G160: Red Sox 5, Twins 2

RED SOX WIN AL EAST!

Dice was superb (8-6-2-2-8, 119). The Twins' two runs came in the seventh inning. Bot needed only six pitches to slam the door.

Tizzle remained white hot, with a double (#53), single and home run (#35). Lowell singled, doubled and drove in three. Drew (double) and Yook (single) drove in one run apiece.

In Baltimore, the Orioles got three runs off Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth (Jay Payton's three-run triple tying the game) and one in the bottom of the tenth off Edwar Ramirez (Melvin Mora's bases-loaded squeeze bunt) and win 10-9.
Yankees - 004 031 010 0 - 9 14 0
Orioles - 011 040 003 1 - 10 20 0
***

Kevin Slowey (4.57, 97 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.48, 102 ERA+)

Let's try that again: Red Sox W + MFY L = East.

Elsewhere:
Yankees at Orioles, 7 PM
Cleveland at Royals, 8 PM
Angels at Athletics, 10 PM

Do these exist? I want one.

That shoulda been a win last nite, runner on third less than two out. Can't believe that's the first time Twinkies have been to Fenway this year. Thanks interleague.

Thanks interleague.

Exactly! Sign the petition.

This is the night. The night where Dice-K comes around and baffles the Twins with his ridiculous array of pitches. Them shits'll be DANCIN at the Fens...

This is the night where Mussina returns to his home, in Baltimore, and returns to form, the form we witnessed from August 16-27. Once the Orioles spread Avian Flu all over the Yankees this weekend, they'll be reelin' goin' into October (of course, after conceding the division tonight).

This is the night where the Sox offense is going to fire on all cylinders, 1 through 9. Everyone will have at least one RBI and Manny and Yook will put on a display of ginormous dongs. (Wow, I definitely just said that)

This is the night people, so get your drink in one hand and keep one hand empty for the pennant which will bestow it later this evening!

Off to write this sumbitch, later all!

Oh my!! (/georgetakei)

Would be funny if the game gets rained out lol.

Rob said...

I don't think you have to worry about that happening. The weather was supposed to be rainy today (even if it was, it was going to clear out tonight), but also about 9:00 this morning the skies cleared and the sun came out. It's actually been a pretty nice day.

nick said...

who here is thinking "clinch"? anyone.

alright. enough w/ the stupid questions. You do like baseball, right?

I'm looking forward to a game that will be more fun than frustrating.

as Marcel said, "Fall is tremendous!"

nixon33 said...

im back everybody, i had some company, but now i can return to being a psychotic sox fan and vetning/celebrating here.

i have an asshole question:
how/when do postseason tickets go on sale/when are they announced to go on sale?

i want dice-k to have a good start. he looked good last time besides the 2 crucial walks he gave up before lopez went donger off (i forget who)

laura k said...

Yeah Tim!!!

(And of course keep at least a finger free for typing, so you can share the joy with your Joy Nation sisters and brothers.)

laura k said...

And PS my laptop is working beautifully today so expect a lot of blather from my end.

Thanks for the IT help yesterday. I'm pretty good with that stuff (a desktop, two laptops and a handheld between us) but this was totally baffling.

allan said...

I linked to the Bot story/cover in SI above this post.

allan said...

There might be ticket info at redsox.com or in an old Extra Bases post at the Globe.

allan said...

I also want to note Jere's post in which he posts the images for MLB shirts showing the Yankees as 2007 AL East Champions -- and a shirt with them as AL West Champions!

"Win the East AND West divisions? They can do anything!!!!"

allan said...

Buchholz's season is over. Shut down.

allan said...

Playoff ticket info here.

Rob said...

mmmm blather.

nixon33 said...

thanks for the links, RS. that info seems kind of odd...you have to register to even have a CHANCE at tickets? i thought they used to release them on a certain date adn EVERYONE had a fair chance via ticketmaster, no longer the case?

laura k said...

Welcome back Nix33. Good job ditching the company.

I wish 9Casey would come around more. He was the biggest fan of keeping the gamethread at JoS - then he got NESN full-time and left us.

laura k said...

mmmm blather

When Cakey blathers, who gets to lick the spoon?

laura k said...

