McCarthy shut us down in '05, then we routinely decimated him last year in relief.

Poor Brandon. As a flyball pitcher at the Cell, he must've been thrilled to hear he was traded. Then Ken Williams told him Texas, and he reverted to the fetal position.

One good theory for Matsuzaka's early control issues was his attempt to avoid homers at all cost, and so he nibbled too much. If there's any place, including Coors, where this will be challenged it's Arlington.

Damn McCarthyism.

Damn McCarthyism.

That has to be the quote of the day sir!!!!

As for McCarthy, he has been pretty good this month (4 starts), almost as good as Daisuke in his last 3 starts. Should be an interesting game.

Tim, have you no decency? :)

allan said...

I always thought the Rangers quit exhuming McCarthy.

tim said...

just saw the lineup, dont see why its not:

Lugo
Pedroia
Tiz
Manny
Youk
Lowell
Varitek
Drew
Crisp

idea behind it:
-leadoff hitter gets on so #2 hitter bunts him up (if i was in the NL i would want my pitcher in the #2 hole)
-youk is red hot, so he should be in the 5 hole
-drew is struggling so he should be dropped to #8 till he finds his swing

Jere said...

Best Propagandhi line ever: "By the way I stole this riff..."

Tim, the fact that you've used the words "punk" and "oi" had me suspecting you were some kind of punk rocker.... nice.

No one got the REM line, I guess.

...

MLB.com:

Roger Clemens will make a third and likely final Minor League start as he works toward duty in the Yankees rotation, tuning up on Monday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. ...

Following the start on Monday, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner would have his fifth day align for Saturday against the Red Sox, a start that is presently lined up for Mike Mussina.

Because the Yankees have their top three starters -- Chien-Ming Wang, Mussina and Andy Pettitte -- set to pitch against the American League East-leading Red Sox, manager Joe Torre said it remains possible that Clemens could miss the Boston series entirely and make his debut against the White Sox in Chicago. ...

"[Clemens is] a guy who understands the process," Cashman said.

********

I think Cashman was misquoted.

"Clemens is a coward."

There.

I wish I had saved the link but I'm sure that about 10 days ago one of the white, bearded, middle-aged sportswriters in the Toronto Star predicted that Fat Billy would avoid Boston because "that's what he does", or words to that effect. FB did not win over that demographic during his stay in TO.

I thought Dallas-Ft. Worth was in the arid badlands.

Globe at 8:15:

Game is a long way from starting
By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
ARLINGTON, Tx - Well looks like a long night at the ballyard. The Rangers just announced this game won't start anytime before 8:30 p.m. central time. The current band of showers is expected to be around for at least the next hour. At that point they'll make another evaluation of the situation.

thatdietcokegirl said...

*huff* it better start. it just better.

5-2 Angels! DeSalvo doesn't have it....

2nd and 3rd no out.

Jere said...

Vizcaino walks in a run. 6-2, still loaded.

Jere said...

Fucking Hillenbrand double play, end of inning

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

Damon drops it!

9-3 Angels!!!!

allan said...

Looks like Sox will start around 10, though it is still raining a bit in Texas.

Looks like Clippard's number may not be retired after all.

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

Noodle arm can't get Vlad out. 10-3 Angels!

allan said...

10-3. MFY fans must be loving this.

We shouldn't bitch about Lugo/Crisp at 1-2. Figgins (.133/.189/.187 in 75 AB) is leading off the Angels.

Sean O said...

I NEED BASEBALL GODDAMMIT

The only good that Texas ever served in its corrupt, hollow existence was that they could have baseball games without any freaking rain. What the hell is this?

allan said...

Let's go SheAAA!

allan said...

Bah. Send Seabiscuit to the glue factory.

Jackie said...

apropos of nothing: Anyone else INCREDIBLY amused that the Phillies fan in the Dick's Sporting Goods commercial (that's played during every MLB.tv break) who says "it's about friendship" is filmed a)from a distance, and b)alone?

allan said...

you get commercials during breaks? all i get is the baseball pac-man screen or the pong screen.

a few years ago, mlb would sometimes forget to switch off the feed between innings and i would sit there PRAYING that don and jerry would say something off color.

but they were careful, i guess. i remember jerry saying someone's bag of chinese food smelled like shit -- i think was as risque as it got.

thatdietcokegirl said...

ok underway. whew. i was getting sick of watching boogie nights..

thatdietcokegirl said...

doh!

allan said...

dice walks lofton (after no walks in his last 2 starts) and serves up a nice single to young.

then gets a 6U-3 DP. let's get sosa.

allan said...

cano gets a 3-run double with 1 out in the bottom of the 8th.

ana up 10-6. c'mon angels.

