G2: Athletics 5, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 001 000 - 1 5 0
Athletics - 013 000 01x - 5 9 1
Harden (6-3-1-3-9, 95) was tough to hit and Lester (4-5-4-3-4, 83) was tough to watch. Emil Brown atoned for his base-running blunder yesterday by smacking a three-run dong to left in the third. Manny hit a solo shot with two outs in the sixth. Other hits: two singles from Lowell, a single from Lugo and a double from Crisp. David Aardsma pitched 1.2 innings (1 H, 3 K) and looked very good.

156 hours and change until the next regular season pitch.

***

Jon Lester (2007 ERA+ 104) / Rich Harden (2007 ERA+ 171 (25.2 IP))

Red Sox Athletics

Dustin Pedroia, 2B Travis Buck, RF
Kevin Youkilis, 1B Mark Ellis, 2B

Brandon Moss, RF Bobby Crosby, SS
Jason Varitek, C Jack Hannahan, 3B

Francona said Lyndon's back is okay, Coco was going to play today regardless. Drew's back is no worse, but the team is playing it safe, since they have a 10-hour flight to California coming up.

Also, SoSH TaLK on Yook's cut-off in the 10th inning of Game 1.

Also, from Benjamin: "Josh Beckett had his best side day of the spring, according to a conversation John Farrell had with the pitcher. The best case scenario has Beckett pitching in Toronto, during the three-game series April 4-6."

Good morning!

Jack Marshall said...

Hey! ESPN 2 is coming in fine and clear! In an ironic twist, however, I woke up blind. But it's a good morning on JOS, nonetheless....

Joe Grav said...

Let's get it on!

Jere said...

"...put your little hand in mine..."

allan said...

After 2 minutes of Thorne/Phillips, you'll wish you were deaf, too.

Jack Marshall said...

I refuse to let anything spoil a day that begins with a Red Sox game. Even Gary Thorne. Play ball!

laura k said...

I agree. But that's what mute is for.

I'm loving these early games. Watch a game and still have the whole day in front of me - plus a free evening. Perfect.

Jere said...

oh my. the Sullivan Tire ads continue their greatness, acting-wise, with Pedroia and Rice in the new ones. I think they've found in Dustin possibly the world's only actor worse than Tito.

Jere said...

"Watch a game and still have the whole day in front of me - plus a free evening. Perfect."

That is very true, for night guy, but morning guy's the one who has to get up early, and he's pissed about that.

Jack Marshall said...

Playing Crisp is a good idea, I think (he said, risking Laura's wrath). We shall see.

Rob said...

good morning.

i'm much more tired this morning than i was yesterday morning. but, i'll persevere.

Joe Grav said...

gnasty start for Harden

laura k said...

It's easier for me. I don't have a night guy.

laura k said...

"Playing Crisp is a good idea, I think (he said, risking Laura's wrath). We shall see."

Hhrrrmmmm... /marge simpson

Joe Grav said...

the damn crowd Troops me every time

Joe Grav said...

I'm also much more tired today. It was all adrenaline yesterday--- plus, this is the 2nd straight day of short sleep :(

allan said...

flo now 6-6 against harden, 4 hits, 2 bb.

Jere said...

The younger crowd has no idea how happy it makes Castiglione that "Trup" is synonymous with "thinking a ball is gone when it's nowhere near.": Growing up with Coleman and the "new guy," Joe Castiglione, we used to call that "getting Castiglioned."

Which I guess now would be spelled Castigli-Pwned or whatever.

Joe Grav said...

damn, Harden just says 'sit down'

Joe Grav said...

c/\$^!g/1pwn3d

laura k said...

Well, I'm an old fart, and I still call it getting Truped. But I guess I'm a youngster in Red Sox terms.

Jere said...

ok, the newer crowd, then.

Yeah, it was always, "long drive to left! But the wind holds it up and he traaacks it dowwwn..." for Joe.

Joe Grav said...

good play.

Rob said...

uncle joe described that as, "a weird ball"

Rob said...

Yeah, it was always, "long drive to left! But the wind holds it up and he traaacks it dowwwn..." for Joe.

he was doing that yesterday. minus wind bit.

Joe Grav said...

is the radar gun still slow?

Jere said...

so it's official. We wore the correct road unis both games, instead of claiming, "Oh, the Japanese people really wanted to see the home whites so we just wet ahead and wore them."

Jack Marshall said...

I wonder if there is ANY plan regarding the 10K that Manny could articulate that these morons wouldn't make fun of. "Im going to put that money into a hedge fund." "That Manny! What IS he thinking!" Maybe if he said, "I'm putting a $10,000 bounty on Gary Thorne's head" they'd shut up.

