Red Sox - 020 000 022 - 6 9 0Lester (7-4-1-1-5, 103) and Jason Bay (two home runs, one single, two runs, four RBI, one stolen base) led the way.
Orioles - 000 100 020 - 3 5 1
Jonathan Papelbon came into the game with two outs in the eighth inning. He allowed a double to Aubrey Huff, which scored two of Manny Delcarmen's runners and shrunk the Boston lead to one run, 4-3. The Red Sox got some insurance in the top of the ninth, as Dustin Pedroia singled and scored on Ortiz's second double of the game. Ortiz then scored on a fielder's choice from Bay.
Also: Jason Varitek hit a solo homer and Coco Crisp singled and walked twice.
Tampa Bay beat Los Angeles 6-4, so the Red Sox stay 4.5 GB, while the Yankees drop to 10 GB.
***
Jon Lester (3.25, 138 ERA+) / Jeremy Guthrie (3.18, 137 ERA+)
The Red Sox are 28-35 (.444) away from Fenway Park. In other words, they are the Pirates or the Royals or the Reds when they are on the road.
With Tampa Bay hosting the Angels for three games, followed by a weekend set in Chicago against the White Sox, this would be a good time for Boston to close the widening gap in the AL East. The Rays went 7-3 on their just-completed road trip, bumping their divisional lead over the Red Sox from 3 to 4.5 GA.
Boston will play three games in each of Baltimore, Toronto, and New York. Jason Bay: "Three divisional opponents, three teams that I've heard play us pretty tough. ... You have to win on the road."
Guthrie has allowed only one run in each of his last four starts (IP: 6.1, 9, 7, 7) and no more than two runs in six of his last seven outings (2.06 ERA).
Also: Angels/Rays at 7 PM. The Yankees (9.5 GB) are off today before starting a series in Toronto on Tuesday.
***
J.D. Drew left yesterday's game with tightness in his lower back. ... Tim Wakefield tossed a ball for the second consecutive day, but there's no timetable for his return. ... Jonathan Papelbon is still battling migraines.

I'd like to think the missing cupcake said "Manny."
Amy, you're absolutely right... I adopted an older cat a couple of years ago... she was probably 10 or 11 at the time. Earlier this year out of nowhere her stomach ballooned up and it turned out she had developed an inoperable tumor and there was basically nothing the vet could do, but it was still agonizing to make the decision to put her down.
looks like flo giving cabin shit now!
Oops, make that FKR 5, LAAA 2, top of the 6th.
It'll be interesting to see whether the hurricane causes any of their games to be postponed.
Question: did anyone expect Millar to be a starting first baseman in 2008 when he left the Sox?
I am tough as nails about not letting them suffer.
My thing is, it's going to hurt me just as much today or next week or three weeks from now. It's going to kill me either way. But in the intervening time, my dog will suffer - and only because I don't want to live without her.
I feel it's my final responsibility to the dog to put its comfort before my desire to have her with us.
That's what I've told myself each time, in order to do be able to do it.
(And Allan was a useless sobbing blob, no help there.) (To his credit, I add.)
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE, JASON BAY!
Efd, I am sorry about your cat.
GONE!! BAY!! AGAIN!
YEAH, BAY DOUBLE DONG!!!
That had a pleasant elevation.
DOUBLE DONG NIGHT FOR BAY!!!!
Bay! Cupcake!
Hmmm, Moves Bay into the 5-hole and boom 3/4 with two HR's.
Keep him there Terry.
thanks, Amy.
it's going to hurt me just as much today or next week or three weeks from now. It's going to kill me either way.
l-girl, that was pretty much exactly my thought process.
Efd, that's awful. I'm sorry.
My sister's cat was about that age, too.
Laura, my views exactly. Once I know they are suffering and that there is nothing really left except some real long shot, I can let go. When our 18 year old cat stopped eating, at first I thought---let him go when he is ready. After 24 hours of watching him do nothing but sleep without eating or drinking, I realized how stupid that was.
l-girl, that was pretty much exactly my thought process.
Cool. To me the worst thing - even worse than losing them - is knowing they are suffering. When my dogs are sick, it weighs on me so heavily.
Oh god, I must change the subject, I am missing my babies too much.
Safe at 3rd!
Thanks, l-girl.
Cherry is having a rocky night.
5-3 FKR in the bottom of the sixth.
You should have seen me totally freak out when Luna was sick---when I had no car and no vet that I knew in the area. I was all alone (Harv was working up in Maine), and I just stood in panic til the brain snapped together and said, DO SOMETHING, YOU IDIOT!
