G48: Red Sox 7, Rangers 4

Wakefield (7-5-4-1-4, 91) was solid outside of a rough fifth, Manny went 4-for-4 (falling a home run shy of the cycle), Drew walked three times, and Youkilis doubled and singled to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

AL East Lead:

11

The Red Sox Train rolls on.

***

Tim Wakefield (3.14, 141 ERA+) / Vicente Padilla (5.52, 82 ERA+)

Scary dude:

David Ortiz is 4-for-10 against Padilla -- two doubles, two home runs, two walks and no strikeouts.

Daisuke Matsuzaka:
I felt very good coming out of my warmup in the bullpen. ... But all of a sudden, I didn't feel too well. I tried my best to take the team as deep into the game as possible. I regret that I ended up being a burden to my teammates today.
The Globe's Amalie Benjamin wrote that Matsuzaka "was seen dry-heaving in the concourse [and] felt the onset of nausea in the second inning".

Has anyone ever seen a ballplayer get sick on the field? Players have had fevers, been drilled in the groin, swallowed their chaws -- yet I've never seen it. ... How cool would it be to have Dice strike out the side, while vomiting between batters!

OPS+: Manny Ramirez (98) isn't that much better than Dustin Pedroia (93). Yikes. ... Tops on the team: Ortiz (172), Youkilis (152), and Lowell (150). (Cora's at 141.)

This afternoon:
LAA - 300 000 000 - 3 6 1
MFY - 000 100 000 - 1 8 0
11 GA!

i just had a brilliant idea for charity...theres all these different charities red sox players are doing (schilling pitching for ALS et al), if i had money i would donate money to charity for something like every inning the yankees DONT score in, or every strikeout a yankee gets. that way the better they do, the sicker the children get. it's brilliant.

(or sadistic, either way...its not in the "spirit of the game")

Jeter homers.

"Why does the Yankee captain want children to die?"

I like it.

11 games back in the Loss Column. 18 weeks left. Closer and closer to that division title. Loving it, we just need the other teams in the division to move up so that the season ends with us saying the Last Place NY Yankees.

redsock said...

True. They are only 2 games out of the cellar.

BOS --
TOR 11
NYY 11
BAL 11.5
TAB 13

While the Sox are clearly the class of the East, there is such parity among the other four teams.

From todays Press Pass for this game:

► Boston has been in 1st place through 47 games 7 times in the last 9 years (beginning 1999)…The previous biggest lead in that period was 2.0 GA in 2006.

► Boston has scored a total of 26 runs while Wakefield has been in the game in his last 14 starts overall beginning July 17, 2006, an average of 1.9 runs per game…22 of those runs have come in his last 8 starts.

AFTER 47 GAMES: At 32-15, the Sox have their best record after 47 games since 2002 at 32-15 (33-15 after 48 games)…It marks just the 6th time in team history that Boston has won at least 32 of its 1st 47 games:
Year After 47 Games After 48 Games
1904 32-15 32-16
1946 38-9 39-9
1978 32-15 33-15
1986 32-15 33-15
2002 32-15 33-15
2007 32-15 ---

The only true angst in those years is 1978.

Glorious.

Missed the game last night, hopefully will catch some of tonight's at the ol' coffee pub. I really need to get some work done so I don't get turfed from my program @ school.

Last night in Cincinnati!!

Pit: 020 000 000 8 - 10
Cin: 000 002 000 2 - 4

ugh, the #2 hitter should NOT be the hottest on the team.

I could have sworn I saw some angst in 1986. Coulda sworn.

No rain delays tonight, I hope? I missed most of last night's, I want to watch this one.

L-girl said...

In other news, my Petition To End Interleague Play has not gotten any traction yet. Only a couple of blogs have picked it up, and only a small number of people have signed so far.

It needs wider play, but I don't want to make promoting it my new full-time job.

L-girl said...

Whoa, that Pitts/Cincy linescore! Very cool. Woulda been cooler if Cincinnati came back to tie, but still.

L-girl said...

Weathers?? Is that David Weathers? He's still pitching? Well, trying to, anyway.

redsock said...

ugh, the #2 hitter should NOT be the hottest on the team.

when i ran some optimal lineups at baseball musings before the season started, the lineup that scored the most runs had manny at #2.

redsock said...

