G8: Athletics 6, Red Sox 5 (12)

Red Sox - 300 020 000 000 - 5 12 1
Athletics - 500 000 000 001 - 6 11 2
Forget Dice's 1-5-5-2-0, 43 disaster of an inning, after being handed a 3-0 cushion. And don't even ask why Javier Lopez (.2-1-1-3-1, 25 (13 balls)) still has a job in Boston.

Just enjoy the fantastic 10.2-5-0-3-12 line put up by the quintet of Justin Masterson, Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon. (It's the most strikeouts from a Boston bullpen in a game since September 28, 2000.)

And know there is a game tomorrow (well, later today).

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (6.75, 77 ERA+) / Dana Eveland (4.50, 101 ERA+)

In a Extra Bases post, Adam Kilgore has a great line:
If the Red Sox were playing an NFL season, they would be about halfway through the third quarter of the first game.
Then, in a breath of fresh air and progressive thought, he talks about BABIP (and OPS+ and WHIP):
The Red Sox have a .250 batting average on balls put in play. (This means that if you take away home runs, sacrifices, and strikeouts, the Red Sox are batting .250.) The .250 mark is worst in the American League and better than only the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. The league average is .300. That means the Red Sox have run into some good defense, gotten unlucky, or both in relation to the rest of the majors.
SoSH also has a BABIP thread.

***

Lefty Eveland made 29 starts for the A's last year, posting a 4.34 ERA. He also walked 4.1 batters per nine innings (77 in 168 innings), excessive though not quite Diceian (97 in 167.2, 5.0).

BP 2009:
Almost a throw-in as part of the Haren deal, Eveland always showed plenty of potential on a pure stuff level, but he almost ate his way out of both the Milwaukee and Arizona organizations. Although he's still a big guy [6-1, 220], he fit in much better with a team that knows it isn't selling jeans. He pitched like the steal of the century in the first half, putting up a 3.46 ERA in his first 19 starts, but the wheels fell off after the All-Star break, when he posted a six-plus ERA and took a brief trip back to the minors when the Red Sox hammered him for nine runs in two innings [August 2]. ... He's an average, usable starter, which is all that the A's are expecting from him at the back end of their rotation this year.

Matt from Dirty Watah posted some pictures and audio clips from last night's game. He may have more from tonight's game.

Josh Beckett is appealing the suspension/fine:

"We were pretty shocked. I think the appeal kind of speaks for everything that we feel. ... We don't agree. I respect the job everybody has to do. But we don't agree. ... I don't really feel like I did anything. It's unfortunate. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. Am I supposed to go give him a hug? I wasn't really in a hugging mood right then. ...
They made their own judgement on it. I had two umpires tell me that I handled it great. One of them publicly said that. The other one told me twice, once when I was coming off the mound and once right afterwards."

tim said...

As much as I hate the Yankees, I'm enjoying this first-inning trouble the grand knobgobbler Garzer has got himself into.

tim said...

1 run off bases loaded, no outs? wow MFY MFin suck.

Rob said...

MFY FKR games are times where you want to see LOTS and LOTS of LOB and LOTS of pitches thrown.

allan said...

Tito, last night: "Tomorrow will have nothing to do with today. [Matsuzaka] will have to pound the strike zone, try not to let anything linger."

allan said...

I always want the Yankees to lose. All-fucking-ways. No matter what. If it's to the Rays, well, we'll deal with that later on.

tim said...

Yeah, a 0-162 season in NY would be fuckin' great. I was sort of hoping for a 10 run first from MFY, smoking Garzer out of the game, then an 11 run bottom half from FKR off of Burnett.

That mo'fucker's got a no hitter going.

Jere said...

Why does that "balls put in play" thing not count home runs? We should be rooting for our dongs to hit the wall so it can count in that category?

BURNETT PITCHING A NO-HITTER thru 4

tim said...

Say what you will about this 80s graffiti show (Da Brixx), I am enjoying it very much.

allan said...

