G13: Red Sox 12, Orioles 1

Orioles - 001 000 000 - 1 5 1
Red Sox - 210 003 60x - 12 16 2
Four-game sweep! We win a high-scoring game (10-8), a "normal" game (6-4), a tight game (2-1) and a rout (12-1)!

Masterson (5.1-4-1-2-3, 84) pitched into the sixth and the pen turned in 3.2 shutout innings.

Boston got on the board right away as Ellsbury got a pop-up double down the left field line, stole third and scored on Pedroia's single. Pedroia -- 4-for-6, with 3 runs, 3 RBI -- scored on a fielder's choice. Varitek's home run to left in the second made it 3-0.

The Red Sox broke it open in the sixth as Varitek singled with one out. Then, with two gone, Ellsbury and Pedroia singled and Ortiz tripled (he also doubled, back in the first).

Baldelli left the game after third innings with a mild left hamstring strain.

Boston sent 12 men to the plate in the seventh as Radhames Liz and Matt Albers were given the Wang treatment. Bay walk, Lowell double, Varitek 5-3, Green HBP, Ellsbury single, Pedroia single, Ortiz HBP, Youkilis single, Carter F8-SAC, Bay single, Lowell single, Varitek K.

Lefty Hunter Jones made his major league debut in the ninth. Luke Scott grounded out to second. Gregg Zaun grounded out to third (and Yook made a tremendous scoop of Velazquez's low throw). Velazquez made a wild throw on Robert Andino's grounder for an error. Felix Pie put the cherry on top of this game by popping out to left.

***

Mark Hendrickson (3.00, 172 ERA+) / Justin Masterson (4.50, 117 ERA+)

With Daisuke Matsuzaka on the disabled list, Masterson, who threw 60 pitches over four innings last Tuesday in Oakland, gets the ball on Patriots Day. He thinks he'll be good for 75 pitches or 5-6 innings.

Jason Bay:
I played a 10 o'clock game in 'A' ball about seven years ago or something. There were like 3,000 elementary students. They bussed in for it. It will be a lot like that, I guess.
Dustin Pedroia:
It's going to be early. I usually wake up around that time.
In two starts this season, Hendrickson has allowed 10 runs in nine innings, but seven of the runs have been unearned.

I remember Hendrickson best for his Fenway Park cameo back on July 20, 2005. Laura and I were there celebrating our 20th anniversary of meeting. The 6-9 lefty faced only six batters: single, walk, single, double, walk, double. Boston grabbed six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-4 victory.
Hendrickson Against the Red Sox

ERA IP H BB K

Career 8.56 62 95 26 24
@Fenway 8.42 31 49 14 15

Red Sox Batters vs Hendrickson

GMS AVG OBP SLG

Career 14 .351 .403 .539
@Fenway 8 .350 .409 .500
I guess what I'm trying to say is he ain't no good.

Yet the six players now on the Red Sox that have faced him -- David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, Rocco Baldelli, Kevin Youkilis, Jason Bay and Mike Lowell -- have not done well, hitting a combined .216/.280/.311.

Also: Seven of Boston's first 13 games have been played during the day. ... Red Sox bullpen ERA for the last five games? 0.86 (two runs in 21 innings).

There were these two times where I had to wake up at 6 AM to watch a baseball game! Sure it was 7 PM to the players and there were no elementary kids but still! Had to set my alarm to wake up and watch baseball. So um... 11 AM is not early.

Anyone who works at Fenway must have quite the early start this morning, though.

andy said...

I guess it's all relative. It's awesome that Pedroia wakes up so late. Now I will set my alarm clock to tell me when my little man is waking up so I can wish him a good day. The game starts at 8am for me.

Rob said...

Didn't the Angels play a Patriots Day game in the last couple of years? It was in 2007 and it was originally scheduled for 10 AM rather than the usual 11 AM for some reason. I always thought the people making the schedule were snickering to themselves that the Angels fans would have to wake up at 7 AM for the game.

But hey. One 7 AM game vs. what... 5-8 10 PM games for us on the east coast?

The game never did start at 10 - it was delayed by rain for quite awhile. The previous day's game was rained out so they were going to do a double-header on Monday but because of the rain were only able to play one.

