Red Sox - 100 112 300 - 8 13 0Beckett (6.2-4-2-2-7, 90) retired 18 of 20 batters from the first inning through the seventh, Jason Bay went 4-for-5, Dustin Pedroia had two RBI-singles (26 straight road games!), Jacoby Ellsbury had two singles and two stolen bases (his first SBs since July 1), and Jed Lowrie smacked another triple.
Royals - 100 000 100 - 2 5 2
Bizarre play: You've probably already seen it. In the seventh, Bay hit a drive to deep left-center. CF Mitch Maier leapt at the wall and the ball hit off the tip of his glove. It then rolled along the top of the wall (towards left field) for 12-15 feet before LF Ross Gload jumped up, swiped the ball off the wall back towards the field, caught it and fired it into the infield. Bay ended up with a double.
Screen shots (the out-of-town scores change after the second picture):
And some advice to the parents of the kid who brought the anti-Manny sign to the park: When your sign refers to a player as stupid, you should make sure all of the words are spelled correctly.
The sign (shown on FSN at the start of the bottom of the ninth, sadly edited out of mlbtv's archived game) read: "Just Manny Bein'n Manny" -- with the second "Manny" crossed out and the word "Stupid" written off to the side.
"Bein'n"?
Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 8-4 and Texas held off New York 8-6. ... Red Sox still 3 GB, Yankees 6.5 GB.

Josh Beckett (4.15, 107 ERA+) / Brian Bannister (5.33, 82 ERA+)
I've has this link sitting around for awhile and I'm pretty sure I never posted it.
Seattle Times, April 20, 2008:
Ask [Bannister] how deeply he has delved into statistical analysis, and he says, "Oh, as deep as anybody. I've gone as deep as you could go, so far."SI's Jon Heyman has an article examining the apparent nuts and bolts of last week's trade. (Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also has a few nuggets.
If there's a Web site or book that presents some provocative new way of looking at baseball and its numbers, chances are strong Bannister has checked it out.
"What it has stirred up is really fun," he said. "Because here's a whole group of baseball fans that were kind of outcasts, or ignored, or everyone said they were crazy. The truth is coming out that they have some interesting things to say. If I can bridge that gap a little bit, I'm happy to do that."
Alex Eisenberg (who runs Baseball Intellect) has an article at The Hardball Times: "Why Jason Bay Makes The Red Sox A Better Team".

Jere, you're not suggesting I write about Mikey, are you?
Spiders threatening, though.
Yanks put up a run on a Damon triple and Jeter sac fly, so it's 4-1 now.
ALNM, no.
Let's go Cleve-land!
Evening all
Hey, sosock, how goes it?
Yanks only got the one in the 6th
Our team OPS drops about 40 points with RISP, which at first glance looked terrible, but it seems in line with other teams, except for the Angels who get about 70 points better!
YOu see that lob throw to first? It's almost like Beckett is TRYING to make the Red Sox--and America--lose!
Okay, I've tapped out my alloted well trips now. Thank you.
Beckett's doing work tonight on the hill. Get him more runs!
Thanks for keeping this one winnable people. I had to be out of the house for the evening so I wasted 3 hours watching the batman movie.
How's Beckett been doing?
one of the kc guys - cannot tell them apart -- says fielding percentage is the worst team stat.
he lays it out simply: just because you make no errors doesn't mean you are good defensively -- maybe you don't get to a lot of balls. and just because you make a lot of errors does not mean you are a bad defensive team.
nice to hear.
but they made a big deal about how long it has been since josh got a W, or how few he has lately, so they have a ways to go ....
5-1 Tex. (Anyone know how Murphy singled in a guy who was on first?)
So apparently these Red Sox are good at chasing people named Ramirez away ;>
Between innings reading: What Hath God Wrought, the latest in the Oxford History of the US and a very interesting read. The period between the War of 1812 and the Civil War is one I didn't get to read much about in school, and it's nice to fill in that gap in my historical learning. That Andrew Jackson sure did hate Native Americans, huh?
