Rangers - 130 000 300 000 - 7 7 0Kevin Youkilis's two-out double off the wall in left-center scored Marco Scutaro with the winning run in the 12th inning. The hit - Yook's second double of the night - came after Texas walked Dustin Pedroia intentionally.
Red Sox - 014 110 000 001 - 8 9 1
Three Dong Night: Mike Lowell hit a solo shot in the second, J.D. Drew wrapped a grand slam around the Pesky pole in the third, and Darnell McDonald launched one to dead center in the fourth. (Lowell's single drove in Youkilis in the fifth.)
Beckett had a rough night (7-6-7-5-4, 115; 6 ER), but in the middle of his outing retired 12 of 14 batters. After he departed, the pen (5-1-0-0-6) was superb.
Daniel Bard threw two perfect inning (K, 1-3, K; PF2, F9, K), Jonathan Papelbon was sharp in the 10th (needing only five pitches) and 11th (1B, 643DP, 5-3; K, 6-3, 5-3) and Hideki Okajima cruised through the 12th (K, K, 4-3).Matt Harrison / Josh Beckett

Left over from yesterday, but -- what exactly is wrong about the term RISP? It's inaccurate because there's no guarantee they'll score in any event, whether it's from second or third?
Yeah. You are "in a position to score" from any base on the field, including when you are at-bat.
Bases empty and a guy at the plate = one man in scoring position.
And we have seen many cases of a player on second not scoring on a single; hell, earlier this year, Dumbo couldn't go from second to third on a single to left!
Plus announcers often say things like (with a guy on second) "a single here would tie the game". That's not actually true. Inaccurate information like that would confuse a new fan.
And it's not like it's a good shorthand for something else. As Allen Barra has pointed out, not only is saying "runners at second or third" more accurate than "runners in scoring position", it uses 7 syllables instead of 8.
Plus the acronym is RATS!
Our lineup is a little depressing right now, though I love seeing Lowell in over Ortiz.
The bottom four are not very inspiring.
Second and third would be RAST, but I changed it. Super creative!
Nothing wrong with saying third and second. It's like when an author writes someone "got down on their knees and hands"
No one says it that way, curiously.
There I was posting in the wrong place, looking for NESN Plus. Fortunately, I found it on my own.
Nice stop, Josh.
That was brutal fielding.
Another come-from-behind win...?
I can't believe the Cubs have moved Zambrano to the 'pen. His first start was admittedly disastrous, but he hasn't been *that* bad since.
femur!
borbon: .122 OBP!
microwave not having a nice day out there
Piss.
beckett being squeezed here and there, but not enough for 4 BB...
GDGD has the appeal at 3B as a pickoff attempt!
just when i thought watching baseball might be somewhat fun again ...
Scary to think that last night it was only 1-0 after two innings.
But there is something less disturbing about a pitcher just giving up runs. Although the BB's are pretty bad.
Pitchfx says that Beckett's getting boned pretty hard by the ump. At least 4/40 pitches are clear strikes called as balls.
Of course, he's grooving a few pitches as well.
Thank God for FY.
This score looks so familiar. How often in the last umpteen games have we fallen behind 4-0?
22 minute wait for harrison
rx
Yay, Mike!
22 minute wait for harrison
?
DR DR DR
Down 4-0 in first 15 games?
Game #s: 9, 11, 12, 13, 15.
In 4 of last 5 games!
I see Beltre did take a walk last week sometime. Wow.
Like I said, it was a familiar score.
At least Lowell managed to get it changed quickly.
long inning for one side, orsillo loves to note how long of a wait the pitcher had once he gets back out on the mound. he must use a timer. part of the d.o. drinking game.
This ump is ridiculous -- the strike zone is literally 9-12 inches larger for Texas than for Boston so far.
brian o'nora behind the plate
bottom of the order doing the work.
Love how they're pitching around McDonald after last night.
Don't love how our starting pitching likes to spot our opponents a few runs right off the bat.
Please don't make Castig say the word "squander". It causes me pain.
get started. start a fire.
If this was Daisuke pitching, I'd think there was only a 50/50 chance of anyone scoring.
jesus -- too low shithead
FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO FUCKING WAY!!!!
Holy shit.
BOOM
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
if he bothered to care a bit more, that would have been a 6-run homer.
The sox chances of winning this game is getting very ERECT!
lol
dealing with dogs, missed that 1/2 inning
WOW
why is tito the idiot batting this stud 8th!!!
Yes, WOW!
Has he driven in a run on every official at bat?
Hi everyone.
Seemed pretty clear upon replay that Borbon five-holed Varitek and scraped the plate, but Borbon's arm quickly bounced off Varitek's leg, and the ump (whose view was completely obscured) blew it.
Gee, I had to leave for a bit, and I see we are ahead!! WTF? How'd that happen? (Not that I am complaining, but I just don't remember being ahead for such a long time, except for the last hit last night.)
beginning of 3rd:
mcdonald BB
hall single
scutaro single
drew grand slam!
mcdonald donged (!) to dead center in the 4th.
I haven't seen a catcher in the league better at blocking the plate then Tek....
Microwave....livin the dream
FYDP