I've always been familiar with the NY Marathon route, how it snakes all around, covering all five boroughs. But I never actually looked at the Boston Marathon route until recently. I was surprised to see it's basically a line. With one slight turn.

A more fitting route for Boston would be to have runners go off in all different directions with no signs or markers, and the first one to reach the hidden finish line wins.

andy said...

Any oatmeal?

You give up over .300 to opposing batters against Boston you are asking for some hurt.

andy said...

Nothing beats the Japan game. I think it was 3 am for us.

andy said...

Do you think Tito set the lineup by the order the guys straggled into the clubhouse?

andy said...

What kinds of women does FY get do you think? He is going to sleep pretty late to be getting up at 11. There has to be women involved.

andy said...

Who does he hang around with on the team?

Rob said...

Strap a Tom-Tom to your waist.

laura k said...

"There has to be women involved."

Could be men involved. There may be hope for you yet, Andy.

allan said...

FY gets tall women. Of course, to him, they are all tall.

Rob said...

Jim Rice is doing studio analyst today on NESN for Marathon Monday... They brought a graphic up onto the screen that showed the total distance Rice trotted around the bases from all the home runs he hit adds up to slightly more than 26 miles. Only he ran that from 1974 to 1989. That was an awkward segment.

Rob said...

FY gets tall women. Of course, to him, they are all tall. That's not always a bad thing. He won't have to hurt his neck to see what he wants to see.

Rob said...

I love Green's red shades.

laura k said...

I loved waking up for the Japan game. Watch a baseball game and still have the whole day in front of you. Perfect for a morning person.

Rob said...

95 mph. Didn't know he threw all THAT hard.

Benjamin said...

It's a beautiful morning for baseball.

Jere said...

It's gonna be in the 70s for the Yankee series this weekend!

Two outs.

laura k said...

Raining here. Beautiful day to be indoors watching baseball!

Rob said...

Jere I'm hearing 85° for Saturday. I'm not sure if that's absurd yet or not.

Rob said...

Milky sunshine here and 54°

Rob said...

Fuck yeah! Trademark Play!

Jere said...

another ho hum play for Dustin

nick said...

Chevy rally caps! 500% increase in bedbugs worldwide. cold in my house, but I'm not turning on the heat. and...

Jere said...

oh yeah, it does show 80 for Sat in Boston. I had checked Providence and it only shows 75 so I figured less in Boston. But this is far away--we'll see.

Jere said...

knew that was trouble!

nick said...

oooh that was bad.

laura k said...

Nice defense Baltimore!

Rob said...

Hendrickson is just stupid tall. If he threw 90 he could be very good with his height like Chris Young but not at 85-86.

Rob said...

One of my favorite parts of spring. Looking at that 7-Day and seeing ridiculous numbers and seeing if they come true. Conversely WHDH shows 70/73/75 for Fri/Sat/Sun. WBZ is 77/85/72.

Rob said...

Speed kills.

Jere said...

SB even though ball got away

Rob said...

I'd like to see Lyndon get real frisky at third base and make it look like he's going to steal home. I remember Jose Reyes did that and made the pitcher balk.

Rob said...

The way FY's playing so far, I think he had a good breakfast this morning. Not bad for normally waking up right about now.

Jere said...

Teach Papi those adjusting skills Dustin

Benjamin said...

Great start.

Lord Lynch said...

Afternoon from sunny London England, for the not-good enough to remain British Day game!

Rob said...

If Tiz is ahead of breaking balls and behind fastballs, he should be just right for 86 mph.

Jere said...

Yeah Papi!!!

allan said...

may only face 6 batters today too!

Rob said...

Castig and Obie think that ball could have been caught. Freel is a monster noob.

Lord Lynch said...

Didn't this pitcher used to play for the Philadelphia 76'ers?

nick said...

the O's look like I do in the field.

allan said...

that's scott. freel is at 3b today

Rob said...

Didn't this pitcher used to play for the Philadelphia 76'ers?Yep. He played for four different NBA teams. I just can't be bothered to remember which ones. Philly is one. Sacramento is another.

Jersey and Cleveland the radio tells me.

Jere said...