Wasted? Batman was pretty good, for a summer blockbuster, I thought.
Wow, "You're not Manny" chant. And he promptly gets a hit.
5-1 TEX.
beck - 69 thru 5.
jere, Marlon Byrd (or as I called him when he played for the Nationals, Marlon Tyrd) singled, stole 2nd, and scored on the base hit.
It was the fourth time I've seen it. : )
Well, the "you're not Manny" chant was clearly audible on NESN. Don't know if you caught it on the KC feed.
Gagne pitching for Atlanta? When did that happen?
oh, okay, ESPN missed the stolen base. That explains it. Thanks. Tek gets a hit...
I had to be out of the house for the evening so I wasted 3 hours watching the batman movie.
Mom & Dad having sex?
Just kidding :)
tek hit - wish i had the vcr going.
did he hustle?
TITO DOING HIT-AND-RUN WITH TEK AGAIN!!! AND BAY WASN"T CAUGHT STEALING!!!
Tek useful.
patrick - if you can, go see TDK on IMAX. A stunning experience.
And, for my money, TDK has raised the bar for superhero movies AND summer blockbusters. It's a work of art.
Jacoby useful.
My offensive breakout prediction getting closer and closer to coming true.... 4-1 SOX
Mom & Dad having sex?
AHHH! EARMUFFS!!!
The Watchmen will kick its ass, though.
Man, my commenting made me miss a Tek hit? Wow.
Thank you Bellsbury!
Yeah, most super hero movies are horrible, especially the new ones. TDK has some substance, and no CGI which is nice.
For the record, the best movie of the summer so far is Wall-E, and it's not close.
phil...on the fence re: Watchmen. The graphic novel is a masterpiece, but I've always thought it was unfilmable, and having the 300 guy do it doesn't exactly change my mind.
Oh, even weirder. I'm supposedly watching Atlanta on one of my squares, but it's actually Milwaukee.
And I need to get glasses.
Dark Knight--I give it a B-
I'm dubious about the Watchmen. Really good book, but it's directed by the 300 guy, and the trailer looked horeshit.
Maybe it's the Milwaukee Braves
Not too late for a palindrome line score.
james, I have Wall-E and TDK tied for 1st. Maybe the slight edge to TDK for Ledger's performance.
Wall-E, in its own small way, is as experimental as anything Kubrick ever did. A children's movie where the first 20 minutes has NO dialogue? That takes some guts, even for Pixar.
Any book is filmable. Sergei Eisenstein wanted to film Das Kapital.
It just depends on if the filmmaker has good enough ideas.
Jacoby almost falls for the half-Nelson
Trailer looks like a scene by scene adaptation, though.
LBJ remembers he can steal.
WTF!?! LBJ stolen base?!?
TWO?!?1
That's awesome!!
Time for Peds to clear those clogged basepaths
Wall-E was a Chaplin movie through the first half. It was great. It's probably a better movie than anything Kubrick did, but I'm not big on Kubrick, other than Strangelove.
FUCK YEAH!!!!
...FUCK NO....
Why did they send LBJ?
james, that Eisenstein tidbit made me smile.
I do agree that every book is filmable, but there are varying degrees of that. Just look at how many failed attempts to make A Confederacy of Dunces there have been.
grounder, third baseman bobbles, land right in his bare hand, throws--FY is safe. Run scores but Jacoby is trying to score too, but throw home gets him fairly easily. First run counts of course, inning over. 5-1
Someone's avatar is Nicholson from The Shining...Joe or Nix I think. I think they are a fan.
I liked 2001
go-go gadget Petey!
Did Ellsbury get clotheslined? Weird.
Oh well, 4-1.
Meanwhile Texas has the bases loaded and one out. Cleveland's still useless, though.
4-1? or 5-1?
My display says 4-1.
Tony - Or Man of La Mancha.
