G93: Red Sox 6, Twins 5

Twins - 000 300 110 - 5 11 0
Red Sox - 100 000 14x - 6 11 1
Another eighth-inning comeback!

Trailing 5-2, Ellsbury began the inning with an opposite field double off Reyes, a fly ball that landed close to the line and hopped into the corner. Guerrier came in to pitch and allowed a single to Pedroia (his 2nd hit, 16-game streak), a flair into shallow right field. Down by three, Lyndon wisely was held at third. Drew (who doubled home the team's first run back in the opening frame) grounded out to second, scoring Ellsbury and moving Pedroia to second.

Manny then whacked Guerrier's first pitch over the Wall and into the Monster Seats for a game-tying home run. 5-5! Lowell struck out on three pitches, but Youkilis cranked a double to left-center that Gomez dove for but could not snare. (Yook also singled in the fifth and tripled and scored in the seventh.) Yook took third on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on Moss's single up the middle.

In the ninth, Punto doubled to lead off and was bunted to third, but Papelbon struck out pinch-hitter Kubel and got Casilla to ground to second.

The Yankees blanked the Rays 5-0 in the Bronx, so we are now 3 GB and the MFY are 7.5 GB.

***

Nick Blackburn (3.78, 104 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.21, 133 ERA+)

Varitek gets the night off.

Since May 17:
Varitek .174/.267/.280
Cash .114/.188/.227
Sigh.

Also: Rays at Yankees (Kazmir/Pettitte), 7 PM

MOSS, LUGO, CASH!

Four-letter words, eh?

I am predicting they go 10-for-14.

laura k said...

MOSS, LUGO, CASH!

Four-letter words, eh?

Here's three more.

PAPI, COME BACK!!!

Jack Marshall said...

Moss, Lugo, Cash will add up to more hits than Crisp, Cora and Tek, at least based on recent performance.

Rob said...

Oi. Mauer, Morneau, Monroe. There's a mouthful.

Amy said...

Wow, Cash makes Tek look good. Who'd have thought it?

nixon33 said...

ish said...
Oi. Mauer, Morneau, Monroe. There's a mouthful.

alomst as confusing as millar, miller, mueller.

Zenslinger said...

Whoa! Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Cubs for prospects (including Murton).

NL's makin' some noise on the trade front. If this keeps up they're going to start winning the ASG.

allan said...

I would like Tampa to lose tonight.

If we are in 2nd, which we are, we should always want the 1st place team to lose.

Tampa's opponent is no threat to us, so who cares what they do.

Rob said...

Go Yankees!

Rob said...

Boy, that sounds weird.

Rob said...

Don't they only have a two-game series? If so, Tampa losing and New York winning the two games will be good.

But, the most important thing is the Red Sox win.

allan said...

ack - "circle me bert"

whoever said home team gets the EI feed is full of shit- booooooooo!

allan said...

Is Rosenthal taller than FY?

nixon33 said...

i go for the rays tonight. i want the yanks killed off, and asap. the rays will come down to earth eventually, i believe we can catch them, but i want the yanks buried.

laura k said...

We're in second place, so I've got to want the 1st place team to lose.

But then, I don't have that irrational Yankees hatred that you genetic Sox fans do.

Patrick said...

BWAAHAHAH. NOOBIE!

laura k said...

Nice out there!

Patrick said...

OOOO, mild moderation. Time to take off the pants...

laura k said...

Bert Blyleven: "...to Yugo, covering second base".

Rob said...

OOOO, mild moderation. Time to take off the pants...

Earmuffs! Eyemuffs!

Patrick said...

Don't be shy, Ish. We're all friends here.

Rob said...

Is Rosenthal taller than FY?

I'd say no. I'm not taller than FY, and I'd really, really like to be taller than Rosenthal.

Zenslinger said...

the rays will come down to earth eventually, i believe we can catch them, but i want the yanks buried.

I'm kind of torn between this viewpoint and Redsock's. But...at least one of them is going to lose tonight.

Lowell makes more errors these days, but they never seem to cost us.

laura k said...

Me noobie? Yes, relatively speaking. Probably the newest Sox fan here, although one of the older gamethreaders, by age.

And a lifelong baseball fan, of course.

Rob said...

I don't think I'm taller than FY.

laura k said...

