G97: Red Sox 2, Orioles 1

Orioles - 000 000 001 - 1 7 1
Red Sox - 100 100 00x - 2 7 0
The Red Sox are back in first place (.5 GA)!

This was a long game (3:32) filled with plenty of baserunners, but very few runs. Boston stranded 11 runners in the first five innings. And until Aubrey Huff's single in tyhe ninth inning, Baltimore had six hits, seven walks, a hit batter and a stolen base -- and still had no runs.

Bot allowed three singles in the ninth, but slammed the door on the longest "first half" in team history (97 games) by retiring Melvin Mora (who stranded 11 runners all by himself).

Pedroia singled and took second on Freddie Bynum's throwing error in the second, then scored on Drew's double into the left field corner. Casey doubled to start the fourth and eventually scored on Pedroia's force out.

Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 5-2 and Toronto dispatched New York 4-1.

***

Daniel Cabrera (4.40, 95 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.84, 152 ERA+)

Terry Francona announced the rotation to start the second half, which begins Friday night in Anaheim:
0718 @ Angels - Clay Buchholz (6 days rest)
0719 @ Angels - Josh Beckett (9 days)
0720 @ Angels - Tim Wakefield (7 days)

0721 @ Mariners - Jon Lester (12 days)
0722 @ Mariners - Daisuke Matsuzaka (8 days)
0723 @ Mariners - Clay Buchholz
This will give both Josh Beckett and Jon Lester some extra rest.

At 1 PM:
Rays/Spiders
Yankees/Blue Jays

Does anyone else get the occasional squeee moment when they say "world champion Boston Red Sox"? It's not like I forget or anything, it's just that every now and then it excites me to be reminded.

Sarah Gates said...

Wow - hope they have enough munchies in the booth, because it sure sounds like they've been hitting the wacky tobaccy...

Turned the game on a minute late. Anyone know what got Orsillo and Remy in a laughing fit? It's been about 5 mins now and they're still incoherent.

redsock said...

doc says rays-clev 0-0 after 2.

i check gdgd and tampa is up 1-0 and still batting in the top of the 2nd.

jeez, don.

I really need to rearrange this room. The addition of the second cable box continues to make life much easier, but since I'm exiled to the back room with the game (I'm only bothered by that if I'm getting the game in HD, and that's not usually the case), I tend to sit at my desk to watch the game, and my desk faces away from the tv. Hmmm...

redsock said...

jays up 4-0, still in bot 2nd!

Come on Cleveland - give those Sunbeam appliances* some arachnophobia.

I'm home due to a rare off Sunday for big league. The Sox are on TBS and I've got a friend and some cold Coronas here ready to enjoy my 1st full game in quite a while. And DAMN if they don't have the #@$%^ game BLACKED OUT on TBS. Those MOTHERFUCKERS!
Oh well, I guess it's GDGD and JoS.
Thank g** for you guys!

G'afternoon

I'm at school today, and the 5th orientation session has just gotten underway. I'm watching on one of the plasma TVs in the dining hall, and this kid from NY sits down next to me and starts cheering on Baltimore.

I tell him, "you really ought to be rooting for the Red Sox."

He asked why, and I said "so Baltimore doesn't catch you for 3rd."

I hope I didn't give him a bad impression of the student body on his first day at orientation :-p

tim said...

Good afternoon fellow Jossers!

Joe Grav said...

Ohh, that would have been a good one.

Joe Grav said...

Much tamer than he'll probably get come September (I hope).

I hope that come September, nobody will give a rats ass about the Yankees since they will be in 3rd 14 games behind Boston

Thought of this while L and I drove in to work today:

Amy parody: "I can't keep these new-fangled stats straight. What does RBI stand for again?"

redsock said...

Then L had a Tim parody:

Joe Grav said...

Sarah Gates said...

'Tek's one advantage over a poor-hittting catcher is that he knows how to take a walk. His OBP is usually a decent amount above his BA (now 220/299).

Best way to do it is to hit a line drive right at him. Preferably the mid-section.

Yeah really, Cabrera has anger management issues. Which Don and Jerry have made a point to remind us of.

Add the southern-style sweet tea...

They have a commercial on the radio where there are two girls talking, and one of them has a heavy southern accent because she drank the mcdonald's sweet tea. The other girl says, "But you're from Connecticut." Southern-accent says, "Ah know! Ain't that just a kick in the pants!"

Shoot your radio.