Yup. Good ol' Corky.

While it is true that 1986 did produce some Angst (Hey Rojah, hows that finger). That angst was in the WS.

1978 and 2002 were the only times they didn't get to the WS. Though in 2002 I really don't think anybody felt that the Sox at this point in the season were a World Series Caliber team. I know I thought they were a good team, but I felt then that the Yankees were a better team.

Lets just get this team to the Series.

redsock said...

Just saw the Dick's commercial. Extremely annoying.

L-girl said...

Hey, Corky was a better actor than Weathers is a pitcher.

Re 1986, ok. Agreed re 2002.

I am totally focused on winning the division. I can't visualize anything after that.

L-girl said...

Padilla is from Nicaragua, too? Let's see if Don mentions Hansack.

Shit anydody can do that and not win the sereis

And also you are really against interleague play are you also against the wildcard?

JD 1 time

L-girl said...

If anyone can do it, then the Red Sox should do it already!

Of course I don't want them to win *only* the division. I just want them to win the division and the Yankees not make the playoffs so badly. Everything else after that will be gravy.

And also you are really against interleague play are you also against the wildcard?

Nope. The wildcard definitely adds excitement to the penannt races. And without it there'd have been no 2004.

It's not ideal, I'd like to see a different system, but I think it's been a good thing for the sport.

Nice triple Manny!

redsock said...

MANNY - a triple, complete with a huge belly flop slide into the bag.

And he scores standing up on a wild pitch. Tied again!!!

L-girl said...

That's what I love about this team. You can't make a mistake against them. They'll take it and kill you with it.

L-girl said...

Yeah, huge belly flop, and he could've just gone in standing!

redsock said...

I am against interleague, the wild card and the DH.

redsock said...

That's it for "Puh-dear".

s1c said...

Crisp and Mirabelli 0 for 8 against Benoit. So Washington is going with the numbers, here.

redsock said...

Coco: "Number this!"

redsock said...

Texas gets 3 in the 5th. Sox come storming back to take the lead with at least 3 of their own.

6 of the first 7 guys get on base -- the one who didn't (Tiz) hit the ball 399 feet to dead center.

L-girl said...

A buffet of runs?? Oh, Jerry.

Puh-dear. :)

s1c said...

The hottest hitter on the team comes up to bat with the bases loaded. I like our chances.

L-girl said...

You could also drink to Don's stopwatch. How long a wait has it been...?

L-girl said...

With this sucky Texas pitching, I really like our chances. Come on Yook.

s1c said...

11 men come up to the plate, and with that walk its off to work I go. Heigh, ho!

redsock said...

I'm in the mood for some Ortiz salami.

redsock said...

Bah.

redsock said...

Manny's gotta hit a HR now -- for the cycle.

L-girl said...

How bout a cycle from Manny?? As soon as someone hits a triple, I'm thinking cycle.

L-girl said...

Hey, you beat me by 1 min.

L-girl said...

I had to get up and come over to the computer.

redsock said...

Manny has also walked, so he could get the Cycle+.

redsock said...

Man, could that Yankee fan in the Dick's commercial be more of an asshole?

It's about doing

what it takes

to win.

Hey, Jersey boy, looked at the standings lately?

9casey said...

How do you have a .231 avg and still be able to have 29 rbi's.

And out of the leadoff spot

redsock said...

Jays up 7-2 in Minnesota, but the Twins get 2 in the bottom of the 8th and 3 in the bottom of the 9th to tie it.

Jays score 1 in the top of the 11th -- and so do the Twins.

8-8 in the 12th.

Jackie said...

yeah, I don't understand how Lugo is leading the team in RBIs (as of yesterday anyway).

Still think the lone Philly guy is the highlight of that commercial. "It's about friendship." Which is why I'm all by myself... I guess...

redsock said...

How? Lots of guys on base.

Lugo has 29 RBI, but Tiz has 38 and Lowell has 37.

redsock said...

Lugo this year:

Empty: 217/286/313
Men on: 265/307/412
RISP: 319/333/468
Loaded: 500/566/875

Loaded (4-for-8, 8 RBI)

redsock said...

