G140: Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 4

Troy Glaus's solo home run down the left field line off MDC in the top of the eighth erased a 4-3 Boston lead and Vernon Wells's two-run home run to center off Jeemer in the top of the ninth broke the tie.

Jason Varitek was on base four times tonight: walking in the second and fifth, hitting a two-run dong in the sixth and singling in the eighth. Crisp singled and doubled, Ortiz singled twice and walked, and Ellsbury doubled and scored a run.

***

Shaun Marcum (3.75, 124 ERA+) / Curt Schilling (4.02, 113 ERA+)

Schilling has made five starts since coming off the disabled list on August 6: 31 IP, 31 H, 2 BB, 15 K, 3.48 ERA.

Marcum has pitched at least six innings in 17 of his 21 starts this year, teaming up with AJ Burnett as Toronto's top two starters. However, Marcum's ERA in his last three outings (14 IP) is 7.71 and opponents are .393/.433/.656. (His record in those three starts is 2-1, so Joe Morgan would insist he's doing quite well.)

Seattle plays in New York at 7 PM: Washburn/Hughes.

LBJ second, huh? Interesting.

Pretty smart move, actually.

Allen said...

Not that it matters, but I might've gone LBJ, Youks and then put Lugo in the 6-hole.

tim said...

Not smart to have slügo up there though. Throw him in the 9 spot, have LBJ lead off with Yook second then bump everyone else up one, IMO.

I'm going to try and not watch this game, since I have to study for a make up exam at 9am tomorrow, but knowing me, I'll be watchin.

Zenslinger said...

"LBJ" to th' glossary when you have the time.

nick said...

I don't mind LBJ second, as he can probably advance the lead-off solidly (if he gets on), but did my lazy mind recall that lugo's done better when he's in the bottom of the order?

While I'll miss him in the game I'm all for giving "Fuck Yeah!" a day off.

hopefully I'll be by a TV later..have more meetings tonight (last night I got home at 11:30pm).

have fun.

LBJ and JtC have been added to Glossary.

I just watched a very dramatic and exciting ending to what appeared to be an easy Phillies win over the Braves.

The score was 8-2 going to the bottom of the 8th in Atlanta. Tom Gordon came in to pitch, and Chipper Jones greeted him with a lead-off double. Mark Teixiera went F9, and then the bloops began.

I don't think I've ever seen so many bloop hits before. Brian McCann blooped to right center, then Jeff Francouer blooped just over Chase Utley's head into right field to score Jones. 8-3. Scott Thorman pinch-hit, and blooped a single to shallow left to load the bases.

So Gordon couldn't get the job done. Charlie Manuel called upon his closer, Brett Myers, for a five-out save. Bases loaded for Yunel Escobar. Myers threw a pitch that kicked off of the catcher and a run scored. 8-4. Escobar then walked to load the bases once again. Up came Matt Diaz, and he blooped one on the infield that didn't even make it to the infield dirt. Francouer scored. 8-5.

Willie Harris, who hit his second home run of the season earlier, came up and walked with the bases loaded. Thorman scored. 8-6.

That's all the Braves would get in the bottom of the eighth, as Kelly Johnson fouled out to third and Chipper Jones flew out to left.

8-6 into the bottom of the 9th, and it looked like Brett Myers was on cruise control. He struck out Mark Teixiera, then got Brayan Pena to ground out to first.

2 out in the bottom of the 9th. It looked like the Braves were cooked. But Jeff Francouer came up and hit a little ducksnort toward shortstop in the infield and reached, then took second on indifference. Martin Prado took over for Chipper Jones in the top of the 9th as part of a double switch. He hit a Baltimore chop right off of home plate that bounced to the right of the pitcher, and Myers' throw was high.

Men at the corners with two out for Yunel Escobar, the winning run. He walked on four pitches to load the bases for... Matt Diaz.

Diaz took a first strike, then on the next pitch hit one to right field. The back-story here is that the Phillies outfielders were in closer because of all of those bloop hits in the 8th. Chris Roberson rushed back, back, back, and almost to the track reached up. The ball hit the edge of his mitt and fell, rolling to the wall.