Joe Grav said...

7 pitches, 2 outs. Not bad.

laura k said...

Jack, I thought the same thing. Gas money, yuk yuk yuk, what a riot. Colour copier, how hilarious.

Jere said...

"he was doing that yesterday. minus wind bit."

Yeah, it's funny, just because it became Trup's trademark to eff that up, doesn't mean Joe ever stopped, ha.

Of course, I consider myself young and the people listen pre-1979 are the fogies, heheh

Joe Grav said...

Manny's just a funny guy.

laura k said...

Not nearly as funny as the mediots make him out to be.

allan said...

i thought they might mention how much gas costs, but they shied away from that.

Rob said...

"what are you going to do with that color copier?"

"i'm going to put it in my house."

Jere said...

glad I've got NESN.

Joe Grav said...

Truped again! 16 pitch inning, way better than usual for Lestah

Rob said...

"swing and there's a fly ball deeeeeeep to right field... but there's brandon moss."

Jere said...

I knew that one was caught. Because I've learned. Long fly ball--probably totally not deep.

allan said...

mlb has not yet put up a gameday link on its scorebard page -- someone oversleep?

Jere said...

Did anyone get Castigli-owned/Truped on Ellsbury's ball after Moss's dong yesterday? Well, I guess anyone listening did. Castig was sure we were taking the lead.

Jere said...

Lowell looking for a 10-game OD hitting streak. Pretty....pretty..pretty good

Joe Grav said...

here's the new hero

Jere said...

"someone oversleep?"

Has Selig ever woken up in the first place?

Rob said...

gas prices in japan are around the same as what lord lynch would pay for petrol. at least, from what i gather.

most of the global listings are not quite up to date.

Joe Grav said...

Nice heater. This could be a good outing for Harden.

Rob said...

oof. tough K for moss.

laura k said...

"gas prices in japan are around the same as what lord lynch would pay for petrol. at least, from what i gather."

way more than what we pay in north america

allan said...

nah steve ... no numbers in baseball.

Joe Grav said...

nasty

Jere said...

SASWOAL

laura k said...

i think thorne & phillips just found out there is a world beyond the us. the way they're laughing about kilograms and sushi, it's embarrassing.

Jere said...

Please tell me Phillips was at least imitating Chevy Chase's Gerald Ford....

Jere said...

Rem's new line: "As President of Red Sox Nation 'I Want You'...." to buy stuff, etc.

The President doesn't say I Want You. That's Troy, New York's Uncle Sam's job....

Rob said...

way more than what we pay in north america

the average is about £1.10 per litre. so that'd be about $2.20 per litre. both US and canadian.

Joe Grav said...

Lugo's smooth.

Rob said...

i wonder when the last time ESPN went to toronto.

Joe Grav said...

That was a hard-hit ball.

Joe Grav said...

I need a nap

laura k said...

Toronto, good question. But they don't seem to realize they're out of the US when they're in Canada.

laura k said...

You'd think that no one in Japan ate anything but sushi. Ever.

bennymac said...

are thorne and phillips flirting?

Joe Grav said...

L-girl: you mean they don't?

Jere said...

Much Lester cancer talk on ESPN?

laura k said...

Well I couldn't swear to it, but I'll assume they don't. :)

Sushi, this "exotic" food... that is sold in every shopping mall food court in America.

laura k said...

Cancer talk for the intro, so far it hasn't come back. We were saying, poor Lester, he'll forever be described that way.

Joe Grav said...

Yeah. I'm not a big fan of sushi. It seems like every night is sushi night around here

Jere said...

Gotta get Kathleen hannahan

Joe Grav said...

....those crazy college kids and their 'exotic food' tastes

Rob said...

"it was 0 and 2. now it's 3 and 2."

i was hoping for that to happen less this year.

but now the count is 3 and 3.

Morning All! What'd I miss?

laura k said...

I could live on sushi.

Joe Grav said...

Man, sometimes these game threads turn into remy/orsillo type banter... except not everyone who watches the game is forced to listen :-p

Jere said...

I know, he beat cancer, but only the disease. The talk appears to be chronic.

Joe Grav said...

I'm just not a seafood person really, which is a shame, since it's generally so healthy. I've tried to acquire a taste for it, it just hasn't happened.

laura k said...

"except not everyone who watches the game is forced to listen"

exactly. we're not supposed to be calling the game.

Joe Grav said...

this inning is far more... Lesteriffic

OMG the Bruins won yesterday. Where's that guy from yesterday's thread?

laura k said...

