G114: Red Sox 8, Royals 2

Red Sox - 100 112 300 - 8 13 0
Royals - 100 000 100 - 2 5 2
Beckett (6.2-4-2-2-7, 90) retired 18 of 20 batters from the first inning through the seventh, Jason Bay went 4-for-5, Dustin Pedroia had two RBI-singles (26 straight road games!), Jacoby Ellsbury had two singles and two stolen bases (his first SBs since July 1), and Jed Lowrie smacked another triple.

Bizarre play: You've probably already seen it. In the seventh, Bay hit a drive to deep left-center. CF Mitch Maier leapt at the wall and the ball hit off the tip of his glove. It then rolled along the top of the wall (towards left field) for 12-15 feet before LF Ross Gload jumped up, swiped the ball off the wall back towards the field, caught it and fired it into the infield. Bay ended up with a double.

Screen shots (the out-of-town scores change after the second picture):

And some advice to the parents of the kid who brought the anti-Manny sign to the park: When your sign refers to a player as stupid, you should make sure all of the words are spelled correctly.

The sign (shown on FSN at the start of the bottom of the ninth, sadly edited out of mlbtv's archived game) read: "Just Manny Bein'n Manny" -- with the second "Manny" crossed out and the word "Stupid" written off to the side.

"Bein'n"?

Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 8-4 and Texas held off New York 8-6. ... Red Sox still 3 GB, Yankees 6.5 GB.

***

Josh Beckett (4.15, 107 ERA+) / Brian Bannister (5.33, 82 ERA+)

I've has this link sitting around for awhile and I'm pretty sure I never posted it.

Seattle Times, April 20, 2008:
Ask [Bannister] how deeply he has delved into statistical analysis, and he says, "Oh, as deep as anybody. I've gone as deep as you could go, so far."

If there's a Web site or book that presents some provocative new way of looking at baseball and its numbers, chances are strong Bannister has checked it out.

"What it has stirred up is really fun," he said. "Because here's a whole group of baseball fans that were kind of outcasts, or ignored, or everyone said they were crazy. The truth is coming out that they have some interesting things to say. If I can bridge that gap a little bit, I'm happy to do that."
SI's Jon Heyman has an article examining the apparent nuts and bolts of last week's trade. (Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also has a few nuggets.

Alex Eisenberg (who runs Baseball Intellect) has an article at The Hardball Times: "Why Jason Bay Makes The Red Sox A Better Team".

Scoreboard Watching: Spiders/Rays at 7 PM and Yankees/Rangers at 8 PM

L is upstairs with the sound on apparently. Her cursing is peeling the paint off the walls!!!

Stop bogarting the modulo 200 + 1, Allan.

Benjamin said...

So GDGD still doesn't have the wallball video.

Exeter hospital commercial so weird.

It's a fucking hospital. Why do you need an AD?

allan said...

KC kid has a sign that says

Just
Manny
Bein'n
Manny

but the last Manny is crossed out and "Stupid" is written on the side

...

Bein'n

Sharp as a tack, that fucker.

I also delivered pizza to Exeter hospital a lot. Nurses and receptionists are a sassy bunch. Was my least favorite place to go.

Smith v Smith - Jere would be proud :)

8-6 TEX on a Sexon grandslam. MFYs refuse to die.

Patrick said...

Chris Smith is back? Has he been here for awhile now?

Tony said...

redsock, if he's a Royals fan, then leave him be. He's suffered enough.

KC kid

Was it a kid? Looked like a young woman to me, but admittedly I couldn't see very well.

allan said...

jere's uncle gettin' it done!

(and didn't want to look too closely)

Suck it, KC. Water.

Water at 11:11

Benjamin said...

MFYs better lose, because this is feeling like a couple days ago.

A little night musing said...

Yay win!

Say good night Dick

Good night dick!!!

allan said...

i looked at the person only briefly. was more focused on the sign, then it was gone. assumed it was a kid.

when mlbtv archives the game, i'll check.

Oh, gotta go turn on the radio...

FSN Texas for the NY game. Maybe the first time ever I prefer FSN!!!

Nice.

Watched in The Bar. ANOTHER wall ball causes great amusement.

MFY -- must die.

I don't crow over injuries but Joba getting a second opinion is a positive sign. I understand his downside as a minor leaguer was injury risk.

SoSock said...

Time of death - 11:11.
manana

So McCain volunteers his wife for a topless/bottomless misogynistic fuckfest before 4pm and The Daily Show can't work it into a punchline. They're slacking.

