G94: Athletics 5, Red Sox 4 (10)

Red Sox - 130 000 000 0 - 4 12 0
Athletics - 004 000 000 1 - 5 6 1
Good news: Jonathan Papelbon will be available for tomorrow's f*#@%in' game.

Why? Because he sat on his ass in the bullpen while Terry Francona decided to let Ramon Ramirez, Dustin Richardson*, and Michael Bowden hand-deliver this game to the A's.

* Richardson struck out the one guy he faced, so he should not be saddled with too much blame, but Tito did go to him. (Papelbon was warming up in the top of the ninth.)

Ramirez struck out Coco Crisp to start the 10th (and Ococ was tossed by Hey Look At Me!! Good God I'm Such A Raging Asshole home plate umpire Bob Davidson. Daric Barton singled to center and took second on a balk (which Davidson seemed to take particular delight in calling). The Sox decided to walk Kurt Suzuki and bring in Richardson for Jack Cust. RH-hitting Adam Rosales pinch-hit and fanned on strike four (what should have been strike three was called ball three by Davidson, and an understandably irate John Farrell was ejected).

Bowden came in and got two quick strikes on Kevin Kouzmanoff. Things looked good, but then he missed with two balls before Kouz singled to right field. J.D. Drew's throw was up the first base line and Barton scored the winning run.

The Sox blew an early 4-0 lead as Wakefield (6-3-4-2-5, a season-high 115) melted down in the third -- with one out: double, walk, double steal, HBP, 2-run double, run-scoring passed ball, sac fly to tie the game -- and then, while Wake, Manny Delcarmen, and Hideki Okajima were retiring 16 consecutive Oakland batters from the third to the eighth, Boston left the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the other innings -- 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th -- they could not get even one runner past first base.

The Yankees lost to the Angels 10-2 and the Rays lost a wild one to the Orioles, 11-10 in 13 innings. The song remains the same: Boston 6 GB and Tampa Bay 2.5 GB.
Example
Tim Wakefield / Dallas Braden
Scutaro, SS McDonald, LF Ortiz, DH Youkilis, 1B Beltre, 3B Drew, RF Cameron, CF Hall, 2B Cash, C
Jed Lowrie might be activated tomorrow.

Cafardo says the Red Sox had discussed bringing back Nick Green (who was DFA'd by the Jays) back.

At 7 PM:
Rays/Orioles
Angels/Yankees
Example
July 20:

1965 - Mel Stottlemyre of the Yankees hits an inside-the-park grand slam off Boston's Bill Monbouquette, the first pitcher to hit one since Pittsburgh's Deacon Phillippe in 1910.

1984 - Trailing 3-1 after eight innings, the Blue Jays score 11 times in the top of the ninth and then hang on to beat Seattle 12-7.

1985 - !

2006 - The Oneonta Tigers (New York-Penn League) beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 6-1 in 26 innings.
OT - 000 100 000 000 000 000 000 000 05 - 6
BC - 100 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 00 - 1

I had a blast at the A's game last night. Tense throughout, and unbelievable how Dice-K kept mowing them down. Lots of Red Sox fans, as usual.

My three friends from the Bar all flaked out, which was obviously their loss. A guy in his 60's was sitting in one of their seats when I got there. He was wearing a cape that said "Emperor of Red Sox Nation" and was passing out little packs of baseball cards he had assembled to kids, complete with bubble gum. A lot of people at the park seemed to recognize him. When he's able, he goes to all the Sox games on the West Coast. He said he moved to California from Fall River 50 years ago.

I think he was featured in crowd shots. He was definitely in the recap of the game on local TV, though I was out of the room when he was shown. I probably wasn't in those shots, however, because he roamed for most of the game.

The park seemed friendlier and less crowded than other times I can remember. But, God, the size of the foul territory really takes you far from the action. 20 rows up from the RF line and I felt like I was so far away. There's a reason parks are built for baseball only. Who knows where the A's will end up (or the 49er's for that matter.)

I'm going again tomorrow and have a nice seat next to me that's free if anyone in the area can come.

Carl Crawford comes out of the game in the first for the Rays. Not sure what the deal is.

Zenslinger said...

After a 1-2-3 first inning, Matt Garza has given up 1-2-3 home runs in a row to Baltimore (Luke Scott, Ty Wiggington, Adam Jones)!

In other wacky news, PIT scored 9 against the Brewers on 7 hits, 3 errors, and a BB. Alvarez grand slam were the only earned runs.

Colorado with 5 in so far in the 3rd with no outs vs. the Marlins.

Fur also flying in the Toilet.

Jeez.

Allan, do you like my (temp) avatar? It's in your honor.

Zen, I was about to compliment you on your avatar when your comment came through.

Great you were at the game last night! We saw Mr Emperor in his cape on TV. A's announcers said, Isn't the Emperor of RSN Jerry Remy?"

I remember that about the Colesium. Strange place, although the fans were great when we were there - both diehard and very friendly.

In case anyone is wondering what we did tonight (re wmtc post), sangria and tapas at a local place. 10:00 start makes it easy.

Zen, my friend can't come to the game with us on Weds. She can only make weekend games. I have one other idea. It's a long shot, but I'll try it.

Can't wait to chow down on some gametime artichoke. I grossly underestimated the cooking time of these massive beauties, so they're just getting done now (dinner was over an hour ago).

I have to get up early tomorrow a.m. I pretty much have to give up on this game.

And tomorrow I have to leave the house right when the game is starting!

Whine whine whine. I hate missing so much baseball.

RedSoxDiehard said...

I'm OK for these night games, but I'll miss the afternoon start tomorrow, and there's one next week too. Coming so close to the All-Star break when we just went 3 days without a real game, it is pretty hard having to miss games again so soon.

This is why I love my DVR!

Patrick said...

Is Mike Cameron really hitting .282? It feels like he hasn't contributed offensively at all.

Am I alone here?

RedSoxDiehard said...

LOL @ Heidi with a scarf on. It's 60 degrees in Oakland right now. Seriously, a scarf?

allan said...

as far as missing games, jos will be very quiet for 10 games beginning next monday. we are in california for a wedding and some time in SF and yosemite.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Oh, Bogar...

Well that ended up working out!

allan said...

we saw a game at candlestick in mid-august back in 1988 - frozen our fuckin' asses off. twain was right.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Wait, first no baseball, then no JOS? What's a girl to do?

But have a great time on your trip!

allan said...

nearly killed the rally but did not - whew!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Congrats on the 25-year anniversary of meeting! Sorry I am missing you next week.

Seems like Braden doesn't have it tonight. Go Sox!

RedSoxDiehard said...

I froze at one game in Atlanta in April one year. My parents were down from Maine for the week, so of course it was the coldest week of the month. I didn't like coffee at the time but had to drink some to keep warm - we went looking for hot chocolate, but found out they don't sell any.

tim said...

I just about lost my shit last night watching this while in bed, fading in and out of sleep. After Tito came to yank ramram I slumberly thought "oh good, here comes pap" then was wide awake when fucking Richardson came in.

But he did fine. Once again, as Tito was coming put to get Richardson I thought "finally! Bot!" then, fucking bowden? U serious Tito? Saving bot to save a game that won't have a save opp? That's good.

Playoff assassin needs to kick in, like now.