"I know, he beat cancer, but only the disease. The talk appears to be chronic."

Heh, very good.

"I'm just not a seafood person really, which is a shame, since it's generally so healthy."

Console yourself thinking of all the mercury poisoning you're not getting.

Rob said...

i don't like seafood for the most part. and the seafood is do like doesn't count. fried clam strips. fried shrimp.

bumpy inning.

Joe Grav said...

darn. 1-0 Oakland, Crosby in. Well-placed 2rbi single for Denorfia (who??)

Ron said...

Here is the disappointing thing about sushi, though I could live on it too.

Really high-lights how hard it is to live by your principles I suppose.

laura k said...

bruins guy, that must have been tim. probably still asleep.

Rob said...

OMG the Bruins won yesterday. Where's that guy from yesterday's thread?

i'll bet tim's asleep. but i watched the game and it was absolutely fantastic. with savard and without ferrence.

/bruins talk

laura k said...

Chief, good link. Scary! I thought it was going to be about overfishing of tuna and salmon - which is a *huge* problem. I am struggling with my need for wild salmon... and the need to protect salmon from extinction.

Joe Grav said...

YES. Big pitch Lester.

And, interesting article. Which is why, to me, 'living by your principles' means just trying to be a good person and treat people with respect, fairness and compassion. Outside of that, there's not much in your control.

laura k said...

yeah sushi talk is one thing, but another sport...!! ;-)

Joe Grav said...

Hey, it's between innings, so Bruins talk is temporarily ok right? Injuries have just killed them all year, it was nice to see the young guys step up. I missed the first period, what was wrong with Kobasew? (I went to sleep before looking it up)

laura k said...

Joe Grav, you're right that there's not much in our control, but you can still take action. You can't take action on everything, but "it's out of our control" is also a convenient cop-out.

A big bunch of ppl taking action together can make a very big difference.

Joe Grav said...

OCOC!

SoSock said...

Up and at 'em, Atom Ant!
Missed the Sox' first at-bat, anything?
Someone must have gotten on base anyway.
Harden looks migy damn sharp so far, hope that doesn't keep up

Ron said...

Yeah, who knew?

I grew up on the Oregon coast eating wild salmon every summer. My Grandfather had a small boat and used to bring it in all time. All that is gone now - amazing how commercial fishing has eliminated wild salmon in the Northwest. Little guys can't even get permits for personal use now, from what I understand.

Oh right, baseball....

Rob said...

BB for ortiz

Joe Grav said...

Oh, I understand fully. But the sushi article just goes to show that even when you think you've got things covered, there's another dimension there.

allan said...

maybe geren will cap harden's pc at 50. that would help.

Rob said...

kobasew injured his leg while scrambling in front of the net.

Joe Grav said...

That would be good. Harden is en fuego right now

laura k said...

We're going to Newfoundland this summer, which used to be a 100% fishing economy. Now it is mostly a tourist economy, and only barely that. Almost no fishing at all. Whole towns have disappeared, huge percentage of ppl on public assistance. No more cod.

Joe Grav said...

Come on Dustin, keep up the chase for .400 :D

Joe Grav said...

I love the sound effects.

laura k said...

Joe Grav, yes, you're right. It's just my job to remind people to do activism. :)

laura k said...

Ooo Jere, be glad you don't have espn right now. Very glad.

tim said...

Morning all! Excuse my lateness today but all is good now - coffee is brewin, game is on and we are ready to roll!

Rob said...

i had a dream overnight that i bit my tongue. and i got so angry that i did that. then i woke up, and i had bit my tongue. still hurts.

allan said...

talking about walks and the mfy

thorne says maybe giambi will take walks to get on base for arod. hgh will be batting above arod in the lineup? leadoff or 2nd?

Rob said...

Morning all! Excuse my lateness today but all is good now - coffee is brewin, game is on and we are ready to roll!

did that have anything to do with another boston team last night?

Joe Grav said...

come on Yook, make him work

Joe Grav said...

I remember that my alarm went off at 5:01 in the middle of an awful part of a dream, I hate when that happens. I think that's why I feel like crud now.

Rob said...

lugo, to second: "i'll take that."

Joe Grav said...

Lugo's in to 2nd. First Sox SB of the season.

laura k said...

i wish there was a way to mod the gamethread and still have the game on mute.

Jere said...

Harden's about to face Papi for the second time....

Joe Grav said...

Good time for your first hit, Papi

Rob said...

oakland: we're experiencing some minor turbulence, which very well could result in crashing into a mountain. we'll see.

allan said...

phillips says yook chases the fewest pitches out of the zone.

yesterday he said the exact same thing about cust.

