G114: Red Sox 8, Royals 2

Red Sox - 100 112 300 - 8 13 0
Royals - 100 000 100 - 2 5 2
Beckett (6.2-4-2-2-7, 90) retired 18 of 20 batters from the first inning through the seventh, Jason Bay went 4-for-5, Dustin Pedroia had two RBI-singles (26 straight road games!), Jacoby Ellsbury had two singles and two stolen bases (his first SBs since July 1), and Jed Lowrie smacked another triple.

Bizarre play: You've probably already seen it. In the seventh, Bay hit a drive to deep left-center. CF Mitch Maier leapt at the wall and the ball hit off the tip of his glove. It then rolled along the top of the wall (towards left field) for 12-15 feet before LF Ross Gload jumped up, swiped the ball off the wall back towards the field, caught it and fired it into the infield. Bay ended up with a double.

Screen shots (the out-of-town scores change after the second picture):

And some advice to the parents of the kid who brought the anti-Manny sign to the park: When your sign refers to a player as stupid, you should make sure all of the words are spelled correctly.

The sign (shown on FSN at the start of the bottom of the ninth, sadly edited out of mlbtv's archived game) read: "Just Manny Bein'n Manny" -- with the second "Manny" crossed out and the word "Stupid" written off to the side.

"Bein'n"?

Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 8-4 and Texas held off New York 8-6. ... Red Sox still 3 GB, Yankees 6.5 GB.

***

Josh Beckett (4.15, 107 ERA+) / Brian Bannister (5.33, 82 ERA+)

I've has this link sitting around for awhile and I'm pretty sure I never posted it.

Seattle Times, April 20, 2008:
Ask [Bannister] how deeply he has delved into statistical analysis, and he says, "Oh, as deep as anybody. I've gone as deep as you could go, so far."

If there's a Web site or book that presents some provocative new way of looking at baseball and its numbers, chances are strong Bannister has checked it out.

"What it has stirred up is really fun," he said. "Because here's a whole group of baseball fans that were kind of outcasts, or ignored, or everyone said they were crazy. The truth is coming out that they have some interesting things to say. If I can bridge that gap a little bit, I'm happy to do that."
SI's Jon Heyman has an article examining the apparent nuts and bolts of last week's trade. (Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also has a few nuggets.

Alex Eisenberg (who runs Baseball Intellect) has an article at The Hardball Times: "Why Jason Bay Makes The Red Sox A Better Team".

Scoreboard Watching: Spiders/Rays at 7 PM and Yankees/Rangers at 8 PM

Jere, you're not suggesting I write about Mikey, are you?

Benjamin said...

Spiders threatening, though.

Tony said...

Yanks put up a run on a Damon triple and Jeter sac fly, so it's 4-1 now.

Jere said...

ALNM, no.

Let's go Cleve-land!

SoSock said...

Evening all

A little night musing said...

Hey, sosock, how goes it?

Jere said...

Yanks only got the one in the 6th

Anonymous said...

Our team OPS drops about 40 points with RISP, which at first glance looked terrible, but it seems in line with other teams, except for the Angels who get about 70 points better!

Jere said...

YOu see that lob throw to first? It's almost like Beckett is TRYING to make the Red Sox--and America--lose!

Okay, I've tapped out my alloted well trips now. Thank you.

Tony said...

Beckett's doing work tonight on the hill. Get him more runs!

Patrick said...

Thanks for keeping this one winnable people. I had to be out of the house for the evening so I wasted 3 hours watching the batman movie.

How's Beckett been doing?

allan said...

one of the kc guys - cannot tell them apart -- says fielding percentage is the worst team stat.

he lays it out simply: just because you make no errors doesn't mean you are good defensively -- maybe you don't get to a lot of balls. and just because you make a lot of errors does not mean you are a bad defensive team.

nice to hear.

but they made a big deal about how long it has been since josh got a W, or how few he has lately, so they have a ways to go ....

Jere said...

5-1 Tex. (Anyone know how Murphy singled in a guy who was on first?)

SoSock said...

So apparently these Red Sox are good at chasing people named Ramirez away ;>

Tony said...

Between innings reading: What Hath God Wrought, the latest in the Oxford History of the US and a very interesting read. The period between the War of 1812 and the Civil War is one I didn't get to read much about in school, and it's nice to fill in that gap in my historical learning. That Andrew Jackson sure did hate Native Americans, huh?

