Buchholz Will Start Sunday

Paul Byrd -- wearing #36 now that Kevin Cash has switched to #30 -- will get the ball opposite Roy Halladay tomorrow night in the opener against Toronto.

Halladay threw 130 pitches in his last outing and will be pitching on an extra day of rest. After Josh Beckett goes on Saturday, Clay Buchholz will start on Sunday.

mgl at The Book does not like the Byrd pick-up: "Why would Boston replace one pitcher in the rotation [Buchholz] with another who is probably a run worse? Because they have a case of the stupids!" ... Over at SoSH, there is a debate about how much bad luck has figured into Laptop's season. Over The Monster also looks at some HH data.

Mike Lowell (strained right oblique) does not know how long he'll be out of the lineup. "As long as I can walk in a straight line, it's fine. It's the little twists and turns, things you take for granted, that kind of bite at you. ... I've never had this, so I don't know how it's going to affect me ..."

After hanging out in the bullpen last night, David Pauley was optioned back to Pawtucket and 1B/OF Jeff "Gumball" Bailey was called up.

Boston claimed RHP Marcus McBeth off waivers from the Reds and sent him to Pawtucket. McBeth had a 6.20 ERA in 24 relief appearances for Louisville (AAA) this season. He pitched in 23 games for the Reds last year (5.95 ERA in 19.2 innings). The Sox also designated RHP Lincoln Holdzkom for assignment.

Jere has pix from the 19-17 win. ... SG on Byrd, HGH and porn. ... Out in CF has cool Zink facts. ... Gordon Edes has a column on Pedro Martinez returning to the Mets' rotation and dealing with the death of his father.

That is sad (about Tek)---though I did get a chuckle out of Nixon's comment! Seems like Tek is having a bad year for lots of reasons. Is his BA a result of the family turmoil, or is the family turmoil a result of his BA?

Why is HH referred to as Laptop? I saw no reference in the Glossary, so I feel entitled to ask that question without incurring Allan's wrath.

Why is HH referred to as Laptop?

Coincidentally, the answer (I believe) can be found in a link from the SNY article posted in the comments of the Schadenfreude thread:

[from the Globe, spring 2006]
Clay Buchholz, a righthander from Angelina Junior College in Texas, was taken last summer with a first-round sandwich pick by the Sox, as other teams passed because Buchholz had been arrested for stealing 29 laptops from his high school and selling them.

Usually I wouldn't give a crap about stuff like this but it's hard to believe, with Jason seeming to be such a family man, that he ends up getting a divorce. But then you look at how most baseball players are. Their family lives are constantly being pulled this way and that with their schedules, and with his particular work ethic, it could have gotten a bit too much. Or it could have been because of something else. But that's just curiosity speaking where it doesn't exactly belong.

Ha, that would be something. "Don't talk to me with that .213 BA!"

Poor guy, it does seem like he's having a shitty year.

it's hard to believe, with Jason seeming to be such a family man

And he may really be one. Marriages end for all kinds of reasons.

LOL! What I really meant was perhaps his frustration with his performance was affecting how he felt in general---although it would seem that it would take more than that to undo a good marriage.

At any rate, it is sad for them and especially sad for their young children.

Thanks for the explanation of Laptop. Now that I read it, it rings a bell...though only very faintly.

In light of what Tek supposedly said to Slappy before their fight, maybe she told him: "I don't sleep with .225 hitters."

TB keeps creeping back vs. Oakland. Now's it's 4-3 A's in the fourth.

If the A's can win another game against them, that would be awesome.

What did he say to ARod??

allan said...

After Slappy got plunked and was bitching, Varitek supposedly said: "We don't throw at .260 hitters."

I think Bill Simmons first reported it, though I do not think he actually mentioned a source, so ......

(A-Rod was actually batting .278 at the time.)

Anyone recall rumours about Tek and Erin Andrews several years ago? I see them online, but I don't remember that.

nixon33 said...

erin andrews? not too bad, tek, not to bad at all.

My girlfriend insists that Tek cheats on his wife anyway... (you ready for the source? Her friend's hairdresser.)

But moving on, thanks for the link to my photos--but I did leave out all the close-ups I got of Zink, which I'll be posting later. There were just so damn many of them...so...if you'd all come back soon for those that'd be cool....

Two different SoSHers claim to have heard that Tek and Heidi are "you know". Could not tell if they were being honest or sarcastic. I'd lean towards honest, but that could still mean the rumour is 0% true.

One guy said his source told him about Tek's divorce several days ago - before it was in the papers.