Jere said...

mlb.tv doesn't have commercials--except for the Dick's Sporting Goods one.

Jere said...

10-6 after 8. Finish them, Angels. Was anyone else pissed at Dice for walking Lofton, then giving up an 0-2 hit? But he did his usual, allowing runners but getting out of it...

Jere said...

Whoops--I see you covered the bottom of the first.

Loaded, no out! Come on, Cap'n!

allan said...

Walking in Texas ...

Manny: bbbcfb
Drew: bcbbb
Lowell: bfbbb

allan said...

Walking, Texas Ranger?

allan said...

my pop cuture references are almost as old as chb's.

tek sac fly to lofton; 1-0.

allan said...

walk to coco; 4 walks but he still has a NO HITTER!!!!

thatdietcokegirl said...

ooh.

thatdietcokegirl said...

;D!

allan said...

Pedroia!! 2-run single to rcf on McCarthy's 37th pitch of the inning. 3-0.

allan said...

sosa making wily mo look like willie mays.

Jere said...

Crowd fooled Orsillo.

Yanks lost.

9casey said...

Watching on gameday how did Pderoia get thrown out?

allan said...

4 runs, 1 hit.

McCarthy's pitches: 19-46 = 65

FINAL: LAA 10, MFY 6.

thatdietcokegirl said...

^^he does that alot lately.

Sean O said...

theeee yankees lose.

Holy crap, McCarthy went Ankiel there for a moment.

9casey said...

gameday is also showing Youks ball over the fence?

allan said...

Bottom of 9th for NYY:

CI called out on strikes.
Shemp called out on strikes.
Slappy out 6-3.

allan said...

Lugo popped down the RF line, Sosa came in and dropped the ball. Then threw to SS at second for the force.

9casey said...

Thanks..so it was boneheaded on Ped's part?

allan said...

Not at all. Easy pop for Sosa, Pedroia has to stay by first.

But it clanked off Sammy's iron glove. Pedroia had no chance.

Jackie said...

not boneheaded - it was basically an infield fly type situation, but down the RF line so the rule was not in effect.

redsock - I've been getting a couple different "commercial" breaks this year. For a while it was just the Pacman (same game every time, I noticed) and then recently I've started getting the Dick's commercial and then Pong. Tonight I'm just getting Pong, except for the first couple breaks. I do love when they forget to cut away or are late on the cut, though... Don and Jerry chatting "off the record" is fantastic.

allan said...

and sosa had to come in a bit, it wasn't very deep.

allan said...

pitching change for rangers: wes littleton.

McCarthy's line: 2-1-4-4-1, 66 pitches to 11 batters.

thatdietcokegirl said...

fucking a. dice-k leaving the game. why??

9casey said...

OK , Thank You

Sean O said...

what the fuck is going on?

Jere said...

On the closeup of Sosa, you could see he dropped it, it landed right near him, he picked it up, looked in toward the infield and paused, like he had all day to get the ball to second. In other words, Pedroia had no chance. Nothing he could do.

allan said...

Flo: "Shift THIS!"

Jere said...

There was another "commercial break" on mlb.tv--the different hazy scenes of ballparks. May have only been preseason. But yeah, the Pac-Man thing ad pong and that shelf are all stupid...

And I have heard secret Remy talking a few times. I love that they let that stuff get by.

Nice job, Papi and Manny!

allan said...

FSN showed him walking slowly to the dugout, right hand on his hip the whole way, head down.

WTF are you hearing? I'm muted.

thatdietcokegirl said...

they just said he's going to the clubhouse, but noone is warming..so..i dunno.

allan said...

aw, fuckin a, manny.

you weren't going to third anyway.

Jackie said...

*THAT* was a bonehead move. Manny!

allan said...

i think they showed dice on the bench, getting dirt cleaned out of his spikes.

allan said...

All four East teams lost tonight.

thatdietcokegirl said...

yeah he's coming back in. dunno wth that was about. maybe he had to go to the loo ;)

Jere said...

Oh, I didn't mean I'm hearing Remy stuff tonight. The mlb.tv stuff I heard was from before I moved to Boston. I still use it for Yanks. But I'm, uh, using someone else's, so it's not like I'm paying for it....

thatdietcokegirl said...

ah, he's wincing a little off the mound tho.

allan said...

