Beckett: Pawtucket's Sunday Starter

Josh Beckett, who has been on the disabled list with back problems since mid-May, will start for Pawtucket on Sunday against Syracuse (roughly 80 pitches).

Wow, that was fast. I thought they'd have him throw 40 or 50 at a bunch of A ballers or something. Hopefully he's back soon.

In the "kinda cool" dept. - Whit Merrifield, the hero of the College World Series who had the game and title winning hit against UCLA, was at our complex tonight talking to the 12 year olds on our All-Star team. He just signed with the Royals, who took him in the 8th round. He worked with the kids in the batting cage a while, signed hats for them all, then showed off a few of his own swings. My 16-18 year olds were practicing on the field beside the cages, and you could tell they knew he was there. There was definitely a little extra showboating on some of the balls to the outfielders and nobody used a cut-off man. They were gunning every throw all the way in. Several of them also stopped by on their way into the dugout to congratulate him.
