G12: Rays 7, Red Sox 1

Rays - 022 003 000 - 7 7 0
Red Sox - 000 000 001 - 1 5 1
Garza (8-4-0-2-5, 115) did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fifth (and the batter, Adrian Beltre, was a dead duck at second trying stupidly to stretch his hit into a double).

A Boston runner would not touch second base again until the eighth.

Meanwhile, Carlos Pena and B.J. Upton each hit two-run homers off Lester (6-7-7-3-5, 104), and Ben Zobrist poked a two-run single.

The Red Sox (4-8) have not played this poorly through a season's first 12 games since the 1996 team opened 2-10. (That club was also 2-12 and 3-15 in the early going.)
Example
Matt Garza / Jon Lester
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, DH
Youkilis, 1B
Drew, RF
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
Varitek, C
Cameron, CF
4 GB. As Peter Abraham says, "It's a good time to be a negative fan."
Example
Linescore of the (Yester)Day:
Mets - 000 000 000 000 000 000 11 - 2 9 2
Cardinals - 000 000 000 000 000 000 10 - 1 15 0
Joe Mather pinch-hit in the bottom of the 10th inning, and stayed in to play center field, third base, and pitch (he allowed the two Mets runs).

If Jacoby is that hurt he should be on DL and call up Reddick....
Suck it up kid.....

Win

What is this "win" of which you speak? Do you mean "wind"? Is there a breeze?

allan said...

If we DL him, he's out for two weeks, though it could be retro'd to the first day he missed. So if he is going to be back within 15 days, maybe working through it short-handed is best.

Plus Reddick is hitting .138/.167/.172, the worst of any PawSoxer with more than one game played.

allan said...

Suck it up kid.....

Also, wasn't this the attitude that MDC and Dice (and others probably) took last year, which pissed Theo off so much that he actually said on WEEI that players must be honest about their bodies with the FO?

allan said...

Sounds like that "mental health day" Reddick had on Thursday was a cover story!

PawSox broadcaster Dan Hoard:

For the past two days, Josh [Reddick] has essentially been hiding in a Boston hotel room in case either Mike Cameron or Jacoby Ellsbury had to go on the disabled list. After the Red Sox determined that neither outfielder would be placed on the D.L., Reddick rejoined the PawSox in Rochester on Saturday night and is back in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Wings.

"I was told not to tell anybody that I was leaving these guys, so it was pretty hush-hush," Reddick told me. "I did tell my parents. I said, 'Look - I'm going up there but there's no guarantee that I'll be activated.' They keep a pretty good track of what's going on in Pawtucket and I knew that if they saw I wasn't in the lineup they would say, 'Hey, what's wrong? Are you hurt?' So I had to tell them just in case."

So how did the 23-year-old spent his time?

"A lot of sitting around and waiting," Reddick said. "The first night I didn't do a whole lot. I basically went and grabbed some food and headed right back and enjoyed the hotel hot tub. I think I fell asleep at about 8:30 that night. They told me three different times the first night that I got there that, 'We'll let you know something tonight.' Then it was, 'We'll let you know something tomorrow because we don't know if we're going to play because of the weather.' Then they called me in the morning and said, 'We'll let you know around 4 o'clock. Just have your mind set to come to Fenway or go back to the other guys.'

Does Matt Garza know that there's a raccoon sitting on his chin?

Garza's chin is another bit of evidence for my theory that a lot of ballplayers play some type of "how totally fucked up and ugly and disgusting can i make my facial hair and still get chicks" game.

Happy birthday, Kid!

laura k said...

Finally I can thread.

But not much to thread about today.

Whose birthday is it?

nick said...

The camera showed a kid in the crowd. Remy said he met him before the show and today was his birthday. But Remy couldn't remember his name so he wrote "kid" on the screen and said "I'll just call him Kid".

another one of those moments.

laura k said...

Geez Remy, write it down

allan said...

Spit Boy is pitching a perfect game!

laura k said...

So LaRussa used a position player as a pitcher in the 20th inning last night, instead of a starter.

I used to think he was so smart.

allan said...

no more perfecto. fuck you, garzer.

allan said...

He may not have had much choice, depending on how he was using people. I think he had a pitcher in LF, too.

laura k said...

Yeah, he had already used 10 pitchers. I was kind of thinking that wasn't necessary.

allan said...

He still thinks his IQ is about 80 points higher than it really is.

P.S. I hate baseball.

nick said...