Francouer scored, as did Prado. Escobar rounded third as the throw came in just a little wide of home plate, and Escobar scored...

Braves win. Such an amazing comeback. 8-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning, and the Braves score 4. 2 out in the bottom of the 9th with the bases empty, the Braves load the bases and then score three to win it.

Wow.

Rob said...

LBJ and JtC have been added to Glossary.

That's good because I had no idea who JtC was.

Zenslinger said...

Ish, thanks for the nice narrative. Yahoo's Gameday crapped the bed after Franceour's single in the ninth, so I didn't find out until later.

I, perhaps strangely, like the Braves and would love to see them back in it. But despite what a great win this was, their chances are closer to none than to slim.

Jere said...

ish, that is crazy. Glad to see man- and woman-beater Brett Myers blow it in that fashion. That's so weird, because within the last few hours, I wrote a blog entry about a commercial I heard which mentions a "walk-off triple." My contention was that this hardly ever happens, and is in fact nearly impossible. As I'm reading the end of your description, I'm thinking, Oh my lord, sounds like this actually could be a walk-of triple! I checked Gameday, though, and he was credited with a double. Proving my theory! (Did you happen to see how close the hitter got to third?)

I;m off to the game right now, so if you answer this, I can't respond til later....

From the Herald's clubhouse insider blog:

The Baseball Hall of Fame will be including the scorecard of Providence Journal reporter Joe McDonald in the display on Clay Buchholz’ no hitter that it is putting together.

I wonder how much he is charging for his scorecard?

Lots of the local beat writers on WEEI today. Look for stories calling for Ellsbury to replace Drew to start appearing in 5 or 6 days (just before Being returns).

They just continue to hammer on Drew, but now the new drum beat is that he needs to get his head on straight. Evidence of his head being bad is his refusal to use the "wall" while at Fenway.

laura k said...

Last night I posted an all-caps THAT'S MY BOY when LBJ hit the triple... only I accidentally posted it to my own blog. Oops.

allan said...

The Baseball Hall of Fame will be including the scorecard of Providence Journal reporter Joe McDonald in the display on Clay Buchholz’ no hitter that it is putting together.

I hear the HoF asked the CHB for his, but ultimately said no after they discovered that Dan had scribbled "ah hell", "fuckin' rook" and "great, now i have to write something positive about the sox" on it.

allan said...

L is out tonight -- may be back for the late innings -- so I'll be modding.

Play Ball!

s1c said...

So was checking out Bill Burt's Talks Sports (Bradfords old blog) when I came accross this comment by Mr. Joshua - We need to replace Schilling next year. I don’t know where all these players come from next year. We have so many holes up and down this lineup. This is not a playoff team. We might get by the Indians but never the Angels nor the Yankees for that matter.

I’ d rather 3 and out and get rid of Theo and Lucky Larry. Change the ownership group.

Is it just me or is this guy a MFY troll!

allan said...

He's a idiot.

This is not a playoff team.

He says this about the team that has had the best record in baseball pretty much the entire year.

How is this guy bright enough to remember to keep breathing every day?

charlie pioli said...

So what do we do with Clement when he comes back,? Put him in the pen?

allan said...

Clement?

If he can, let him pitch one inning in the final game of the year.

s1c said...

I agree with RS about Clement.

I would not be surprised to see the Sox offer him a 1 yr. contract in the off season. Something along the line of 1 yr 3 or 4 mil.

charlie pioli said...

I bet he's washed up by now, and we wouldn't need him in the rotation next year, cause we'll have Beckett, Dice-k, Wake, Lester or Bucholz, and possibly Shill .

allan said...

i'd be surprised if they did anything more than wave bye bye to clement.

but maybe they see from his rehab he could pitch next year. beats me.

bennymac said...

when did we get clement? just kidding. i was really pulling for the guy. he looked dominant his first 1/2 year with the sox, but fell apart after that. he could help down the stretch in spot starts to get starters some rest or in long relief before the playoffs. 1st inning dong?

allan said...

google fucking up

allan said...

loaded for drew....

Zenslinger said...

Hey! GDGD said "run(s)" on Lowell's single! I feel cheated.

