Red Sox - 020 000 060 - 8 10 1Wakefield pitched 7.1 no-hit innings and went the distance for his 31st career complete game. After the pen was spent after Tuesday night, Wakefield did exactly what the Red Sox needed.
Athletics - 000 000 011 - 2 4 0
Mike Lowell hit a two-run home run in the second inning. His fielding error to start the sixth ruined Wakefield's shot at a perfect game. For the first seven innings, Wakefield's pitch count was ridiculously low: 30 through 5 innings, 54 through 6, 67 through 7. He began to tire at that point, allowing six base runners (and two runs) over the last two innings and throwing 44 pitches. He finished with a 9-4-2-2-4, 111 line.
Eight consecutive Red Sox batters reached base after two were out in the eighth inning. J.D. Drew's three-run dong broke the game open, giving Boston a 5-0 lead.

Daisuke Matsuzaka has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. Left-handed reliever Hunter Jones has been summoned from Pawtucket and may arrive at the park during today's game.
Terry Francona, after speaking with trainer Mike Reinhold this morning:
I don't think there's an injury. It just looks like there's some fatigue. Kind of like last year, where he's got to build it back up and feel good about himself.***
Tim Wakefield (4.50, 113 ERA+) / Brett Anderson (7.50, 60 ERA+)
Another game in Oakland, another young lefty.
BP 2009:
... it looks as if Anderson will turn out to be the best player brought to Oakland in the [Haren] exchange. The son of a pitching coach, he was the most polished pitcher in the Arizona system as a teenager, but scouts were always turned off by his dumpy, unathletic frame. Last spring, he came to camp 25 to 30 pounds lighter and took another step forward because of it, with his low-90s fastball grading up because of its excellent movement and location. Unlike most pitchers his age [21], Anderson has advanced secondary offerings and an excellent feel for his craft. He's moving up rapidly, could be in Oakland by the end of the year, and has All-Star potential.Wakefield needs to go at least six innings, as the bullpen pitched 10.2 innings last night and most of the relievers went multiple innings, including Justin Masterson (4 innings, 60 pitches), Manny Delcarmen (1.2, 36), Hideki Okajima (2, 28). Also, Javier Lopez has pitched in each of the last three games.
Who's available? Takashi Saito was the only reliever to not work yesterday. Jonathan Papelbon did not pitch on Sunday or Monday and threw only 16 pitches last night. Ramon Ramirez would be the third guy, I suppose. Can Chris Carter pitch?
Win or lose this afternoon, the day off on Thursday will be most welcome.

5-0. pressure off. Well, the one kind.
Thats the best revenge to the up and in (AND the intentional walk)
Yayyy!
Way to make 'em pay for that intentional walk.
Man, if Drew could just find a way to stay healthy.
YES!
Bam. 40.50 ERA.
I love how no one's talking to Wake. Acting like he's not even there.
40.50 ERAWorse than the Wang's.
shit - long wait for wake?
The MFYs started playing at 4:08 and are only entering the top of the fourth.
shit - long wait for wake? Not as big a deal with the knuck i think.
Stopping by a break from work to say - FUCKIN EH! LETS DO THIS WAKE!
andrew dice clay at cache creek!
Now I'm re-pissed at Lowell because if he goes 8.2, I'm gonna be sitting here going, He should have it already. And Lowell's offense is no longer the one thing giving us the lead.
Okay, Lowell trying to atone even more...
PA announcer at the Coliseum only announces the names. "....Nick.. Green."
I like gamblin'. But Cache Creek = teh suq.
Holy crap, we've gotten five consecutive guys to reach base. They need to do that more often.
E changes everything. Lowell makes that play, who knows, we might be down 9-2 right now.
Make that six consecutive!
Torn here. Keep the offense going or take a backwards K and get back to work.
E changes everything. Lowell makes that play, who knows, we might be down 9-2 right now. • And that's baseball.