Why does that "balls put in play" thing not count home runs?*

Because HRs cannot be caught. For BABIP, the ball is technically not "in play", it's sailing "out of play" (out of reach).

***

Hey Blogger, fix the fooking paragraph breaks.

Jere said...

No, I know how the stat is set up, but what's the point of leaving HRs out of a hitting stat? Like, if ten of our flyouts were changed to home runs, we might be 7-0, yet that stat would still show us at .250.

allan said...

I agree. It seems logical for HR to count. They are goods for hitters and bad for pitchers. It should be reflected in the BABIP stats.

tim said...

BABIP isn't meant to be a reflection of a team's record, rather shows what happened to balls hit within the field - essentially to show what redsock said - a team's luck. HR is an HR, independent of the fielding team's actions. I see what you're saying Jere, it makes sense, but I don't think its part of the overall scope of BABIP.

allan said...

Here's a shocker: Some of the Globe writers are pissing me off.

***

Has anyone read or wants to read David Carr's "The Night Of The Gun"? Got it from the library today.

Benjamin said...

BABIP is something of a matter of luck for pitchers. It isn't for hitters, though luck helps -- you can raise your BABIP just by hitting the ball harder. I'm not sure why people treat it as such.

tim said...

Unless the rules define "putting the ball in play" as when the pitcher "puts the ball in play"

tim said...

you can raise your BABIP just by hitting the ball harder. That it? Just whack the fuck out of it?

:P

tim said...

Gah wtf blogger with your silly lack of paragraphs.

Jere said...

thru six for AJ. A no-hitter, that is.

allan said...

My mind can be swiss cheese, but wasn't BABIP first used by McCracken to show that pitchers have little or no control over the baseball once it leaves their hand?

Meaning all pitchers year to year have BABIPs that go up or down without any reason other than luck, that no pitcher can control where the ball is hit.

(Just like a hitter's stats "in the clutch" can go from .400 to .150 to .400 over three seasons.)

Jere said...

After last night here, I thought that was the new hip thing--to start writing RIGHT after what you quoted. Kinda streamlined.

allan said...

And MFY staff ace Swisher has donged.

Errrm, let's go Rays.

nixon33 said...

FUCKING BURNETT

Benjamin said...

Harder hit balls are harder to field, and not just the ones that leave the park. You can also influence defensive positioning somewhat by not always pulling the ball, so they don't adopt a goofy shift against you.

nixon33 said...

I'd like to see a bloop to ruin the no-no and then watch him implode.

nixon33 said...

THERE'S THE BLOOP, NOW THE IMPLOSION!

Fucking worthless jam shit from CI

Good job by TB getting out of that with just one run given up. Bring in Phil Coke!

I feel dirty rooting for either team.

TIE IT UP, RAYS

i fear i'm getting the choakland tonight.

allan said...

she ain't there for her interviewing skills. or thinking ability.

Jere said...

This A's pitcher should name his kid C.L.

allan said...

staats and kennedy still whining about some call in favour of the yankees from innings past. saying the call on the navarro foul bunt evened things up, sort of.

allan said...

i imagine staats talking to kennedy on day 1 and telling him to whine and piss and moan on any call against the rays, whether the guy was out by an inch or 15 feet. "that's what we dohere."

allan said...

fucking goddamn shit-eating rays

allan said...

allan said...

ACK -- I got a hockey game on the Sox/A's channel!!!!!!!!!

Jere said...

tim said...

Hoping for a big game from Papi. I just don't feel the zen I used to about him. It seems like every time he steps up to the plate it's gonna be a letdown.

Rob said...

ACK -- I got a hockey game on the Sox/A's channel!!!!!!!!! • Hmm strange! There are no hockey games on tonight.

Rob said...

Anybody notice how NESN's gone wide-screen HD style for standard definition? This is strange. It's like watching NBC.

Benjamin said...

Yay a hit.

Jere said...

Jesus, the Nazi just struck out the side on 10 pitches. Game over.

Amy said...