The force was with him
Now the game gets more fun!
Tek, remember...no more slump. Focus on the ball, not the family, while the game is on.
btw Cherry definitely belongs on the all-girl team... cf. Broadway actress Cherry Jones, for one.
So what did you do? Did you get a ride to an animal hospital, or call a cab, or...?
Let's go, Angels.
Angels v Devil Rays. Good v Evil?
"...doesn't throw to either venue..."
DRINK!
Cherry Jones, just who I was thinking of!
His real name is Rocky, btw. I just checked.
No cabs in Wellfleet! I called three vets---only one was still open, 30 miles away, and then I asked my neighbor in the next cottage if he would drive me. He was wonderful. I thanked him a gazillion times over.
Allan just said Rocky Cherry should be on the all-boxing team.
We came up with Jimmy Ring, and the Bells.
"...doesn't throw to either venue..."
I gotta say, I cracked up a few weeks ago when a pitcher made two straight moves like that, and Don first said "venue," then "location" and Remy said "if he does that again you've got nothing left!"
Hmm, typing that I missed what Tek did. Ground out to first, I assume, seeing men on 2 and 3?
Nope, K, just heard, never mind.
Oh yes, now I remember you saying you asked a neighbour. (Which I canNOT spell w/o a U!)
Thank goodness for other animal lovers, we take care of each other.
oooh, Wellfleet! I will be on the Cape this weekend visiting my Mom in Dennis.
Remy is worse than I am tonight, not keeping track of how many balls that was.
My boy up w/ bases loaded!!
is there an all "sounds like an ice cream flavor" team?
Remy is worse than I am tonight, not keeping track of how many balls that was.
I know! "Was that 3 balls or four?" Well, let's see, he's jogging to 1st base, so what do you think?
[translation: flavour]
Efd, where are you driving from? Does she live in Dennis year round?
We hope to be back in Wellfleet for the weekend, though we have a wedding on Sunday, and I have the first faculty meeting of the year on Friday afternoon. But even 24 hours in Wellfleet is worth the trip.
shatner heads to the transporter room to bring in a new pitcher.
Oo, that would be a tough one, an ice cream flavour team!
Where's Phil for the boxing team?
Hahaha- I was logging on to see if anyone said anything about Rocky Cherry VS Coco Crisp being "the battle of the ice cream flavours", and there it is- right in the last comment on the page.
[translation: flavour]
I can read US. :)
LA Times reporting the Dodgers have acquired Greg Maddux...
Ian Kinsler has been placed on the DL for a sports hernia and could miss the rest of the season.
crap!
We likely have lost Phil for the rest of the game, looking for boxing names and ice cream flavors.
Frank Butterfly? Happy Foreman?
I don't know enough boxers.
Under Armor commercials are the WORST on television. NO contest.
Maybe Francona should have left LBJ in the nine hole a bit longer. He isn't doing as well leading off again.
Clay Buchholz (for Cassius Clay aka Ali)?
We likely have lost Phil for the rest of the game, looking for boxing names and ice cream flavors.
Right!
Clay Buchholz for the boxing team?
Amy, I'm driving up from north-central NJ, not too far from NYC. I'll be leaving early Friday morning in hopes of avoiding at least some traffic.
Ellsbury could be a flavor---some kind of berry.
Francona has the attitude that when you sub one player for another, you keep the original player's spot in the lineup. Ellsbury's batting in Drew's RF leadoff spot, and Crisp is batting in Ellsbury's CF 9-hole.
Efd and I thinking the same about Clay. Spooky.
See, we already have three - Butterfly, Foreman and Clay.
But I don't know boxers either. I only came up with Bell.
Rocky Cherry would fit (Rocky Marciano)
Good luck with the traffic, Efd. Earlier the better, especially the last week of the summer.
Eddie "Knuckles" Cicotte?
S1C, that's where we started!
haha Amy, great minds etc. Oh, and yes she lives there year-round... just moved there about a year ago after 3 years in Manhattan.
Rocky Cherry inspired the team. :)
Mike Tyson played 2b for the 1972-79 Cardinals and 80-81 Cubs.
Clay Buchholz for the all earthen-substances team...
Also of the all-laptop team.
He's on the girls team, the ice cream team and the boxing team. Now he can also be on the losing team.
Mike Tyson's middle name was Ray too, so he's probably a twofer.
Cintron? For Lemon (flavors, not boxers)---Citron? Bad, I know, but it's a tough category.
I was wondering about a Tyson, but I didn't think he'd be named Mike.
Rocky Cherry would fit (Rocky Marciano)
You can put a Marciano Cherry on your ice cream.
