G130: Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 5 (11)

Red Sox - 004 000 100 01 - 6 9 0
Blue Jays - 200 102 000 00 - 5 9 0
Coco Crisp's home run tied the game in the eighth, Jed Lowrie's second career dong gave the Red Sox a lead in the 11th and Manny Declarmen got the save -- though he needed 26 nerve-wracking pitches -- striking out Jose Bautista with a man on first.

Vernon Wells -- a one-man wrecking crew this weekend (6-for-9, with 3 home runs) -- hit a two-run shot in the first; he also added an RBI double in the sixth.

Burnett had made quick work of the Sox in the first two innings, throwing only 19 pitches, but Boston forced him to throw 32 pitches in the third. With one out, Burnett walked Alex Cora and Crisp, the two guys at the bottom of the order. He got Jacoby Ellsbury on a pop-up for the second out, but Dustin Pedroia blasted AJ's first pitch -- a high and inside 96-mph fastball -- to deep left for a three-run home run.

David Ortiz doubled and Kevin Youkilis singled him in and Boston led 4-2.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.77, 163 ERA+) / A.J. Burnett (4.51, 94 ERA+)

Nick Cafardo, Globe:
Your starting shortstop, third baseman, right fielder, and No. 1 pitcher are out with injuries. One of your young starters was so bad he had to be demoted to Double A. You lost to a division rival, 11-0, yesterday as your other top hurler, Jon Lester, was pummeled and lasted 2.1 innings. Your wild-card lead is teetering.

How are you feeling right about now?
David Ortiz:
We'll be fine, bro. We go through this shit every year. At the end of the day, we'll take another ring with us.
***

Dice vs Toronto on April 30: 7-2-0-2-4

Burnett vs Boston on May 1: 7.2-3-0-5-5

Also: Yankees/Orioles at 1:30, Rays/White Sox at 2, Twins/Angels at 3:30.

We are 5.5 GB in the East, .5 GA of Chicago for the WC.

Raul Ibanez (926)
Glenallen Hill (926)
Kevin Millar (925)

No hate. She's just earned some 'easy joke target' points, and I flow with that.

a run would be dandy.

Especially since the FKR just took the lead.

Jere said...

I noticed this earlier, but now that I see some anti-Cafardo stuff in this thread I'll add to it: He said today that this will be the Sox' last trip ever to Yankee Stadium, barring "a playoff game." Doesn't that sound like what you'd say if you thought there was a chance the two could play in the first round? And there's a possibility only one game is played (a 3-0 sweep in a 5 game series)? Because there isn't--if we play the Yanks in the postseason, there will be at least 2 Sox-Yanks games at the Stadium, because it could only be the ALCS.

And, hey, maybe he'd use the "come on, it's a blog, I wrote it quick" excuse, but as soon as a media type says that, they'd have to admit their blog is no better than the average fan's blog. (The fan, who would actually get their facts straight.) It's great to see the un-cleaned up and edited versions of these reporters' work. You see even moreso how crappy they are.

Jere said...

"No hate." (Waldman)

Hate.

I like women who switch from Yanks to Sox, not the other way around:)

Waldman has brought shame upon Newton, MA.

I was going to say she would've gotten a free name change when she got married, meaning she's ratified whatever spelling she was previously given, but I'm not actually sure she's married.

Just saying that you don't have to keep whatever baggage your crazy parents saddle you with. That's why therapists exist.

allan said...

More Cafardo blogging:

Let's watch A.J. Burnett, who is the type of pitcher who can suffer a momentary lapse as he did in the third inning when he gave up four runs and then settle down and shut you down. Burnett's throwing 96 mph.

****

Nice first "sentence".

laura k said...

But neither should you change your name because a bunch of Red Sox fans don't care for it.

lurkkher said...

"... the Sox' last trip ever to Yankee Stadium, barring "a playoff game."

I don't particularly like Carfardo's writing, but this isn't the example I'd use to illustrate why. There's nothing about "a" in this context that implies exactly one, only at least one.

Isn't English a fun language? ;-)

Benjamin said...

OMG I JUST GOT AN E-MAIL FROM JOE BIDEN.

When I first read it, I thought he meant a 1978-type playoff game.

OMG I JUST GOT AN E-MAIL FROM JOE BIDEN.

I got one from his dad.

Name's Eoj.

A Conformer said...

Oki back for the bottom of the inning?

The thing is, even MFY fans hate Waldman. I'm not sure who her target demographic is supposed to be.

laura k said...

Benjamin said...

(I can guess, but I don't think there's much success reaching it.)

laura k said...

The thing is, even MFY fans hate Waldman.

Yankees fans' opinions suck until they agree with Red Sox fan, then they are proof of correctness.

allan said...

A lot of NYY fans hate Kay too.

laura k said...