Anonymous said...

Wasted? Batman was pretty good, for a summer blockbuster, I thought.

Jere said...

Wow, "You're not Manny" chant. And he promptly gets a hit.

Benjamin said...

5-1 TEX.

allan said...

beck - 69 thru 5.

Tony said...

jere, Marlon Byrd (or as I called him when he played for the Nationals, Marlon Tyrd) singled, stole 2nd, and scored on the base hit.

Patrick said...

It was the fourth time I've seen it. : )

Jere said...

Well, the "you're not Manny" chant was clearly audible on NESN. Don't know if you caught it on the KC feed.

A little night musing said...

Gagne pitching for Atlanta? When did that happen?

Jere said...

oh, okay, ESPN missed the stolen base. That explains it. Thanks. Tek gets a hit...

I had to be out of the house for the evening so I wasted 3 hours watching the batman movie.

Tony said...

patrick - if you can, go see TDK on IMAX. A stunning experience.

And, for my money, TDK has raised the bar for superhero movies AND summer blockbusters. It's a work of art.

Benjamin said...

Jacoby useful.

Jere said...

My offensive breakout prediction getting closer and closer to coming true.... 4-1 SOX

Patrick said...

Mom & Dad having sex?

AHHH! EARMUFFS!!!

Benjamin said...

The Watchmen will kick its ass, though.

Tony said...

Man, my commenting made me miss a Tek hit? Wow.

Thank you Bellsbury!

Patrick said...

Yeah, most super hero movies are horrible, especially the new ones. TDK has some substance, and no CGI which is nice.

Anonymous said...

For the record, the best movie of the summer so far is Wall-E, and it's not close.

Tony said...

phil...on the fence re: Watchmen. The graphic novel is a masterpiece, but I've always thought it was unfilmable, and having the 300 guy do it doesn't exactly change my mind.

A little night musing said...

Oh, even weirder. I'm supposedly watching Atlanta on one of my squares, but it's actually Milwaukee.

And I need to get glasses.

Jere said...

Dark Knight--I give it a B-

Anonymous said...

I'm dubious about the Watchmen. Really good book, but it's directed by the 300 guy, and the trailer looked horeshit.

Jere said...

Maybe it's the Milwaukee Braves

Patrick said...

Not too late for a palindrome line score.

Tony said...

james, I have Wall-E and TDK tied for 1st. Maybe the slight edge to TDK for Ledger's performance.

Wall-E, in its own small way, is as experimental as anything Kubrick ever did. A children's movie where the first 20 minutes has NO dialogue? That takes some guts, even for Pixar.

Anonymous said...

Any book is filmable. Sergei Eisenstein wanted to film Das Kapital.

It just depends on if the filmmaker has good enough ideas.

Jere said...

Jacoby almost falls for the half-Nelson

Benjamin said...

Trailer looks like a scene by scene adaptation, though.

Benjamin said...

LBJ remembers he can steal.

Patrick said...

WTF!?! LBJ stolen base?!?

TWO?!?1

That's awesome!!

SoSock said...

Time for Peds to clear those clogged basepaths

Anonymous said...

Wall-E was a Chaplin movie through the first half. It was great. It's probably a better movie than anything Kubrick did, but I'm not big on Kubrick, other than Strangelove.

Patrick said...

FUCK YEAH!!!!

...FUCK NO....

s1c said...

Why did they send LBJ?

Tony said...

james, that Eisenstein tidbit made me smile.

I do agree that every book is filmable, but there are varying degrees of that. Just look at how many failed attempts to make A Confederacy of Dunces there have been.

Jere said...

grounder, third baseman bobbles, land right in his bare hand, throws--FY is safe. Run scores but Jacoby is trying to score too, but throw home gets him fairly easily. First run counts of course, inning over. 5-1

Tony said...

Also throw in A Clockwork Orange as a Kubrick film I like. Saw it on the big screen last October.

I'm trying to think of other great books that are really hard to film. Catch-22 might as well have not been filmed - although I've never seen the movie, only heard it's middling, so I could change my mind.

Patrick said...

Are you watching Buchholz?! These are the Royals. This is what should happen when you face them.

Skip 2001 and watch Solaris instead.

Jere said...

Tex had 3 on, 1 out, and the next two guys K'd. Against Robertson. At least they're still up 5-1. After 6.

KC TV trying to piss off Jere:

red sox always a good draw here in kc, but we never really saw the red gear until the last 4 years or so, i wonder why that is....