Dice seems okay!

Three innings, 45 pitches. Or 1 fewer than McCarthy threw in the second inning.

Jere said...

DO and RemCanine are saying Dice is sick to his stomach.

Jere said...

Horrible camerawork by NESN as usual.

Jere said...

I feel like the whole team just walked into a poppy field.

thatdietcokegirl said...

c'mon dice! someone get him some alka-seltzer? thx.

allan said...

Glad it's not his arm.

thatdietcokegirl said...

shit.

allan said...

phooey.

Jere said...

Tito, he's sick. Do something. I hope sean isn't watching this game.

And has Dice ever got to a ball hit back up the middle? No, because he doesn't follow through, hence doesn't end up in fielding position.

thatdietcokegirl said...

what is this mother's day. wth are you doing rangers? D;

Jackie said...

okay, NOW can we pull him? :( Poor guy.

thatdietcokegirl said...

i hate this guy's delivery.

Jere said...

Second and third, none out before. No runs. I never know how I last through 162 of these every year.

thatdietcokegirl said...

the game is still ours.

Jere said...

Barrett for Youk.

thatdietcokegirl said...

whooo! fair ball. ties game.

Jere said...

Tie. Thank you poppy. I mean Papi.

Jere said...

Now that I've got you all here--doesn't Teixeira look like Anthony Keidis, singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Sean O said...

Matsuzaka obviously sick, and Francona both lets him start, and lets him continue. What is the sense in that?

thatdietcokegirl said...

yeahh!!!6-5! wow that was a weird kick off the pitcher..

Jere said...

Thank you second base bag. And Manny. Ahhhh, the lead again.

Jere said...

Maybe Drew will get motivated on Monday when he sees the home crowd cheering WAY more for the visiting right fielder than for him.

allan said...

Leaving work at midnight. Home at 12:30. At this rate, I'll see the last 3 innings at home.

Sean O said...

Jere, wouldn't you like to make $15m a year to play at replacement level and still get "mental health days"? That would be excellent.

Jere said...

The one good thing Drew has done is get off to a good start to avoid the relentless booing he'd be getting by now if he'd started the year playing the way he is now... but that will catch up with him if he doesn't et his ass in gear--soon.

Jere said...

Thank you, Corky McBigHead.

Jere said...

Note to anyone sitting in right field in Texas the next few days--bring a major league baseball to the park and mark it with a black S.

Jere said...

The rent-a-cop is in play! Woohoo!

thatdietcokegirl said...

nice, 2 runs in :) 8-5

Jere said...

Nice hustle by Coco to get a double out of a grounder to second, and nice sac by Dustin.

Jere said...

Fly out makes it 9-5, Lugo.

Jere said...

I'll take a solid single to right, too! Nice! 9-5, what a way to make a whatever.

Jere said...

Another crazy walking lead SB for Lugo. Now a single makes it 10-5....

Jere said...

There it is. 10-5. Bigger lead than we had before. I was never worried:)

thatdietcokegirl said...

me either ;)

Sean O said...

What a messed up game.

Apropos of nothing. Frankie Francisco was a monster in MVP 2005, and was always available for a marginal AAA prospect. Easiest way to replace Timlin, who... kinda sucked.

Jere said...

This is a crazy game. This is the type of game that leads people to use the word "microcosm."

Jere said...

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Jere said...

Did you hear the already injured Phil Hughes rolled an ankle? The curse of the "RIP Red Sox 2006 Season" gravestone t-shirts continuuuuues.

thatdietcokegirl said...

poor jd. damn..

Jere said...

Where the hell is Jesus, JD?

Sean O said...

"...he's a mascot."

I love DO and Jerry.

Jackie said...

jere, thanks for reminding me, I meant to post this earlier - The Frontal Cortex had a fun post today about the Yankees and the "Winner's Curse" (note: not an actual curse) that I enjoyed. Interestingly, this phenomenon is also mentioned on a site titled Joy of Economics. Weird. :)

Jere said...

The Yanks shouldn't feel so bad--they're only 7.5 back in the wild card, with five teams ahead of them.

Jere said...

Redsock was spot on with that "seeing the last three innings starting at 12:30 ET" thing.

Do any more of our pitchers wanna walk Lofton? Terrible job...

Jere said...

Come on Tanya Donnely.

Jere said...

Teixeira? Keidis? Anyone?

Jere said...

If Lowell keeps the glove on Lofton, he may be out, as he slipped off the bag, and the ump was looking closely.

Jere said...

