Red Sox - 004 000 100 01 - 6 9 0Coco Crisp's home run tied the game in the eighth, Jed Lowrie's second career dong gave the Red Sox a lead in the 11th and Manny Declarmen got the save -- though he needed 26 nerve-wracking pitches -- striking out Jose Bautista with a man on first.
Blue Jays - 200 102 000 00 - 5 9 0
Vernon Wells -- a one-man wrecking crew this weekend (6-for-9, with 3 home runs) -- hit a two-run shot in the first; he also added an RBI double in the sixth.
Burnett had made quick work of the Sox in the first two innings, throwing only 19 pitches, but Boston forced him to throw 32 pitches in the third. With one out, Burnett walked Alex Cora and Crisp, the two guys at the bottom of the order. He got Jacoby Ellsbury on a pop-up for the second out, but Dustin Pedroia blasted AJ's first pitch -- a high and inside 96-mph fastball -- to deep left for a three-run home run.
David Ortiz doubled and Kevin Youkilis singled him in and Boston led 4-2.

I know you all hate the woman, but she didn't choose the spelling of her name.
...must buy volvo... must buy volvo...
Wells is seriously over-rated. His BR comps:
Aubrey Huff (960)
Jim Ray Hart (938)
Richard Hidalgo (938)
Trot Nixon (937)
Raul Ibanez (926)
Glenallen Hill (926)
Kevin Millar (925)
Troy O'Leary (924)
Preston Wilson (924)
Leon Durham (921)
"no doubles defense"
SHUT UP JOE!
I know you all hate the woman, but she didn't choose the spelling of her name.
No hate. She's just earned some 'easy joke target' points, and I flow with that.
tek
cora
crisp
a run would be dandy.
a run would be dandy.
Especially since the FKR just took the lead.
I noticed this earlier, but now that I see some anti-Cafardo stuff in this thread I'll add to it: He said today that this will be the Sox' last trip ever to Yankee Stadium, barring "a playoff game." Doesn't that sound like what you'd say if you thought there was a chance the two could play in the first round? And there's a possibility only one game is played (a 3-0 sweep in a 5 game series)? Because there isn't--if we play the Yanks in the postseason, there will be at least 2 Sox-Yanks games at the Stadium, because it could only be the ALCS.
And, hey, maybe he'd use the "come on, it's a blog, I wrote it quick" excuse, but as soon as a media type says that, they'd have to admit their blog is no better than the average fan's blog. (The fan, who would actually get their facts straight.) It's great to see the un-cleaned up and edited versions of these reporters' work. You see even moreso how crappy they are.
"No hate." (Waldman)
Hate.
I like women who switch from Yanks to Sox, not the other way around:)
Cora can't even sac bunt.
com on you little bitch, coco, make it 6.
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKING BUNTING
No hate. She's just earned some 'easy joke target' points, and I flow with that.
Oh, lots of hate. But I guess not from you.
Waldman has brought shame upon Newton, MA.
I was going to say she would've gotten a free name change when she got married, meaning she's ratified whatever spelling she was previously given, but I'm not actually sure she's married.
come on pirate!
It's great to see the un-cleaned up and edited versions of these reporters' work. You see even moreso how crappy they are.
???
THE O'S TIED IT UP!!!!!!!
anyone else hear about the time a tipsy boggs (which probably took 75-80 beers) went to waldman's hotel room.... just a rumour, but ...
I was going to say she would've gotten a free name change when she got married, meaning she's ratified whatever spelling she was previously given, but I'm not actually sure she's married.
Married or not, she was born with the name she uses, including the spelling of her 1st name.
"???"
Meaning when reporters "blog."
RS, i heard about that one. ;)
OMG OF ALL THE WAYS TO SPELL SUSAN ................
That Yank game is ricockulous. Neither starter made it out of the fourth, yet both threw nearly 100 pitches.
Just saying that you don't have to keep whatever baggage your crazy parents saddle you with. That's why therapists exist.
More Cafardo blogging:
Let's watch A.J. Burnett, who is the type of pitcher who can suffer a momentary lapse as he did in the third inning when he gave up four runs and then settle down and shut you down. Burnett's throwing 96 mph.
****
Nice first "sentence".
But neither should you change your name because a bunch of Red Sox fans don't care for it.
"... the Sox' last trip ever to Yankee Stadium, barring "a playoff game."
I don't particularly like Carfardo's writing, but this isn't the example I'd use to illustrate why. There's nothing about "a" in this context that implies exactly one, only at least one.
Isn't English a fun language? ;-)
OMG I JUST GOT AN E-MAIL FROM JOE BIDEN.
When I first read it, I thought he meant a 1978-type playoff game.
Which ain't hap-nin.
OMG I JUST GOT AN E-MAIL FROM JOE BIDEN.