Another Rays HR.

Jere said...

that does indeed piss me off. They're lying. I guess they missed me (and all the other Sox fans) when I was there in 1993. (First thing I did when I got to Nebraska!)

s1c said...

a con (non-con) - They said on the Pre game that Francona was still trying to figure out how to put this line up together. I think he's hoping LBJ breaks out of this slump.

Infinite Jest would be hard to film. Gravity's Rainbow, as well.

Everything Is Illuminated was butchered. I've heard the Ulysses movie is awful, but I've never seen it and I'm not smart enough for the book.

A dictionary might be tough, although if you gave it the Peter Greenaway The Falls treatment, who knows...

Gravity's Rainbow is one of those books where I read the whole thing and wasn't sure if I liked it or not. Upon rumination, I decided I liked it, but will probably never read it again. As great as the prose it, that shit took effort.

Jere said...

holy absolute crap. That was crazier than the Damon play.

A little night musing said...

And guess what the Rays just got.

Jere said...

and Lowrie triples in 2 anyway!

allan said...

teahen a tad slow into the corner and a jedi triple

s1c said...

Tony - Bay hit one to deep center, the CF got a glove on it and the ball rolled on the top of the wall and was grabbed by Gload who threw the ball back into the infield.

Jedi!!!

Patrick said...

That's what should be happening. LBJ stealing bases, sox crushing Royals. All is well in the universe today.

A little night musing said...

Wow.

Benjamin said...

So they need an instant replay guy to swat balls that get stuck on top of the wall now?

Patrick said...

Jebus Christ, this Lowrie kid is pretty OK with me.

The pain of Lugo at bats is a not too distant memory.

s1c said...

Another multiple RBI game for the Jedi.

Mr. Julio Lugo, thy name is Pipp.

SoSock said...

Jed-I - still hot, hot, hot!

allan said...

White guy Gload played that The Right Way (TM) -- he did not try to high five any fans before getting the ball in.

s1c said...

SoSock - Hows the missus?

Tony said...

Thanks for the PBP. At least that didn't hurt too bad, with Lowrie coming through.

redsock, james actually mentioned Infinite Jest, not me. Never rad it, always meant to. David Foster Wallace's nonfiction is often fun and interesting. Consider the Lobster's one of my favorite books in my blogger profile.

Jere said...

I think the top of the wall is only that wide there because it's the scoreboard.

Jere said...

Yanks have tying run up, 1 out, 3 on in 7th. You really stink when Melky pinch hits for you.

Patrick said...

And who had the honor of being subbed by Milk dud?

s1c said...

Damon up with 2 outs - still 5-1 Tex.

Jere said...

and Melky pops out

Jere said...

Christian was thrown to the side-lions for Melky.

allan said...

"Sorry, Jim, I want this Dud to hit for you."

...

The Pipp headache story is also a complete myth, by the way.

SoSock said...

Hate I didn't et to see that one. I'll have to check out SC after Cat's aleep tonight, if that happens. Lst night I fell asleep about 2 but she was up most of the night.
Speaking of - S1c, she's doing better. They put a new portacath in this morning but the radiologist decided not to do the chest tube procedure the oncologist wanted. Nothing like battling doctors.
They're doing a PET-scan tomorrow to see if the fluid is tumor related. She'll probably go home tomorrow. But if the oncologist is right, we'll be back here in no time to have the tube put in.
Plugging away.

Tony said...

in the Yankees game, Giambi walked to load the bases. Then Joe Girardi, Super Genius, sent Pudge in to run for Giambi and had Melky Cabrera PH. Cabrera popped out.

Anybody else see something of a logical fallacy in that move?

Sock yes Pipp was a good Player, the headache is a bogus story, but Lugo has still been pipped.

The Shining is good, not great, IMNSHO. It's a pretty good thriller, but not as good as Hitchcock, or Les Diabolique, or Eyes Without a Face... or The Dark Knight

I don't know. Kubrick seems too... clinical, I guess, to handle a movie like that. Sometimes it seems like we're supposed to feel with Duval, and other times it seems like we're just supposed to watch with indifference. There's something kind of distasteful about it.

tim said...

Wow.

tim said...

Phil, just read that article on Vidro. Still prefer the dry sarcasm and hilarity of FJM though....But it's just so effing baffling that one of the shittiest hitters in the league is a designated hitter.