NESN didn't give a good replay of how high it hit on the wall, but it wasn't very high at all. Still woul've taken a really nice catch running into the wall though.

Jere said...

Let's get 11 runs before an out.

Rob said...

Like to see an episode of Rocco's Modern Life right here. With dongs.

Lord Lynch said...

Cheers Ish...

allan said...

looked live like it hit off the 3rd or 4th place team in the standings

RBI fielder's choice for Roccccoooo

allan said...

DO: Pedroia in the back door

L: isn't that what andy's hoping for?

Rob said...

Putting the radio and TV together Izturis grabbed it deep in the hole and Pedroia's in the back door.

nick said...

wasn't sure if I'd heard that right. guess I did.

question is, does varitek have english on his balls?

allan said...

"english on his balls" gives another level of meaning to "pine tar on his bat"

grab a pair > stranding a pair

allan said...

18 min wait!!

Jere said...

5 up, down for the Birds

laura k said...

18 minute wait = DRINK!

Rob said...

Radio talking to Dennis Drinkwater of Giant Glass. Talking about how he never misses a game. Obie asked him if he missed a game does he get emails and people calling his cell? He says he'll leave his seat during the sixth and you won't believe the calls he gets. Where'd you go?

Oh look a baseball game!

Jere said...

They should ask him where Kapstein is this year!

Rob said...

They're talking about the New York Giants.

Drinkwater not endearing himself to those of us listening on the waves.

Rob said...

He is bubbly, that's for sure.

Jere said...

WHy do you think he called it Giant Glass?

Jere said...

I totally respect the multi-town sports fan. Of course.

Rob said...

Ha that never occured to me. That makes sense doesn't it? Giant Glass. Who'da thunk it?

allan said...

is his app on the radio basically a commercial for giant glass? i mean, he isn't anybody, right?

laura k said...

I have wondered (vaguely) why it is called Giant Glass. Now I know.

Jere said...

Yeah, the guy is Sox all summer, Giants all winter. He had a great 2007.

laura k said...

Absolutely, a free ad. Sponsors always get those.

Rob said...

ENGLISH ON HIS BALLS.

Ride, Captain, ride on your mystery ship!

Jere said...

Varidong!

allan said...

tek has morning wood

laura k said...

Captain Homer! A Varidong!

Rob said...

Captain Kirk is not pleased.

nick said...

Is it unpatriotic to that have much English today?

Rob said...

Get it on, bang a dong, get it on.

nick said...

redsock said...

tek has morning wood

were you just waiting for the opportunity to use that?

Rob said...

Heidi's jacket probably gave Tek his morning wood.

laura k said...

bang a dong :)

nick said...

Timlin threw a strike?

allan said...

actually, no

laura k said...

Did Don say Timlin threw a strike? He's blathering about Ole Toast and Ms Toast, who is running the marathon

Rob said...

Hendrickson was apparently was a pretty good foul shooter. Over 80%. Not exactly a recipe for an all-star career though.

Rob said...

Someone said he threw a strike. I still don't believe it.

Rob said...

Pedroia doing a chevy commercial on the radio. "Hi this is Dustin Pedroia. In this economy an import truck just doesn't make sense."

allan said...

shouldn't pie's number be "3.14159265..."?

laura k said...

Come on now, get up...

Jere said...

Puh-lenty of seats JUST released for the Yanks series. This kills me because I'm already going to all three games. It's like having the best parking spot and seeing another good one open up--you can't get it!

Looks like just single seats.

Anonymous said...

Uh oh man down..

Rob said...

In this economy getting hit in the head with a ball doesn't make sense.

Anonymous said...

Back of the neck, this could be a real problem :(

nick said...

poor guy. and here I am thinking about how the camera is focusing on his bald spot.

laura k said...

I had the same thought re balding head.

Rob said...

NESN busy showing replays instead of showing him leaving the field.

laura k said...

ish :)

Anonymous said...

Ruben Andino the PR.

allan said...

kirk should waive bones's tricorder thing over freel -- fix him right up

Jere said...

Jack Endino fills in on bass?

laura k said...

The :) was for "in this economy".

Jere said...

that was almost the coolest play.

Unknown said...