Well, there's Bob Lemon, he's more fruit than ice cream.
Dennis must be quite a change from Manhattan.
MDC looking like he's having one of his better nights. With help from the umpire.
For s1c
Picture of a squall line coming into FL from TS Fay.
Strawberry ice cream
Bob Lemon and Chet Lemon are available.
Mark Lemongello would make the all-dessert team but not the all-icecream team.
Bob Lemon - of course!
And the all-fruit team plays in the Grapefruit league, naturally.
DARRYL STRAWBERRY!
Darryl Strawberry for the ice cream team?
LAAA added a run. FKR 5, LAAA 4, top of the 7th.
Hey, I said Strawberry - but not in all caps. :)
Now I am channeling kkh. All these commenters with three initial names.
And the all-fruit team plays in the Grapefruit league, naturally.
Hey, I never thought of that. Very good!
Any players named Ripple or Swirl?
David Cone?
Oops, missed your Strawberry, Laura.
Hey, I am so bad at this that I am excited that I thought of these on my own. Even if others had the same thoughts.
Now I am channeling kkh. All these commenters with three initial names.
Scroll up - you're both channeling me.
Jimmy Ripple's a twofer.
she's always loved the Cape... we used to have a place in Brewster when I was younger. I think after she retired she wanted to try out NYC, but after a couple of years of NYC summers and NYC crowds she realized she wanted to be back up there.
David Cone!!! Yes, obviously on the ice cream team, good one Phil.
Amy, I know, I should have deleted mine. :)
5-4 FKR on an rbi Vlad single.
any infielder nicknamed "scoop"?
ice-cream league games announced by Chip Caray.
Yup, I see it now.
I sometimes think of moving to the Cape when we retire, but I think Wellfleet would be just too desolate in the winter. Dennis is a better year-round choice.
Oh yeah, Jimmy Ripple, I wouldn't never think of that because we called them sprinkles.
[Cue regional ice cream food name talk...]
Scoops Carey.
Heathbar (Slocum) Crunch?
What was I saying about MDC? Shit.
a;dtklasfyjl;afjyl;afjyl;y. More stupid weather cut-ins. This time for a storm that's 100 miles to the north of here and will not affect us.
Assholes.
Ish, cool picture. Latest word is they were all set, generator is primed, shutters are latched, and the dog was left in Virginia so one less thing to worry about.
Latest winds only show about 60, so they should be able to ride this out.
WTF - MDC, get your fragging head out of your nethers.
ice-cream league games announced by Chip Caray.
Oo, nice! I like to have those extras. Like on my girls team, Shirley Povich is the beat writer.
Cut that shit out, MDC.
MDC would be on the all-municipal-authorities team if it still existed.
No players nicknamed Sugar? That could work for both boxing and ice cream. But I can't think of any.
HELLO!!!!!!!!!!
O's have the tying run at the plate. And Bot is in!
We can go out for ice cream AFTER we win!
:>)
Heath Bell's on the Padres.
I've been trying to think of Sugar for the boxing team, w/o even realizing he would be on the ice cream team too.
OK, one more out here, Bot, let's go.
let's go Bot, whiff for Huff!
Allan is like the teacher catching us goofing off in study hall.
Get back to work!
Sugar Cain played in the '30s.
Sugar Ray Marimon is in the Royals' minors.
Don't worry, Allan, we're all watching.
Whoa, Phil, you do good research or have a great memory.
Oh yeah, Sugar Cain came up in another thread recently.
COme on, Bot. Get the ball down.
shit!
SHIT. Where is our BOT?
FUCK
:(
ok, we still have the lead. can we hold it please?????
Huff takes a dump in the punch bowl (of ice cream).
That was a hanging splitter, but Delcarmen should have been able to get a third out. 2/3 of an inning, unless you're a specialist, does not cut it on a team that would like to go to the playoffs.
Phew. Breathe.
Punch Knoll.
Also on the all-assassin-vantagepoint team with Josh Towers?
phew!
OK, would be nice to pick up a run or two -- then Bot comes in and shuts 'em down in the bottom of the 9th, as previously scheduled.
Ok, that was not what I wanted to see, so lets get those runs back you bozos.
bot loves the one-run saves.
Jay Hook.
Arnold Carter had two nicknames: hook and lefty. Both work.
Punch Knoll.
Also on the all-assassin-vantagepoint team with Josh Towers?
That is too funny.
Safe!
Yeah Bozos!
Remy might pronounce Gaylord Perry "parry".
Also on the all-assassin-vantagepoint team with Josh Towers?
