G1: Red Sox 9, Yankees 7

Yankees - 020 300 200 - 7 12 1
Red Sox - 010 013 31x - 9 10 0
After retiring the first five batters on 13 pitches, Beckett gave up solo dongs to Dumbo and Granderson -- and then singles to Swisher and Gardner. CI tangibly grounded out to end the second.

Youkilis doubled to start the second and Beltre brought him in with a one-out sac fly to deep center.

The bottom of the order got to Beckett in the fourth. Cano doubled and two outs later, Swisher walked. Then Gardner and Jeter singled -- and pulled somewhat of a surprise double steal. Beckett couldn't get the third out in the fifth and was pulled with two men on: 4.2-8-5-3-1, 94/54.

Two-out singles -- all crisp line drives -- by Drew, Cameron, and Scutaro brought in a fifth-inning run. An error moved the runners up, but Ellsbury struck out looking with runners at second and third. CC lost his command in the sixth. FY walked, Victor doubled into the left field corner, and Yook smoked a triple over Swisher's head into the right field corner. With one out, Beltre's single to Cano's right tied the game at 5-5. But New York came right back in the seventh. Ramirez put two guys on and Okajima let them come around to score.

The Sox took the lead after the stretch. Scutaro singled off Park and Pedroia homered to left. When Yook doubled, Marte came in and wild pitched him to third. Then Dumbo's passedballa (!!) gave Boston its first lead of the night.

In the eighth, Bard allowed a two-out walk, but retired Teixeira on an FC. In the home half against Joba, Cameron singled with one out and Scutaro walked. With two outs, Pedroia singled to right to make it 9-7.

In the ninth, Papelbon retired Slappy and Cano, then allowed a two-out single to Dumbo. He got Granderson to ground to third for the final out.

Beckett, RamRam and maybe Jeemer were shaky, and there were no real fielding gems. Damn shame we can't hit/score.

NYDN's Bill Madden picks Red Sox (96-66) to win East over Yankees (93-69) and Rays (88-74).

allan said...

NYDN has 28 reasons why the Yankees will win their 28th title this year. This first one?

1. They're still the Yankees.

Well, that convinces me! But maybe you are not swayed so easily:

2. Derek Jeter is in his contract year.
[So he's older. And?]

5. Roy Halladay is eating cheesesteaks.
[The Jays were going to challenge NY? Halladay in Philly would seem to argue in favour of the *NL* in the WS.]

7. A.J. Burnett still has something to prove.
[That he's not an inbred hillbilly? Good luck!]

21. They aren't the Mets.
[Neither are the other 28 MLB teams.]

28. The hunger is still there.
[CC agrees with this!]

I will probably be in Professor Thom's tonight, so I won't be able to thread. But it should be pretty damn fun (and crowded) down there.
Go Sox!

Slight change to the lineups I posted this AM. Beltre and Drew have been switched, breaking up the LHs.

Are we ready to play ball!?

Bonjour, all!

Oh hi, everyone! Out and about with a couple of stops to make and then home in time for the first pitch. Woo hoo!

I've been pretty well engrossed with hockey lately but damn, I've got baseball fever.

laura k said...

Ofer, it's great you get to watch the game in the same time zone!

I may have to listen w/o threading tonight. I'll have to see how work goes. I'll try to pop in now and again.

Rob said...

A friend of mine from Twitter who has season tickets sent me up a couple for the Dodgers game on 6/19. I'm really excited. Straightaway center, right next to the batters eye. I'll be able to see Manny again!

Pepe Lepew said...

Ish, did you hear Canada beat the U.S. for the gold medal in hockey? :)

Sabres games are now banned in my household because there is entirely too much swooning going on over Ryan Miller.

DAMN! Last minute ice cream thing at my sister's. And since I don't participate in all the Jesus stuff and the ham dinner with the rest of them earlier, I'll be hexed if I skip this also. Oh well, I'll be watching there and should be home by the 2nd or 3rd inning. Screw should be, WILL be. Gotta have my JoS fix on opening day!

This SportScience guy on ESPN blows.

Fenway gives up 1.30 HR/g, while the average ballpark gives up 1.07 HR/g. Ergo, Fenway is a home run hitter's park.

Brilliant.

allan said...

lester is pitching the next game. we'll lose on wednesday.

Edward Lee said...

"don't do that diving shit again, fy."

To avoid breaking a finger, sure. But it probably maximized his chances of reaching safely -- he reached the bag at full extension without sliding on the dirt, and he avoided getting tagged by Sabathia.

SoSock said...

Damn ice cream. OK, OK, the ice cream was good, the shit on the TV screen was not. Fucking Yankees......

allan said...

there may be dueling studies, but i thought that diving always slows you down -- sprinting straight through is quicker.

nick said...

WW.

nick said...

I don't know if I've ever heard ARod speak. That's not what I expected.

SoSock said...

Beer Friday night...Wine last night..... Frm the looks of this game, liquor might be in order tonight. Bottle of Crown maybe?

Amy said...

At least Beckett is getting ARod out.

But not too many others...

Top 4 are 1-for-11. Sigh.

SoSock said...

SASAHE!

Edward Lee said...

"there may be dueling studies, but i thought that diving always slows you down -- sprinting straight through is quicker."

If you suck at it, it is. While you're running at full speed, you want your last step to launch you horizontally so that you touch the bag before your chest hits the dirt. You can really fly through the air with that last step.

Most people don't know how to do it correctly and end up falling over and sliding 5 feet in the dirt.

SoSock said...

I'll be surprised if Beckett comes back out for the....nevermind