Oops, Allan tells me you weren't laughing at me.

But now you can if you want. :)

Patrick said...

I was calling Gomez the Newbie. Getting picked off.

laura k said...

Yes, Allan clued me in. It was after my "genetic Sox fan" comment, so...

Duh.

Rob said...

Cubs quickly countered Milwaukee's move of trading for Sabathia... Cubs acquired Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin from Oakland for Sean Gallahger, Matt Murton, and Eric Patterson.

Rob said...

CF camera bobbing around in the wind again.

Patrick said...

Wow, that's breaking news, Ish. Ha ha, I can't help but thinking the Brewers feel their plans have been foiled.

Rob said...

What does the Peanut Gallery (you all - pants or no pants) think of a Youkilis for Texiera trade? I know I mentioned this last night, but I'm curious as to what your take would be on saying goodbye to Youk for the big bat.

Patrick said...

Bean is getting the farm stocked.

Rob said...

Rich Harden baffled the Red Sox both times he pitched against them.

Patrick said...

I would love to have Teixeira on our team, but there's no room with Youk at first. I feel like it wouldn't be a big enough upgrade to warrant messing with.

Patrick said...

That's a double...

laura k said...

I can't see getting rid of Yook.

allan said...

Does Tex sweat a lot?

allan said...

I'd do the trade. Tex is *younger* than Yook and quite a bit better with the stick.

Patrick said...

I hope he doesn't go to any other team in the AL East, especially Baltimore. Roberts/Markakis/Teixeira would be scary...

WOOOOT A RUN!!!

Rob said...

You can't teach height!

Or speed!

Zenslinger said...

FIRE FIRE FIRE.

laura k said...

What's that about JD Drew cooling off, Bert?

Patrick said...

Manny could drop a little knowledge on Young.

laura k said...

He's younger? I wouldn't have guessed that.

Rob said...

And they'd definitely have to sign Tex, who'll be asking for lots and lots of American money.

Patrick said...

He wants to play in Baltimore, so he might give them a discount.

laura k said...

TRAP!

Rob said...

Tex would want to play for Baltimore? Does he not want to win a World Series or something?

allan said...

yeah i would have guessed yook was a couple years younger.

Patrick said...

I don't know. I have heard rumors that he really wants to play in Baltimore (he is a native).

Of course, we play there a lot, and we are perennial playoff contenders.

My question is, how is he in left?

Zenslinger said...

My question is, how is he in left?

Interesting, and maybe problematic, question there.

Hate to say it, but it would also keep him off the Yankees.

Rob said...

There is the small issue of defense. How GOOD of a first baseman in Teixiera?

Patrick said...

More miracles pulled out of the beard.

allan said...

TB: 00
NY: 0

nixon33 said...

just checked in on the mets game for a sec. lincecum looks like hes going to throw at your soul.

laura k said...

scary!

Patrick said...

I love Lincecum since I read that SI article about him. I haven't seen him pitch yet.

allan said...

great story on him in the last SI.

Zenslinger said...

How GOOD of a first baseman in Teixiera?

He is said to be very good but (despite liking the Braves), I can't vouch for him myself.

Kazmir has 5 K's after 2 IP. Sheee-yit!

nixon33 said...

he looks like a gunslinger!

allan said...

viva red dot!

but lose, okay?

Rob said...

Yankees are giving away 20,000 mustaches tomorrow. Probably a way to get people to vote for HGH for the ASG

Patrick said...

Their defense looks similar. According to the super genius Bill James.

Zenslinger said...

he looks like a gunslinger!

Lincecum? He looks like the pimply president of a high school chess club!

Rob said...

I've seen him pitch a couple of times. He's a real fun one to watch.

laura k said...

mustache giveaway is a cute idea

allan said...

that reminds me to subscribe to james's site

Patrick said...

They said he can do back flips and walk on his hands. Not many pitchers are athletic like that. Of course, Matsuzaka can probably do a double back flip over someones head.

laura k said...

I think it's the motion that looks like a gunslinger.

Rob said...

I'd like to see Longoria get voted in, though.

Rob said...

Baseball ballet!

Patrick said...

Looking at the fielding bible leaders, it's amazing how good Utley/Rollins are both at defense, but offense.

Rob said...