Pedroia is doing his part to save this economy.

I wish they were showing this game on TV. I haven't missed the Patriots Day game in years.

Jere said...

Wait, where are you again? James?

nick said...

geez. took me a minute to figure that one out Jere.

producing a run?

Jere said...

"producing a run?"

Nice! For The Byrds?

Unknown said...

I'm in New York.

Gameday says "deflected by Mike Lowell." With you saying that was "almost the coolest play" I'm reminded of that awesome ball-off-Mark-Loretta's-glove-right-to-Alex-Gonzalez play from a few years back.

I'm going to imagine that's what happened.

Benjamin said...

More runs, please.

nick said...

there ya go. That's Nirvana.

trying to make a connection to Endino's Earthworm, but I'm not coming up with it.

allan said...

Bob has a new "wife"?

Rob said...

Meanwhile I told my mother about the pick-off-the-head play and she... I swear she is "That guy." She asked me, "Did Masterson feel bad?"

She's also watching a show on A&E narrated by Bill Curtis. I'm Bill Curtis, and I just found the internet!

I watched an episode where he was talking about the Bobbit couple where he rapes her and she cuts off his dong. That was very, very entertaining, having that narrated by Bill Curtis.

Unknown said...

All these cool graphics on Gameday are pretty sweet, though. Masterson has thrown 21 4-seamers to 11 sinkers? Good to know.

Rob said...

86 mph is not quite so right for Papi.

nick said...

where is papi's dong? did somebody bobbit?

Jere said...

James--no mlb.tv? All you need is someone else's account and password.

Jere said...

Don't get too tired Rocco! These leisurely triples are the best kind for him

Rob said...

I feel like that's what happened to Papi. Someone lopped off his dong and he can't find it.

Now I'm reminded of the song, "Detachable Penis."

ENiiiiineeee

Rob said...

Rocco really did look like he was out for a jog in the park. Free and easy. It really is a shame he has the fatigue problems he has.

Unknown said...

Jere - not yet. I just moved to Brooklyn and I don't have much in the way of disposable income, so the startup cost is a little much.

Probably in a month or so once the paychecks start building up a little.

I find it embarrassing for America that Mr. Bobbit's full name is John Wayne Bobbit.

Jere said...

Yeah but if you have someone else's name/password it's free!

laura k said...

Say hi to Brooklyn for me. I have deep roots there.

allan said...

james - send me an email

Jere said...

Or just head to one of NYC's many fine Red Sox establishments.

laura k said...

MLB audio is a great deal if you like listening to games on radio. $15 for the whole season ($19 Cdn).

Joe Grav said...

The Boston Marathon women's race just had the closest finish ever...wow

I went outside to watch the wheelchair, women's and men's leaders go by (I'm at the 21 mile mark)... they are all truly unbelievable.

Back at my desk now for Sox/homework.

nick said...

and the audio is only $10 if you buy the iphone app. You can't play it on the computer, but I have my phone everywhere and the computer not always. plus you get GD on the phone.

Rob said...

Joe, looking at your icon I am reminded about how glad I am the Red Sox and Bruins are on at different times today.

Joe Grav said...

How did we get our Runz?

Joe Grav said...

L- i threw the check in the mail yesterday for Jos Fenway outing. yay

Unknown said...

Brooklyn is pretty awesome.

I remember reading some stupid article about Fort Point and the disappearance of artist lofts in Boston. The whole thing was a lament about how bad Boston's arts community is (which is horseshit. The galleries, for the most part, do , but the open studios are incredible and there are two top notch art schools.)

One of the artists they interviewed said something to the effect of "one of my friends from New York came down and asked 'where's Boston's Brooklyn?' and I had to tell her, 'we don't have one.'"

The population of Brooklyn is 3 times that of Boston. Of course Boston doesn't have a "Brooklyn."

Whereabouts in Brooklyn did you haunt?

laura k said...

I used to write a lot about Jean Driscoll, who won the women's wheelchair division 8 times - 7 of them consecutive.

Boston is a great wheelchair race - the first to recognize wheelchairs as official racers (no thanks to the BAA).

Jere said...

No offense to iphone users, but I kinda hope they come up with an app that solves all humanity's problems but then everyone quickly turns into vampires like in I am Legend.