Seven consecutive!
Yeah, seriously not liking the long wait.
A's pen trying to match Wakefield's pitch count in this one inning.
Torn here. Keep the offense going or take a backwards K and get back to work.
Yeah, I kinda want to get to the bottom of the inning...
... but at the same time I'd like to see Ellsbury get off his schnide.
By the way, Green raised Blevins's ERA to 54.00.
Wake looks at Penny, turns and looks at Youk. Neither look back. Slight smile to himself.
lol this WOULD happen, wouldn't it...
8-0 our team.
How would you feel returning to the bench and having Wake put his hand out for a high-five?
Yayyy ... I guess.
Wake looks at Penny, turns and looks at Youk. Neither look back. Slight smile to himself.
Heh :D
Amazing that all of this coming with 2 out.
8 consecutive!
And Lyndon's first RBIs of the season.
RALLY all with 2 outs and no one on!!!!!!!!
How would you feel returning to the bench and having Wake put his hand out for a high-five?
Haha that would be great... did he do that??
How would you feel if Wake was accidentally sitting on your hand and it was starting to fall asleep?
Canoe HR makes it 2-2 Yanks-Rays.
Swisher scored on the HR. Nady's apparently going on the DL.
Grant, he went over with everyone to high-five the incoming runners.
yayyy
Damn Nady. I wanted to see Swisher pitch more.
Wake looked calm. Like I wouldn't be surprised if he was reading the newspaper on the bench.
How would you feel if Wake was accidentally sitting on your hand and it was starting to fall asleep?
Grant, he went over with everyone to high-five the incoming runners.
Wake is one of my favorite people ever :D
We've scored 21% of this season's runs this game.
Jere I'd probably tell myself, well it's not like I'm pitching or anything. I can swing one-handed...
Yeah, Allan. Wake looks more amused than anything of what's occuring.
How would you feel if Wake was accidentally sitting on your hand and it was starting to fall asleep?
Nothin but knucks, cmon...
2-0 count a fastball at 67.
Another fastball.
Lowell breathes an epic sigh of relief...
Now Lowell's E is fine.
get a dp immediately please
Alright, keep calm, how about a DP?
A's feed showing Curt's 1-hitter.
Last two pitches to Ellis were knuckles... First two to Buck knucklers.
Phew!!!! Pitter patter pitter patter.
I LOVE EVERYBODY
that was a LONG run for ellsbury
Different tenor in the game thread than last night that's for sure, Grant.
FAIL.
Solid single.
I HATE... all of you...
Shit.
Oh, well, at least it wasn't with two outs in the ninth!
The life of the knuckleball.
Poo.
sheeeeeit.
oh well - the pen is saved.
and we'll win big.
Not going to complain about this outing though.
You know what, I don't even care about that. It's the eighth inning and we have a lead for once.
I'm so deflated :( Who deserves it more than Wake?
C'mon, we can still get a complete game shutout!
he can still get the mildly-coveted one-hitter.
You know what, I don't even care about that. It's the eighth inning and we have a lead for once.
Yeah, at 2-6, don't complain!
I just want him to get out of the 8th on one more pitch. There goes the shutout.
Saito up.
At least I can finally pee.
all i care about is that after 2003, wakefield was there in 2004.
get me talking about how happy that makes me and i'll be teary-eyed inside of 30 seconds.
... make that 10 seconds.
Alright Wake, let's keep this from turning into a rally.
Jere there's always a bright side.
shit, i had to go to the tissue just typing that post.
94 pitches.
Leave him in for the ninth?
I'll be fine with Wake in for the 9th. I'll also be fine with Saito.
It's an off day tomorrow.
Wow, Wake almost did it! I could not believe it as I was driving to school and was dying to get out of the car and stop and watch the game. But alas, as soon as I pulled into the parking lot, the no-no was gone, and by the time I got into my office and booted up the computer, so was the shutout. Oh, well, I still am very happy for Wakefield and for the team! Oh, and for me!
Lowell and Wake look like a couple of 40somethings reminiscing about that time in college where they put their frat buddy's hand in lukewarm water and made him pee himself.
Good day for #42 in gray.
Got to go get ready for class, so enjoy the rest of the game for me, everyone. Perhaps we have turned a corner? Pitchers and batters waking up?
I wanted this one for Wakefield, but I suppose everyone did.
Rish saying the Orioles off to a surprising 6-2 start... I mean who'da thunk that?
About that whole small sample size thing. O's got out of the gate quickly in... '07 I think as well.
Wake's coming back out.
So "Extra Innings Extra" is now "Red Sox Final." I hate it less.
I agree Jere.
i want him to stick around and pass cy young and fat billy in wins.
I wanna see a smooth DP turned to end this.
Crap.
Meh. Good thing we have insurance runs.
You could tell with Wake a few innings ago where he'd go 2-0 quickly then get back to the fastball... First 6 innings or so all those knucklers looked the same. Starting in the 6th the knuckleball started floating a couple different ways. Squeaked through O-Cab with fastballs then went back to the knuckler.
Now it's staying up and they're hitting it.
But we've got 2 outs so maybe he can muster three more low ones and get on the plane.
the fuck plane?
Alright, let's finish this up, I'm getting hungry out here on the East Coast.
The water is DIRRRTY. Get on the fuck plane.
Water!
That'll do it.
CG win. Rare in itself.
OK, it's a win. They've been hard to come by, so far.
Thank you Wake - Signed: The Boston Bullpen
Good times. More games like this one, please.
Lets hope this starts a hot streak.
WOOHOO!