You walk Lofton, he scores. Terrible.

thatdietcokegirl said...

love tanya donelly.

Jere said...

Kristin Hersh is better! Should we get out our swords again?

MattySox said...

I can't believe I missed the first six innings, an AK lookalike and a Propaghandi conversation...anything else I need to know?

MattySox said...

And a Belly ref...unbelieveable...ps. saw up tonya Donnelly's skirt at the old 9:30 club in DC in '95, and man, that chick hates underwear...

MattySox said...

Ps. RKO just led back from commercial with "Nearly Lost You" by the Screaming Trees. Has there ever been a better fat-guy front man than Mark Lanegan?

Jere said...

Nice job, Lowell.

Jere said...

Oh, yeah, they love that song--and so do I. What a voice on that Lannegan.

Tey also played Gift by Sugar recently--two innings in a row!

Jere said...

Sosa's lookin' up at 600 like matty at a Belly show.

MattySox said...

"Gift" was the first song I ever crowd surfed to...or was it "Gee Angel"? One of the two for sure...either way, "More or Less" by Screaming Trees is my ultimate "having sex with your ex so you'll be depressed for a week afterwards" song...and nice catch, Lowell...

Jere said...

Nice job, Mighty Oak-a-Jeemer.

MattySox said...

Yeah, he's saying, "Damn, how do I get that?"

Jere said...

Matty, just so you know, you're missing a Foxwoods commercial.

MattySox said...

If I miss a Marty's RV comm, then let me know, they're the only ones I really miss...Lincoln Mercury of Raynam!

Jere said...

The 600 club has a mandatory underwear rule, though.

Jere said...

Haven't seen Marty's in a good while. Or the classic LM of R. But, I think that one's only in the southern NESN territory. I mainly get Foxwoods, and Subaru--feel the freedom! And of course, Empiire. Today! Although not today, ironically.

MattySox said...

I love how Castig just described Eric Gagne as "That French-Canadian from Montreal..." Nice to hear an announcer put the sort of necessary disdain on those words that they deserve outside of the NHL...

Jere said...

JD Drew--trying to become the first man to have a negative batting average.

Jere said...

I was gonna say, Don't piss off the Canadians, on this blog. But I guess Montreal is like, the "other" Canada or whatever.

MattySox said...

Two things...first, I like that the whole world is turning against JD- predicted it a long time ago...second, I think the Feed the tree coochy talk scared everyone else away...maybe even Allen...

Jere said...

Allan.

I think I scared 'em away before you came by.....

Jere said...

Take your hat off, boy, when you're talkin' to Allan....

Jere said...

I really hated that tune.

San Francisco Red Sox Fan said...

Nope, I'm still here. I ain't scared.

JD Drew--trying to become the first man to have a negative batting average.

very funny. Love it.

MattySox said...

Well, you know, baby's playing dead in the cellar...

Jere said...

I'd like to see both the Sox and the anti-Yanks win 10-6 tonight.

Jere said...

The Smear in for the ninth?

MattySox said...

Brother Pap, lead us in the closing hymn...

MattySox said...

Wow...no afghan wigs fans, despite the fact the the other Lanegan is playing in the Twilight Singers now...

Jere said...

High heat. He's on tonight.

MattySox said...

Thought I just tied all the post nirvana seattle talk together with that...

Jere said...

Dice gets a weird win.

MattySox said...

RKO just said that New England/Boston has become a "great country music area"...

Jackie said...

And that's the ballgame, kids.

Local time 10:27pm... thank god I live on the West Coast!

Jere said...

TJ by RKO. That dude from Afghan Whigs hosted 120 with Donal Logue one night. That's about all I know about that band.

Jere said...

Good night Jackie! Good night Matty! Good night Jonboy!

Jere said...

Good night, Sean. Good night, Allan. Good night dietcokegirl. Good night, San Fran.

allan said...

W!

I drive home, Sox are busy scoring 4 runs. I walked in as Lopez came in, so yeah ... I saw 3 innings + one batter.

Has there ever been a better fat-guy front man than Mark Lanegan?

D. Boon.

And who the F is playing Sugar??? Man, Copper Blue and Beaster are fuckin' great. Love Bob Mould. NDR and Flip Your Wig -- youth in VT!

Anyway, this was kind of like spring training for the west coast games. Last out at 1:25 Sock Time.

10.5 on the MFY, 11 on Tor, 11.5 on Bal, and 13 on TB.

laura k said...

And who the F is playing Sugar???

Me, of course. All the time.