Blog went boom for a minute there. At least for me.

allan said...

i guess the operator thought lbj would score.

charlie pioli said...

Going for the sweep today! Not that it matters, since the chokers are finish in the division.

bennymac said...

lbj could have scored...at least drew didn't pop out

allan said...

buffy still saying "else berry"

Zenslinger said...

RBI Drew! Well done!

Uh...right, guys?

s1c said...

Fragging Hill, that ball was scorched!

0-0 top of 2nd in dah bronx.

charlie pioli said...

Google fucked up on my computer. Anyone else?

That pitch to Drew was right down the pipe.

allan said...

zen, if i understand the weei mouthbreathers correctly, any runs drew drives in do not actually count.

bennymac said...

got into an argument yesterday with a yankee fan who told me that the yankees do not care about winning the division and that they would gladly trade one of their division titles from the last 7 years for a world series title, so winning the division means nothing. he mentioned the sweep last week and how it will happen again...i reminded him of a three game losing streak that ended in the worst choke in sports history...things got quiet. it's not worth the time to talk to these boneheaded people.

bennymac said...

settle down schill.

allan said...

mfy fans have been yakking about the division for years -- now all of a sudden the division is not important. i wonder why.

were you talking to murray chass? he wrote that 2004 really didn't count because the sox did not win the division.

Zenslinger said...

Yeah, I don't know how to feel. I want Drew to get credit for at least hanging in there as a so-so player this year. But at the same time, I would have liked a base hit.

At least it wasn't a DP. A run's a run.

I wonder about that "mouthbreather" thing, though. Do dumb people breathe through their mouths?

No offense to you, RS, but there are some expressions that start to seem overused to me rather quickly. "I threw up in mouth a little" is another one.

bennymac said...

what a play by cora!

allan said...

fuck yeah!!!! einstein!!!!

Rob said...

EINSTEIN!

Uncle Joe: "Alex Cora will always find a way to make his presence felt in a game."

allan said...

alright call them "shit for brains" - that one never goes out of style!

bill simmons STILL uses the "threw up in my mouth" line. it's sad how much of a self-parody he's become.

s1c said...

zen, if i understand the weei mouthbreathers correctly, any runs drew drives in do not actually count.

You are correct sir!

What a play by Cora!!!

allan said...

Uncle Joe: "Alex Cora will always find a way to make his presence felt in a game."

that is not necessarily always a good thing.

allan said...

and the jays strand a pair.

Rob said...

If he can, let him pitch one inning in the final game of the year.

Or perhaps let him pitch a game after the Sox clinch the division.

But do you guys really think Clement will be able to pitch in a MLB game before the end of the season?

Zenslinger said...

Big K from the Big Fella. He's hitting 92/3 according to GD. Still got it?

allan said...

i do not expect to see him.

Rob said...

that is not necessarily always a good thing.

This is true, but I think more often than not it is a good thing. Unless he happens to be swinging at a slider at his feet.

Rob said...

Small ball! Angel pride.

s1c said...

I would be surprised if he didn't make one appearance. From all indications he has worked very hard in the Rehab and is on track. Plus he just wants to pitch one inning, and that should be easily done.

allan said...

coco has been a bag of suck lately, but i hate bunts so early.

ah fuck -- a DP

s1c said...

Two bullets tonight and both became outs. Cora smoked that ball.

allan said...

cora having another effect.

bennymac said...

going to fenway south (baltimore) tomorrow night. was hoping to see buchholz if he was staying in the rotation, but i love seeing wake. maybe he'll throw a no-no.

bennymac said...

barehand, and a beauty!

Rob said...

Plus he just wants to pitch one inning, and that should be easily done.

Reminds me a little bit of a game earlier in the season in Chicago. The Cubs were getting blown out and they brought in Kerry Wood for one inning. Wrigley field suddenly burst to life. It was a little bit of a shaky inning, but he got two strikes on a batter with 2 out, and the place was rockin'. Then he struck him out, and you would have thought the Cubbies had just clinched a spot in the playoffs.

CAT-LIKE REFLEXES.

allan said...