I got one from his dad.
Name's Eoj.
Oki back for the bottom of the inning?
The thing is, even MFY fans hate Waldman. I'm not sure who her target demographic is supposed to be.
Eoj. :)
BOT
(I can guess, but I don't think there's much success reaching it.)
The thing is, even MFY fans hate Waldman.
Yankees fans' opinions suck until they agree with Red Sox fan, then they are proof of correctness.
A lot of NYY fans hate Kay too.
Why does she need a target demographic? Who was Troop's target demographic?
Pitch efficient.
Good. Proactive Tito is a good sign.
Q: Is having Bot pitch in a tie game on the road an example of "moneyball"?
"... the Sox' last trip ever to Yankee Stadium, barring "a playoff game."
1978 - I read it that way too. Otherwise, I think he would have said "barring post-season play".
BTW, one of the side effects of ON FIRE's injury is that the Sox have no speed on the bench. I bet if Ococ or LBJ were available, they would've run for V-Tek.
Seems like poor business strategy to have two awful baseball announcers, but what do I know.
Carfardo pre-game:
Some interesting facts ...:
Daisuke Matsuzaka (15-2) has started 22 games this season ...
He has hit 5 batters. ...
He has surrendered 8 homers this season. ...
This is his first appearance this season in Toronto.
****
WOW!
Who was Troop's target demographic?
There's a really funny answer to this, but I'm drawing a blank.
Runs, please.
kkh, I disagree. Don't you think he should have said, "barring playoff games?" In fact, I'd guess he meant to say "barring a playoff series."
Because if you're saying "at least one," that's wrong, because it means exactly one is a possibility, which it isn't.
9 pitches
"He has hit 5 batters. ..."
I laughed at that one, too. He needed some "stat guy" to tell him this?
9-pitch inning. That's effective.
And with Fuck Yeah, Flo, and YOOOOOOOK in the 10th, I'm optimistic.
FKR: 210 001 1
CWS: 000 400
NYY: 040 30
BAL: 200 32
and
MIN: 10
LAA: 00
Seems like poor business strategy to have two awful baseball announcers, but what do I know.
But you do realize "two awful baseball announcers" is a subjective judgement, right? An opinion, not a fact?
But you do realize "two awful baseball announcers" is a subjective judgement, right? An opinion, not a fact?
Not this time.
Open goal.
Ah, but exactly one is a possibility, a la 1978. But I'll concede the point, since there is no way in hell that Cafardo wrote the sentence with that kind of precision in mind.
Yes, but I've lived in NYC and its environs for six years and spoken to many MFY fans and never found a single one who likes either Waldman or Kay. I'm pretty sure one of the NYC tabloids did a poll on the subject a couple years ago which backs me up.
Ah, but exactly one is a possibility, a la 1978.
How so? Tampa plane goes down and half of the Red Sox are on it?
I LOVE MICHAEL KAY
im gonna get a picture with him when i go to the toilet this week ;)
We're vulnerable to 9-pitch innings too, unfortunately.
Sometime I never got around to posting re Sterling:
Phil Mushnick, July 25, 2008, New York Post: "That we should never expect better from John Sterling doesn't make it any easier. To be stuck in a car, forced to listen to the 20-year Voice of the New York Yankees describe a game, is to be the victim of a crime against baseball, broadcasting and the public trust.
"Monday, in the second inning, the Twins' Brendan Harris scored from second on a base hit to right. There was a play at the plate.
"Having had several opportunities to view the play, Sterling, heard locally on WCBS (880 AM), began the bottom of the second with a windy sermon about how baseball has certainly changed -- in view of the incompetence just demonstrated by home-plate ump Mike Everitt. After all, Sterling said, once upon a time had Bobby Abreu charged that hit, fielded it cleanly, thrown a fastball strike to catcher Jose Molina, who then merely had to await the arrival of Harris before he tagged him out, Harris would have been called out.
"According to Sterling, that was exactly what had happened. That was the mind's-eye scene he crafted for his radio audience. ... To little surprise, TV replays [exposed] Sterling's conclusion as a wishful fabrication that the Yankees were done obvious dirt by a fundamentally flawed ump. It was, in fact, a very close play. The YES TV guys, relying on the same replays as Sterling, concluded it was too close for them to call."
***********
I will say that Mushnick hates Sterling anyway.
Fuck, that was even more effective.
I knew tons of Yankees fans who love Michael Kay.
Many do not, but many, many do.
dear bullpen,
please dont make me go buy a brick of tar H.
Now Red Sox fans are using NYC tabloid polls to back up their opinions.
papelbon = john lithgow.
So, wait, could there be a one-game playoff between the Sox and Yanks? Don't they just use the head-to-head as a tie-breaker? I know there's a way you can have a playoff--but I can't think of how this works--do three teams have to be tied?