Joe Grav said...

L-girl, learn Spanish and hit SAP. Do you have SAP in Canada? Whenever I'm at home watching with dad I put it on because it drives him nuts.

Joe Grav said...

what a grab :/

Joe Grav said...

hey, no jinx or anything, but Harden has a

NO HITTER

going

Rob said...

i've got the radio and tv on, just so i don't feel i have to be glued to the tv. works well in baseball. not so well in other sports.

Jack Marshall said...

I think Lester looks terrific...great fastball, tough demeanor. For a cancer survivor, of course.

(I endorse your view on proactivity, L-girl. We always have choices; futility is often an illusion. Like, I'm pretty sure these needles I'm sticking in my Gary Thorne voodoo doll now are having some effect...)

laura k said...

My Spanish is good enough to watch a game. But no, in Canada the SAP is French. Plus this is the MLB EI feed, no SAP at all.

Jere said...

Why are we talking about sushi like there's no vegetarian version? I eat the stuff all the time. It's a bunch of rice wrapped in seaweed stuffed with little cucumbers and shit. It's awesome.

Joe Grav said...

I don't know much Spanish, but growing up in Revere, MA, I've picked up enough to have a semi-decent idea of what's going on during a game. I'm pretty good with Spanish soccer commentary now (it helps that 90% of the commentary is: player's name, corner kick, foul, goal)

allan said...

harden pc: 19-15-26 = 60

tim said...

did that have anything to do with another boston team last night?

No, just me being a tool and staying up til like 1:30 am. Just got caught up on the thread...and I'm proud to say that I'm that guy!

Joe Grav said...

ish: Kobasew is one of my favorite pro athletes. He's come back to Boston College (where he won a national title in 2001) a few times to skate with the team and stuff, and I was able to get his autograph. Seems like a good dude.

I've gotten to see some pretty good players like Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin practice here too, because when the Celtics are playing at the Garden, teams visiting the Bruins sometimes practice at BC.

Rob said...

oakland: we just dodged a bullet there. free peanuts for everyone.

laura k said...

I dislike vegetarian sushi. That's why I was.

Thanks, Jack. History is full of examples.

I wish we could have radio too. I would definitely mute this shit.

SoSock said...

When we went to Alaska we stoped at a former fishing and logging village called Hoonah. Former. Commercial fishing had put all but 2 of what usd to be over 80 shipps out of business and logging was cycling down.
They built a cruise ship stop. Wonderful place, but.....

Joe Grav said...

Lester got squeezed there

Jack Marshall said...

For example, that needle in the doll's head: Thorne actually appears to think that either 1) Jose Canseco plays for the Yankees, or 2) Jason Giambi wrote the sequel to "Juiced," or 3) Jason Giami and Jose Canseco are the same person. Even after being corrected by Phillips when he said Giami wrote the book, Thorne said "I can't wait to see those throws from third to first!" and insisted that "the Yankkes can't just let this lie" and had to get "the two" to talk it out. He's really, truly, nuts!!!

Joe Grav said...

I would watch 'the ultimate red sox show' if hazel mae were not the host

Jere said...

There are so many different things you can put in sushi! There's not one version of sushi without a lil' creature in there you like? There's a great soul food sushi place in New Haven. I never had sushi before I became a vegetarian, though, so it's like a new, meatless food for me. Then again, I never liked fish. Except tuna sandwiches.

tim said...

This sushi/fishing convo has way too much intellect for this early in coffees (for me anyway). Man. I do have to say that mango rolls are pretty kickass. Other than that, there isn't much else the veggie way that I enjoy.

PS - Spider Rolls FTW!

Joe Grav said...

Can we pick up the pace here boys? I have class at 10

laura k said...

Sorry. I only like it with sea creatures in it. I've sampled lots of other versions. To me they're just space fillers, not worth eating.

I also dislike Hazel Mae. Unrelated to sushi.

Jere said...

dien bien PHU. Popped Him Up

tim said...

Those of you listening to Thorne on ESPN2, there's no need to spread the poison on here :P

Sheesh, have some respect for those of us lucky enough to not have to listen to the piercing sounds of his voice.

Joe Grav said...

i'm not sure that joke was appropriate, but it was funny

Jack Marshall said...

L-Girl---you ATE Hazel Mae?

Joe Grav said...

Lester's going to have to wriggle out of this jam a la last year

SoSock said...

Does Hazel Mae come wrapped in eel?

laura k said...

No Jack. My mouth has been nowhere near Hazel Mae.