Thanks for the PBP Jere. GDGD is still trying to figure out how to report all of that.
5-1
and there goes the palindrome.
5-1 Sox, 5-1 Texas
It's close at Tropicana. Go Spider.
hey gdgd here you go
fy single to third, tek scores, lbj out 5-3-2.
you are welcome.
"Thanks for the PBP Jere. "
That--and a million other unrelated things--is what we're here for.
And we learn that Mosaic is not without bugs.
A MS product with bugs? Can't be.
...Oh, dear. HR by TB.
Stupid Gameday locked up on me. Oh well, two more runs, I'll take it.
Dr. Strangelove and The Shining are my Kubrick go-tos. I've never seen 2001 in full.
Mel OTT for Josh BECKETT
Beckett is pure fucking filth tonight.
Nix: Kubrick talk.
Three straight 2-pitch at-bats.
Love it!
Three straight 2-pitch at-bats.
Love it!
Also throw in A Clockwork Orange as a Kubrick film I like. Saw it on the big screen last October.
I'm trying to think of other great books that are really hard to film. Catch-22 might as well have not been filmed - although I've never seen the movie, only heard it's middling, so I could change my mind.
Are you watching Buchholz?! These are the Royals. This is what should happen when you face them.
Skip 2001 and watch Solaris instead.
Tex had 3 on, 1 out, and the next two guys K'd. Against Robertson. At least they're still up 5-1. After 6.
Goddamn, in the time it took me to write 2 comments Beckett finished the 6th. He's got the good shit going tonight.
Apparently I love it twice as much - ?
Summer blockbuster for 2009:
DICTIONARY!
Skip 2001 and watch Solaris instead
You have to be kidding right? Solaris, utter dreck.
james - the Russian one, or the Soderbergh one?
Actually, forget I asked...I could probably guess the answer.
KC TV trying to piss off Jere:
red sox always a good draw here in kc, but we never really saw the red gear until the last 4 years or so, i wonder why that is....
Just checking in. Things are looking good everywhere except Tampa. And Jailbait's having a good game. I wonder if he's gonna bat cleanup soon?
DIK-shuh-nahr-ee. (n.) Because any book can be filmed.
Another Rays HR.
grrrrrrrrrr
that does indeed piss me off. They're lying. I guess they missed me (and all the other Sox fans) when I was there in 1993. (First thing I did when I got to Nebraska!)
a con (non-con) - They said on the Pre game that Francona was still trying to figure out how to put this line up together. I think he's hoping LBJ breaks out of this slump.
KC starter is apparently called "Banny"
Infinite Jest would be hard to film. Gravity's Rainbow, as well.
Everything Is Illuminated was butchered. I've heard the Ulysses movie is awful, but I've never seen it and I'm not smart enough for the book.
A dictionary might be tough, although if you gave it the Peter Greenaway The Falls treatment, who knows...
Xavier Testicle-y grounded out.
Lowell reaches on an E-5.
Robbed of the dong!!!
WTF WTF??!?!?!?!!
WTFFFFFFFFFFFFF
That was the most bizzare thing I've seen on a baseball field in a long damn time.
Gravity's Rainbow is one of those books where I read the whole thing and wasn't sure if I liked it or not. Upon rumination, I decided I liked it, but will probably never read it again. As great as the prose it, that shit took effort.
holy absolute crap. That was crazier than the Damon play.
fucking wide wall
GDGD isn't sure what to make of it.
And Gameday's locked on me again...anybody want to help me out with some PBP, please?
ball rolled along top of wall for like 8 feet and a full second or two, left fielder swats it back in play
that play > noodle play
tony - are you mentioning IJ to kiss my ass? :>) i am obsessed with that book.
And guess what the Rays just got.
and Lowrie triples in 2 anyway!
teahen a tad slow into the corner and a jedi triple
Tony - Bay hit one to deep center, the CF got a glove on it and the ball rolled on the top of the wall and was grabbed by Gload who threw the ball back into the infield.