Wow. That was a strong bunt.

That helps Lester's pitch count, though!

Patrick said...

Sigh. Lester is dream! <3

Patrick said...

Dreamy*

Rob said...

38/25 through 3 for Lester.

allan said...

they are not to go 10-for-14 at this rate.

Patrick said...

I doubt anyone thought they would

Rob said...

Oi. Pitcher's duel?

laura k said...

Patrick, are you taking over the Andy role? Going to tell us about your dreams of Lester?

allan said...

27 pitches thru 3 for blackburn (12-9-6).

jeez.

Rob said...

27/22 for Blackburn through 3.

Patrick said...

Naw, I'm nowhere near Andy's level. I'd take a signed ball from Lester, and I mean baseball.

Rob said...

Bottom 3rd in NY, still scoreless.

laura k said...

and I mean baseball

:>)

Patrick said...

Did anyone else freak out with joy when they saw Ortiz in BP on NESN last night?

laura k said...

It made me very happy.

laura k said...

It's thundering here.

Rob said...

It's thundering here.

I really wish it was thundering here.

Patrick said...

I hope it rains here. I wouldn't have to water the plants.

Rob said...

O'Brien, who lives in Rye, New Hampshire, cannot tell between Hampton and New Hampton.

Zenslinger said...

Thousands of firefighters wish it was raining here. The smoke on the highway going up to Tahoe was unbelievable.

Kazmir's on the point of getting out of a 2nd-and-3rd no-out jam. 2 K's. Calm Eyes up.

Patrick said...

I like when Lester is getting ground balls.

Rob said...

Downtown Toronto is getting the meat of that thunderboomer.

Zenslinger said...

Jeter drives in two with a double. Crap. I mean, uh...yay! Go Yankees!

I think...

Rob said...

That was not a bad bounce off the wall, and yet, they sitll get a 2-run triple.

Patrick said...

wow. 2-0 NY. 2-0 MN

laura k said...

In terms of whether, we might as well be in downtown TO, just 20-30 mins away.

laura k said...

Uh, make that weather.

Crap. 3-1

Rob said...

In terms of whether, we might as well be in downtown TO, just 20-30 mins away.

That can be a long ways away as far as thunderstorms go.

So, was that Lester's second pick-off of the game?

Patrick said...

I might have to get some ice cream. Joe talking about iced coffee tempting my sweet tooth.

Rob said...

I might have to get some ice cream. Joe talking about iced coffee tempting my sweet tooth.

Where do you normally go for ice cream?

Patrick said...

Yeah, I want NY to win. I want to gain some ground.

Patrick said...

I just get a pint of B&J

Zenslinger said...

Let's git it back!

9casey said...

I didn't realize the Red Sox drafted Tex in '98 and he didn't sign..I wouldn't trade Yook for him....

ish said...
Go Yankees!

I could never root for the Yankees...I just can't do it......

Rob said...

Do you eat that whole pint at once?

I want dole whip. There's a good ice cream stand near here in Dover called Golick's that sells it. Their other ice cream is good too. There's one in Barrington too, I think. Minus the dole whip.

Rob said...

I feel we can handle the Yankees being two less games behind us. Hard to handle being 4+ games behind Tampa at the Break.

allan said...

blyleven says when he was a player, he used to go into the wall and change the game scores. says it used to piss off the guys in there.

he was a pitcher, not an left fielder. how would he go back there during a game? idiot.

9casey said...

ish said...

I want dole whip.

I had a pineapple dole whip in Disney and it was the greatest Ice Cream concoction ever

allan said...

you are not rooting for the yankees to win; you are rooting for the rays to lose.

Patrick said...

Do you eat that whole pint at once?

Every time. I just throw out the top as soon as I open it.

nick said...

so.... Go Rays... down the drain!

Rob said...

Every time. I just throw out the top as soon as I open it.

Wow.

My sister is doing weight watchers right now, so she keeps mentioning the points system. I wonder how many points a pint is.

Rob said...

I had a pineapple dole whip in Disney and it was the greatest Ice Cream concoction ever

It really is. Especially how it's non-dairy.

I'd say my favorite flavor, though, is raspberry. They also have vanilla and chocolate. Haven't tried that yet.

Patrick said...