Jacoby getting interviewed by Joe and Dave. He's trying very hard to say the team first rhetoric, but I think he is brimming with excitement at his good performance.

He sounds very together, all things said.

no soup for the yankee noodle dandy.

Firefox crapped out on me right when the final out was recorded. Ah, well. Nice win tonight, both for the offense and for Josh.

Played Dirty Water on iTunes, and transitioned to one of my favorite Bob Dylan live tracks ever - the Rolling Thunder Revue version of A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. Good times!

Benjamin said...

That nickname ought to exist, but Google's never heard of it.

Patrick said...

I understand his downside as a minor leaguer was injury risk.

yeah, that's why many teams skipped him and the Yankees picked him up. Perhaps they should have as well. Will be interesting to watch.

Benjamin said...

Fuck it, gloat. Joba's a tool and deserves to have his head taken off by a hurled ashtray in a non-NYC bar.

Tony said...

It is pretty amazing that both of the heralded Young Studs for the Yankees have suffered injuries this year. Talk about snakebitten. Girardi must've brought a shrunken head with him to New York or something.

What a shame, huh?

allan said...

veras hits hamilton (or his uni) and benches warned. slappy hit 2x earlier.

Patrick said...

It's got to suck to grow up thinking you are going to do something you love and then have it taken away by injury.

If Joba is alright but they have to move him to the bullpen for his career, I think that would be a good outcome.

allan said...

everyday eddie in as it's last chance for the chokers

Benjamin said...

Short reliever + converted to starter = popcorn.

Tony said...

Nice to see Guardado still has a job.

allan said...

Manny has half of LA's hits thru 8 -- 2.

Benjamin said...

I miss Manny, but I'm loving Bay. Couldn't we have both?

Benjamin said...

I's quandries like that that lead grown men to engage in fantasy baseball.

Benjamin said...

Quandaries.

Tony said...

I came to a conclusion to last year - I am really, really godawful at fantasy sports. Thank the Lord I've never paid to be in a league.

A little night musing said...

Couldn't we have both?

"I've got two lovers and I love them both the same"

Well, not the same, maybe.

There are worse quandaries to be in though.

SoSock said...

mmm Jeter throws ouy Hamilton at second.
If he respected the game he would throw the ball all the way to 1st instead of taking the easy way out.
Lazy bum - axe him!

Patrick said...

I would never put money on that. Although it hurts me deep down to lose any money in a bet. I blame my jewish heritage.

Tony said...

I have no problem losing a little money now and then (I'm a poker player, and not the world's best one), but I won't lose money doing something I know I'm terrible at. That just isn't logical.

Patrick said...

LMAO. I love that Texas is putting the game into the hands of a mustachioed Guardado.

Benjamin said...

If I wanted to lose money, I'd pay Alex Rodriguez $275 million to never win me a championship.

Tony said...

Two GIDP, including 1 as the tying run in the 9th; not the best night for Slappy.

Sox win, Yanks lose...2 out of 3 ain't bad.

SoSock said...

So CI and A-Rod are the 2 last outs and the Skankees lose.
goodtimes

allan said...

SLAPPY 5-4-3 GIDP to end it.

Texas 8-6!

NYY 6.5 GB!

Benjamin said...

Suck it, A-Rod. MFYs lose.

SoSock said...

OK, this time for real - manana

Tony said...

I'm off as well. The Beckett I saw tonight damn well better be the Beckett I see for the rest of the year.

Take it easy, everyone. Damn, it's late on the East Coast.

nick said...

Ok, I'm here! ok. a bit late. 1000+ the other night? wow.

I'm trying to cut back on some blog reading and be more productive, but here I am debating if I should go back and read the comment threads here....

I think I'm still on west coast time.

What happens when you cook spinach with dirty water?

FUCK YOU, Globe

What a bunch of fucking shit that is. I click on the slideshow "Manny Moments" hoping to see pictures and captions reminiscent of that SoSH thread. But what do I get? A bunch of fucking negative garbage, about every time Manny didn't "hustle down the line", off-field incidents and pictures/stories of every other MBM incident which the media blew outta proportion during his stay in Boston. What a fucking nice send-off, Globe, you bunch of douche bagged cocksuckers.

I only went through a bunch of the slides, not all of them - some at the beginning and some at the end, but what a load of horseshit. No mummy, but they managed to put in all this shit about his contract dispute the last couple weeks of july. FUCK YOU globe. FUCK this shit pisses me off.

What a great game to watch. My wife and I were able to go to this game. There were tons of Sox fans there. I didn't see any anti-Manny stuff from Red Sox fans.

Ortiz misses him in the line-up that is for sure.