Jedi!!!
That's what should be happening. LBJ stealing bases, sox crushing Royals. All is well in the universe today.
Wow.
So they need an instant replay guy to swat balls that get stuck on top of the wall now?
Jebus Christ, this Lowrie kid is pretty OK with me.
The pain of Lugo at bats is a not too distant memory.
Another multiple RBI game for the Jedi.
Mr. Julio Lugo, thy name is Pipp.
Jed-I - still hot, hot, hot!
White guy Gload played that The Right Way (TM) -- he did not try to high five any fans before getting the ball in.
SoSock - Hows the missus?
Thanks for the PBP. At least that didn't hurt too bad, with Lowrie coming through.
redsock, james actually mentioned Infinite Jest, not me. Never rad it, always meant to. David Foster Wallace's nonfiction is often fun and interesting. Consider the Lobster's one of my favorite books in my blogger profile.
I think the top of the wall is only that wide there because it's the scoreboard.
I'm not kissing anyone's ass. It's one of my favorite books ever.
Word is Jim from the Office wants to make it into a movie... it would have to be a Das Boot type long-ass miniseries.
Just got home from the chicken dinner. That ball on the wall was fucking wild!
That's Lowrie's 4th in 5 days?
he did not try to high five any fans before getting the ball in.
and he thus won't be heading to the HoF.
Tek being Tek.
Poor Tek. Just a monster inning and he contributes an out.
John Krasinski really wants to take on Infinite Jest? My goodness. Guy's a lot cooler than I thought.
Pipp was quite a good player. Lugo, however ........
I like this fibonacci sequence we have going here. Five more in the 8th would be pretty OK.
Stretch time at the stadium formerly known as Royals.
nunez allowed 7 hits and 5 runs in 1.1 IP
:>)
Who is this Lugo you speak of?
Yanks have tying run up, 1 out, 3 on in 7th. You really stink when Melky pinch hits for you.
And who had the honor of being subbed by Milk dud?
Damon up with 2 outs - still 5-1 Tex.
and Melky pops out
Christian was thrown to the side-lions for Melky.
"Sorry, Jim, I want this Dud to hit for you."
...
The Pipp headache story is also a complete myth, by the way.
Hate I didn't et to see that one. I'll have to check out SC after Cat's aleep tonight, if that happens. Lst night I fell asleep about 2 but she was up most of the night.
Speaking of - S1c, she's doing better. They put a new portacath in this morning but the radiologist decided not to do the chest tube procedure the oncologist wanted. Nothing like battling doctors.
They're doing a PET-scan tomorrow to see if the fluid is tumor related. She'll probably go home tomorrow. But if the oncologist is right, we'll be back here in no time to have the tube put in.
Plugging away.
in the Yankees game, Giambi walked to load the bases. Then Joe Girardi, Super Genius, sent Pudge in to run for Giambi and had Melky Cabrera PH. Cabrera popped out.
Anybody else see something of a logical fallacy in that move?
Sock yes Pipp was a good Player, the headache is a bogus story, but Lugo has still been pipped.
Damon walks on 5 pitches.
Judas BBRBI. Still 2 out.
Kim in the other room stopped making her soapmaking noise* and said "over"--imitating "Mrs. Torrance" in The Shining when she was on the cb radio. And Shining was mentioned before. So....
*banging the mold thing to get the finished soap out
Heh. Just watched Tarantino tear a strip off some loud mouthed bitch. It was fun.
Texas walks in a run. 5-2
Sock - some good news there, keep the faith.
Texas game Nolan shaking his head after Rupe walked in the run.
Hey Nolan, you do remember your career stats right?
Is Mike Aviles the real deal? Is he a prospect making good, or just playing out of his mind.
The clairvoyant old guy in The Shining had such a crappy ending.
Jeter ends inning. 5-2 after 6.5
CI squander. 5-2.
The Shining - never saw it.
