G126: Red Sox 7, Orioles 2

Red Sox - 210 030 010 - 7 15 1
Orioles - 002 000 000 - 2 9 1
Dice (5-6-2-5-6, 105) stranded nine base runners in his five innings, Jason Varitek homered for the second straight night, and Kevin Youkilis homered and singled twice, driving in three runs.

Yook's dong was the key hit, as it increased Boston's lead from 3-2 to 5-2. Everyone in the lineup helped out: the first nine Red Sox hits were spread out evenly -- one each for batter in the order.

Jacoby Ellsbury singled twice, stole two bases and scored two runs. Justin Masterson pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

We're doing our part. Keep winning and hope that eventually the Rays lose a couple games in a row ...

Tampa Bay scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to rally from behind and beat the Angels 4-2. Toronto scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to squeak past New York 2-1, dropping the Yankees 11 GB the Rays. The Blue Jays are in 4th place, 12 GB.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.74, 164 ERA+) / Daniel Cabrera (4.78, 91 ERA+)

In his last nine starts (since June 27), Dice has a 1.91 ERA.

In his wins and no-decisions this season, Dice has an 1.87 ERA (115.2 IP, 95% of his innings)! In his losses -- only six innings -- his ERA is 19.50.

SoSH discusses a possible aspect of his pitching philosophy -- would Dice rather walk a guy than "give in" and allow a hit? Are his high walk totals more of a strategy than a lack of control? The many walks -- and the subsequent higher pitch count -- mean more work for the bullpen, however.

And: Angels/Rays and Yankees/Blue Jays at 7 PM.

And Ofer - is King Crimson really still performing!? Well, obviously so, you just said so. Duh. Are they still anywhere near the same band? Listened to them a lot way back when, but haven't in quite a while now. How was the show? It's kinda hard to imagine how they would be live.

Well, 'King Crimson' is kind of an amorphic thing. They haven't had their original lineup since... their second album, in 1970. I think they've had something like 20 band members already. The only constant is Fripp, the guitarist.
The show was very 1983-today heavy, or maybe actually more like 83-95. No songs from before Larks' Tongues in Aspic, which came out in 74, I think, and only 3 songs from the 70s all together.
They sounded great, though. They're playing in a 2-drummer, 2-guitar and bass player lineup. Great rhythm section, with a kinda African feel to it sometimes. And Fripp is fucking amazing. I'm glad I paid an extra 15$ to be a bit closer, cause I got to see his fingers in action. Wow. They're definitely still kicking.

Ooof, long non-Sox related post. And while I was typing it, some good stuff in the Sox related stuff. So all is well.

Yes, that's how they introduced her. "Here we have a blonde girl from Warwick, Rhode Island. Jason Veritek banged her in Baltimore, then gave her tickets to see the game..."

laura k said...

Jason, sorry for misspelling your name.

Amy said...

Veri--tek. There should be something we can do with that.

Amy: To clarify from my earlier Ryan comment, the book on Ryan was he only every tried to throw perfect, unhittable pitches, even to poor hitters. He Always tried to get a strikeout, and seemed to rather give up a walk than a well struck ball.

My father once told me that Ryan had those Dice-K like innings where he'd give up 4 or 5 runs, but that would be it for the game. I can't vouch for how accurate his assesment is, though.

Maybe.

Rob said...

The two subjects were fusing together quite a bit. Tingling and numbness fusing together with Varitek banging Heidi.

Amy said...

James, thanks for your response. I used to watch Ryan pitch early in his career---with the Mets in 69, 70 or so. He was unbelievable. He was wild and had control problems, but when he hit the strike zone, he was unhittable. It was always so exciting to watch him pitch. I don't find DiceK that exciting, just aggravating. Ryan did walk many, but he struck out many, many more.

As you might tell, he is a personal favorite of mine.

nixon33 said...

HAHAHA

laura k said...

That's an unusual concept for a 3some.

Veritek could be Harvard's motto with a hangover.

I was trying to make a connection btn Veritek and Veritas - none as good as this.

SoSock said...

Nice - put a new guy in and 2 balls get hit to him immediately.
But why didn't Tito have him hit for Casey if he was going to make the switch. Give a kid an AB, I say.

Benjamin said...

I forgot to mention that Veritek got that way after downing shots with a co-ed from MIT.

Rob said...

Earlier this season Lester and Dice-K were similar, the way they pitched. They walked a ton of guys. But I always felt excited watching Lester pitch and always felt annoyed watching Dice-K pitch. And that was before Lester's no-hitter. Always felt that huge amount of potential for Lester. Dice-K I just wish would challenge more hitters.

laura k said...

Ump: Why don't you switch to decaf???

laura k said...

I keep thinking why do I need to blog when I'm over here all the time?

LOL. I sometimes feel that way about my kitchen, when we eat out many nights in a row.

Anonymous said...

Well, yeah, I mean, I don't want to suggest that Dice-K is on Ryan's level, and the stuff isn't on the same level; they're only similar pitchers in the unwillingness to pitch to contact. Glavine was like that, too, with runners on. It always seemed like Glavine would pitch to contact until he got into a jam, and then he'd go for the unhittable pitch, even if it meant walking people.

laura k said...

What always pisses me off about the Varitek lovefest in the Boston media is how he gets (deserved) credit for his gamecalling and his effect over young pitchers, but no one wants to call him on stuff like getting Buchholz to throw more fastballs or getting Dice-K to attack hitters. Or the bullpen woes. If he gets credit for good pitching performances (and I think he merits a lot of that), then shouldn't he get some blame for our poor bullpen and Dice-K and Buchholz's skitishness?

By the way, anyone else intrigued by the recently released David Ross?

So what exactly did Pedroia do?

The ump was a jerk - instead of just calling him out on strikes, he had to make a show of it, waving Pede off with his hand (like, get out of my sight, you squirt), so Pedroia took exception to it.

You couldn't see what he said, just that he was tossed. Then he mouthed off more and you could clearly see it, but he had already been ejected.

A Conformer said...

Oops, sorry Amy/Ofer!

Hit bombs? I agree. But how about just hit? As in, not be an automatic out.

Ross's .381 OBP is better than all but 3 Red Sox regulars. He doesn't make outs, he just doesn't hit for any power.

Granted, his .381 OBP is 70 points higher than his career OBP. But his BA is only 10 points higher, so maybe he's turned a corner?
