Redsox.com:
How rare was it to see the Red Sox arrive to Fenway Park on Saturday with a 10-game lead in the American League East? It marked the largest margin the Red Sox have had this early in the season in club history. The pennant-winning Sox of 1946 held a 10-game edge on June 11.
Jeff Goldberg, Courant:
[It's]the first time in the 38-year history of the [AL East] a team has had a lead that large after 40 games. ... It is only the third time a team has led by at least 10 games this early. The 2001 Mariners led the AL West by 10 after 35 games and the 1977 Dodgers led by 10.5 games after 26 and by 11 after 40.

Mets lead the Yankees 3-1 after one inning at Shea.

allan said...

Ooop - just checked. Mets now 3-2 as NYY has scored in the top of the 2nd -- Canoe HR -- still batting.

allan said...

Wright homers again!

6-2 Mets in the 3rd. Vizcaino now in for MFY.

allan said...

Canoe has also made two errors already.

allan said...

NYY starter Darrell Rasner left the Mets game earlier when a batted ball fractured his right index finger.

RHP Tyler Clippard may make make his MLB debut against the Mets on Sunday. If he does, he'll be the 11th starter the Yankees have used this year.

Last year, the Sox used 14 starters.

s1c said...

Wrights 2nd home run was off of Myers and Damon had it go off of his glove. Sweeeeeeeeet!!!

Benjamin said...

The Yanks are snakebit this year. And by "snake", I mean the fellow traveler swirling around the toilet bowl with them heading down the drain.

allan said...

They're cursed, I tell you! Cursed!!!

Jackie said...

Yeah, Wright "homers" - the ball bounced off Damon's glove and over the fence! And not off the tip of the mitt either, it bounced off the palm before he could close the glove around it. It was a thing of beauty.

Oh, schadenfreude.

allan said...

Can the next one go off his head?

s1c said...

And the hits just keep on coming. Delgado doubles to make it 7 to 2 and the Spankees pull the infeild in with Delgado on 2nd and Beltran on 3rd. 1 out. SWEEEEEEEET

allan said...

Mets score in the 4th -- they've scored in every inning so far. 7-2.

(I sure wish the old George was still around. Gettin' slapped around by the Mets while the Red Sox are 10.5 GA ... man, that would be epic!)

allan said...

Yeah, that's right. BBI Wright, load 'em up for Green. Still 1 out.

allan said...

FC from Green, 8-2.

allan said...

I may need to turn MLBTV back on for this.

(I can't believe there has been zero work at my job today. Zeee-row!)

Jackie said...

Can the next one go off his head?

I would love nothing more than to see Damon Canseco the ball into the bleachers.

laura k said...

I like that, Canseco as a noun.

I can't cheer for the Mets. My Mets loathing is just in there too deep. I'll just wait for the Yankees to lose and be happy when it's over.

allan said...

Glavine gets Noodle, CI and Shemp 1-2-3 in the top of the 5th. Mets 8-2.

Slappy:

April: .355/.415/.882
May : .242/.356/.323

April: 106 PA, 14 HR, 34 RBI
May : 73 PA, 1 HR, 5 RBI

More Slappy - OPS by Game score:

Within 1 R: .928
Within 2 R: .983
Within 3 R: 1.019
Within 4 R: 1.037

The closer the game, the worse he hits.

allan said...

Mets turn their 3rd DP in 6 innings.

Jackie said...

Aw, that was close. No Canseco this time. Just a missed catch-turned-ground rule double.

Benjamin said...

"To Canseco" a ball over the wall is a great verb, like bicycling a soccer ball into the net. But doesn't "to canseco" already mean injecting steroids into your teammate's ass?

allan said...

Can we have two verbs?

to Jose
and
to Canseco

Jackie said...

"To Canseco" can mean many things, depending on context. It's a magical verb.

From the globe: Lowell and lefties
By Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff
From the Maniacal One...

"Mike Lowell is now 11 for 19 (.579) with a double, 2 home runs, and 7 RBI against lefthanders at Fenway. He is 3 for 19 (.158) against lefties on the road."

allan said...

B2B HR from Slappy and Dumbo.

8-5 Mets in the 8th. Get those 6 outs!!

s1c said...

it is pouring at shea, maybe they will call it for rain and wipe out the b2b's? One can always hope right?

allan said...

8-6, 2 on for CI. 4 outs to go.

allan said...

How the hell is Posada hitting .382?

s1c said...

1st and 3rd two outs and CI grounds out. Love it, 3 outs to go!!!

allan said...

Tangible!

Jeter makes the third out (5-3). Mr. Clutch strikes again.

s1c said...

Base hit will now by Franco will salt this away. 2nd and 3rd 2 outs bottom of eight.

And cano makes his third error. 10-5 Sweeeeeet!!!

Jackie said...

Oh lord, that was hilarious. Cano tries a desperate throw to 1B, only to have the ball HIT OFF HIS FOOT and bounce into right field. This is beyond comical.

allan said...

This is beyond comical.

Robbie being Robbie.

10-7, 2 on, 2 outs with Phelps as the tying run.

s1c said...

1 out to go but the tying run at the plate in the form of Phelps.

Perfect timing!!!

We are drinking on:

"gets the bad news"
and
"full bore"

9casey said...

Do you think they moved Wake up more for the fact they don't want Belli going Back to Back games?

laura k said...