Unknown said...

Is Baldelli hurt? Why'd they take him out?

Joe Grav said...

It's really incredible to watch them go by, L. I don't know how they even stay in balance on those racing wheelchairs, let alone push themselves thru 26.2 miles

Jere said...

I think of Boston as very similar to Brooklyn, whereas it's nothing like Manhattan.

Rob said...

The triple probably gassed him.

Jere said...

THey seem to think Rocco hurt himself getting out of the way of a foul ball when he was on third. Or maybe the triple tired him out.

Jere said...

That was an admittedly generalized statement I made about the cities by the way.

Joe Grav said...

I was just about to mention the pizza-throwing incident

Unknown said...

I walked by a big truck a couple days ago that was a mobile Rocawear store. I was curious, so I started in. However, they had bouncers, and they said I couldn't go in dressed like I was.

We certainly don't have *that* in Boston.

laura k said...

Nick, does iPhone pay you a commission? You could ask for one at this point.

Joe, thanks, no prob - you're not even last. :)

James, my parents both grew up in Brooklyn, and my elderly relatives lived there throughout their lives. I lived in the south Slope, and Park Slope proper, for many years. A few of them with Allan.

Is the population of Bklyn really 3x that of Boston? I wouldn't have thought so.

Jere said...

Well Brooklyn is the fifth largest city in the US--according that sign on the Welcome Back, Kotter theme. Or was it fourth?

Joe Grav said...

Im going to the US Open tennis tourney this summer so expect another email asking for travel tips soon, ;)

The mission: plan a great week in New York without ever going into Manhattan. I'm sure if anyone can help me with that, it's you

Rob said...

Why are they going back to the pizza incident?

nick said...

"no matter how mad I am at you, I'd never throw food at you."

Jere said...

guy spilled a beer on a foul ball to same area

Joe Grav said...

Ish, did you see the massive-ass Bruins flag they passed around the loge before game 2? they ought to try that at Fenway before a big game

nick said...

you'd think, L, but no. I don't mean to be too evangelical about it, but there are aspects of it that are terrific and handy (other parts are annoying as all get-out (like all technology (and people))).

Rob said...

That poor pizza.

allan said...

thought i just saw jere in the stands, but then i realized he's not there

Joe Grav said...

That man loves his balloon animals.

Rob said...

Ish, did you see the massive-ass Bruins flag they passed around the loge before game 2? they ought to try that at Fenway before a big game • No, I was on my way home - Walked in the door a minute and a half into the first period. Think Lucic's suspension was fair?

Unknown said...

Brooklyn has 2.5 million people. Boston has about half a million. So it's actually more like 5 times the size.

Joe - I assume you don't mean me, because I've been here all of two weeks. I know where all the good repertory cinemas are at, though.

nick said...

Jere's famous balloon head?

Rob said...

thought i just saw jere in the stands, but then i realized he's not there • I had a moment like that earlier!

Jere said...

I thought I saw myself, too! Gray jersey, blue sleeves, walking down stairs, but his head got cut off. I was SURE it was gonna be me!

Rob said...

Mild left hamstring strain for Rocco.

Rob said...

Castig pronounced Pie's name Pi-eeee. Now he got it right. Pee-eh

Unknown said...

Jesus, Rocco really can't catch a break.

Yesterday Jose Reyes hit a triple where Corey Hart lost the ball in the sun and let it drop right by him. So why is that a triple, and this a reach-on-error?

Jere said...

Markakis probably should've caught the Rocco ball, but slightly overran it.

allan said...

Corey Hart lost the ball in the sunHe should also wear his sunglasses during the day.

Unknown said...

Redsock - Keith Hernandez said the exact same thing. He had the glasses up on his head.

Joe Grav said...

I meant L, not James. haha

Ish, that suspension is BULLCRAP

Good to see Masterson doing well

laura k said...

Joe, I'm up for that! One boro, or do you want to touch all the non-Manhattan boros? There are tons of great things to do. It just takes more time to get to them.

The wheelchair racers are SO strong. Massive upper body and CV strength. It's a great sport to watch, with lots of strategy, drafting, etc.

