G110: Red Sox 2, Athletics 1 (12)

Athletics - 000 000 010 000 - 1 7 0
Red Sox - 010 000 000 001 - 2 11 2
Jason Bay (#44) scored both runs as the Red Sox win in extras!

Bay - who received a long standing ovation when he came to the plate in the second inning -- reached based in four of his six plate appearances.

He walked and scored in the second, was hit in the back by a pitch in the fourth, struck out in the sixth and eighth, walked in the tenth, and then tripled with two out in the twelfth.

After J.D. Drew was intentionally walked, Jed Lowrie chopped a grounder that Oakland shortstop Bobby Crosby could not make a clean play on and Bay scored the winning run.

Wakefield (6.1-4-0-3-4, 108) was superb and the bullpen was solid.

Tampa Bay beat Detroit 5-2 and Los Angeles shutout New York 1-0, so the Red Sox stay 3 GB and the Yankees fall to 5.5 GB.

Justin Duchscherer (2.37, 165 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (3.94, 112 ERA+)

A wise man once said: "The players come, the players go, we stay."

... and so the Jason Bay era begins.

And it begins against perhaps the best pitcher in baseball. In 16 of his 18 starts, Duchscherer has allowed two or fewer earned runs (on May 24, he threw a 8-1-0-0-4 line at the Red Sox).

Duchscherer leads the major league in ERA, WHIP (0.94, one of only two starters under 1.00), fewest hits allowed per 9 IP (6.96), lowest opponents average (.199) and lowest opponents slugging percentage (.309). He is a close second among MLB starters in lowest opponents on-base percentage (.255, with Dan Haren at .253).

In the six games of this homestand, the Sox are 1-5 with a .240/.303/.375 batting line. In the 12 games since the All-Star Game, they are hitting .241/.330/.360 and have slipped from .5 GA to 3 GB.
          Tampa Boston New York
Last 10: 6- 4 4- 6 6- 4
Last 20: 8-12 9-11 13- 7
Last 30: 17-13 14-16 17-13
Also at 7 PM: Tigers/Rays and Angels/Yankees

I will be at the game tomorrow night, weather permitting. Is Ish here for a forecast?

YES!

Dodging storms, Amy.

Here's why I like (and could love, if I lived out there) the Dodgers.

Their roots are in Brooklyn, like mine.

They play at a beautiful park, one of the nicest I've ever seen.

They have Vin Scully.

They brought in Jackie Robinson.

They are very into their Spanish-speaking and Asian-American fans.

Their fans are great.

They have an ancient rivalry with the Giants, still going on, transplanted from NY to Calif.

(Whispers: I like Joe Torre.)

And now they have Manny.

If I could stay up to watch their games, I'd get hooked.

Amy = 801!

Showers with thunderstorms likely. Patchy fog after midnight. Some thunderstorms may produce small hail and damaging winds and humid. Near steady temperature in the upper 60s. Southeast winds 5 to 10 mph...becoming northeast after midnight. Chance of rain 80 percent.

amy....your one-post update on Bay:

came up for the first AB, long standing O, walked. second AB, got hit by pitch. made a nice sliding catch in the field and got another ovation. struck out in his third at bat...made a decent play off the wall and got a quick throw into 2nd to prevent the runner from advancing, which was followed by another ovation - which seemed like a bit much to me.

and you saw the rest :)

laura k said...

The way the Dodgers are pitching, I may have a long wait for the Manny AB.

laura k said...

Tim, nice :)

I'd like the Dodgers more if their GM wasn't a stumbling, bumbling idiot.

But they've got some damn good young talent. If only they knew how to use them.

Amy said...

Yuck, Ish, not what I want to hear. I hate driving two hours to Boston for a rain out or long delay.

laura k said...

I don't mean the current Dodgers lineup. I just mean the franchise.

tim said...

So is this game on ESPN?

tim said...

I wonder when the eBay jokes will start.

Tony said...

The Dodgers game's on FSN Prime Ticket, so no. West Coast/MLB.TV/satellite only.

Tony said...

Kershaw FINALLY gets out of the 2nd.

Manny up in 2 minutes!

laura k said...

My feed is FSN, Vin.

Oh god, there he is running in from LF. Argh. Horrible.

Tony said...

And now I'd better get my fingers limbered up...I'm gonna have to type FAST.

efd said...

Oh god, there he is running in from LF. Argh. Horrible.

I had the same reaction. It's like Bizarro Manny.

Amy said...

Thanks, Tim! Nice summary.

Just saw the beginning of the thread. Mazel tov to Allan for the link in the Guardian! That's terrific and well-deserved.

laura k said...

Go for it Tony!

tim said...

Puttin on ESPNEWS and hoping they'll switch to it

laura k said...

Here he is. Big standing ovation.

Tony said...

Standing O for Manny...Scully compares it to a Barbra Streisand concert he saw in Vegas. Wow.

laura k said...

They are chanting Man-ny Man-ny.

This hurts.

Patrick said...

In addition to the dodgers love, you can probably get fish tacos in LA. That's a huge bonus in my book.

Tony said...

Pitch 1: grounder to short.

Anti-climactic!

And the fans cheer him anyway. Well, that's nice.

laura k said...

First pitch swinging, and he grounds out 6-3.

Benjamin said...

GDGD has the same picture it's had for the last few years, with a new hat slapped on it. Lazy.

Manny grounds out on the first pitch.

laura k said...

No fish tacos, but there's sushi at the park.

Tony said...

Scully now mentions tonight's Sox game. Put a smile on my face.

laura k said...

That's it for me. Time to eat something and go to sleep.

Nice thread tonight, you guys, thanks.

Tony said...

BTW, it's still very cool that Manny chose #99. Scully breaks out the history to mention that Turk Wendell also wore that number.

So Taguchi has it now. Maybe Manny wanted to be So Money?

I'll show myself out.

efd said...

good night, Laura! Enjoy your meal.

Benjamin said...

4-pitch inning for Johnson. Sad.

Tony said...

I'm out, too. Going to watch this game and weep silently.

Great win tonight!

tim said...

Night L! I'm off to pick up some Bangladeshi food or a pita! Later all, good thread!

Oh, and The Clash sucked!

laura k said...

The Streisand comparison was, she said "I haven't done anything yet" and Manny hasn't done anything yet, getting cheered just for being there.

laura k said...

Modding is coming back on folks. Sorry, the pub is closed for about half an hour.

Amy said...

Good night, all. Pray for fair weather tomorrow night...

laura k said...

G'night all.

Rob said...

I'll post a few pictures of the crash I had on my blog tomorrow, perhaps.

Goodnight everyone.

9casey said...

Nice win , I was locked out allnight, too many people?

Sarah Haendler said...

(Laura, I like Joe Torre too.)

laura k said...

It wasn't too many people - blogger is having problems. I can get in on my laptop but not my desktop! Allan couldn't get in at work.

laura k said...

(Thanks Sarah)

Amy said...

Ish, how are you feeling??

(Another secret Torre fan)