Don't forget Texas Schoolbook Depository Jones.
Phil, what a strange mind you have! (I mean that as a compliment. Trying not to get in any more trouble around here.)
not that i'm saying any assassinatin' went on from that building .......
That's a GAP shot! A RIBEYE!
FUCK YEAH WE LOVE YOU
Yeah, boy, thats the way guys!!!
NICE!! That's our Papi!! And what wheels for our little guy!
FY! 79 coming in, 36 going out!
Papi!
i like INsurance
Trying not to get in any more trouble around here.
I think that danger has passed.
Yes! RBI double Ortiz! What we needed.
79 coming in, 36 going out!
HUH?
FY! 79 coming in, 36 going out!
:>)
i have a feeling comments like this will never get old.
so far this is all going according to (my) plan!
Lew Ford (as in theater) also on the all-assassin-vantagepoint team.
OK, sac fly at a minimum, please.
Yeah Papi! Nice!!!!
Papi with the slide! Love it!
Ortiz flashing the speed from third!
Anyone see Tony? It's one of those nights... :)
RIBEYE.
Anyone have a FKR score?
What is that 79/36 line??
Matt Stairs
(Caesar)
Allan did: 5-4 Tampa, top 8.
Still 5-4 FKR. 1 out in the top of the 8th.
Huston Street
(Someone had to have been assassinated on Houston Street)
Amy, it's a reference to the 170 lbs of mouth story.
Cherish the Cabin!
Not a good play by Millar.
I think he still loves us. Subconsciously.
OK, I will go back to re-read the story.
I hate feeling like when in 7th grade and I didn't get the dirty jokes people were telling. I was so naive.
Did I say "was"?
What is that 79/36 line??
Redsock posted a link last week to a great profile of FY that included a number of choice lines from himself, displaying his bravado/sense of humor/cockiness, depending on which side you're on. One of them was something along the lines of "98 coming in, 102 going out" to describe when he'd hit a home run off a hard-throwing pitcher.
I adapted that slightly for the hit he got earlier this inning. :}
Boy, that was one poorly constructed sentence I wrote there.
Also, in case it needs more explanation, that's the speed of the ball, mph.
Ah, thanks, EFD, for the explanation!
Now, Laura, I am not THAT dumb! :))
LAAAAA batter GIDP (nice scoop at first) to end top of 8.
RANDOR!
Double double dong (Bay/V-tek)?
Baltimore showing a good eye in selecting pitchers with good names!
Another K for TeK. So discouraging.
Amy, I know. :)
N-n-n-nope on the double double.
Randor's on the all-He-Man list.
i'm such a nerd, I'm sitting here on the couch trying to refresh the Yahoo boxscore on the Rays game when it occurs to me I can just flip to the damn channel on TV!
FKR have a runner on 2nd with 1 out in the bottom of the 8th.
OK, I have to ask this question. Where do you all think Tek will be next year?
Just preparing myself. Also, I may need to find a new favorite so I want to start thinking about it now.
Randor's on the all-He-Man list.
Phil, totally!
ugh, and the runner on 2nd scores, 6-4 FKR.
Millar, be true to your 2004 love.
millar millars it to left.
double double would be great if they were both Cdn players. "double double" is a big thing here.
Surprisingly few others on the He-Man team. Moss Man? Ram-Man?
OK, I will bite. What does "double double" refer to in Canadian?
a lot of people think the sox will sign him to something like a 2 year deal. if they don't have many other options, i suppose that is most likely.
would he want more yrs/$? would he take more somewhere else?
Darius (Dave) Hillman
It's Tim Hortons-speak for a coffee w/ 2 creams & 2 sugars. If you know how to order that way, you are Canadian.
Of course, I don't use sugar in coffee, so I'll never have the opportunity.
Coffee + 2 creams + 2 sugars.
ok Bot, finish this guy off!
FKR 6, LAAA 4, bottom of the 8th. Rays have men on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs.
Interesting, Allan. I wasn't sure they would keep him at all, given his BA this year, But then I can't think of any other catchers out there that the Sox would want who are available. Certainly Cash isn't a good replacement.
FY dirties the water!!
Nice!!
DIRTY WATER! Finally.
Dirty water and a dirt(ier) uniform!
Dirty Water!
dirty
watah
is
so
dirty
Water.
A complete game for me.
LAAAAAA goes to the top of the ninth.
The water is filthy in Baltimore.
Plus ... we win!
Good game, and it even became a good thread! Night all, hasta tomorrow.
i think the last three innings of this game took as long as the first six!
Dirty dirty dirty.
Good night, everyone.