STABBED BY CURT!

bare hand off to the side.

Rob said...

Only difference with Clement is the likelihood that he won't get that kind of an ovation. He'll get an ovation, but not on the level that Kerry Wood got.

allan said...

i still hate dusty baker for ruining wood's shoulder in his rookie season. ... i'll bet kerry spent many nights wondering what could have been ...

Zenslinger said...

3 solid from Curt + and Ibanez 2R DONG. So far, so good.

Rob said...

RS, that's why I wouldn't mind not seeing too much of Clay Buchholz for the rest of this season.

And I certainly applaud the way the Red Sox are using Bot this season. The program he goes through, etc.

I was surprised he pitched last night's 9th inning. The first time he worked three games in a row this season.

s1c said...

Ok, lets get the offense going here.

2-0 in dah Bronx, M's.

Rob said...

Look at how close LBJ gets to first on a grounder to second!

Scouts have said they've clocked Ellsbury at 4.0 seconds from home to first.

Rob said...

In this series.

allan said...

I was surprised he pitched last night's 9th inning. The first time he worked three games in a row this season.

Tito may want to bury the MFY right now while we are playing chumps like the Blue Jays (who just swept the Mariners -- the same Mariners who may now be sweeping the Yanks!!!).

Plus Ibanez's dong was hit off The Second Coming!!!

allan said...

my tv just went black.

fuckin' rogers!

bennymac said...

the yankees have lost the last four games that the "second coming" has pitched

bennymac said...

shift this! oh...damn it papi, you're not rickey henderson.

Rob said...

Ortiz hit a single to left then was cut down trying to stretch it to a double. It was sort of in the corner, but Ortiz almost made it. Actually, I thought he got in there. But the umpire didn't.

allan said...

since clay's no-hitter, posters at the nyyfans messageboard have been referring to hughes's 6 no-hit innings against texas (when he had to leave the game with an injury) as a no-hitter.

TV is back.

s1c said...

Papi just got thrown out at second by Stairs.

MFY's won last night so no sweep by the M's. Now 2-1 with the M's getting a lead off double in the 4th.

Rob said...

Ortiz was out. Saw the replay.

Rob said...

since clay's no-hitter, posters at the nyyfans messageboard have been referring to hughes's 6 no-hit innings against texas (when he had to leave the game with an injury) as a no-hitter.

If that's a no-hitter, so's Devern Hansack's 5 no-hit innings during the final game of the season last year before the game got rained on.

bennymac said...

most yankee fans do not know who phillip hughes is.

allan said...

MFY's won last night so no sweep by the M's.

Oh yeah! I should know that -- being obsessed with them and all.

Rob said...

2-1 SEA. Man at third for Seattle in the top of the 4th, 1 out.

Lopez batting.

allan said...

buffy just used the phrase "clogging up the bases" re ortiz.

good fucking god.

allan said...

hansack is not a true yankee (tm), so i am afraid you are mistaken.

allan said...

the posters at nyyfans are truly retarded morons. sosh has a members-only thread entitled "continuing to make fun of nyyfans" which keeps tabs on their wisdom.

allan said...

lowell is the new einstein!

bennymac said...

very nice by lowell...he IS the man!

s1c said...

Nice play by Mikey!!!

top of the 4th gets nothing for the m's. still 2-1

allan said...

in two sentences, rance just said that rios should have gone straight home at full speed AND gone right back to third base.

i need some remdawg!!!

bennymac said...

he said something to that effect. that if he was running on contact he would have continued for home.

allan said...

so when the sox come to toronto, the jays are having an irish night, where all fans in some to-be-set-up "irish section" get a green hat.

"irish section"? wtf?

maybe they can try a "coloured section" next season.

bennymac said...

is it sad that the game's only run was driven in by jd drew?

allan said...

It's more sad that Drew has the only RBI tonight and the "smartest fans in baseball" are booing him (before doing the wave).

allan said...

i know drew does not have much credit in fans' banks, but coming into this game, his OBP for the entire season was .357. varitek's was .358.

since the ASG, drew has hit .254. yook is hitting .231 and tek is at .220.

in fact, tek's slugging since the ASG is LOWER than his OBP.

s1c said...