I think registration makes the ticket process fairer. Theoretically it should weed out scalpers.

Rob said...

I think registration makes the ticket process fairer. Theoretically it should weed out scalpers.

Especially if the MA legislature lifts the regulations on scalping. I heard on the news they were debating doing just that. Scalping would be legal. It is in New York now. Other teams (ex. Diamondbacks) have a set time where anyone can buy postseason tickets. I know the Yankees have a lottery, as well. Not sure about LA or Cleveland.

Rob said...

Don't be surprised if Lyndon gets scratched, though:

"We have him in the lineup, we reserve the right to not have him in the lineup," Terry Francona said this afternoon. "I think the trainers feel that will happen. We’ll get him out on the field a little bit and see how he’s moving around."

Amy said...

I am just so envious of you all getting to enjoy the game together. I am about to get dressed to go the part 1 of the Bar Mitzvah--Friday services and dinner. I am really hoping to get back to the hotel for some part of the game. Is it sacreligious to hope for that? Who knows? All I know is that I am hoping that they clinch and that I will be able to see it when they do---tonight!

Have fun, everyone, and GO SOX!

laura k said...

Amy, if it makes you feel any better, Allan is at work and probably won't get to see the game at all.

laura k said...

I heard on the news they were debating doing just that. Scalping would be legal. It is in New York now.

Ish, I don't know where you got the idea that scalping is legal in New York, but it is not.

The scalpers pay off the police and it is sometimes openly tolerated, but it is definitely illegal.

nick said...

I registered for the ticket lottery and in principle I like it better than the alternative which is effectively hacked in favor of the scalpers.

I don't have much of a problem with reselling of tickets but I'm for a fairly low limit on price over face value.

Amy said...

Thanks, Laura, but no, I don't feel better knowing someone as loyal and deserving as Allan also is missing the game. I wish he could be there to see it.

As for scalping, I think Ish is somewhat correct in that I believe NY no longer places a limit on what you can charge to resell tickets, whereas Mass still does. I heard a speaker who is counsel to the Knicks and Rangers talking about it at a conference I attended in the spring. Apparently businesses like Stubhub etc have persuaded the legislatures of NY and elsewhere to legalize the business of ticket resales above face value. If I had time, I would look it up and give more details, but that's what I recall the woman saying, and she specifically mentioned that it was still illegal in MA.

laura k said...

I think Ish is somewhat correct in that I believe NY no longer places a limit on what you can charge to resell tickets, whereas Mass still does.

Right. But I believe it's still illegal to re-sell tickets on the street around the venue. No?

If not, it's a very recent change I wasn't aware of. Sorry Ish. :)

Amy, have fun tonight, enjoy getting updates on the sly with the other rabid fans!

nick said...

It unofficially officially sucks that Allan will likely miss the game. Almost makes me want them to extend the clinch to tomorrow--almost, but not quite.

Amy, luck will be with you. Myabe you'll get food poisoning or something. :-O ... nono.

laura k said...

Almost makes me want them to extend the clinch to tomorrow--almost, but not quite.

But tomorrow we'll both be at work, and I'll only have GDGD! At least tonight I'm home and Allan has MLB-TV at work (although he's likely too busy to watch).

Please please please: clinch tonight!

allan said...

It unofficially officially sucks that Allan will likely miss the game.

No, it OFFICIALLY OFFICIALLY sucks!

allan said...

I'll be taking breaks!

Amy said...

Thanks, Nick...I think?? Food poisoning v missing the game. Hmmm, let me think about that!

I'll do some more checking on the scalping thing. It may not apply to on street sales as opposed to ticket agencies. I am not sure.

Yes, clinch tonight---for everyone's sake. For Laura and Allan, for the players and fans, and for me, too, since tonight I will have a chance of seeing the end of the game and no chance of that tomorrow night.

Off to be a good cousin! Enjoy!

laura k said...

NESN here! So far so good.

laura k said...

It's hard for me to follow the NYY game while I mod, so if anyone wants to post updates, please do!

laura k said...