Jere said...

Jere said...

ish--is Castig still keeping track of Wall balls?

Joe Grav said...

L, I'll be based in Queens, so anything convenient to that. I'll email you once I have my plans finalized.

Come on Papi. SMASH IT. If Vtek can remember how to hit YOU CAN TOO

laura k said...

You know, when Brooklyn became part of NYC (amalgamation), everyone thought it would be the death of Manhattan, and that Bklyn would be ascendant. Because Brooklyn had all the land, and Manhattan was so tiny.

It was before the advent of the skyscraper (before steel bldgs). No one imagined a city that would grow vertically.

Oh look, a baseball game! /ish

Rob said...

He does, Jere. He'll bring it up once in awhile. So and so has so many wall balls.

And you can see Manhattan in miniature form. The famous panorama at the Queens Museum.

Jere said...

joe, I assume you'll try to see a game at Citi Field?

Unknown said...

I've never even been to Queens, yet. I should make my way out there. I've heard the new Mets ballpark is really great.

It seems like an increasingly large number of people are calling the new Yankee Stadium "Coors East" which I like quite a bit.

laura k said...

Friends of ours from up here recently did a Flight of the Conchords tour of NYC. The unisphere in Flushing Meadows Park figures prominently.

Joe Grav said...

I will do my best to do that. I stopped at Citi Field a few weeks ago when I was at St. John's University working at a BC women's basketball game against the feared Red Storm. Seems like a sweet park

Rob said...

Looks like Carter's a crappy bench player. Needs to play every day.

O Matt Albers on Patriots Day:

“I’m from Texas, and I guess we don’t really celebrate Patriots Day too much, so I don’t really know too much about it. I’ve heard about it, and it‘s obviously a pretty cool thing. They shut things down here and have the Marathon in the morning, with the day game here, so it sounds like a pretty big holiday. I think it’s pretty cool to celebrate the patriots and everything they did for us.”

laura k said...

we are missing a good nickname for Bay

Rob said...

AT&T guy: Today we have this cool feature where you can sign up to track your favorite runners and we'll send you text messages.

Joe: "Oh, that's very nice. You know Dawn Timlin, Mike Timlin's wife, came back to run the marathon again this year."

Joe Grav said...

YES!!!!! THE BEAR COMMERCIAL

Unknown said...

O Aubrey Huff on if he could imagine himself running a marathon: “No, not at all. Honestly, I get tired driving 26 miles. I couldn’t imagine running it.”

Rob said...

L, I've got a good name for Bay.

Thunder Bay.

Benjamin said...

Bay's come back down to earth a bit these past few games.

Rob said...

I get paranoid after riding a bicycle 26 miles about whether I could still have kids or not.

Jere said...

I usually just call him Thunder

Unknown said...

I'm a fan of the Bay Hey Kid or the Bay State Bomber, but neither is especially good on the brevity front.

I also have a weak spot for Canadian Baycon.

Jere said...

I see ish said it too--but I have used it on this board in the past. Thunder Bay that is

Joe Grav said...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

oh man

Did anyone else watch the Today Show? Gingrich was on raising an almighty stink about Obama daring to shake hands with Hugo Chavez.

He said something to the effect of "We never shook hands with the Russians!" which is laughable for four reasons:
1) Fuck Newt Gingrich
2) Yes, American and Russian leaders met and shook hands all the time
3) To compare the status/power of Venezuela to the old Soviet Union is just mind-boggling
4) Fuck Newt Gingrich

Joe Grav said...

B'EH?

Benjamin said...

Hudson Bay?

Canada Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador?

laura k said...

Oh yeah Thunder Bay, I forgot about that. Nice Cdn touch.

OK Thunder it is. :)

I fell out when Joe (?) got us with Homre the other night. Can't believe no one thought of that earlier.

Jere said...

Of course, I'd prefer to tie in You Can't Do That on Television to any Canadian's nickname, but everyone but me seems to be too old or too young for that show.

allan said...

Bay: "Palest White Man"?

laura k said...

Thunder Bay is a town in Ontario, on Lake Superior.

Joe Grav said...

Yea that was me, but I think Jere had used it before too. Not sure though.

Homre :D