solo HR
1.000 OBP
Thanks, Allan, for the update.
This McDonald guy---is he for real?

This McDonald guy---is he for real?
He was a 1st round draft pick....he may be a late bloomer , and also may play CF for a while for us.
another house call from the doctor.
I think we have a new DH. Yay, Mike!
Wall-ball single. Would that have been a double if Lowell still had hips?
Would the lineup be better with Lowell at third and Papi DHing?
soxprospects on mcdonald, who is 31:
Superb athlete, plus speed. He's shown an average bat during his long career at the Triple-A level, both in terms of power and contact. That being said, he's had some extended flashes of excellence on the offensive end. Mediocre plate discipline. Defensively, he has very good range, but he doesn't get the best jumps.
Tek back to his K'ing ways.
Wow, I get out to school and check in...love it!
Tek quickly runs back to the dugout to get his shin guards.
don't think so, casey.
lowell is a statute in the field and beltre's bat is better than ortiz's at this point.
a strict L/R platoon at DH might be the way to go for now.

Tek back to his K'ing ways.
He heplep stop a run so he is +1
Well, that's interesting about McDonald. Perhaps he has finally matured at the plate?

so no improvement in the hip at all?
My cartoon at the DirtDogs site alludes to McDonald's Scottish name - but I just noticed that he has what looks like the word "Braveheart" tattooed on his neck! He really is Scottish! Wooo!!
last thing i read said he wasn't very mobile, but i may have missed more recent stuff. i guess until we see him out there we won't really know.
sox w/rats: 3 for 3!
beckett retired 11 of last 13.
Yeah, I don't think Lowell's going to be displacing Beltre as the 3B regular anytime soon. He definitely should be getting a few hundred at bats this season though.
McDonald was also suspended for steroids as a minor leaguer.
Maybe was discussed last night, but I can't even remember acquiring McDonald.
OTT, I love you.
microwave signed as free agent november 24, 2009.
And here he is. Do it again, Microwave.
on base
5 for 5
On base again.
a ted cox-ian start.
1.000 OPB intact?
set that table
let's go, mr. rbi!
beckett pc: 20-29-15 7-10-13 = 94
MFY fans from The Bar here in San Francisco are doing their annual bus trip to Oakland to watch the Yanks. So special prayers go out to Ben Sheets to shut them down.
not writing E3 because it should be changed to a single.
rangers 32 for their last 32 SB attempts vs sox
bard up
Random note: Eric Hinske just hit a blooper off Roy Halladay into LF and somehow waddled into second (on ESPN). It was hilarious to watch.
ouch
Uh oh. DAMN
mcdonald is up 6th this inning ...
Waiting on GDGD to fire up. Not liking the uh-oh comment
More medicine?
Grand Salamis by us = good
3-Run hmers by them = not so good.
2 3-run innings by Beckett, eh? Jiminy, earn that freaking contract, man!
beckett: 7-6-7-5-4, 115 (6 ER)
Beckett Will Improve.
He Must.
I'm sure Allan has already noted this, but....
Last Red Sox player to homer in his first 2 games with the team?
Sam Horn!
i did not know that -- though i guess i would have seen it later tonight.
riding the bard train!
SCORE
OTT!
I like this Bard kid. Have I mentioned lately.......nevermind :)
snuff up
tek (K, FC, K, K) learning about "regressing to the mean".
do it again, pls
i guess he's human after all.
Aaaaagh McDonald finally retired!
Hi all. Why is it that I can only seem to find time to thread from 37,000 feet lately? I'm somewhere between Detroit and San Francisco. Looks like a good game.
Man, I hate when they act human
Soriano = 2B shy of the cycle.
Looks like a good game.
Too early to tell, imho....
I like the idea of two walkoffs in a row.
Westcoastsox, you spend a lot of time on the road. Makes me remember why I didn't want to practice law!
bard is pwning young
bard looks like he has gotten more of his shit together lately.
... time to win.
Sit!
Amy, it has been brutal lately. I'm looking forward to 2 weeks at home before having to go back across the country. Let's go walkoff!
Walk-off time!
Crap. Ron Washington makes the correct move by putting Feliz in here.
