Red Sox - 000 002 000 - 2 6 0 Rays - 032 002 00x - 7 9 0Lackey put the Sox in a hole - surrendering a three-run homer to John Jaso in the second and giving up three singles and two walks after quickly getting the first two outs in the third - and then left after three innings (3-5-5-3-2, 69) because of a left calf contusion (Jaso hit a line drive off his leg, a play on which Lackey got the final out of the third). They shoot horses for that, don't they?
Davis (9-6-2-0-8, 114) went the distance for the Rays, who are now 5.5 GB Boston in the Wild Card race. In the sixth, Josh Reddick singled and took third on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's double to left. Jacoby Ellsbury singled in Reddick and Salty scored on Marco Scutaro's sac fly. Boston trailed by two, but Tampa quickly got those runs back, courtesy of three doubles off Scott Atchison.
The Yankees lost their third straight game, as the Angels scored a run in the bottom of the ninth and won 2-1. In the three losses - including two extra-inning games against Baltimore - Mariano Rivera did not pitch at all. Boston remains 2.5 GB.

Hot: David Ortiz is hitting .458/.536/.855 (1.392 OPS) since August 7 (22 games).
Not: In his last five games, Dustin Pedroia is 1-for-23. "I've been swinging the bat like shit for five games." Or maybe for seven games; he is 3-for-30 over the last week.
Tim Wakefield will make his eighth attempt to win his 200th game next Tuesday against the Blue Jays at Fenway.
And Yankees/Angels at 10 PM. ... Since 1919, a team has lost three extra-inning games in a row 11 times. The 2011 Yankees could join that group tonight. The 2000 Red Sox are one of the 11, as are the 1964 Yankees (who did it to begin the season).