Why does she need a target demographic? Who was Troop's target demographic?

Benjamin said...

Pitch efficient.

A Conformer said...

Good. Proactive Tito is a good sign.

allan said...

Q: Is having Bot pitch in a tie game on the road an example of "moneyball"?

laura k said...

"... the Sox' last trip ever to Yankee Stadium, barring "a playoff game."

1978 - I read it that way too. Otherwise, I think he would have said "barring post-season play".

A Conformer said...

BTW, one of the side effects of ON FIRE's injury is that the Sox have no speed on the bench. I bet if Ococ or LBJ were available, they would've run for V-Tek.

Benjamin said...

Seems like poor business strategy to have two awful baseball announcers, but what do I know.

allan said...

Carfardo pre-game:

Some interesting facts ...:

Daisuke Matsuzaka (15-2) has started 22 games this season ...
He has hit 5 batters. ...
He has surrendered 8 homers this season. ...
This is his first appearance this season in Toronto.

****

WOW!

allan said...

Who was Troop's target demographic?

There's a really funny answer to this, but I'm drawing a blank.

Benjamin said...

Runs, please.

Jere said...

kkh, I disagree. Don't you think he should have said, "barring playoff games?" In fact, I'd guess he meant to say "barring a playoff series."

Because if you're saying "at least one," that's wrong, because it means exactly one is a possibility, which it isn't.

allan said...

9 pitches

Jere said...

"He has hit 5 batters. ..."

I laughed at that one, too. He needed some "stat guy" to tell him this?

But you do realize "two awful baseball announcers" is a subjective judgement, right? An opinion, not a fact?

Not this time.

laura k said...

Open goal.

lurkkher said...

Ah, but exactly one is a possibility, a la 1978. But I'll concede the point, since there is no way in hell that Cafardo wrote the sentence with that kind of precision in mind.

Benjamin said...

Yes, but I've lived in NYC and its environs for six years and spoken to many MFY fans and never found a single one who likes either Waldman or Kay. I'm pretty sure one of the NYC tabloids did a poll on the subject a couple years ago which backs me up.

laura k said...

Ah, but exactly one is a possibility, a la 1978.

We're vulnerable to 9-pitch innings too, unfortunately.

Sometime I never got around to posting re Sterling:

Phil Mushnick, July 25, 2008, New York Post: "That we should never expect better from John Sterling doesn't make it any easier. To be stuck in a car, forced to listen to the 20-year Voice of the New York Yankees describe a game, is to be the victim of a crime against baseball, broadcasting and the public trust.

"Monday, in the second inning, the Twins' Brendan Harris scored from second on a base hit to right. There was a play at the plate.

"Having had several opportunities to view the play, Sterling, heard locally on WCBS (880 AM), began the bottom of the second with a windy sermon about how baseball has certainly changed -- in view of the incompetence just demonstrated by home-plate ump Mike Everitt. After all, Sterling said, once upon a time had Bobby Abreu charged that hit, fielded it cleanly, thrown a fastball strike to catcher Jose Molina, who then merely had to await the arrival of Harris before he tagged him out, Harris would have been called out.

"According to Sterling, that was exactly what had happened. That was the mind's-eye scene he crafted for his radio audience. ... To little surprise, TV replays [exposed] Sterling's conclusion as a wishful fabrication that the Yankees were done obvious dirt by a fundamentally flawed ump. It was, in fact, a very close play. The YES TV guys, relying on the same replays as Sterling, concluded it was too close for them to call."

***********

I will say that Mushnick hates Sterling anyway.

A Conformer said...

Fuck, that was even more effective.

laura k said...

I knew tons of Yankees fans who love Michael Kay.

Many do not, but many, many do.

Jere said...

So, wait, could there be a one-game playoff between the Sox and Yanks? Don't they just use the head-to-head as a tie-breaker? I know there's a way you can have a playoff--but I can't think of how this works--do three teams have to be tied?

allan said...

I walked past Michael Kay at Fenway once, after the park had pretty much emptied out. I said nothing.

From a SoSH thread you can't see:
"Our office's FedEx guy comes in one day and says his former sister-in-law (she divorced his brother) met Michael Kay, David Cone, and John Flaherty while they went to Boston in the Ritz. She was a part of 3 or 4 women staying there so they all talk to Kay and Co. Cone eventually goes upstairs with one of the women even after telling them he just had another child with his wife. The SIL continues to talk with Kay and they eventually go upstairs for some sweet lovin'. He proceeds to tell me that Kay takes the SIL out on a date in Manhattan this past week and that they are an item now."

I choose to believe this and I'll keep my eyes peeled for any dirt!

1.) Coco's dong.

2.) In between innings, I was listening to the Yankees game. Sterling: "Swing and a foul back... WATCH OUT!" And you can hear the ball hit several places inside the booth, like they were under fire.
