)

Joe Grav said...

Someone alert Paul Tagliabue that the A's are illegally filming the Red Sox bullpen

K!!!!!!!!!!!!

SoSock said...

Is aardsma what baby aardvarks call their grandmothers?

allan said...

damn, aardsma wants that last spot in the pen.

Joe Grav said...

Or how about "Aa-OK" for Aardsma?

Zenslinger said...

Hate to say it, Laura, but this is more of a "got up to go to the bathroom and decided to check Gameday" than a "dedicated Red Sox fan starts drinking beer at 3am" kind of thing.

The Bar downstairs opens at 6:00, in an hour. I have never been waiting at the door before.

Even though I'm not watching (I haven't gotten MLB.tv yet), Aardsma seems impressive...just what we need.

Denorfina seemed to rob Lowell on Gameday...true?

allan said...

i was going to say, manny BETTER hit 10 taters this year.

tim said...

damn, aardsma wants that last spot in the pen.

He can have KySny's for all I care. I liked the trade, I think he's a solid reliever. Looking to be one of those 1 and 2/3 guys right now though.

Jere said...

That was a very unique dong by Manny.

Don Aase finally gives something up.

Jack Marshall said...

Great stop by Coco, Renaldo. If only he could throw....

tim said...

Someone alert Paul Tagliabue that the A's are illegally filming the Red Sox bullpen

You didn't hear? The Sox taped the Cards BP during the 2004 World Series! lol

SoSock said...

Good showing by Aardsma - he's making a case.

Jere said...

okay, I find this highly entertaining. NESN to celebrate their 25th year of Sox games is showing old highlights complete with '84 cheesy music and graphics. This is gonna be a fun season.

Amy said...

So much for Aardsma. Who now?

See y'all in a bit.

Lord Lynch said...

Excuse me for being dumb - do these count as two road games for the Red Sox?

If not, why have we batted first in both games?

Apologies if this has been answered.

tim said...

okay, I find this highly entertaining. NESN to celebrate their 25th year of Sox games is showing old highlights complete with '84 cheesy music and graphics. This is gonna be a fun season.

you're not the only one whose amused :P

allan said...

doctor drove it shy of the track or just to it.

Jere said...

So in Boston is it Aahdzmer?

allan said...

everyday lopez

laura k said...

Lord, yes, both road games. Oakland is the home team. Then they pick up the series in Oakland next week.

tim said...

Excuse me for being dumb - do these count as two road games for the Red Sox?

Yup, I asked the same question before game 1 so its not dumb :P

Joe Grav said...

I remember once ESPN Classic decided that it would be "retro" to air current, uninteresting college basketball games not intriguing enough to be on ESPN, and put them on with the original crappy ESPN graphics.

Needless to say, it was dumb, and it was a sign of ESPN Classic's decline (the name for it now should be "ESPN Re-run" - take any old stupid thing that once aired on ESPN, and then put it on again)

Jere said...

Lord L, I don't see why you think it would necessarily be a home game for us. Because we have more fans there?

Ron said...

yes, road games Lord.

Joe Grav said...

You think the Sox would agree to give up a home sellout? :-p

Lord Lynch said...

Red Sox not giving up any home revenue on this one, L.

Smart money making cookies.

laura k said...

the announcers were making such a big deal over the sox being on the road until their home opener. but don't half the teams in baseball have to start the season on the road?

SoSock said...

Tim - with Oki and Paps a 1 & 2/3 kind of guy would be very valuable :)

Lord Lynch said...

Here comes a three run homer to kill the game.

Optimistic Lord in the house.

Joe Grav said...

Alright, way to go, put in Lopez when Aa-ok was doing so well.

Joe Grav said...

Yeah, but half the teams in baseball aren't the biggest sensation in world sports... 2nd to Manchester United, maybe.

Lord Lynch said...

L - I've got Thorne and Phillips on extra low....

tim said...

alright, need to get my ass dressed for success. (work).

its been a blasty-blast...be back later to comment on the rest of this business. back to reality now though.

later all!

Joe Grav said...

