Broadcast News & Open Bars

The first two games of the season will be televised by both NESN and ESPN2. There are also several bars/restaurants in Boston (and Rhode Island) that will be opening before sunrise.

NESN's pre-game show will begin at 5 AM, with the first pitch set for 6:05. The pre-game will be rebroadcast at 1:30 PM, followed by the game at 2:30 PM. ESPN2 -- with Gary "Sock" Thorne (ugh) and Steve Phillips (double ugh) -- will rebroadcast the game beginning at 1 PM.

In Boston, Game On will open at 5:30 AM on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Dennis & Callahan will broadcast live on Opening Day. Game On is usually open for breakfast, so there should be food. The Cask will also open at 5:30 AM and on Opening Day, the first 100 fans will receive a free breakfast. State laws prohibit the sale of alcohol before 8 AM. (BeerWorks is not an option; a SoSHer was told they "always open at 11:30".)

In Rhode Island, ShamRocks, an Irish Pub in Wakefield, will open at 6 AM and offer prizes after each inning. They'll have breakfast for $5 and hot dogs for a buck. Charlie O's, in Narragansett, will also open at 6 AM, with a cash bar and $5 breakfast buffet.

Please add any information on other places to watch the games in comments.

The exhibition games scheduled for tonight (11 PM EST) and Sunday (6 AM EST) will be broadcast on WRKO 680 AM. They will also be shown on MLB.TV.

Friday PM lineup

1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B

4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Mike Lowell, 3B
6. J.D. Drew, RF

PA Guy mispronounces Ramirez and Jacoby - accent on the first syllable on both. RAM-mur-ez. JAY-co-bee.

LOUD ROCK MUSIC!!!!!

Lineups being announced -- but whatever feed MLBTV is using is showing closeups on Dice (and sometimes Jeemer) 100% of the time. No one else being shown. Sometimes the Sox lined up on the foul line.

Chez L-Sock will open at 5:30. Fresh brewed coffee, Irish tea and whatever is in the fridge will be available. Canadian Red Sox fans are welcome to join us, but please refrain from speaking until your host is sufficiently caffeinated.

Shit! I just now realize you're doing a thread. Okay, I'll just post to myself for awhile.

Castiglione proclaims baseball's the only sport in which the defense controls the ball. I've only been hearing that all my life...

Dale Arnold with Joe in Japan.

Jere said...

anti-scalping laws in Tokyo very strict, so people who went over there w/out tickets (???) are totally screwed, according to Arnold. But he says his "friend" told him there were lots of folks like that. "Oh, I'll just take a trip all the way to Japan and ASSUME I can get tickets." Terrible.

Youk rips one to left, LFer drops it. 1st and 3rd for Papi.

Japanese pitchers throw the Japanese, smaller balls, Sox throwing regular balls.

4-6-3 for Papi. Arnold messing up left and right. 5-4 us after 3.5.

Jere said...

"What are the alcohol laws about mornings in NH?"

Possible answers:

1. I take it you haven't been there long....

2. They have laws in NH??

3. It's required.

4. If "drink whenever" isn't covered by "live free or die," I don't know what is.

Papi said he was glad to hit a dong in front of Japanese fans. Yes, Japanese media provides you with in-game quotes from players.

Lew Ford out. Clay still in in bottom 4. Crazy music and chanting going on. Arnold mentions your earlier comment about RAM-irez.

Although Kramer also stressed the first syllable when talking about his friend named Ramirez...

Jere said...

Drew botches a ball. E-9. Sounds like Price is Right music in background.

From seinfeldscripts dot com: "He's a friend of a friend. You know Corky Ramarez up on 94th Street? One day he and I are playing Pinochle"

I'd say the name was supposed to be "Ramirez," and Richards, not great with Spanish pronunciation, said it all "dumb-American" style. RAM-uh-rez. Leading the transcribers to think it was Ramarez. By the way, I lived on E. 94th when I lived in NYC. I take it Kramer meant West 94th, though. Which is where New York governors go to, well, whatever. Back to the action: Strikeout, and a double steal on the play. Arnold extremely confused by this somehow.

Spiderman theme playing! Oh, maybe just something close. These fans won't stop singing...

Jere said...

Are they singing Auld Lang Syne now? This is the type of thing where you're like, Hey, this is great, it's like a party! And then after a half-inning's worth, you're going MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP

Red Sox 5, Hanshin Tigers 4, after four full.

Jere said...

A very awkward interview by Joe with the old Seibu Lions announcer through a translator...

Top 6, still 5-4. Tek walks, Jacoby singles to start inning. I'm goin' to bed after this one.

Jere said...

Youk singles in a run. 6-4.

Jere said...

Papi pops out, end top 6. 6-4. Good night Tokyo.

I remember driving from VT to Boston, as soon as you're over the VT/NH line, there are these giant discount liquor stores right off the highway. Or maybe they're even on the highway? They might as well have a sign that says CHEAP BOOZE - GET TANKED NOW.

allan said...

I could be wrong, but I recall they were at a rest stop. Which I believe qualifies as on the highway. No exit needed.

"Wanna drink and drive? We can help."

Amen.

That's how I remember it too! So I think that's probably right.

We were driving from VT to Boston to Baltimore. Bos-NYY, then NYY-Balt, Yankees' first games at Camden Yard. I got my baseball from Dion James.