A hit!

Rob said...

Nomar showing his excellent range...

nick said...

Howdy.

I've got my annual report due tomorrow, so I'm gonna try not to be here too much, but I will have the game on, and I was considering the pleasures of run-on sentences, but decided not to engage and FY has an honest-to-goodness hit which is delightful.

nixon33 said...

could nesn make the score line any smaller?

allan said...

predators at sharks

Benjamin said...

Rays lose.

tim said...

Yeah I'm getting the regular-ass NESN in widescreen.

nick said...

whoah, that is weird, Ish. makes the graphic smaller and thus harder to see for my crappy eyes.

tim said...

NO LET DOWNS PAPI

tim said...

Kurt Suzuki's yellow right shoulder pad trips me out.

Rob said...

That was almost a let-down. Some umpires would call that a swing too.

tim said...

yeah, close call there.

Anonymous said...

Are you guys talking about mlb.tv or are you watching a stream?

tim said...

Fucking shift.

Amy said...

Papi, where is your power?

tim said...

I'm watching NESN on DirecTV.

allan said...

Eveland Longoria?

Joe Grav said...

yo

Jere said...

Nomar should sprint to second and the pitcher should cover third on that.

Joe Grav said...

yeah it's Widescreen crap here, too

Jere said...

I'm also getting widescreen on NESN on a regular TV, with tiny score bar

Rob said...

Are you guys talking about mlb.tv or are you watching a stream? • I'm watching on basic cable.

tim said...

There it is, back to normal.

Jere said...

whoa, it just whooshed into normal mode. (he said, like everybody else)

allan said...

The A's feed's bar looks fucking fine.

tim said...

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!

Benjamin said...

!

Jere said...

clap clap effin clap

Rob said...

They've now fixed the widescreen HD mess. Back to normal.

And YOOOOOOOOUK doing what he does!

nixon33 said...

mine just switched back to normal format bummer!
youk!

Amy said...

Yay! A run! Lots of Youk cheers there in Oakland.

allan said...

The Boston Yooks score a run!!!

Benjamin said...

These shitty road unis look so much better with red undershirts.

DREW!

tim said...

That would've looked amazing

YOOOOOK WHEELZAZZZZZZZ

Jere said...

NICE!!!!!!!

Amy said...

BATS! They found their bats!

Rob said...

The reason why the graphics were so small with widescreen is because they were taking the HD picture and squeezing it into a regular standard definition 4:3 ratio screen. So you get widescreen and tiny graphics.

allan said...

DJ WERD!!!

DESTROY!

tim said...

As I was saying - that NESNHD looks like it'll be great when I get a widescreen HDTV...whenever that may be...

Unknown said...

TWO clutch hits in a row?! Where has THIS lineup been for the last week?

Jere said...

Bay ambles

Benjamin said...

Waulk.

tim said...

Waulk.Tim does not approve of this message.

Rob said...

As I was saying - that NESNHD looks like it'll be great when I get a widescreen HDTV...whenever that may be...It really is fantastic. I was able to watch a Bruins game on HD at my grandmother's house back around New Year's. Incredible.

But we probably won't get an HDTV until they go out of style and the next big thing comes along.

tim said...

MIKEY!!!!!
WOW! RUNS OMGZ!

Amy said...

I am starting to feel better.

Rob said...

This is strange. Runs are being scored. By the Red Sox!

Unknown said...

THREE CLUTCH HITS!

allan said...

A's PEN UP!!!!

allan said...

long wait for dice?

tim said...

Yeah, I've been lucky enough to see a bunch of Sox/Bs games on big HDs, amazing. Last summer the student place I was living at had a 42"er and there were a ton of Sox games in HD on. It was amazing. I have access to that house this year too!

tim said...

Load them shits up for Greensy/terrible nickname

tim said...

Again with the lack of paragraphs.

Rob said...

If we got an HDTV I'd probably not be threading as much until I had a laptop, haha.

allan said...

is green money?

Amy said...