OK, then... a non baseball story:

An Australian publisher has had to pulp and reprint a cook-book after one recipe listed "salt and freshly ground black people" instead of black pepper.

laura k said...

OMG can that be true?? I am skeptical. I mean, I am a nazi. Just a typo.

that is funny, but an odd typo -- with 3 wrong letters.

nick said...

The story from the BBC.

laura k said...

Could have been an auto-correct, I get those all the time. But that's what proofreading is for!

nick said...

I've got to leave in about 45 minutes. I'm trusting it will at least be tied up by then.

allan said...

Why?

Not throwing on SB makes it worse somehow. Tek saving his arm?

nick said...

what was that "why?" for.

I think it's a cumulative thing. Tek's next throw on an SB attempt with reach 2nd twice as fast.

allan said...

why do you think the sox will tie this game? ... :>)

laura k said...

I knew that's what why meant. :/

Nick, your link went to the BBC home page but I found the story. Yeesh. I have to wonder if someone let it through on purpose.

nick said...

same rationale as the SB thing. Conservation of runs. Why get put 'em up spattered here and there? I'm looking at a 10-run 6th here.

That and you gotta like something. What else would I like if I didn't like runs. Sure do like runs.

allan said...

Runs are good. Much gooder than getting thrown out at second and looking like a stupid fuckup.

nick said...

argh.

laura k said...

Conflicting edits, and now I can't delete the extra post... Allan, if you're bored, feel free to clean up.

allan said...

there is a good example of a player "trying to do too much". we are not down 1 in the 9th, we are down 4 in the 5th. you don't do that shit.

nick said...

I checked the link and it went straight through for me. Vortex.

must be where all the sox runs went. Maybe they've already been scored and will suddenly pop out of the wormhole and onto the board...like Bill and Ted with Hermione's time turner or something.

Kinda sux.
News from the LL front is not as bad. We've won 3 straight after dropping our first game. Yay!
Yesterday I referred to my SS as Laser Larry after 2 smoking line drives in a row over the shortstop's head. He said "Laser?". I said - "yeah, that's we call Dustin Pedroia on the blogsite I follow, because he shoots laser shots around the stadium. Either that or F...., um, uh, nevermind. Nice hit kid!"."

Amy said...

John, I live with one. Well, he is leering or obnoxious. Just quietly gloating.

And SoSock, it's over. We lost. 7-1.

laura k said...

I see the thread picked up after I left. I won't take it personally.

laura k said...

maybe the pink hats will jump off the bandwagon and regular fans will be able to afford tickets again

So after a whole bunch of losses in a row, they lower ticket prices? Cool!

PS This "pink hat" thing that I keep hearing seems sexist to me. I'm pretty sure men don't wear pink baseball caps - but plenty of bandwagoners are male. Not saying gojohn meant to be sexist, I've heard this from lots of people. Funny how the "bad" fans are wearing pink.

laura k said...

Only mid-April at that.

I hate all the losing - who doesn't - but I'm not worried either. I'm amazed that people actually worry this early.

Indeed. I wonder at the vehemence of the hatred some have towards new fans and bandwagoners (not necessarily the same thing). Would they rather be fans of perpetual losers, so all the fans could be "pure"?

Yeah I agree. there are always different degree of fans in everything , wheter it is sports, music , or restaurants.....I love the Red Sox and consider myself a huge fan , but can't remeber every pitch of the'04 playoff series', some here can. Does that make them a better fan? I like U2 , but have friends who are goo goo gaa gaa over them. Some people have lives that don't give them the time they need to become a huge fan .

And for the Pink Hats comment from ,from gojohn. They are not the reason the "regular" fans cant get tickets...and who exactly are the Pink Hats are they like Teabaggers?

laura k said...

9Casey, you're so smart (especially when you agree with me ;) ).

But it's true about everything, there are all levels of fan-ness. When I used to watch women's college basketball, I would really only pay attention during the playoffs. I used to think I wasn't "entitled" to claim a team or get into it, because I wasn't all-out like I am about baseball. Allan told me this was ridiculous - and he was right.

The people who scoff at the "pinkhats" may have other interests that they're less than fanatical about.

Amy said...

9C, I did laugh out loud at your confession about not remembering every pitch of the 04 Series! If my loyalty or affection for the team depended on how many details or players or statistics I can remember about any season, I would long ago have been booed off the blog (and some probably DO feel that way).