...the "smartest fans in baseball" are booing him (before doing the wave).

Maybe they were saying dreeeew.

2-1 in da bronx top of 6th (because I know you are obsessed with them) ;)

Rob said...

Great camera work, NESN. They barely showed that last catch. It was at the very left of the screen. They were more concerned about the guy running to first.

allan said...

way to block the plate, capt.

fuck.

Rob said...

Looked like he got his foot in. But it looks like he got tagged on the hand. Hmm.

s1c said...

That throw right there should end any speculation about LBJ playing right, not with that arm.

Zenslinger said...

Stop the bleeding, Curt!

No, not in your goddam foot!

allan said...

lyndon does have the speed and range to play right, which might be more important than the arm -- which seems average.

allan said...

jays hitters must be praying better than curt this inning.

allan said...

i need a drink.

Rob said...

LBJ awesome catch!

Now we need to order up some offense with a side of more offense.

Rob said...

NESN's still showing the replay of the play at the plate. It still looks like 'Tek got him, but the run is still on the board.

allan said...

ococ tnub.

Rob said...

Yeah, oCoC! Beautiful bunt! Angel pride!

allan said...

STOP fucking bunting!!!!

christ..

allan said...

meaning einstein -- no bunts.

Rob said...

Yeah, I don't support a Cora bunt right now.

allan said...

FUCK -- BASAHE!!!!!!

Rob said...

Strange gamble to let him bunt with 2 strikes.

allan said...

god damn it -- great play, tito.
for fuck's sake.

allan said...

loaded for lyndon.

Rob said...

Well here comes LBJ with ducks on the pond. This should be interesting, at worst. Awesome at best.

Rob said...

I like how Ellsbury just poked that high fastball away, especially having an inside and high pitch called a strike.

Rob said...

JtC is pitching in a 2-1 SEA ballgame in the 7th inning in New York.

s1c said...

So, probably no Bot tonight. That would mean Oki Doki would close, you'd think.

Apparently that means Bryan Corey is going to try and hold this one-run lead in the top of the 7th.

fuck, bases loaded and nothing. well i hope that doesnt comeback to bite us in the ass.

yanks will be three games up after they finish it up in the bronx.
question: does that pretty much seal the deal for the yanks? do you really see seattle getting hot in this last month to comeback? (remember its a question, not an opnion before you jump up my ass)

allan said...

if they can talk about the sox's 6 game lead being dicey, then ny's 3 game lead is really thin.

Ooh sheeit, Ankiel jack!

another HR for ankiel - #7

FRACK. Thanks mdc.

Seattle looks like they're cooked, to me. I think Detroit has one more run at the wildcard in them, but it will be close. Seattle just seems to be going the wrong way. Then again, so does Detroit. But Detroit looks like too good a team to be out of it.

Hard hit balls. Blah. The squander does hurt.

nixon33 said...

when (besides '04) have the yankees been known to blow it in the clutch? don't they have more championships than anyone in the history of sports? (makes me cringe)
didnt they build up a pretty in reputation in the 90's?

... chronic underachievers.

WTF college Volleyball?

nixon33 said...

i dont know if losing in the 7th game in the WS in both VERY CLOSE games counts as blowing it/choking. its not like they had a 3-0 lead in the series like in '04. so even if you the 2000's i still dont think thats what they are known for...thats just me. they're definitely not the yanks of old, and we're not the yesterdays sox either, and i'm happier for it.

Wow, we're looking a little limp tonight.
Just got in and I'm not real inspired here

BTW L-girl.
Last night I posted an all-caps THAT'S MY BOY when LBJ hit the triple... only I accidentally posted it to my own blog. Oops.

I saw that this morning on your blog and just laughed out loud.
I knew exactly when it was put there!

Sosock, that's hilarious. *I* didn't even know it was there until Allan told me this afternoon!

Note to self, keep one blog open at a time...

to really make it puckering i call jays score 3 in this half inning or does that exclude a walkoff? however many runs they can score while still allowing for a large lefty longball lifting the sox to victory.

Oh shut up Buffy.