I walked past Michael Kay at Fenway once, after the park had pretty much emptied out. I said nothing.
From a SoSH thread you can't see:
"Our office's FedEx guy comes in one day and says his former sister-in-law (she divorced his brother) met Michael Kay, David Cone, and John Flaherty while they went to Boston in the Ritz. She was a part of 3 or 4 women staying there so they all talk to Kay and Co. Cone eventually goes upstairs with one of the women even after telling them he just had another child with his wife. The SIL continues to talk with Kay and they eventually go upstairs for some sweet lovin'. He proceeds to tell me that Kay takes the SIL out on a date in Manhattan this past week and that they are an item now."
I choose to believe this and I'll keep my eyes peeled for any dirt!
If the wild card had existed in 1978, that game wouldn't have been played.
Wild Card = Evil
Wild Card = Evil
Except when it leads to 2004.
Really nice job, Bay!
Canadian leather!
BAY robs GOD!!!!!!!!!!
From that Kay Thread:
"I once heard Michael Kay on the radio talking for quite a while about how he has never had a condiment (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.) in his entire life."
I accept the wild card, but I would abolish it if I could.
From that Kay Thread:
"I once heard Michael Kay on the radio talking for quite a while about how he has never had a condiment (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.) in his entire life."
Scintillating talk over there.
oh, wait, I think the '05 tie-breaker was used only because they knew the loser would be the WC anyway. maybe.
only 16 pitches for bot. i wonder if he'll start the 11th against wells?
I remember Kay on his radio show once had some bet going where if he lost, he's have to eat a ketchup packet straight.
WOW. Great play by Bay, and he made it look easy.
Now he can be the double hero at the plate.
And Paps could go out for a third inning, supposedly.

FJM has the audio.
Lau!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! rie.....

This certainly calls the poll's usefulness into question.
But I did know tons of Yankee fans who loved Michael Kay. Past tense, because I don't know those ppl anymore.
JED!
LOWRIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah
MIND TRICK!!!!!!!!!!
LASER JR.
SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JEDI!!!
Payton's got runners at first and third with two outs.
I can't stand Michael Kay. My point is only that it's down to personal taste.
I'm sure lots of people love Hawk Harrelson.
My point is also that the hate for Suzyn Waldman and John Sterling far exceeds their hate-worthiness. When you have to start criticizing how someone spells her name, you're pretty much showing your hand.
MDC coming in!

True. Today's equivalent would be two teams tied for the wildcard spot, no?
Payton squanders.
Jenks IBBs the bases loaded.
MDC throwing in the bullpen. I REALLY hope Paps go out for one more.
MDC is coming in.
MY COMPUTER WHENT OUT!
1)one-eyed jac with the catch!
2) BAY!
3) LOWRIE!
I admit I am a bit worried with MDC in there, but at least it's not tied.
Just get Vernon "I only hit against Boston" Wells.
One Eyed Jac! Nice.
This is scary.
Radio guys questioning this move, too - day off tomw, low pitch count for Bot.
Jac of Hearts, eh.
MDC is gonna give me a heart attack!
It's only a low pitch count if you don't count warmup pitches, though.
When you have to start criticizing how someone spells her name, you're pretty much showing your hand.
As the one who started the whole thing, I wanna say I was definitely not critizing. Just making fun. As for criticism- I never heard her calling a game, just heard the goodness gracious and crying about Torre bits, so I can't criticize anything.
20 mph difference between fastball and curveball, according to GDGD.
Jac of Hearts, eh.
It's good to see you still alive, you looking like a saint...
dungeon.
Canoe dong. 8-7 MFY.
dp pls
As the one who started the whole thing,
No prob, Ofer. I'm pretty sure I started it by being sick of all the Suzyn-hating.
Which you are not part of. :)
Walk. :(
I need the Sox to win this game before I go on my break. So get to it, MDC.
Griffey double with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th.
didn't mccarver once say that leadoff walks always come around to score? always!
didn't mccarver once say
Once per game, I believe.
i'm getting one of those bad feelings that i always tell other commenters to stfu about.
so, stfu, me!
5.4 from the east german judge
I have spent the entire afternoon bumbling around from store to store, staying in the car most of the time to listen to the game. The only reason I went out is we have the one car, and I needed some lunch. I end up getting stuck out for four hours.
But, three things made me smile:
1.) Coco's dong.
2.) In between innings, I was listening to the Yankees game. Sterling: "Swing and a foul back... WATCH OUT!" And you can hear the ball hit several places inside the booth, like they were under fire.
3.) Lowrie's dong.
Raze 1 out from winning in BlowTown
I have a bad feeling as long as it's MDC on the mound with the winning run at the plate.