A fan is a fan is a fan. I was once a Met fan, Laura was once a you-know-who fan. Times change, loyalties change, teams change, players change. Big deal.

laura k said...

(and some probably DO feel that way).

They'd better not!!! :)

A fan is a fan is a fan. I was once a Met fan, Laura was once a you-know-who fan.

I also find it weird how people belittle other people for being fans of a certain team. "Nyah nyah, your team's a bunch of losers!" So you want me to give up on the team because they're losing...? Would that improve my standing with you? If anything, cheering for a losing team should earn respect.

When I was a you-know-what fan, and certain people (NOT Allan) would rag on me for that, I would say, I grew up in New York, and this is the team that I went to see and watched on TV. What am I supposed to do, pick a random team to root for? It's my team, what am I supposed to do?

I understand hating the team, hating the uniform. But I do not understand hating fans.

9casey said...

L-girl said...

I agree with you , again.....
Without yankee fans my exsistence as a Red Sock fan would have no meaning....I have said it before my best friends are yankee fans, my best man is a yankee fan. I know Allan is not a big fan of yankee fans commenting at times when they step over the line he blocks them, but i believe last season there was one who respectful ,and some got on him pretty quick. In my opinion it is fun to converse with someone not on your side, shit, what would MSNBC do without Fox.

laura k said...

Allan always allows NYY commenters here as long as they're polite. Inevitably they stop being polite and get banned.

I don't allow right-wing comments on my blog, because I don't want my blog to be a war zone, and because it's my space, for people and views I respect. You say Fox and MSNBC - but those are two separate places. There are plenty of right-wing blogs - they don't need my blog to sound off.

Some people like listening to people scream at each other. I don't. And when NYY fans come around, that's usually where it's headed.

allan said...

I know Allan is not a big fan of yankee fans commenting at times when they step over the line he blocks them

The main problem is that they cannot remain civil. They flip out eventually; maybe a week, maybe 6 months, but it *always* happens. And when I ban them, then the real nasty shit comes out, stuff they were struggling to hold inside before.

i believe last season there was one who respectful ,and some got on him pretty quick

I think I know who you are talking about and he got a LOT of rope and still hung himself. Then of course he flew totally off the handle. And by the way still tries to comment with the usual childish trash talk.

In my opinion it is fun to converse with someone not on your side, shit, what would MSNBC do without Fox.

They'd put out the same right-wing propaganda they do now! They are on the same side, they are ALL on the same side!

The problem with MFY fans commenting is they are unable to understand that practically no one here wants to discuss NYY minutia. And so it never works out long-term.

Fortunately, there are a few other places out there where fans of opposing teams can get into it with each other!

Amy said...

I understand hating the team, hating the uniform. But I do not understand hating fans.

Yah, obviously that would NOT work for me!

laura k said...

I was going to say that, but I didn't want to appear argumentative (thought I should just reply to 9C's point). So thank you for doing that for me! :)

laura k said...

I think I know who you are talking about and he got a LOT of rope and still hung himself.

I don't know if this one followed the same pattern, but they often try to kiss up to Allan while singling me out for hatred. All the time swearing they are being respectful and have done nothing wrong.

Then of course it's your blog sucks and no one reads it anyway...

This is such an old pattern we see it coming a mile away.

9casey said...

I think that might have been taken in different way then I thought it would.

You 2 now better than anybody on this blog, that in the beginning I didn't always agree with your point of views , but they did open my closed mind to a different side. And that has helped me in my life to be more tolerant of others and their opnions.

To get caught up with my statement about the yankee fans on this blog, I believe was taken the wrong way.. In my life , on a daily basis, the bickering we do with each other is all done in fun , it is baseball we are talking about , just a break from real life for a little bit....I never saw the banned comments , so I can't comment on them either way, I use your judgement for that , and trust that judgement.

I am assuming the ! is telling me "if you don't like it here, then......"

I hope that is not the case.......but if is, then it is..

and by using the Fox and MSNBC comparison, I wasn't going for a political viewpoint, more just that they compete against each other and are very vocal about it. I could of used the Joker and Batman to get the same effect, but I didn't...

To think I was trying to be compative in any way would be wrong..I think you both know that I am not that deep.....

allan said...

Totally not the case at all. I'm just saying there are lots of places for all types of discourse. Some bloggers revel in the rock-'em-sock-'em arguments, but not me. Other places frown on swearing. JoS says fuck that shit.