My weight fluxuates only 5 pounds.

allan said...

idiot fucking fan

laura k said...

I don't know what dole whip is but I love iced coffee. And if it's non-dairy, how can it be ice cream?

nixon33 said...

"Its Love. Its Love. Its Love. Its LALALALA" MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!! MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

bert: varitek going to the all-star game, francona is the manager, he's going to want to take a lot of his own players.

bremer (gently): of course, varitek getting in on the players' balloting ...

laura k said...

Nix, what are you on about? Is that an ad or sumpin?

allan said...

bert praising gomez on yook's hit. says with most outfielders, yook would have had a double.

yeah, he's so speedy. oy.

nixon33 said...

uh, its that song on that ad, i cant remember what the ad is (not effective apparently) but its crap pop shite!

Rob said...

Twins broadcasters get the legs.

laura k said...

The mute button is your friend. I never hear the ads.

nixon33 said...

i have my hands full while cooking!

Rob said...

Great catch by whoever that was!

nixon33 said...

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME WITH THAT PLAY?

laura k said...

Nice catch.

I think the Twins announcers are CLAPPING in the booth. Actually applauding.

Allan thinks it's b/c they're interviewing last night's pitcher and he's in the dugout, so we're hearing teammates clapping.

I hope that's what it is!

Patrick said...

"Its Love. Its Love. Its Love. Its LALALALA" MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!! MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just read this. Got my laughing aloud.

laura k said...

What are you cooking?

and

Will someone tell me what dole whip is?

allan said...

twins guys keep talking about how lester is at 120 IP now and the red sox do not want him to throw more than 180, so they are going to start having him go only 5 innings per start in the 2nd half.

did i miss something or are they making shit up?

Rob said...

non-fat/non-dairy frozen treat, like soft-serve ice cream, only much much colder. Anyone ever notice just how cold dole whip is?

nixon33 said...

im cooking penne w/ garlic and spinach, an a little crushed red pepper.

Rob said...

And it's got a TON of flavor. Very, very good.

laura k said...

Is this the company Dole, as the giant fruit corp?

Non-fat + non-dairy does not sound like my kind of "ice cream" (cream? non-dairy cream?).

The penne sounds yummy, tho!

laura k said...

plus it's got SPINACH, the good-luck vegetable

laura k said...

Also, real fruit flavour or artificial?

Rob said...

Manny, I don't need a fan. That's what a/c is for.

Patrick said...

I got the 'Cheesecake Brownie' flavor B&J. Not good. Not bad, but I'd much prefer something actually chocolaty. Not just cold sweet cream cheese.

Rob said...

Also, real fruit flavour or artificial?

Yes. They seem to use concentrate. And artificial flavors.

Patrick said...

These Twins are pesky.

Rob said...

Oops. That didn't work.

allan said...

damn it

Patrick said...

Has anyone ever seen a Sasquatch?

Maybe half a dozen or more of my friends from Kingston claim to have seen giant apes. I've read testimonials online since they told me, and all the descriptions match.

I'm a believer.

Rob said...

Maybe half a dozen or more of my friends from Kingston claim to have seen giant apes. I've read testimonials online since they told me, and all the descriptions match.

Oi. The Red Sox really are losing.

Patrick said...

trying to keep some type of conversation alive.

Rob said...

Where have they seen it, Patrick?

Patrick said...

In the woods, and only at night. And it's not like I think there is one mythical creature, but rather a species of north American apes.

Rob said...

In the woods, and only at night. And it's not like I think there is one mythical creature, but rather a species of north American apes.

That's interesting. I've never seen one. Then again, I've never looked.

At least they're better than those damn deer at stay out of the road.

nick said...

Youk booking it!

laura k said...

Triple? He's got to go for the cycle!

Patrick said...

Youk: You see that Dustin!?!? That's a single to you!

allan said...

i was into bigfoot as a young teen in the late 70s. there was a lot of talk of that then, along with the bermuda triangle and "chariots of the gods".

my family used to take july 4th vacation in the middle of maine, very rural, and i used to think about a bigfoot walking all the way across the country (!) to maine, wondering how long it would take.

Patrick said...

Oscar looks like a sasquatch. A more domestic variety.

Rob said...

I never had any worries about big foot. I used to worry about dinosaurs after I saw Jurassic Park. I was young.

