That Drew Guy

Heaping unjustified criticism on a player before he actually is a member of the Red Sox is not exactly a new hobby of the Boston media.

Early January 2003. WBZ's Sports Final:
Shaughnessy said they had better not sign that "Ortiz guy", as "he is a sack of you know what".

It's amazing how these reporters just make up shit with no viable source . I am beginning to believe the worst for this Buster Olney...He hasn't been right in 2 years......Is there some way along with all the other blogs and red sox chat areas we can form some kind of revolt and just get these guys to wait and print the truth......I know I sound ridiculous..hey maybe I can get a job with espn or the globe...I can lie and type stupid shit with the best of 'em...Just thought I rant!

Congrats by the way, what did you get for winning?

He had the scoop on the Sox winning the Dice-K bid.

Nothing. Except that cool ribbon gif.

I don't like Drew, and it's based on years of watching him play. He flat out dogs it. He has Jose Canseco's ego, and puts up Jose Guillen numbers.

John:

I know nothing about Drew's ego, but to compare Drew to Guillen is grossly unfair.

Career
Guillen: .272/.321/.445
JD Drew: .286/.393/.512

Drew beats Guillen by 14 points of BA, 72 points of OBP and 67 points of SLG. (If Drew dogs it, Guillen must be in a coma.)

Career OPS+: Drew 133, Guillen 98.

Sorry, these two players are not comparable.

(Drew's best player comp, according to Baseball-Reference? Trot Nixon.)

Runs Created per 27 Outs (career):

Drew: 7.25
Guillen: 4.83

Drew is a vastly superior hitter, despite what your eyes are telling you.

Yaz dogged it for years after he won the triple crown, and then something snapped in his head and he realized, "This is no way to play baseball." Even ballplayers can change.

I listend to Rob Dibble and Kevin Kennedy on XM...why I don't know. Dibble is stunningly stupid and opinionated; Kennedy is just wrong about 90% of the time, and both seem to think they are God's gift to baseball commentary. Anyway, KK was knocking JD Drew (while saying "this is no knock on JD, who I like") and said he would rather see the Sox resign Trot Nixon to a long-term deal. You know, because intensity and a dirty cap and a great work ethic trumps what you actually DO on the field. At least I suppose this was his "logic." What else could account for a statement like that?

Funny: while that last post was being written, Redsock's comparison between Trot and Drew came up...not that I believe for a second that KK was aware of the statistical comp. Besides, Trots stats show a declining player; he's older than Drew, and spends as much time on the disabled list. Kennedy's comment is still dumb, in my opinion.

Vernon Wells was the 3rd best Drew comp.

KK is as dumb as dirt (and I apologize to all the mounds of dirt who might be reading this).

Geez. Talk about Dumb and Dumber, and mounds of dirt. Just think how many people in North America get their baseball info from these guys. It's positively frightening.

I gotta feel sorry for a guy who's coming to a new baseball home with this kind of advance press.

No, but we can stop reading and listening to them. I've done it, and I'm here to tell you, it's liberating!

Congrats by the way, what did you get for winning?

Killjoy. ;-)

If this is verifiable, it's really worth publicizing. It could get a lot of play online.

Does SOSH know? The other big Sox blogs?

SI is reporting this deal done at 5/$70m pending a physical.
