Russell Martin, waiting until after the Yankees had clinched the East before opening his cake hole:
Anything to get the Red Sox out would be awesome for me. ... I hate the Red Sox. ... I would love to see them lose. ... When you wear the pinstripes, you just kind of learn to be that way, I guess. ... It would be fun to be the spoiler and get 100 wins.
Example

Pedroia, 2B
Gonzalez, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Aviles, 3B
Crawford, LF
Scutaro, SS

Sunday: John Lackey / Ivan Nova

Martin not do math so good. 100 wins means the MFY beat TB at least twice, which of course very much helps get the Sox in.

Sunday...please, Tito, start Aceves instead of Lackey.

""Dan Shaughnessy writes that the Sox shouldn't be allowed in the postseason for the good of the game.""

Haha! I heard CHB on Steve Somers on the FAN last night, saying how the Red Sox aren't one of the top 4 teams in the AL. I guess he doesn't realize that MLB considers teams' records for the entire season when deciding who makes the playoffs.

And about the "shouldn't" attitude: this came up with the 2006 Cardinals. So many people seemed to feel like they "shouldn't" have won, that they weren't the best team. But they were the ONE team who won 11 post-season games. Every team knew going in that's what they'd have to do to be considered World Champion. (Not to say that you shouldn't complain about the system itself.)

And CHB isn't the first to say this about the '11 Sox. I heard some radio caller say the same thing. Said some bullshit about how he's a Sox fan, but more importantly, he's a baseball fan, and for the game, the Red Sox "shouldn't" make the playoffs. In an odd twist, the hosts actually were smart, and by the end of the call had the guy admitting that he was full of shit, that he DOES care about the Sox first and foremost, and was really just "trying to do a reverse jinx."

So CHB is doing Murray Chass's job now, too.

And about Russell Martin: first of all, good job by him coming right out and saying he hates a rival.

However, did he come out after the third straight win over the Rays and say "I'm really disappointed in myself, and my teammates, and my lord and savior Jesus Christ, we didn't give it 110 percent AT ALL when it came to our goal: ANYTHING to get the Red Sox out"? No. And like hebdomad said, is 100 wins or knocking the Red Sox out more important? He's got a decision to make.

Not really, unless the decision is to keep his mouth shut or not. Hitting .236, he doesn't contribute enough to matter one way or the other.

Exactly what many Sox (and other non-NYY) fans said about the 2000 Yankees, and exactly my reply.

Yeah, and The Master of the Binder (Senor Girardi) said, "Boys will be boys."

Way to recognize the best sports rivalry in baseball, Joe. Bravo.

We were gamethreading the game, as the Sox were PPD'd.