I am endlessly amused by the music selection at the Tokyo Dome.

laura k said...

LL, we've got them on MUTE. I couldn't take it anymore.

Joe Grav said...

Damn the crowd and its overdramatic response to everything, scared me half to death

Here we go boys!

Lord Lynch said...

jere - thought it would be fair to give one home game up each.

I'm English. We play cricket! We like fairness.

SoSock said...

cringes as Manny jumps at the ball while catching it

Jere said...

L, maybe they meant from a few days ago until April 8th, we'll be travelling and never being at our home park, meaning Ft. Myers or Fenway. Whereas other teams are still just hangin' around Florida for another week with only short bus rides. I don't know.

Zenslinger said...

The Japanese game is relentlessly noisy. You get used to it.

laura k said...

Maybe. They didn't say that, but then, why am I expecting them to explain what they mean.

Jack Marshall said...

[The Sox will win this game.]

If Lopez doesn't show he can get lefties out this year, he's the one who will lose his job to Aardsma.

SoSock said...

All right - bullpen meat!

Jere said...

Lynch, okay, I didn't know you meant "this game" meaning "as opposed to yesterday's". Makes sense now. I thought you meant the two game series.

Joe Grav said...

HARDEN OUT

allan said...

harden out -- and it's US who will be hitting the 3 run hrs.

laura k said...

oh good, a praying pitcher. that won't help, sucker, get in there and give up hits.

Joe Grav said...

I thought the only failure of the offseason was not properly acquiring a legitimate, lefty-on-lefty guy.

allan said...

well, lopez was the anti-loogy last year. yet he was used in that role all season.

Rob said...

my taxi duties are over, i have nourishment, and the red sox... are down by only three now.

little victories. little little victories. not right there in moss' AB. he needs to work on pitch selection.

Joe Grav said...

F***, it's never good to strike out after being up 3-0.

Tek is like an automatic out. Hopefully we can get it cranked after that

allan said...

moss 3-0 to a K. boo.

tito *loves* his loogy. let's hope the guy in that role can actually do the job.

Lord Lynch said...

A lot of wafting and waving tonight

Jere said...

Who is it?

Joe Grav said...

Are the other Dodger games going to be on the radio?

Joe Grav said...

A's pitchers making us look foolish.

Ron said...

Didn't somebody mention the new Designated Catcher rule yesterday?

allan said...

harden: 6-3-1-3-9, 95

& tek being tek.

Ron said...

OCOC!!!

laura k said...

way to go ococ

Joe Grav said...

There ya go Ococ. Too bad Moss didn't get on base. Alright Lugotime

Jack Marshall said...

When he's slumping, nobody looks worse at the plate tha Varitek.

laura k said...

I'm tempted to say "how can you tell", but I guess that's not fair.

Jere said...

VU, Coco.

Joe Grav said...

jack: Mark. Bellhorn.

Rob said...

all three dodger games will be on the radio.

Ron said...

Lugotime - is that like Miller Time, where you're promised it will taste great or be less filling, but it fails on both counts?

Joe Grav said...

AAAAAAAAaahhhhhh. I'm beginning to suspect that this is the first of many 'not our night' type nights.

Or mornings.

Or whatever.

Jere said...

That pisses me off. Bad throw to first you should be diving or sliding or avoiding that tag.

Joe Grav said...

Come and listen to my story of a man named Jed....

laura k said...

not only does the guy have to pray for a full 2 minutes before getting on the mound, he has to give an obnoxious fist pump for every out. bah.

Jere said...

Eh, I guess maybe you don't have time to react. But you see that 1bman coming off the bag, avoid him!

allan said...

MDC in

Ron said...

My only problem with Okakima is the mound praying. Anybody have a nice pejorative for that?

Jere said...

Yeah, Casilla is like JoBa(y Area). Young, big, excitable, violent delivery, hard thrower, from an oppressed people.

Joe Grav said...

Nice play MDC.

Ron said...

Nice effort MDC.

Jere said...

very unique play by MDC

Rob said...

i never really look at it as mound praying. it just looks like he's having a personal moment before he goes to pitch.

