What If?

What if the Red Sox:
Split this weekend with Rays: 1-1
Split four games with Orioles: 2-2
Lose Yankees series: 1-2
Lose Orioles series: 1-2
While the Rays:
Split this weekend with Red Sox: 1-1
Win Yankees series: 3-1
Win Blue Jays series: 2-1
Win Yankees series: 2-1
The Red Sox -- 5-7 over the season's final 12 games -- would finish at 92-70.

The Rays -- 8-4 over the season's final 12 games -- would finish at 91-71.

And the Red Sox would still win the wild card.

If the Sox just win three then the Rays have to win 7 and winning seven of their remaining games is no cakewalk.

And should the Sox win today the Rays would have to play five games better over an eleven game span.

What if we just go on a 10-2 tear, sweep the MFY and claim the East title? Sounds a lot less stressful :-)

I just finished "The Given Day" by Dennis Lehane. It was super awesome, to be articulate.

Props to you, Allan, for helping inspire Lehane on his amazing book!

I was sent a copy of that when it was published, but I have not read more than the opening (which is fucking great). ... I found out about the novel when a fact-checker from his publisher called me to verify some stuff about the train ride from Chicago to Boston. I was surprised publishers did that, especially for novels. I'm most thrilled to be listed right before Howard Zinn in his acknowledgements!

The whole book is amazing, but the opening is really the best single chapter in the book.