No extra innings, please.
101?
Hmm, hot pitching there.
101 mph?
I would not anyone beaned by one of those pitches.
gdgd had that ball 2 upstairs at 102.
Some more fire, please.
102 mph! What's the record for fastest pitch?
nothing definitive on the fastest pitch.
GDGD had every called strike outside the strike zone.
Uch, extra innings.
extra innings, extra wine!
feliz:
99, 101, 101
99, 100, 100, 101, 102, 100
101, 101, 101, 101, 99
168 mph.
On Joel Zumaya's Wikipedia page, it explains that using Enhanced Gameday by MLB, he was clocked at 104.8 mph, and I there are claims that was the fastest pitch.
damn, bonus baseball.
I like baseball, Drew, but would rather have been done with it for the night.
I can't stand watching Papelbon pitch these days. Sad.
106 sticks in my mind.
research into the ways the fastest pitch had been attempted to be clocked would be pretty fascinating.
DfuckingP!!!
As I said. Can't stand it.
damn bot
Thanks, Vlad.
DP, please.
OK, guys, please do not subject me to another inning of Papelbon.
WOWZERS!
5 pitches = 3 outs.
Thanks for swinging at a pitch at Varitek's foot, Vlad.
FY
Yook
Dr.
Cactus
bruins in double OT?
5 pitches. Rangers helping out by hacking away
research into the ways the fastest pitch had been attempted to be clocked would be pretty fascinating.
Dalkowski and laser measurements, yeah.
Judging by comments I see before I post mine, I'm thinking GDGD is a little behind tonight
Truped me there.
106 sticks in my head. (106.8?)
but those old fb tests were not in a game.
i may be nothing but an unassuming country doctor ...
I'm thinking GDGD is a little behind tonight
Probably about 10 seconds behind the NESN feed.
i'll be happy when feliz is done.
23 pit thru 2?
maybe that's it?
23 pitchs for Feliz. Is he done at least?
feliz pc before tonight:
18, 13, 10, 18, 18
23 should be it.
Each team has 7 runs and 7 hits in the 11th inning. Suddenly, I'm craving a Slurpee.
bot looking sharp, amy.
nippert up for tex
Now who?
bot at 15 -- could he do a bit more? tito will probably go with jeemer in the 12th. (not that there will be a 12th, of course.)
Snake eyes, seven-eleven, don't let me down tonight.
nippert in for rangers.
now we can hit the ball!
Who is this guy on the mound and how did he get Papelbon's jersey?
Yes, he looked okay tonight after the leadoff hit. Maybe Feliz made him determined not to look washed up before 30.
Papelbon should be done. I'm pretty sure Okajima and Delcarmen are better than anybody else Texas has left.
Joaquin Arias sure is funny looking.
Now who?
Hopefully nobody.
Win, please!
re nippert - the sox are his master's voice.
been downstairs with nesn on puter. laura home now, may go up btw innings and suffer thru tex annc
varite-KKKK
Just noticed that Tek is not wearing the high socks. Strange.
fuck, pitches are 15 mph slower, still K-ing
Hi thread. I just got home from war resisters and beer drinking. Didn't expect the game to still be going.
here we go
OK, rookie. Do it!
Oki?
Battery down to 50%, not sure it's going to last the game.
Hi, Laura. Neither did we. I am not a fan of the extra innings.
Oh jeez. I thought McDonald was going to crush that hanging slider for sure.
I am not sure I am going to last the rest of the game either. My own personal battery is running low.
time to leave the building
I come home from meetings with high battery power.
We must win this inning. Please.
I'm not sure whose bullpen this is, but I hope we can keep them.
I believe that's 15 straight, isn't it? 6 each by Bard and Bot, 3 for Jeemer?
Oh, forgot the 1 hit against Bot
Those were also Okajima's first two Ks of the season.
Amy, it's ok to go to sleep if you need to. We will get the win for you.
18 sox in a row retired.
Holy shit, the turbulence on this flight is unbelievable. Going to have to stop looking at the computer soon.
And it's the same Sox who scored 7 runs earlier in the game (apart from LF).
But the DP does make it only 15 batters, even if 1 reached.
Thanks, Laura. :) But I will sit a bit longer.
Hey, we have a guy on base!
Ohh, turbulence. I am reaching for the xanax just thinking about it.