Ron said...

Obviously Thorne is in the Joe Morgan camp with respect to "reading" books.

tim said...

jesus fuck - i go to make a coffee and miss the dong. looks like i'm going into work later today, gotta watch the comeback...

allan said...

there was a sushi place in the east village that had some odd combinations. one had peanut butter in it -- strange but it worked.

damn brown dong.

SoSock said...

SHIT!!
Lester leaving it out there.
But it's OK, because,you know....

Jack Marshall said...

Tim: I apologize. You're right.
Besides, that new book by Jason Giambi is bound to stir things up with the Yankees...

allan said...

i think jose said slappy made a pass at hgh's wife. and alex and the jucier would have to chat.

Jere said...

we should've realized Emil Nomel really wanted to make up for yesterday's blunder and not thrown him anything to hit

Jack Marshall said...

Dam Brown Dong is actually the name of Hazel Mae's cousin.

laura k said...

"And I am going NOWHERE NEAR that Hazel Mae/mouth comment"

no need to be polite

tim said...

damn brown dong.

dirrrrty.

haha no worries jack - no need to apologize, i would be doing the same thing so i can't say shit to you guys. the games where we don't have a choice (FOX) are always fun to communally bash.

allan said...

or maybe the chokers signed canseco this morning and the news isn't out on the wire yet. only thorne knows.

Joe Grav said...

Well, i'm not sure exactly how I would phrase my joke if I would go there, but it be something along the lines of 'everyone would be able to tell if your mouth was ever near Hazel Mae'

laura k said...

Ewwwww.

tim said...

only thorne knows.

sort of like the sock?

Joe Grav said...

Hey, you asked for it

sorta

Joe Grav said...

They are hitting him hard. Here comes the ole' pitching coach

laura k said...

indeed

laura k said...

i was curious what you'd come up with

SoSock said...

Wait, so Canseco shot up Bonds with roids, he screwed Clemens' wife, who passed it to A-rod,and Petite just used it to help the infection go away faster, right?

I can't take anyone seriously whose name is Kurt. Sorry, but thats just the way that it goes.

allan said...

people talk about lester having ace stuff/potential -- i just don't see it.

SoSock said...

Will this inning ever end?

tim said...

is it me or is lester an incredibly slow pitcher?

Joe Grav said...

that was a long inning :-/

laura k said...

not you, it's excruciating

Jack Marshall said...

RedSock: If Thorne doesn't think Canseco is somehow on first for NY or that Giambi wrote the book, what could that comment about "throws from third to first" possibly mean? He's nuts, I tell you.

go! go! go! in a hoverround!

lmao! "I'm Tom Kruise, inventor of the hoverround"

Rob said...

i think i just had the longest yawn in the whole of human history.

Joe Grav said...

Lester is just not a fun pitcher to watch. He's solid, but not fun to watch. Kinda like Matt Clement, but better

tim said...

people put down wakefield for supposedly being slow - when he pitched at skydome last year it seemed fine to me, and was fun to watch. but this lester...man. like molasses on a morning like today.

Joe Grav said...

hopefully the long wait impacts Harden

Rob said...

could be worse. tom werner has just showed up at the nesn booth.

allan said...

i guess thorne thinks the book and the wife claim will cause problems between 1B giambi and 3B arod.

tim said...

SPN2 has Thorne and doofus shit...NESN has Tom Werner, discussing heated toilet seats.

Ron said...

Tom Werner talking about heated toilet seats. That must be a big upgrade over whatever is happening on ESPN2.

Joe Grav said...

...nope, still nasty

Jere said...

Werner says standing room only people are in socks. Remy and Orsillo's response: silence.

Jack Marshall said...

Redsock: I see it. Lester just hasn't learned how to pitch yet. He's a little like John Tudor befor he figured things out.

Joe Grav said...

"oh...that's......interesting"

Joe Grav said...

Harden wow

tim said...

fuck, manny punched out

tim said...

good start.

Jack Marshall said...

Wha? Wakefield works FAST.Really fast. His PITCHES are slow.

Joe Grav said...

laura k said...

yeah, harden is annoying

SoSock said...

I hate slow pitchers. Told my LLers at practice last night that the worst thing they can do is slow the game down. Puts defense to sleep, irritates the umpires, hurts the fan base.
We were covering respect for the game and decorum, one of my favorite pre-season chats every year.
Doc - breaks up the no-no!

Jere said...

Nobody says Wake is slow--except for that one horrible article.

Rob said...

oops. aww. no no hitter for harden.

Jere said...

The only thing slow about Wake is his pitch speed.
