G112: Red Sox 5, Athletics 2

Athletics - 000 020 000 - 2 5 1
Red Sox - 100 301 00x - 5 8 0
Jed Lowrie tripled in two runs in the fourth, giving the Red Sox the lead for good, as Boston cruised to a win and a sweep of the A's.

Julio Lugo has had three games this season in which he has driven in more than one run. Lowrie also has three -- this month! (Please note today's date!)

Matsuzaka (6-4-2-2-8, 105) still had pitch count problems. He came into the game with an average of 17.6 pitches per inning, 2nd worst in the AL. And today he threw: 17-26-12 16-21-13.

But he worked out of a man-on-third-no-out jam in the second and at one point had retired 10 in a row, seven of those by strikeout. A one-out walk and a Barton homer gave Oakland a brief lead.

Jason Bay singled twice and scored twice. He also fielded a ball off the left field side wall and gunned down Mark Ellis -- the second batter of the game -- at second. So far, this guy has the Midas Touch.

Elsewhere, two wild games:
Tigers - 001 010 011 1 - 5 12 1
Rays - 000 000 130 2 - 6 8 0

Angels - 210 200 040 - 9 11 4
Yankees - 000 013 46x - 14 14 0
We stay 3 GB, New York remains 5.5 GB.

***

4:22 PM: Play ball!

3:44 PM: Rain delay with Sox batting in the bottom for the sixth.

***

Dallas Braden (4.39, 89 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.04, 145 ERA+)

Braden is a 24-year-old LHP who made his debut last April, totalling 14 starts and six relief appearances last year (72.1 IP, 6.72 ERA). However, he did strikeout 55 batters in those 72.1 innings, thanks to a superior changeup.

He began this season with 11 relief appearances before joining the rotation on July 22. On that day, he faced the Yankees (5-4-1-4-1; an 8-1 win) and on July 28 pitched against the Royals (6.2-6-4-2-7; lost 4-2).

Braden has never faced anyone on the Red Sox roster.

In his last outing, Matsuzaka gave up six runs in five innings against the Angels (though he walked only two batters). This is his third start of the season against the A's, but his first since April 1.

Mike Lowell has been playing with a right hip flexor injury for the past five weeks, though he claims it's not the reason for his shitty July.

Here's what I posted about last night's game on the game thread.

Last night's game was so much fun, as you might imagine. Tek with TWO hits, including a double and a couple of RBIs!! And though it wasn't the most exciting game in terms of tension, it was sure a lot of fun to watch all those hits.

We were sitting in Box 91 in the RF---only problem was that to see the batter, I had to stare around the pesky Pesky Pole, which was annoying, especially with people walking up and down the aisles. Why can't people sit STILL? No one gets up and down that much at a movie or a concert.

Anyway, I thought of you all several times. Almost yelled out "Sweaty Dong: TWICE! And when they put LBJ in, I almost yelled LBJ. It was a good seat to watch his back(side). And I was delighted to see that you all remembered I was there to represent JOS---I kept thinking last night, "I bet they are thinking that I am excited to see Tek get those hits." I was.

One negative note: when Bay hit his HR, the crowd started chanting, "Manny Who?" over and over. That made me sad....

Also:
Bartolo Colon will make a rehab start for Pawtucket on Tuesday night.
David Aardsma will pitch for Pawtucket today, 15 days after a right groin strain put him on the DL. How long will Aardsma's rehab be? Tito: "We don't know."

allan said...

One negative note: when Bay hit his HR, the crowd started chanting, "Manny Who?" over and over. That made me sad....

100% disgusting.

Proof that Red Sox fans can be as stupid, petty, unthankful and ignorant as any other team's fans.

allan said...

Ian Browne says it was only "a smattering of Fenway fans" that chanted "Manny who?"

Would you agree with that, Amy?

allan said...

The Mighty Rasner gives up a two-run single to Mrs. Garrett in the top of the first. 2-0 Halos.

Amy said...

Allan, it sounded like far more than a smattering, but perhaps it was mostly people out in the right field area. It only lasted for a few minutes, but it was pretty loud.

I guess if Remy did not pick up on it and comment (as no doubt he would have after his tirade the night before), it was not overwhelmingly loud.

We were sitting near a loud, boorish group of young males who had had quite a bit of beer even before the game, and they were among those chanting. Perhaps that's what made it so loud for me.

Patrick said...

Nice Sunday for listening to a baseball game. It's cloudy here 40minutes north of Fenway, and it just rained.

Seems like it's just passing through.

allan said...

Dear Sox: Don't stop kicking A'ss!

nixon33 said...

"manny who?" chants.
i can assure you some of those grown men & women chanting that were also crying their eyes out at the end of '03.
how quickly we forget.

Patrick said...

O'Brien just said that the A'ss pitcher has flu like symptoms and it was questionable weather he would pitch today.

I like the sound of that.

Feisty thunderstorms headed this way too.

DFA Pedroia. His swing's too big.

Some people were able to evacuate to Canada! Very well done!

Jack Marshall said...

Some of those "Manny Who?" chants may have come from fans who quite reasonably took offense at Edes' report yesterday that Boras-Ramirez essntially attempted to extort the team into giving Manny waht he wanted even at the 11th hour. After all, "do this and Manny will behave" is just the flip side of "if you don't do this, Manny will misbehave." I'm sure this report is discounted in Manny-World, but Edes has proven to be a pretty reliable reporter in the past. It looks like about 90% of the Boston fans regard this as the "smoking gun" of the whole episode, with the remaining 10% keeping faith with the "he was run out of town by the media and front office" myth.

Joe Grav said...

Hey, Look, Bay was watching his HR go out instead of busting it down the line.

Ah, yes. Thanks, Phil.

A little night musing said...

efd!!!

I'm not watching the game (though I could), just following this thread. I'm glad I can't see the signs.

Patrick said...

Where are you, Musing? Out of radio range?

allan said...

Because derision and disgust is more enjoyable for some people than being thankful for two World Series titles?

allan said...

Jack: Honestly, that report sounds too bizarre to be true. And, for what it's sorth -- and it ought to be worth at least as much as the anonymous report -- Boras denied it happened.

Anyway, we cannot trust on the media to be honest in any of its reporting. It has been almost 12 years since Duquette said goodbye to Clemens, and every sportswriter still gets the "twilight" quote.

12 years.

allan said...

Gets the twilight quote *wrong*, I should say.

Either through actual lying or unexcusable ignorance.

allan said...

P.S. I should add that Edes is far better than most and I'll miss him at the Globe.

Dice-K should give up a lead off triple every inning.

Rob said...

Dice-K is one of the most annoying guys to watch pitch.

43 pitches, but still the lead.

Patrick said...

I think Dice-K needs to take up smoking weed.