Manny up second in the inning -- let's crank one!!!

redsock said...

"Oats-grrr."

tim said...

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww not tonight. ah well, 11.5 will be awesome.

*literally knocked on wood there*

redsock said...

Line single to center.

Manny: 4-for-4, 2B, 3B, BB, RBI, RS.

L-girl said...

So Tito hates cell phones interrupting his meetings! Good man. I like him even more now.

L-girl said...

No cycle, but Manny is hitting now. That's the best.

No, let me correct that.

ELEVEN AND A HALF GAME LEAD

That's the best!

redsock said...

BOT.

that says a lot for 7-8-9

If Drew can somehow wake up or tell the world he's is actually hurt. The offense would improve greatly.

These guys all have to learn to waste pitches on 0-2 or I'll have a heart attack before Labor Day. 11.5!!!!!!!

tim said...

alrite boys and girls, chalk it up....11.5 game lead.

dammit MLB with your blackout restrictions - im in the jays region (aka all of canada) so i cant tune into that on MLBTV

Screw that not when you throw 95 mph.....

and Papelbon's walk total is high this year....

redsock said...

can't have a heart attack when you're 11 games up, can you?

redsock said...

Jays win in 13, so:

BOS --
TOR 11
BAL 11.5
NYY 11.5
TB 13.5

Jere said...

9casey: With the tying run at the plate, two outs in the ninth, 0-2, you don't throw a pitch the guy can (and did) hit to the deepest part of the park. He could've used the 95 MPH to get the guy to chase one in his eyes.

And yes, it would be hearrt attack, but the kind you can easily get over the next day. Like Chris Farley as a "Superfan." ("Just a minor heart attack, I'm okay.) I'm just sayin', not wasting an 0-2 is a pet peeve of mine, especially when it could potentially cost us a game we worked so hard to win, no matter how far ahead we are in the standings (unless the division is clinched at the time....).

he most likely meant to...like i said his control hasn't been fantastic this year .....We can agree to disagree.

And Farley died from a "heart attack" didn't he....

^^^the important part.

and also:

when i ran some optimal lineups at baseball musings before the season started, the lineup that scored the most runs had manny at #2.

interesting, my theory's always been that the leadoff man is supposed to get on so the #2 man can bunt him over into scoring position...

Jere said...

"Hey, Jersey boy, looked at the standings lately?"

Seriously. When I first saw that commercial, I imagined the director going "Cut! Uh, you got anything else, guy?"

And then the fan thought for five minutes and said "1918?"

s1c said...

The best thing about NESN is Sox in two, so I can not watch this game all over again (well the exciting parts).

11 game lead but more importantly MFY are only 2 games from the bottom of the division. Come on Tampa, I really want to say to th FIL, the last place New York Yankees!!!!!

Sean said...

jere, for the record, i'm with you here. For whatever that's worth.

Note to Francona: Keep Dice-K away from the enchiladas.

There are many things wrong with this sentence, but I'll just pick on one. ;-)

There is no "scoring position" in baseball. You can score from any base, including home plate.

p.s. 11.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jere said...

Sean--on the commercial, or on "waste a pitch"? I hope it's the latter, as I know I'm right on this one. This is 30 years of Baseball School talking...

(last line: parody of Groundhog Day when Rita says "this is 12 years of Catholic School talking," or whatever)

you know what i meant ;-)

jeeze, tough crowd.

redsock said...

It's not you.

The phrase just bugs the shit out of me(us), though I do use it. (Maybe I should try to stop.)

RISP has 8 syllables. "Runners on second and third" has 7 ("RO23"?). In addition to being quicker to say, it's more accurate. "Runners on second and/or third" has 8.

Language should be precise.

And baseball should not adopt the language of others sports: defense (it's fielding!), no-doubles defense (fuck you, McCarver!), etc. I've also heard Remy say another team is "punting". Grrrrr.

L-girl said...

Hey Tim, I'm sorry about that, I totally didn't mean to pick on you. It's a pet peeve, as Allan explained.

I also don't agree that the #2 man should necessarily be bunting, but that's another story. :)

L-girl said...

Damn right you should stop! Or else never talk to me again about the DH or the wild card.

(Which really wouldn't be so bad...)