Rob said...

I never had any worries about big foot. I used to worry about dinosaurs after I saw Jurassic Park. I was young.

allan said...

are you sure it isn't just a bunch of really hairy guys who like to go hiking?

LUGO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any chance of two more runs over two innings?

nick said...

the assassin!

Rob said...

I never had any worries about big foot. I used to worry about dinosaurs after I saw Jurassic Park. I was young.

Rob said...

Thank you, Blogger, for making me triple-post.

Benjamin said...

What are your thoughts on Bigfoot, ish?

laura k said...

Sorry, I am not holding up my end of the thread. I was off getting bad war resister news. :<(

I never knew Allan was afraid of Bigfoot!! Gamethreads are very educational.

Patrick said...

I don't know. I think I'd be more afraid of big hairy hiking men.

laura k said...

Any chance of two more runs over two innings?

Sure, why not?

laura k said...

I never found out, is that dole whip stuff real fruit or artificial flavour?

Rob said...

What are your thoughts on Bigfoot, ish?

I dono. I wouldn't want to find out whether a Big Foot is hostile or not. Be interesting to know if there was one or not. But I'm confident I'll never see one, so I'm not afraid about it.

Benjamin said...

Bigfoot never bugged me, but I was always skeptical of the Animal.

Rob said...

I never found out, is that dole whip stuff real fruit or artificial flavour?

There's fruit juice concentrate and artificial flavors. So, the answer would be yes.

allan said...

fuck, tito burns casey for gumball.

wow, reyes has the widest fat face ever

Rob said...

That was not a strike. But it was - it was a rookie strike.

Rob said...

I'd have had more confidence in Casey to hit against a lefty than gumball. But that's easy to say after the fact.

Patrick said...

Two of my friends say they were chased by an ape creatures. The ape could've easily overtaken them but it was basically just driving them away from some place.

Benjamin said...

More specifically, when the claws come out, the effective diameter of the wheel grows and mechanical leverage decreases. That should make it harder to move, not easier.

allan said...

when i saw bailey in there, i said the same thing. so we first guessed it.

laura k said...

There's a great Futurama episode w/ Bigfoot. Takes place in the Duraflame National Forest. It's Frye's childhood dream to meet Bigfoot.

laura k said...

Thanks Ish (dole whip info)

Rob said...

Sorry, I am not holding up my end of the thread. I was off getting bad war resister news. :<(

Oi, bad news indeed. :(

laura k said...

Ape creatures? Where did this happen?

nixon33 said...

this sucks. yanks winning, we're losing...

laura k said...

I don't know. I think I'd be more afraid of big hairy hiking men.

Wise.

Patrick said...

I remember being jealous of the kids in the commercials. They get to drive their R/C trucks on cascading water falls, etc.

nixon33 said...

TITO YOU FUCKING BOZO, WHY IS LESTER IN HERE?

Rob said...

I worry more about creatures we already know about when I'm in the woods, like bears and moose. Moose can be very hostile if they want to be.

Patrick said...

Ape creatures? Where did this happen?

Around here in Kingston. There is certainly enough room for them here, being that half of Kingston is an inaccessible bog.

Rob said...

Plus the last thing I want to do is have to defend myself against an animal.

Rob said...

Around here in Kingston. There is certainly enough room for them here, being that half of Kingston is an inaccessible bog.

That's just weird, though. Large ape creatures only few have seen, in Kingston, New Hampshire.

laura k said...

Hey, Nix is talking about the game.

Rob said...

Maybe they're just some weird dudes who came from Seabrook. That's not such a stretch.

Patrick said...

When I was in NFLD, I was taking a boat out around an inlet, and we ran into (not literally) a swimming moose that was on its way out to an island.

laura k said...

Bears and moose, yes. Ape creatures, no.

The chances of there being an undiscovered species of large mammals in North America is extremely remote.

Rob said...

So whatcha think... Triple play here?

allan said...

115 and counting for sid ...

Patrick said...

Not just few. And not just in Kingston. Although Danville is a bordering town.

Rob said...

The chances of there being an undiscovered species of large mammals in North America is extremely remote.

Especially southern New Hampshire. Maybe if it was in a more remote part of the northeast. Mountains of NW Maine, far northern NH, etc.