Is Mussina pitching for the Yankees tonight? Don & Jerry said the Fenway scoreboard says "35" by the Yankees, but they don't know what's up. I have the game on the other channel, but I can't find out w/out missing our game.

laura k said...

Dice-K K's the first batter! And we're off.

Easy to moderate so far... I'm the only one here :)

I'd hate to be a big Mets fan right now. I'm a Mets fan, but they're not my primary club, so their skidding is annoying, but man.

The hits keep on coming against the Mets.

Rob said...

Dice: Your slider looks fantastic tonight.

Rob said...

Where's Andy? The new ball attendant is cute.

I guess I'll just have to do her for him! :P

laura k said...

I usually enjoy it when the Mets do badly, but this year I wanted them to win their division - the flipside of wanting the Yankees not to make the postseason at all. Damn.

laura k said...

I guess I'll just have to do her for him!

LOL. I'll let her know.

laura k said...

Thank you LBJ! That gave me a scare.

laura k said...

Another nice inning from Daisuke.

Anything new in Baltimore?

Rob said...

I guess I'll just have to do her for him!

L, he's probably seen her and is on his way down there already.

Rob said...

Scoreless after 1.5 innings

"Hi, my name's Andy. I saw you on TV and I'm here to do you."

POW! A fist to the jaw.

"Nice to meet you, Andy," she says to his crumpled shape on the ground.

laura k said...

Damn, Cuddyer robbed LBJ of at least a two-bagger.

Devine said...

Nice catch, Cuddyer! Damn.

Zenslinger said...

O's up 1-0 on a 2-out triple by Payton & a single to follow up.

Rob said...

"Nice to meet you, Andy," she says to his crumpled shape on the ground.

Little wimper from the crumped heap of Andy: "Playing hard to get, huh?"

laura k said...

Yes! Thanks ZS. :)

allan said...

"Hi, my name's Andy. I saw you on TV and I posted on a blog that I'd do you if given the chance. So, ummm, can I do you?"

Rob said...

That's a good start, but it's gonna have to take far more than just one run for the O's.

Jon Leicester got the loss his last time out, but he pitched 8 innings, giving up only 3 runs on 7 hits to Texas. Had no run support. Lost 3-0

laura k said...

Little wimper from the crumped heap of Andy: "Playing hard to get, huh?"

Andy's friend says, Bitch must be a dyke. Who else could resist Andy's charm.

Rob said...

See? It explains Andy's absence PERFECTLY.

Zenslinger said...

Welcome, LG!

I neither like nor hate the Mets, but when a team plays this badly down the stretch, I just feel like they shouldn't be in the postseason. Give some other bunch a chance. Not logical, necessarily, but...

When's the last time there was any kind of tie-breaker game at the end of the season? I'd love to see some of the really crazy NL scenarios of tied records come about...but I'd be satisfied with a one-game playoff of any flavor. Exciting.

Devine said...

Likin' Matsuzaka so far...bit nervous for the second time through the lineup.

nixon33 said...

man dice-k looks gooooood tonight.

Rob said...

frick. 2-1 mfy

laura k said...

Another nice inning from Dice-K! I'm nervous but hopeful.

Re playoff game, I guess the wild card has done away with much of the need for that. I think there was one recently in the NL, but I'm blanking on the details. Astros...? Anyone?

David said...

Hello everyone. Just settling down to "watch" the game and I see things are off to a good start tonight. Pretty damn funny that Andy is getting his ass kicked by a ball girl.

Rob said...

The Rockies have won 11 straight games. They play Arizona tonight. Probably the biggest series in the league this weekend.

Rob said...

Mets FINALLY get a run, trail the Marlins 2-1, Top 3rd. Oliver Perez for the Mets.

laura k said...

Fuck Yeah! Safe!!

Rob said...

I'm forecasting at least one playoff game.

laura k said...

And Manny safe too, avoids the DP.

Zenslinger said...

Yanks up 4-1. Yeeeeech.

laura k said...

Time for me to chant my mantra:

As long as we win, they can't catch us.

As long as we win, they can't catch us.

Of course I want to clinch tonight, but as long as we cling to our lead, we will win the division.

1st and 3rd w/ 1 out for Lowell!

3-0 good guys!
