G87: Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 5

Red Sox - 131 000 000 - 5 11 0
Blue Jays - 300 221 01x - 9 11 1
The Red Sox got to Morrow (4-8-5-2-4, 112) early, but Lackey turned in a giant turd of an outing (4.2-8-7-6-2, 105).

It could have been far worse. Lackey wriggled out of a bases loaded/1 out jam in the first -- only two of his 28 pitches in that inning were taken for strikes. He left two more runners on in the third.

The Red Sox did not make much noise over the final six innings.

Blue Jays' pitchers hit four Boston batters, including one in three consecutive innings (6th, 7th, 8th).

Mike Cameron and Terry Francona were both ejected in the seventh after Cameron was called out on strikes by Jeff Kellogg. Pitch f/x data shows that Kellogg was quite generous to Toronto pitchers when facing LH Boston batters (though the pitch to Cameron was clearly in the zone).

The Mariners beat the Yankees 4-1, as Felix went the distance and Joba loaded the bases in the eighth and then served up a grand slam to Jose Lopez. The Rays shut out Cleveland 4-0 and are 2 GB. Boston stays 5 GB.
Example
John Lackey / Brandon Morrow
Scutaro, SS
Nava, LF
Ortiz, DH
Youkilis, 1B
Beltre, 3B
Drew, RF
Cameron, CF
Hall, 2B
Molina, C
Victor Martinez will not be able to play right after the break. Jacoby Ellsbury will talk to the media today.

Rotation vs Rangers July 15-18: Tim Wakefield, Clay Buchholz, John Lackey, Jon Lester. Daisuke Matsuzaka would start the series in Oakland on July 19. ... Manny Delcarmen threw 35 pitches in the bullpen yesterday and is hoping to be activated after the ASB. ... Jed Lowrie's rehab tour moves up to Pawtucket (AAA) next week.

And:
Spiders/Rays, 7 PM
Yankees/Mariners, 10 PM
The Yankees have an extra day off after the ASB before hosting Tampa Bay for three games. The two teams will also play in Florida July 30 and 31, and August 1. The Red Sox are in New York for four games August 6-9.
Example
July 10:

1911 - Phillies outfielder Sherry Magee knocks out umpire Bill Finneran with one punch after being ejected for disputing a called third strike. He is suspended for the season, but upon appeal he will be reinstated after five weeks (36 games).

1935 - Ed Cole of the Galveston Buccaneers pitches the first perfect game in Texas League history. His team beats the Tulsa Oilers 1-0 on an inside-the-park home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

He meaning Lackey.

laura k said...

OBie making a big fuss over the injured guys being with the team - Tek, PD. Hmm.

allan said...

Ellsbury speaks

allan said...

not a lot of actual quotes in that update, i assume ellsbury said more than that. clearly, he ans boras are not happy with the way the red sox medical team handled the initial rib situation.

allan said...

wow - big win for the orioles. last night. game-tying grand slam with two outs in bottom of ninth, then a dong in the 10th to win.

allan said...

nava to lackey: "okay, asshole, i tied it. now pls try not to re-fuck things up again."

laura k said...

heh - castif and ob calling dave magadan "mags".

I know!!! I always get a laugh out of that. :)

allan said...

magadan

could it be?

allan said...

ProJo has better quotes.

Ellsbury said that in April he specifically asked for -- but did not receive -- MRI exams on both the front of his rib cage and the back of his rib cage. Had he received the requested MRI on the back of his rib cage, he said, the broken rib that has caused him the most trouble would have been diagnosed.

"That's where the pain was -- front and back," he said, referring frequently to the notes on his lap. "That's important to remember that. Front and back. That's what I asked for."

Ellsbury said that the misdiagnosis of the injury cost him rehab time because it eventually caused the broken rib and the muscles around it to suffer. Had he and the medical staff dealt with the pain in his back from the beginning, he said, the pain wouldn't have recurred when he resumed playing. ...

***

And: "While I was out at API every single day, they [Red Sox] would get a report of exactly what I did -- the weight, the time, every detail was submitted to them every single day."

***

RedSoxDiehard said...

But he's so cute. He must be mis-remembering what transpired. Softies do that.

allan said...

mis-remembering

Hmmm, but that would mean that Fat Billy is also cute and soft.

lackey: 28-21 = 49

On my way to the Sea Dogs game today, which hopefully they'll actually play in between thunderstorms. My parents got these tickets in December - how do they always seem to know which random summer Saturday it's going to rain? Kyle Weiland pitching today. (Casey Kelly tomorrow, d'oh.)

RedSoxDiehard said...

Hmmm, but that would mean that Fat Billy is also cute and soft.

Good point. Obviously that wasn't the best word choice!

laura k said...

"While I was out at API every single day, they [Red Sox] would get a report of exactly what I did -- the weight, the time, every detail was submitted to them every single day."