Ish, your kitty is beautiful. Looks like a distant cousin of my two.

Jere said...

Is money green? (it is)

tim said...

is that a HOT WATER BOTTLE???

I forgot those things existed

tim said...

Is Shit Green?

When you strike out with the bases loaded, it is.

Jere said...

eh, I guess he was Canadian money

Rob said...

Amy, in late January I put the car in the garage and went to get out and I saw what looked like a skunk walking on the trash cans and the furniture and tables next to where the car was. Right at eye level. Saw it was a kitty! She immediately climbed up above the rafters of our garage and started to live there.

Benjamin said...

Embedded Yankee.

allan said...

Jere: HEY!!!

39 pitches for shitarm

tim said...

eh, I guess he was Canadian moneyTrue, he may still be worth something in 5 years.

Amy said...

Ish, great story! A rescue cat. I guess she (he?) was smart and found a good family. I assume she comes inside now from the photo?

tim said...

There's the cache creek ad again

Amy said...

Uch, let's not blow the lead in the first. Please.

Rob said...

I kept the side door open a little bit so she could come and go. Three or four days later I thought maybe I should put some food down. See if it'll eat. Put some cat food in the garage, couple hours later it was all gone. Few more days later she peeked her head over from where she was sleeping. Couple more days later during a snow storm I finished snowblowing and she came down and said hello. And my goodness she was thin.

tim said...

GIVE HIM 6 GAMES!!!

allan said...

i have 39 pitches for eveland, a's tv says 40. anyone have gdgd up?

L says hi

Benjamin said...

Five-pitch walk, runners on first and second with none out...good to see Dice return to his 2008 form.

Jere said...

I just meant Canadian money isn't green. It isn't, right?

allan said...

$20 is green

tim said...

C'mon Dice, get Hollidayey out!

Benjamin said...

Shit.

Amy said...

Poor cat---homeless in winter! No idea where she came from? Was she full grown already?

Whoa. Off the wall. Damn. I hate DiceK sometimes.

tim said...

COCK GOBBLERS.

Rob said...

We decided to bring her in from the unheated garage into our mud room that was heated. Made a makeshift litter box and gave her food and water... She was definitely a domestic cat... We think she was brought out to the country and dumped. Took her to the vet, got her checked out, shaved some of her fur where it had matted real bad. And we kept her. There were no reports of lost cats, etc.

Few months later she's very healthy and well fed and amazingly enough, she plays! The vet estimated that she had been out since the autumn because she had burrs in her fur!

Unknown said...

Gaah, I guess it's not 2008 Dice-K.

Amy said...

I am back to feeling crappy.

laura k said...

hi all

Rob said...

No idea where she came from. She had gotten into the neighbor's basement for a time as well.

It's been close to three months since we brought her in and she has made no indication what so ever that she wants to go outside. I can't imagine what it must've been like for her. Especially on those sub-zero nights. She won't have to deal with that again, that's for sure.

By the way, she's a Norwegian forest cat, according to my research.

allan said...

lbj needs to learn to play shit off the wall and not leap for evetyhing.

laura k said...

yay for stray cat rescues

Benjamin said...

Fucking shitfucking fuck fuck.

laura k said...

boo for tied game

tim said...

Fuck!

Goddamn Custy!

Amy said...

Wow, Ish, I love your family! People after my own heart. We rescued a stray when I was a kid---great cat, but he would never come inside. My parents have rescued a few more since then. We have never had to---not many strays out here in the suburbs. But we always get our cats from shelters if we can.

SHIT. I knew we would blow the lead. UCH.

Joe Grav said...

The two pitchers are either going to settle down or it's going to be another 19-17 free-for-all. Maybe somewhere in between.

a 4 fucking walk to fucking nomar.

Amy said...

OK, I am done whining. I am just going to watch and keep my negativity to myself. (Figured I'd say it myself before someone else did.)

We can't win games with shitty pitching this year. It can't be done.

Come on Dicey, get Suzukiey to GIDP!