We are drinking on:

"gets the bad news"
and
"full bore"

Always gotta have three, so I'll add:

"tardy on the cut"

and I'll go get a glass!

allan said...

Maybe he wanted Wake against the Yankees. Tito could have jiggled Tek and Belly around if he wanted to avoid that, couldn't he?

allan said...

He's already used a 'struck well".

If you said "framed by x", you better get a bigger bottle.

BTW, Has Remy toned down his pimping of his website during games?

laura k said...

He's already used a 'struck well".

And a "carved foul".

If you said "framed by x", you better get a bigger bottle.

Hey, you're at work. What are you drinking?

BTW, Has Remy toned down his pimping of his website during games?

I think so - way down. I bet it was a word from management.

allan said...

Nothing. Just had some tea, though.

I'll make up for it during the NYY series. :>)

laura k said...

I'll make up for it during the NYY series.

Don would call that a no-doubter.

Joe Grav said...

struck well, again

Joe Grav said...

2-oh. I guess Hansack's fraud 'no-hitter' really was a joke . ;)

laura k said...

Late on the cut? Come on, Don! That's tardy!

allan said...

"late on the cut"

WTF, Don???

laura k said...

He's been doing that lately. Maybe we have to change our phrase. Or else, god knows, we won't have enough to drink. ;-)

allan said...

I wish the times on the comments had fractions of a second also. I'll bet it was real close.

laura k said...

I'm not even watching at the computer. I had to come in to type it.

(I think there is an option that has seconds.)

allan said...

I guess Hansack's fraud 'no-hitter' really was a joke

Well, it was the Orioles, but ... don't be dissing the Sac!

(That games was in the rain also.)

allan said...

Now you know the delay I am on.

I jumped up and typed as soon as he said it.

Joe Grav said...

ahh that's right, Hansack's a mudder

allan said...

Worked on the nickname glossary between games. It's coming ... eventually.

allan said...

He loves the slop.

allan said...

Kramer: Oh yeah, it's all set. They got the bug boy on him.

Guy: The bug boy.

Kramer: Yeah, the little father has run his hard out. They're gonna break his maiden.

Guy: Really? But, it's a little bit slow out there it rained last night.

Kramer: Oh, this baby loves the slop, loves it, eats it up. Eats the slop. Born in the slop. His father was a mudda'.

Guy: His father was a mudda'?

Kramer: His mother was a mudda'.

Sox need some hits.

Time for the jinx:

Smoltz is throwing a one hitter

Smoltz is throwing a one hitter

Smoltz is throwing a one hitter

laura k said...

That's a superstition we can all get behind.

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

Darnit. Didn't work.

allan said...

Had some work to do!!! Back now.

(Not due until tomorrow; will proofread it after the game.)

allan said...

So Tito yanked the Sac!

allan said...

Grumble.

laura k said...

Nice work, SFRSF. It worked, just not right away.

laura k said...

Renteria: Why can't we get players like that?

laura k said...

So Tito yanked the Sac!

*squick*

allan said...

Just saw the replay of Hansack getting hit by the liner.

Ahhh, way to go, Jo-El. 8-0.

This game isn't as much fun.

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

What happened??? I go away for a few minutes and it's 8-zip!!!!

Egads!!

laura k said...

Did you hear Don snort?

laura k said...

I go away for a few minutes and it's 8-zip!!!!

Stop going away, would ya?

No, this game is not as much fun. I predict tomorrow's game will be more fun.

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

No, no fun. boo hoo.

More hits needed. More jinx needed:

Smoltz is throwing a two hitter

Smoltz is throwing a two hitter

Smoltz is throwing a two hitter

laura k said...

I'll try chanting.

Come-back!

Come-back!

Come-back!

[Don & Jerry: rain or mist?]

laura k said...

Am I hearing things?? The musical montage is REM's "Driver 8"!

allan said...

I missed it. That must have been weird to hear.

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

11-0. Good grief.

allan said...

Driver 11 now.

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

okay - here goes the combined cheer and jinx:

Smoltz is pitching a two hitter

Come-back!

Smoltz is pitching a two hitter

Come-back!

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

YEAH!!! It worked!!!!

laura k said...

I gotta hand it to that crowd, the ones who are still there. 11-0 and it's been raining for hours. I wouldn't still be there. (Sacrilege, I know, but I hate being out in rain.)

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

yeah, I'm with you. I've lived in CA long enough now that I'm a weather wimp.

allan said...

It's looks absolutely miserable there. But they'll be happy at the 12-run comeback!

allan said...

ATL 9th: Kelly Johnson is up 3rd -- and needs a single for the cycle. He started the night 0-for-2!

1st: F8

7th: Triple, 2 RBI
9th: ???

laura k said...

Kelly Johnson is up 3rd -- and needs a single for the cycle.

Yeah, I saw that. Of course, as soon as someone hits a triple, I'm thinking cycle.

Sean O said...

I like you guys. Even when we fight.

Oh well, a split today, one great game to enjoy.

See y'all tomorrow for the rubber game.

laura k said...

That's sweet. :)

Hope you had a good night at the show & dinner. Hasta mañana.

I don't think I've ever seen a game with a cycle.

At Fenway Hudson is 1 - 4 with a 7.92 ERA in his career.

Varitek is 7/19 with 3 doubles, 1 homer, 3 walks and 7 k's.
Ortiz is 8/28 with 3 doubles, 1 Homer, 1 walk and 9 k's.
Manny is 8/29 with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 3 walks and 7 k's.