Beckett still looking good. Sox needed this type of performance from him.
CI squander.
Heh heh heh heh.
CI squander.
hah hah hah hah hah
good old nolan.
had more than a few 12 K, 10 BB games.
old yeller time?
Showing the Damon play again.
Showing the noodle wallball, heh.
Interesting move, terr bear
old yeller time?
No! Only a 7 run lead...we don't need to be using Pap tonight!
Yikes, 4 pitch walk. Probably Beckett's last inning, no matter what, right?
Why's Beckett gone?
Is Mike Aviles the real deal? Is he a prospect making good, or just playing out of his mind.
You're not the only one with those questions.
And there's Timlin. Well, fair enough. Probably would've let Josh face one more guy, but not a big deal.
yeller's been gold in his last 6-7 outings.
There goes another palindrome.
Manny woulda caught it.
Hurting Josh's ERA
The Shining is good, not great, IMNSHO. It's a pretty good thriller, but not as good as Hitchcock, or Les Diabolique, or Eyes Without a Face... or The Dark Knight
I don't know. Kubrick seems too... clinical, I guess, to handle a movie like that. Sometimes it seems like we're supposed to feel with Duval, and other times it seems like we're just supposed to watch with indifference. There's something kind of distasteful about it.
Wow.
Phil, just read that article on Vidro. Still prefer the dry sarcasm and hilarity of FJM though....But it's just so effing baffling that one of the shittiest hitters in the league is a designated hitter.
A great thriller:
The Vanishing
The original, Dutch version, not the remake.
Brrrrrr.
Fucking pitcher points to the sky after K'ing ortiz. oooooookay then.
KC says Manny and Ortiz became US citizens this year. Jeez, guys.
That SO was god assisted.
Never seen The Vanashing. Always wanted to.
By the way, lost in the shuffle tonight...should Tizzle be moved in the order? He's just not hitting that well, from what I can gather, and doesn't look like he's walking enough to justify being batted 3rd. I know Tito wouldn't move him, but do you all think he should be?
OK nurse is gone, back to the game.
She obviously needs to straighten out her priorities :>
And I know this will come as a shock, but Tito brought in Timlin and the opposition promptly scored.
imagine that
WTF KC announcers?
8-2 TEX.
Can't move Ortiz. He's too good. I don't care what he is and isn't doing (until it becomes pressing). It would hurt everyone's confidence to move him. He's a fixture.
looks bad for the team captain to leave the game after 7.5 innings. bad example for the young kids.
mmmm, 1st name - hispanic ; last name - German.....?
Cleveland about to fold like a deck chair.
I agree with Patrick - you can't hit someone like Ortiz 6th or 7th or something. Not happening. He'll catch fire.
i agree with patrick.
tiz started the year 1 for 100 (not really that bad) and did not move.
The ol' cock still has something in him!
Chris Davis doubled in a pair for the Rangers. He's been incredible since he came up. Adam Dunn esque
yeller turns the rifle around!
..
and there i am on TV again.
PHIL! I saw that!!!!
Phil - water?
prematurity usually a problem? ;>
Yeah, you guys are probably right. I feel bad even questioning The Greatest Hero in American History. Just thinking out loud.
I like this:
Sox 8-2
MFY 2-8
move Ortiz....thought never entered my mind.....Move Papi , never......and wall-e in my opinion wasn't that good . I get I recycle
Well a couple more outings like that for yeller and Tito will start using him to bridge to the bot again.
And the Rays win, 8-4
I'm dehydrating here and you guys find it funny.
Manny gets another hit.
Remy stating that the water is dirty. Respect the game dawg, it ain't over until its over.
What's with phil?
Chris Davis could be a dark horse in the ROY race:
AB HR OPS
Longoria 370 21 .878
Davis: 126 11 .958
4 hit night for jb
Ladies and gentlemen, your 4/5 Jason Bay.
KC guys finally get to the MUMS.
MUTE!