I assumed this was the case. That's one reason some of this crap made absolutely no sense to me.

allan said...

did castig just call cameron "heroic" for playing with ab pain? castig did say you could "see it (pain) in his face when he runs" and said approvingly that cameron has been playing "without complaining".

i am sensing a theme.

allan said...

i wish we had transcripts of games so i could collect stuff like this.

Patrick said...

Time to make them pay, Scutaro.

allan said...

they are going to boo you anyway, marco, might as well give them a real reason.

Patrick said...

Pet peeve: When the radio guys whine about the pace of the game.

STFU.

allan said...

i was lookin at old linescores last night and found this one from may 7, 1901, the AL's first season:

BAL - 111 014 132 - 14
PHI - 410 112 010 - 10

(scoring in 14 of the 18 half-innings)

allan said...

they are set to erect a statue to cameron's bravery. jesus hussein christ.

Patrick said...

i was lookin at old linescores last night

That doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

allan said...

National Association linescores from 1871-73 or so are hilarious.

R-H-E totals like:

0-4-13

19-16-19

3-5-23

are not rare!

But then there are games with 0 total errors. I would assume if Retrosheet had no error data it would just list R-H and not put a 0. Very different official scoring?

RedSoxDiehard said...

OK, on my way to Portland. At the rate this game is going (not that I'm complaining about the pace, cuz our ability to work the count is what makes our lineup work, just sayin') I'll be able to hear it in the car for the whole 2.5-hour drive.

allan said...

"alomar's range was so amazing that sometimes you did not need a shortstop or a first baseman."

i assume o'brien is exaggerating. but the way he was talking, i am not so sure.

and to say that alomar was a better 2B than joe morgan (or rogers hornsby or nap lajoie) is a fucking crime.

allan said...

have fun!

laura k said...

Castig said he thinks Almoar is the greatest 2B of all time.

laura k said...

Patrick, I second your pet peeve.

And finally, the answer to the age-old question, what does H stand for in JC's middle name! Thanks, A!

allan said...

he was very good (until he fell off a cliff at age 33), but that is nonsense.

allan said...

looking at alomar's career fielding stats, he clearly had a negative value for his career -- and it didn't come solely from his decline years. also, range factors often below the league average, even in his prime. i'd like to read something in-depth about his fielding.

laura k said...

"Why can't we get playes like that?"

laura k said...

(Re Alex Gonzalez dong)

allan said...

OB: "something has been off all day about john lackey"

and by "all day", i assume you mean "all season"

laura k said...

Obie said a kid "took a sherpa with him" to get to the foul ball in the 5th level. Cute.

allan said...

OB: "kid took a sherpa to get" bautista's deep foul ball

that is funny.

What benefit comes from the Red Sox misdignosing the rib? He is arbitration eligible next year, his agent should want him on the field at all times. The Red Sox will not benefit from haveing an injured Ellsbury on the field, I don't understand the disconnect with him and the Medical Dept. This isn't an insurance or cost issue , so why not just give him the friggin MRI's...

This also doesn't help his trade value, at all. Something must be there. Something more we don't know.

9casey said...

Something tells me John Lackey has a DL stint in his very near future.

laura k said...

So long, Lackey. We hate you.

Kathryn said...

I really don't think he could be much worse.

laura k said...

What benefit comes from the Red Sox misdignosing the rib?

It doesn't have to be intentional. Red Sox team doctors have effed up before.

Plus there is an inherent conflict of interest with a doctor employed by the team.

allan said...

sox docs have had several fuckups in the last few years, not seeing things.

laura k said...

pfft

Kathryn said...

I think that was a leftover ejection from all of the Toronto stuff earlier.

allan said...

tito "firing up the team" (tm).

Kathryn said...

I don't know that I've ever seen Francona this upset.

allan said...

Now OB saying that 6 called strikeouts on Sox is "awfully high". This from the guy who was dumbfounded and bowled over that drew took 5 pitches in a row.

Plus it was actually 7 called on Bos -- and 0 called for Tor.

allan said...

oooh, i'll have to catch video of it.

allan said...

maybe brawl time?

laura k said...

Castig said Cito said Scutaro has funny nicknames for everybody. He ought to be on our thread!

allan said...

Cito or Tito?

allan said...

4 HBP -- and 3 in 2+ innings?

where is the fight?

Kathryn said...

Another HBP.

laura k said...

I thought he said Cito. Was Cito managing the Jays when Scutaro was on the team?

allan said...

yeah, last year.

laura k said...

Then yes, Cito.

Time for the soon-to-be-famous Miracle in Toronto.

laura k said...

Or not.

Sparkling clean water.

Kathryn said...

Ugh. See you tomorrow. Have a good night.

It took him only 14 pitches to load the bases and serve up a grand slam to Jose Lopez!