One pitch can end it either way, though.
stfu, bad feeling!
so Suzyn didn't exactly catch it, then...picked it up after it stopped rolling? I'm just asking to clarify this.
so Suzyn didn't exactly catch it, then...picked it up after it stopped rolling? I'm just asking to clarify this.
She went under her desk, picked it up when it stopped rolling.
MDC YOU MOTHER FUCKER THROW STRIKES
TWO.
that looked dongish off bat. whew.
1 fair ball hit in 19 pitches - driving me nuts
picked it up when it stopped rolling
knuckleball, i guess
I could picture John Sterling getting under his desk quickly. They probably held each other under the ball stopped rolling.
whew
2 in 20.
ONE OUT, LIL' MANNY!
Rays and Sox in exact same situation right now. Essentially.
Suzyn sounded more composed afterward than Sterling did. She said, "Eh, it wasn't scary. You just calmly get under your desk, then pick it up when it stops rolling."
come on now...
GOD THIS IS ANNOYING THROW STRIKES AND END THIS GAME PLEASE
Castig, at the end of the Top of the 11th: "Manny Delcarmen coming on."
Me: "This one is NOT over."
Konerko comes through.
But one more strike and the dirty water will be flowing.
FIRST ROUND OF DIRTY WATER ON ME!!!
IT FLOWS!
Way to go, Jed!
Lugo who?
WIN!!!!!!
5-5 CWS.
Boy, that was interesting, but it's a W!
And water.
White Sox tie it up!
pitch hasn't even been thrown yet on the radio :)
and the White Sox tie it at the same time. Amazing!
whew is right.
Yes.
Thanks, Manny!
THANK YOU MDC
dirty dirty dirty dirty water
each game hinged on one pitch, and ours went right, theirs went wrong.
YESS!!
see you all on tuesday! enjoy the day off.
It was 7-5 MFY in the 5th, now it's 8-7...
SUCVK ON THAT YOUY FUCKING JAYS MORONS, NOT THAT YOU EVEN FUCKING KNOW HOW YOUR TEAM IS DOING
White Sox tie it up in the bottom of the 9th!
NESN, you can stop calling the Yankees the Evil Empire now. I think, for this year, that nickname is no longer relevant.
holy crap--Whote Sox dude should've been out at plate to end game, but no.
Getz gets his first steal. OCab with a chance at redemption.
with the blackout, i forgot i can watch the rays!
o-cab can win it.
Fail. Extras in Chicago.
fuck you, ocab, you gotta handshake for that k?
O-Cab also with a key mistake leading to yesterday's Rays win.
Remember justin.tv? One of the life-casters has their camera pointing at the TV to show the Brewers and Pirates game. Too funny.
Baltimore squanders too.
Remember justin.tv?
No, should I?
I just saw the tying run for the White Sox- shoulda been an easy out at home, but the catcher (who the fuck is Riggans, anyway?) couldn't handle it. The FKR are getting KILLED on plays at home this series.
nice. I got the Rays/Sox game.
1-2-3 for Jenks. Heading to the bottom of the 10th.
Remember justin.tv?
No, should I?
I think Tim or Nix mentioned it. Or Jere.
Heh. This feed is delayed heavily. The 2-2... 5-3. There's the end of the inning.
TBS has the FKR/CWS game.
Pierzynski singles up the middle on a line drive.
THIS WAS A VERY BIG WIN FOR US
THANK YOU PHIL.
Pierzynski tags and moves to second on a deep fly. Peculiar.
i ahve no idea what justin.tv is
Remember justin.tv?
No, should I?
I think Tim or Nix mentioned it. Or Jere.
Joe Grav recommended it to me, but that was a while back. I think it was in the weekend series against LAAA a month ago.
i ahve no idea what justin.tv is
Must've been Tim. It was a life-casting website and a couple of channels had baseball.
Twins now up 3-0 in the 6th.
Yeah, it must've been Joe then.
So we got 5 weeks of scoreboard watching for 4 teams -- FKR, CWS and MIN for the playoffs and MFY just to see them lose.
This is weird.
wtf?
Upton was way too calm and slow on that tag up. Hope it costs them the game.
Somehow Pierzynski is safe at second instead of being out in a pickle....?
pqweertyuioo-zinsky is such a fucking dirty player!
awesome. what a bullshit call!
he is out. come on.
Pierzynski safe at second in a rundown for no apparent reason. (He hits Aybar with his arm and flops, getting the interference call.)
Interference? Weird play. I didn't see any.
TURNING POINT! The FKR are doomed.
If Pierzynski's called out, Ozzie's going to shit.
HAHAHA they're moving him to third base!!!
After conferring, they move him to third base? WTF?
seems like a real bad call - but it puts the winning run at third.