Jere said...

What would YOU do with a drunken sailor?

Joe Grav said...

And the crowd 'oohs.'

I wonder if they have the same sissy bench clearing 'incidents' that they do in the MLB in Japanese baseball.

Ron said...

I'm enjoying the very unique uses of "very" and "unique" in the same sentence.

Joe Grav said...

This guy likes to call the high strikes.

These Dice-K shots are resembling PedroCam back in the old days.

Joe Grav said...

This is pretty funny.

Jere said...

Remy and Don getting a huge kick out of all the shots of Dice K, as NESN is picking up the Japanese feed. They're showing Dice from every angle, in succession, and Remy is now in a laughing fit.

laura k said...

Now I will admit, Remy's laughing fits are funny. And contagious.

Shit, that replay scared me.

Joe Grav said...

You can still hear him laughing in the background

Jere said...

Don and Rem both speechless they're in such a fit. This is a "new classic."

allan said...

s-pin has the same feed.

Jere said...

ES urine N?

laura k said...

Don's voice gets squeaky when he laughs so much, it's funny. We'll have to wait to hear it.

Jere said...

VU inning by MDC

allan said...

if nesn had its own cameras, maybe it could get a shot of a fan throwing a piece of sushi at someone else.

Zenslinger said...

Attaboy MDC.

laura k said...

this game thread is very unique. perhaps that is our theme this season.

allan said...

i wonder how remy and don get their pot through customs.

Joe Grav said...

*snort*

okay time to piece together the comeback

SoSock said...

Peds - ranging
I seriously hope we get some runs here. No drs appts today to use for an excuse, so I've GOT to get to work after this inning. And I'll be calling my customer to tell him I'm running late at that.

Zenslinger said...

It occurs to me that if anyone in MLB really is "Johnny from Burger King", it might be Dustin Pedroia.

Jack Marshall said...

This is the inning.

[I stand corrected. Bellhorn it is. Then again, Bellhorn looked terrible was hhe WAS hitting...]

Jere said...

Foul, Strikeout, Error! It's Keith Foulke! Now we score... Manny duped him yesterday. He has to get up this inning so he can dong.

Jere said...

I want Manny up as the tying run, come on!

Jere said...

Nice!!!

laura k said...

yooooooook

Joe Grav said...

YEAH

Zenslinger said...

So he can re-dong, Jere!

SoSock said...

It's another start :)

Ron said...

The was a screamer.

Jere said...

Parlez VU E-6?

SoSock said...

Papi - VERY due!

Joe Grav said...

Truped.

laura k said...

Maybe Papi's waiting to hit his 1st at Fenway.

Jere said...

re-dong in this game, but initial dong vs. Foulke. He set him up yesterday by *pretending* to be fooled on strike three.

SoSock said...

Crap - c'mon Papi :(

Joe Grav said...

Manny these are your people, they love you dude. Get it done.

Ron said...

Japanese fans seem to be like American fans - looking at the ball instead of the fielder.

Sigh.

Jere said...

can't wait til the 400th comment. THey should do it after 100, actually.

laura k said...

i wonder if you can set that in the comment settings. i never checked. will now.

Ron said...

C'mon Manny, you've got him right where you want him.

allan said...

manny needs another copier.

Joe Grav said...

Come on Manny shoulda cranked that one

Joe Grav said...

shit

allan said...

sheeeeeet

Jere said...

Seriously, go to Fenway or anywhere else, and it's the same thing. Ball makes contact with bat--"Ahhh! Yeaaaa-- whoops." Pop out shortstop.

Manny conitnues to set up Foulke for later in the year... Ah well, we're better against SoHu anyway.

SoSock said...

Shit. I gotta at least get ready to go
Damn!

Rob said...

manny needs another copier.

yeah. i don't want to see rich harden or emil brown going home with one.

Jack Marshall said...

Did I say this inning? I meant NEXT inning.

I hate to say it, but Foulke looks awfully good this year...like 2004.

laura k said...

fans everywhere are the same when it comes to that.

Jere said...
